Jerry GonzalezYa Yo Me Cure ... LP
American Clave, 1980. Very Good+ ... $19.99
One of the best Latin jazz LPs of the time, with a crack lineup that includes Hilton Ruiz, Steve Turre, Milton Cardona, and Jerry himself on trumpet. Highlights include a great version of Wayne Shorter's "Nefertiti", Monk's "Evidence", "Caravan", and a goofy take on the "Theme to I Love Lucy" – an important enough piece of Latin music in it's own right. LP, Vinyl record album
(In the foil cover, with some surface wear. Vinyl has cosmetic sleeve impressions.)

Kirk Lightsey with Freddie HubbardTemptation ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... $16.99
A very hip group, and a wonderful meeting between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Kirk Lightsey! We always like Kirk, but love him even more when he's working with a horn player – as his sound seems to catch fire, and move with even bolder notes than usual – which is definitely the case on the album's opener, a nice take on Hubbard's classic "Gibraltar" – in a spirit that continues strongly throughout! Bass is from Santi Debriano, drums are from Eddie Gladden, and Jerry Gonzalez plays percussion on one track – and Freddie's in that great 80s sound of his – a mode that's a return to the straighter hardbop of his Blue Note years, but with the phrasing learned during his 70s funk years – on titles that include "Gibraltar", "Evidence", "Brigitte", "Temptation", and "Society Red". ✨✧ Virgilo MartiSaludando A Los Rumberos (German pressing) ... LP
Globe Style (Germany), 1984. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Marti works here with an excellent group of New York Latin jazz players – including Claudio Roditi on trumpet, Jerry Gonzalez on congas, Paquito Pastor on piano, Yomo Toro on cuatro, and Andy Gonzalez on bass. The album's as strong as most of Marti's work from the 80s – with a strong no-nonsense traditional Latin groove – and titles include "Mucho Cante", "Todos Vuelven", "Inyere", and "La Mula". ✨✧ Ruben Lopez FurstJazz Argentino/Jazz En La Universidad ... CD
Melopea/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1966/1967. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Two rare albums from this great pianist – back to back on a single CD! First up is Jazz Argentino – key work from Ruben Lopez Furst, a wonderful pianist from the Argentine scene of the 60s – heard here on one of his greatest albums ever! Despite the local placement in the title, the set's got a really universal appeal – a quality that easily puts Baby Lopez Furst in the company of Bill Evans, Hampton Hawes, or a rare few imaginative pianists from up north! Furst's sense of color and timing are wonderful – ringing out fluidly, yet always with a sense of surprise that keeps us hanging on each new note – nothing that's ever hokey or heard-before – handled here with a vibrancy that's simply stunning. Many numbers are trio tracks, but the set also features guest trumpet and tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Israel", "Un Abajea Duriente", "Los Viejos", "Al Este Del Sol", "Sometime Ago", and "Cartas De Amor". Next is Jazz En La Universidad – one of the real highlights of the Argentine jazz scene of the 60s – a seminal album from pianist Ruben "Baby" Lopez – easily one of that country's greatest jazz musicians in the decade! Ruben's got a sound that opens up with the lyrical sense of space and tone first introduced by Bill Evans, but he's also more note-full at other moments – playing with a command of the piano that would have made him huge, had he recorded on the American or European scenes of the time! There's a warm balance between his instrument, the bass of Jorge Gonzalez, and drums of Nestor Astratta – one that goes past conventional piano trio modes, and which really reminds us of our favorite Saba/MPS sessions of the period. Titles include "Un Poco Alegre", "Hombre Amaestrado", "En Tu Dulce Modo", "Hermosoa Amor", and "Necesitare Alguien Mas". CD

✨✧ Azar LawrenceMystic Journey ... CD
Furthermore, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Brilliantly burning work from Azar Lawrence – wonderfully mature, yet filled with all the soulful fire of his best albums of the 70s! Lawrence plays both tenor and soprano sax – blowing with this searching, stretched-out post-Coltrane vibe – but as with all his best work, there's a strong sense of rhythm that really holds things together – a living pulse that grabs us right away, and really draws us in beautifully – reminding us why we've always treasured Azar's records so much! Other players are great too – and include Eddie Henderson on trumpet and flugelhorn, Gerald Hayes on alto, Benito Gonzalez on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums – really helping the group find their groove. Titles include "Quest", "Walk Spirit Talk Spirit", "Mystic Journey", "Journey's End", "Starting Point", "Adrees", and "Say It Over Again". CD

✨✧ William ParkerMigration Of Silence Into & Out Of The Tone World Vols 1 to 10 (10CD set) ... CD
Centering/Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy 10CD set ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD
