✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsThings To Come From Those Now Gone ... CD
Delmark, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous step forward for the young Muhal Richard Abrams – a set that still shows his early roots in the AACM, but which also blossoms with some of his more serious compositional efforts to come! There's a sensitivity here that really stands out – even among Abrams' contemporaries – a striving for a wider range of expression – some as bold as before, some much more deeply personal and intimate. The tracks feature a shifting array of players – working alongside Abrams piano, and building up the sound in a number of different ways. Players include Wallace McMillan on flute and sax, Edwin Daugherty on sax, Richard Brown on sax, Emanuel Cranshaw on vibes, Rufus Reid on bass, and Steve McCall and Wilbur Campbell on drums. Ella Jackson provides vocals on "How Are You?" – and other titles include "Ballad For New Souls", "Things To Come From Those Now Gone", "In Retrospect", "Ballad For Old Souls", "1 & 4 Plus 2 & 7", and "March Of The Transients". Albert AylerAlbert Ayler In Greenwich Village ... LP
Impulse/Superior Viaduct, 1966. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
One of the first big moments of Albert Ayler's work in the jazz mainstream – and a record that doesn't dim his greatness at all from the earlier sides recorded for ESP! The album's got a sharply angular sound that more than lives up to its vibrant cover image – a well-honed approach to improvisation, showcased by Ayler in a set of recordings done upon his return from work on the European scene. The material was recorded on two different dates – featuring two different groups: one with Alan Silva, Beaver Harris, and Joel Friedman; the other with Donald Ayler, Henry Grimes, and Michel Sampson. Titles are long, with the searing emotional sound that Ayler was peaking at during this time – and titles include "For John Coltrane", "Change Has Come", and "Truth is Marching On". ✨✧ Bill BarronHot Line – The Tenors Of Bill Barron/Booker Ervin (Savoy Jazz – with bonus track) ... LP
Savoy, 1962. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A stunner from Bill Barron! The set's one of the few rare sides that Barron cut as a leader during the early 60s – and it ranks right up there with work by Ornette Coleman or Joe Harriott for sheer raw modern power! The group's a quintet – with Barron and Booker Ervin on tenor, Larry Ridley on bass, Kenny Barron on piano, and Andrew Cyrille on drums – and the warm interplay between Ridley's bass and Barron's piano provides a striking contrast to the sharp-edged horn of Barron and the adventurous drumming of Cyrille. Tracks chop around in a modal groove, but still also retain a bit of soul jazz flair – and like all of Barron's best work, they never forget how to swing, and swing they do! Titles include "Bill's Boogie", "Groovin", "A Cool One", "Playhouse March", and "Work Song". 80's pressing, with previously unissued track "Billie's Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s pressing, with previously unissued track "Billie's Bounce". Cover has some light wear near the bottom, but overall this is a great copy.)

✨✧ Art BlakeyMoanin' ... LP
Blue Note, 1958. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Art Blakey's first true moments of genius! This transitional version of the Jazz Messengers included two parts – Lee Morgan and Bobby Timmons – of the holy Morgan/Shorter/Timmons trilogy, and it's also got the added bonus of Benny Golson on tenor, who was at the height of his power at this point. The record really shines in ways that few Blakey albums shone since his days with Horace Silver – in that it's a forum for fresh new writing, most importantly Golson's landmark compositions "Blues March" and "Along Came Betty", and Timmons' instant classic "Moanin". The whole album's wonderful, though, and Golson's edgey modernism adds a strong dimension to the group's usual soulful romping groove! (And in fact, as a tribute to the group's success, the album was initially named Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, but quickly retitled Moanin in this version, after the big hit single!) LP, Vinyl record album
(70s black b pressing. Cover has a cut corner, some wear, and a catalog number in marker on both sides.)

✨✧ Gary BurtonGenuine Tong Funeral (RCA Masters) ... LP
RCA (France), 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the most ambitious projects ever from vibist Gary Burton – an extended piece written by Carla Bley – and billed as "A Dark Opera Without Words"! The work has a feel that's much more fluid than opera, though – and is a great instrumental outing that not only features Gary's vibes at their youthful best, with support from his quartet – but which also includes extra work from Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gato Barbieri on tenor, and Carla Bley herself on piano. The music is never too far out, but with angular tones and strange time changes that mark the record as being quite different from Gary's other sides for RCA. It also makes the record one of his best, too – as the set has that wonderfully fresh sound that you get from early work by Bley – never too silly, and with a serious approach to composition that also never loses sight of its roots in jazz. Titles include "The New Funeral March", "Silent Spring", "Mother Of The Dead Man", "Death Rolls", and "The New National Anthem". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s issue.)

Blue MitchellBlue Mitchell Big 6 ... LP
Riverside, 1958. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Blue in the main style of his early years at Riverside – working in an all-star group (the "Big 6" in the title), with players that include Johnny Griffin, Curtis Fuller, Wynton Kelly, Wilbur Ware, and Philly Joe Jones. Blue's leadership isn't that strong – but fortunately, the others (particularly Griffin, Ware, and Jones) gel together strongly with or without him, making the set crackle with the soulful energy of some of the best Jazzland/Riverside hardbop sides from the time. Tracks include "Sir John", "Blues March", "Big Six", and "Jamph". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 90s OJC pressing. Cover has some surface wear, bumped corner, some discoloration at the spine, and a catalog number written in marker at the top edge on both sides.)

✨✧ Wes MontgomeryBumpin On Sunset – Jazz Club ... CD
Verve/Jazzclub (Germany), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The godlike genius of guitarist Wes Montgomery – served up in some of the best recordings from that 60s period when he really found his groove! Although Wes first sounding great in a small combo setting, working with strong soul jazz touches that showed his Indianapolis roots – as the 60s moved on, he started to hit a sweeter, more sweeping approach to jazz – one that was often augmented by larger arrangements, but which still let the best focus fall on his amazing approach to the strings of the guitar – a style that was filled with rich colors and tones, but which also carried a slightly raspy undercurrent and a subtle sense of darkness. The Montgomery genius is hard to sum up in words (although we've tried!) – but the compilers of this set definitely know how to sum it up in music, and they've really done a great job of collecting Wes' best Verve and A&M sides from this time. Titles include "Impressions", "Movin Wes (part 1)", "Bumpin On Sunset", "Day In The Life", "Shadow Of Your Smile", "Up & At It", "Caravan", "13 (Death March)", "OGD (Road Song)", "Tequila", "The Other Man's Grass Is Always Greener", and "Milestones". Gaetano PartipiloBesides – Songs From The Sixties ... CD
Schema (Italy), 2013. Used ... $9.99
Just a few of the songs here are from the 60s, and many of the rest are written by Gaetano Partipilo himself – and mixed with a few Brazilian numbers as well – all to round out a wonderfully rich sounding album that really lives up to the best Schema tradition! Instrumentation is mostly live jazz – played by Gaetano on alto sax, as well as Nicola Conte on guitar, Pietro Lusso on Fender Rhodes, Pasquale Bardaro on vibes, and Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet – but maybe best of all are the vocals, which shift a bit over the course of the record, and include raspy soul lines from MR Natural, and warmer female vocals from Alice Ricciardi, Heidi Vogel, and Rosalia De Souza. Half the tracks are instrumentals, and the mix of modes really makes the album great – never settled too far into one comfortable corner, and really taking the listener on a great journey overall! Titles include "Essa Mulher", "Se Voce Pensa", "Beyond The Days", "Jive Samba", "Right Now", "13 Death March", "Wall & Water", "Atras Da Porta", "The Sticks", "Moon Flower", and "Ocean Dance". CD

✨✧ Shorty RogersWay Up There ... LP
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Shorty Rogers is definitely way up there with this classic album for Atlantic Records – hitting heights that even go beyond his more famous sides for RCA! The groove here is sharp, but also has room for lots of individual flavors too – thanks to different groupings of west coast players who include Bud Shank on alto, Jimmy Giuffre on baritone and tenor, Lou Levy on piano, Shelly Manne on drums, Barney Kessel on guitar, and Pete Candoli, Conte Candoli, Harry Edison, and Don Fagerquist on trumpets! Shorty himself wrote nearly all the tracks on the set – at a point at which he was really hitting his stride as a composer, doing an incredible job of mixing modern ideas and swinging jazz – as you'll hear on cuts that include "Pixieland", "Solarization", "Baklava Bridge", "March Of The Martians", "Moten Swing", and "Wail Of Two Cities". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a name in pen, light aging – and looks nice overall!)
