✨✧ Alan BraufmanValley Of Search (with bonus tracks) ... CD
India Navigation/Valley Of Search, 1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the only albums ever issued by New York reedman Alan Braufman – a player who works here in a setting that really captures the best energy of the loft jazz scene in the 70s – at a time when Braufman was part of a musicians collective on Canal Street that also included David S Ware! Ware isn't on this set, but that's OK with us, because the rest of the group is so great – Braufman on alto, flute, and pipe horn – with Cooper Moore on piano and dulcimer, the latter of which is used in very cool ways – plus Cecil McBee on bass, David Lee on drums, and Ralph Williams on percussion. Cooper Moore delivers a striking spoken passage on "Chant" – and other titles include "Miracles", "Ark Of Salvation", "Rainbow Warriors", and "Love Is For Real". Also features a never-issued live performance – a beautiful 18 minute improvisation between Alan Braufman on alto and Cooper Moore on piano – recorded as it slide out over the airwaves of WKCR in New York, in 1972 – and a much-needed addition to the small amount of recordings that Braufman made in the 70s! The piano is great – rolling with a sense of freedom sometimes, but returning to majestic melody at others – and Braufman blows with this searching quality that really matches its energy, and sounds deeply soulful throughout. CD
(Include bonus 18-minute session Live At WKCR, May 22, 1972.)

Alan BraufmanFire Still Burns ... CD
Valley Of Search, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A long-overdue second album from Alan Braufman – maybe not the most familiar name in jazz, but a reed player who gave the world one fantastic album on India Navigation back in the 70s – and who now finally returns as a leader for this equally great second set! Braufman plays alto and flute – and the whole thing has this bold, soaring sort of energy – maybe even more spiritually forceful than Alan's classic album, thanks in part to an excellent group who bristle with dynamic vibes throughout – always on the edge of going farther out, but also nicely together too. Other players include Cooper Moore on piano, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Ken Filiano on bass, and Andrew Drury on drums – with a bit of percussion at times from Michael Wimberly. Titles include "Creation", "Alone Again", "The Fire Still Burns", "Home", and "No Floor No Ceiling". CD

Cecil McBeeMusic From The Source ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 About November 17, 2021
One of the few albums issued as a leader by bassist Cecil McBee – and like all of the rest, a really amazing record that showcases the visionary talent that often made McBee such a key part of other folks' groups! The tracks are long and spiritual, but with slight avant leanings – and Cecil both plucks and bows his instrument, creating a masterful leadership to a group that includes Chico Freeman on flute and tenor, Joe Gardner on trumpet, Dennis Moorman on piano, Don Moye on drums, and Steve McCall on percussion – definitely a strong AACM influence in the lineup but with some of the soulful warmth that you'd expect more from a set on India Navigation. The performance was recorded at Sweet Basil – and includes 2 long tracks – "Agnez" and "First Song In The Day" – plus the shorter "God Spirit". CD
