✨✧ Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache BandFire Dance ... CD
Milestone, 1996. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Trumpeter Jerry Gonzalez cooks away nicely with his Fort Apache band – swinging in that hip mix of Latin and jazz that's always made the combo so great! This sweet set was recorded live, which gives the band lots of long, open-ended tunes on which to really open up and do their thing – rhythms cooked up beautifully by the trio of Larry Willis on piano, Andy Gonzalez on bass, and Steve Berrios on drums and percussion – topped with magnificent hork work from Jerry on trumpet, John Stubblefield on tenor, and Joe Ford on alto and soprano sax. The live setting gives the production a really classic no-nonsense feel – and titles include "Isabel The Liberator", "Today's Nights", "Elegua", "Ugly Beauty", and "Verdad Amarga". CD

✨✧ VariousShibuya Jazz Classics – Gonzalez Suzuki (Soul Bossa Trio) Collection – Naoya Matsuoka Issue ... CD
Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
13 jazz dance classics from 70s Japan – all pulled together by Gonzalez Suzuki of Soul Bossa Trio! This set's the 5th installment in the ultra-hip Shibuya Jazz Classics series – and like the others, it offers a fantastic array of groovers that were mostly only issued in Japan back in the day, expertly chosen with a real feel for the modern scene! Nearly all the tracks feature work by keyboardist Naoya Matsuoka – a player who's equally great on acoustic piano as he is on electric keys, moog, and synth – always hitting some nicely punctuated notes, and sending the tunes along with a groove-happy approach that's greatly appreciated by our ears. The general feel is a lot like some of the 70s west coast fusion work of the time – particularly tracks on labels like Catalyst or Discovery – drenched in sunny influences from Latin and Brazilian music, all given a breezy Pacific spin. Titles in clude "If You Wanna Go Away", "Take 6 4 5", "The Man From Yoruba", "The Sun Also Rises", "Fiesta Fiesta", "Feeling So Nice", "Suppose It Rains", and "I Saw Zill One Day", all by Naoya Matsuoka – plus "Night Trip", "In The Morning", and "Antes De Mais Nada", all by Pacific Jam – a group that featured Matsuoka. William ParkerMigration Of Silence Into & Out Of The Tone World Vols 1 to 10 (10CD set) ... CD
Centering/Aum Fidelity, 2021. New Copy 10CD set ... $79.99 89.99
An incredible collection of work from the legendary bassist William Parker – not a package of older material, but a full ten albums' worth of new recordings done expressly for this set – showing Parker not only as a budding multi-instrumentalist over the space of the past few years – but also a very collaborative composer, with a much wider range of expression than anyone might have guessed a few decades ago! Parker is still a completely essential part of the avant jazz underground, but he's also emerging as a mature statesman – able to bridge both scenes and generations with material like this – a hugely collaborative effort that features contributions from Lisa Sokolov, Kyoko Kitamura, Ellen Christi, Jalalu Kalvert Nelson, Eri Yamamoto, Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, Andrea Wolper, the Universal Tonality String Quartet, and other groups as well. Each CD features a different side of Parker's creative genius – and together, the package is maybe the richest statement of his powers we've ever heard! CD

✨✧ Chico O'FarrillPure Emotion ... CD
Milestone, 1995. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bold-toned Latin jazz from Chico O'Farrill – one of a handful of excellent 90s sessions cut for Milestone Records – a label who really let Chico reclaim the glory of his older Verve albums from years back! The style here is a bit more modern – echoes of some of the Latin jazz changes that took place as the 70s moved into the 80s – but the setting is still relatively traditional, too – a large jazz group arranged and conducted by O'Farrill, with all the best Cuban influences he brought to his work in the US over the years. Players include Mario Rivera on saxes, Victor Paz and Michael Mossman on trumpets, Lenny Hambro on alto and flute, Jerry Gonzalez on percussion, and Andy Gonzalez on bass – and titles include "Igor's Dream", "Pura Emocion", "Pianits", "Campina", and "Chico & The Men". ✨✧ Kirk Lightsey with Freddie HubbardTemptation ... CD
Timeless/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very hip group, and a wonderful meeting between trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and pianist Kirk Lightsey! We always like Kirk, but love him even more when he's working with a horn player – as his sound seems to catch fire, and move with even bolder notes than usual – which is definitely the case on the album's opener, a nice take on Hubbard's classic "Gibraltar" – in a spirit that continues strongly throughout! Bass is from Santi Debriano, drums are from Eddie Gladden, and Jerry Gonzalez plays percussion on one track – and Freddie's in that great 80s sound of his – a mode that's a return to the straighter hardbop of his Blue Note years, but with the phrasing learned during his 70s funk years – on titles that include "Gibraltar", "Evidence", "Brigitte", "Temptation", and "Society Red".
