✨✧ AmbianceEbun (with bonus download) ... LP
Da Mon/High Jazz (Switzerland), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A soulful gem from reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – head of the Ambiance Fusion Ensemble, who cut a few really great albums back in the day! This set is definitely one of them – and it's got a unique approach that's rooted in spiritual jazz, but delivered with some fusion touches too – guitar, keyboards, and electric bass giving some of the tunes a bit of a groove – a bit like that shift that Oneness Of Juju made in the late 70s too! There's a really great female singer on a few tracks – who has this vibe that's a bit like Jean Carn singing on an early Doug Carn record, or maybe like female vocals on some of the Roy Ayers albums for Polydor – and the whole album is as soulful as it is groovy, with some nice cosmic touches throughout. Titles include a killer version of Walter Bishop's "Turnaround", plus the original numbers "Ebun", "Camouflage", "After June", "OFC", and "Bossa Monife". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Doug CarnBest Of Doug Carn ... CD
Universal Sound (UK), 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Doug Carn was one of the lost monster artists of the seventies, and a big chunk of his great organ jazz work is collected here on this great "best of" package. He's joined by his wife Jean Carn number of cuts (that's right, the same Jean Carn who recorded for Philly), including the beautiful version of "Little B's Poem", and the spiritual classic "Higher Ground". Very righteous, very heavy, and with a motherlode of great tracks! CD
(Out of print, please note that the slipcover is included.)

✨✧ Doug CarnInfant Eyes ... LP
Black Jazz, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An undisputed 70s soul jazz classic – and arguably the best album that Doug Carn ever cut for the Black Jazz label! The set is a masterpiece of spiritual jazz – with Carn on keyboards setting up the groove, and wife Jean singing some incredible vocals – very different than her later soul work as a solo act, and with a vibe that's like Dee Dee Bridgewater at her soulful 70s best. Jean does a killer job with the album's classic vocal version of Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" – done here with sweet lyrics that really open the song up a lot, and make it into an anthem of love and joy that we'd be hard pressed to match with any other tune! And all other tracks are great too – with titles that include "Moon Child", "Passion Dance", and a great version of Wayne Shorter's "Infant Eyes". LP, Vinyl record album

Doug CarnSpirit Of The New Land ... CD
Black Jazz, 1972. New Copy ... On August 28, 2020
Plenty of spirit, and plenty of soul – a 70s classic from organist Doug Carn, and a record that took his instrument, and jazz in general, to a whole new level for the decade! Carn's got this burning, righteous quality on his keys – a vibe that certainly owes something to Larry Young, but also takes off even further – working in a spiritual ensemble that also features his wife Jean Carn on vocals – sounding way more like a righteous jazz singer than on her later soul sides for Philly International! Other players are great, too – and include Charles Tolliver on flugelhorn, Garnett Brown on trombone, George Harper on tenor and soprano sax, Buster Williams on bass, and Alphonse Mouzon on drums. Tracks include "New Moon", "Trance Dance", "My Spirit", "Blue In Green", and "Arise & Shine". CD

Creative Arts EnsembleOne Step Out ... CD
Nimbus, 1981. New Copy ... $9.99
A great bit of work from the hip LA scene that centered around the Nimbus label at the end of the 70s – a collective who work together here with the same spiritual jazz modes you'd find on labels like Tribe or Strata East! The group features some bigger names from the scene, including some solo Nimbus acts – plus some other overlooked players – a lineup that includes Henry Franklin on bass, George Bohannon on trombone, Wilbert Hemsley on tenor, Dadesi Komolafe on flute, Jeff Clayton on baritone, and Gary Bias on alto and soprano sax. The album's also got some beautiful vocals from BJ Crowley – who co-leads the group, and sings out with a proud righteousness that recalls some of Dee Dee Bridgewater or Jean Carn's early early soul jazz recordings. The tracks are all long and spiraling numbers – never really "out", but in a free searching mode that's a perfect platform for the piano work of the other co-leader, Kaeef Ruzadun. Titles include "One Step Out", "Flashback Of Time", "All Praises Due", and "Stars In Lightyear Time". CD

Azar LawrenceBridge Into The New Age (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Prestige, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
A wicked set from reedman Azar Lawrence – one of the few albums issued under his own name, and a great example of the waves he was making on the 70s west coast scene! There's a depth here that goes beyond most of the other Fantasy Records sessions of the time – a sound that would be right at home on Strata East, or in some of the more righteous Cobblestone sessions – no surprise, given that the ensemble here is filled with key spiritual jazz players, including Woody Shaw on trumpet, Hadley Caliman on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Billy Hart on drums, Mtume on congas, and even Jean Carn on a bit of guest vocals! Most tracks are longish, and a perfect setting for Azar's exploratory reed work on soprano sax and tenor – and titles include "Warriors Of Peace", "Forces Of Nature", and "The Beautiful & Omnipresent Love". ✨✧ VariousCosmic Lounge – Presented By King Britt – A Spiritual Quest For Higher Sound ... CD
Rapster/BBE (UK), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most righteous albums to ever bear the name of King Britt – a selection of spiritual jazz tracks from the 70s, all of which show a definite inspiration for Britt's recent work in the 21st Century! There's no remixes or remakes here – and the collection features all original gems from a few decades back – stretched out and cosmic grooves from some of the leading lights of the soul jazz underground in the post-Coltrane years! Most numbers are obscure tracks licensed from smaller indie labels – brought together beautifully with a sense of depth and darkness that goes way beyond the usual King Britt groove. Titles include "Space Spy" by Grachan Moncur III, "Beyond Yourself" by Brother Ahh, "Scorpio Libra" by Eddie Henderson, "Kawaida" by Herbie Hancock, "Ekim" by Michal Urbaniak, "Yebo" by Mtume, "Conviction" by Dane Belany, "Naima" by Doug & Jean Carn, "The Time Now For Change" by Phil Ranelin, "Moving Pictures 4 The Ear" by Don Cherry, and "Encounter" by Flora Purim.
