The material was recorded in 1980, not too long before we lost McCall – and the interplay is wonderful, and really represents a shift in the energy of the AACM scene – maybe some influence from the loft jazz world of mid 70s New York, which in turn drew inspiration from late 60s Chicago – but also delivered with a sense of soul that marks Anderson as part of a key lineage of Chicago tenorists that includes Clifford Jordan, Johnny Griffin, and John Gilmore! McCall is great too – a sensitive soul, but a strong force throughout – as the duo improvise on two long tracks, "Within" and "Wandering". CD

By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! A nice collection of overlooked work from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – not the oft-reissued material from the group's years at Blue Note, but instead some slightly more obscure sides recorded for Columbia and RCA! The work here also represents a time when Blakey was experimenting a bit more with the group – a stretch right before he settled into some of the more-recorded groups with Wayne Shorter, Lee Morgan, and Bobby Timmons – but still had a great ear for important younger talent! "Filet Americain" and "ICP No 17" are from earlier in 1971 – and showcase a different, more sonic side of the trio – some tones that are at the farther end of hearing, which ruminate then blossom into bolder statements, but still often with a very abstracted approach to each instrument. The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. In a way, the record's one of those sessions that Riverside would sometimes do – pairing a key new voice as a leader with others in an all-star group – but in another way, it's also a return to the sound that first brought Evans' to a wider audience in the 1957 and 1958 years – when he was working in non-trio groups with more famous players – adding his unique piano stylings to their (then) better-known solo modes. The pairing of Evans and Hall has been beautifully documented on other records – and sounds equally great here – but the real treat is Freddie Hubbard's horn, which often lays back on most of the tracks, then bursts in with a brashness that really ignites some of the tunes! He's playing a bit muted here, trying to go for that Miles/Evans combination from the late 50s – but that's plenty ok with us, as we love those records a lot. Where some might have used a piano, Muriel's putting the guitar in just the right spot – able to handle rhythm and melody effortlessly, all with this wide palette of colors and tone that really illuminates the record. As always, Lars pulls far more out of the instrument than any of his contemporaries could hope to – and the backing he gets from Swedish modernists like Arne Domnerus, Rune Ofwerman, Bert Dahlander, and Sven Ake Persson really help keep things moving along at a strong pace. It's hard to put the genius of Woody Herman in words – but that's something we don't have to do, thankfully, as this massive box set provides a wonderful illustration of everything that made Woody such a standout in his generation! Sure, Herman was a bandleader with a clarinet – but that's where any similarity to other large groups stops – as Woody was always open to new ideas, including influences from bebop, modern jazz, R&B, jump blues, and other styles – and was always changing up the way he approached his music and arrangements, not just changing the lineup of his famous bands, but also breaking out into new recording possibilities too! This package captures Herman at three important parts of his career – early Decca Records 78rpm singles, which show all those modern edges that Herman created on the large ensemble jazz scene, thanks to key modern players; his huge amount of music for MGM, where Herman also really opened up as an overall entertainer, and was able to take on just about any jazz style with effortless ease, and become quite a singer as well; and his rare 50s material for his own self-run Mars label, an imprint for 78rpm singles that linked Woody much more with the growing R&B indies of the time. And as much as we love Mosaic for LP-related box sets, we often feel they do an even more crucial job with sides from this 78rpm era – proving great sound, missing notes, and a sense of completeness that you don't even get if you're a collector of the original format. 7CD box has the usual great Mosaic presentation and copious notes – and a total of 141 tracks in all. Quite possibly our favorite album ever from pianist Andrew Hill – a really unique outing that features the vibes of Bobby Hutcherson and a rare non-Sun Ra appearance by tenorist John Gilmore! The presence of Hutcherson brings a real "new thing" energy to the album – a feel that's similar to Bobby's classic Dialogue album, of which Hill was such an important part. But the searching tenor of Gilmore also brings a striking new level to the session as well – and his solos open up with a raw, earthy quality that really shades in the album with a great deal of feeling. Gilmore's role here is a bit like that of Joe Henderson on his freer Blue Note material – but his sound still undeniably unique, at a level that really makes us wish he'd recorded more albums like this at the time. These guys may have the structure of a jazz piano trio, but their sound is something quite different – very funky right from the start, as you'd expect from the S&P legacy – but also much more stripped-down than that previous group, with a similar mix of funk and jazz as Japanese groups like Indigo Jam Unit and early work by Quasimode! There's definitely plenty of jazz in the mix, but the core rhythm is equally important – and these guys have a lot more soul and depth than some of the "pretty boy" trios on the Japanese market of light, whose music is maybe a bit more flighty. The groove here is sublimely fluid and soulful – clearly the next wave of expression on the piano in the 50s, and as important to the Chicago scene as Bill Evans was to that of New York at the time. A wonderful package – one that brings together five excellent albums from pianist Alan Jean-Marie – an important player on the French scene, but one who never full gets his due on this side of the Atlantic! The set begins with Jean-Marie's first album of Biguine Reflections – a set of jazz reinterpretations of the style of biguine – that highly rhythmic mode from the French West Indies, which itself received a strong influx of jazz in the post-war years! Alain Jean-Marie has roots in Guadeloupe, but plays with the open flow of some of our favorite French pianists, too – and the album's treasure that we've loved for years – one with rhythmic impulses that are unlike any other jazz trio record we can think of! Alain first played in other biguine groups in his youth, so is very familiar with the style – but really opens it up here with the help of Eric Vinceno on bass and Serge Marne on drums. The set continues with Volumes 2, 3, 4, and 5 of Biguine Reflections – a combination of modern jazz and Caribbean moods, but in ways that are completely sublime – and without any of the cliches you might expect! The core sound is acoustic piano jazz – with Jean-Marie on piano, Eric Viinceno on bass, and Jean-Claude Montredon on drums – and together, the players come across with this really fluid vibe, often taking on the sorts of rhythms you might not always find on a standard trio session, and leaping along with a great sense of joy in their music. All albums are wonderful – and the 4CD set is a hell of a discovery in jazz if you've not heard the music of Alain before. CD

An important set that documents a nice patch of King's early vocalese jazz sides – pivotal vocal jazz recordings that were not only enormously popular with listeners around the country, but which also did a heck of a lot in the way of advancing the way that male singers handled lead vocals on jazz-based tunes! The first album's pulled from his Original Moody's Mood For Love set for Prestige, which was itself a compilation and features "I'm In The Mood For Love", "Red Top", "Jumpin With Symphony Sid", "I'm Gone", "Funk Junction", "You're Crying", "Don't Get Scared", "This Is Always', and "Exclamation Blues". The second LP's the hard to find Goldne Days set, a beautiful record, and still one of the greatest jazz vocal albums ever made. The great King Pleasure sings in a raspy vocalese style similar to Jon Hendricks or Eddie Jefferson, but with a sense of warmth and delivery that the two of them never seem to reach. The set list here features a stellar batch of tracks with lyrics by Pleasure, including "The New Symphony Sid", "No, Not Much", "Parker's Mood", and "Golden Days". There's some great accompaniment by LA hard bop players like Teddy Edwards, Gerald Wiggins, and Harold Land, and the whole set sparkles with imagination and warmth. 21 tracks in all. But the one non-tenor part of the album is an important one – as it features Moe's original reading of "The Swingin Shepherd Blues" – done on flute, and in a sweetly stepping groove that made the track an important hit single, and a key step in the acceptance of the flute in mainstream jazz. Konitz first rose up as a modernist in the postwar years, recorded important records for Atlantic, Verve, Prestige, and other labels – then mostly gave his gifts to the overseas market during the 70s, and especially the 80s. Yet during that time, he grew tremendously as a player – something that's almost hard to imagine given the genius of his youth – and received this excellent showcase courtesy of bassist Charlie Haden, who co-produced with Lee, and plays in the trio alongside pianist Brad Mehldau. The format is open and fluid – never too free, but with that exploratory vibe that Konitz and the rest of the Tristano school opened up in the 50s. Some of the greatest work ever recorded by reedman Oliver Lake – all packaged together in one great set! The package shows Lake really maturing both as a player and as a group leader – working with a range of contemporaries to move his sound past the loft jazz modes of the 70s, but still with all the deep spirit of collaboration that always made his contributions to jazz so important. The first few albums are key standouts in the Black Saint catalog, and the later titles are great surprises from some years when folks might have taken Lake for granted, but he was still always able to pull out some new modes of expression. Players on the sessions include Michael Gregory Jackson, Fred Hopkins, Baikida Carroll, Donald Smith, Pheeroan Ak Laff, Russell Gunn, Charles Eubanks, Reggie Workman, and Andrew Cyrille – and the set features 7 full albums, all with original artwork – Holding Together, Orphet, Clevont Fitzhubert, Expandable Language, Edge-ing, Dedicated To Dolphy, and A New Organization. An incredible legacy of jazz – one that's certainly as disconnected as promised by the title, but which stands as a much-needed look at the many-sided talents of tenorist Allen Lowe! The set's on ESP Records, but often has sounds that are somewhat straight ahead – although often in a way that's a bit more than you might expect – as Lowe's a player with a strong knowledge of older generations of jazz, but who can put things together with a very contemporary ear – maybe best summed up in the Avant Garde Tribute To Louis Armstrong – a Knitting Factory performance that's part of this set. Lowe works with a compelling range of musicians throughout – maybe most importantly, trumpeter Doc Cheatham, who shows that in the 80s and 90s, he was still very open to new ideas – as well as Percy France and David Murray on tenor, Randy Sandke on trumpet, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Matthew Shipp on piano and Farfisa organ – and many others along the way.
