Armando Trovajoli —
Il Vuoto ... LP FourFlies (Italy), 1964. New Copy ...
Early work from the tremendous Armando Trovajoli, but a set that shows that the maestro was already at the top of his game – coming off of some great experience on the Italian jazz scene of the late 50s, and able to blend that experience with more cinematic modes! The vibe here is different than the soundtrack jazz of Piero Piccioni in the early 60s – more small combo, and more in the mode of a jazz record at times – with very strong interplay between the core group of musicians, and interaction between Trovajoli's piano and the work Carlo Zoffoli on vibraphone, Gino Marinacci on baritone sax and flute, Enzo Grillini on electric guitar, Berto Pisano on double bass. The whole thing's wonderfully groovy – maybe years ahead of its time in terms of color and tone, especially for a soundtrack – and titles include "Evasione", "Etasi", and "Frenesia" – plus a number of variations on the title theme!
