Blue Note, 1947. Used ... $6.99
A full LP issue of material that Fats Navarro recorded for Blue Note during the 78 and 10" LP eras – compiled here with master and alternate takes of tunes that were some of the few that Navarro ever recorded for the label! Some of the work was recorded under groups led by Tadd Dameron and Budd Powell, and a few more under the Howard McGhee-Fats Navarro Boptet name – but all tracks feature Fats at his best – blowing with that sparkling tone that helped transform the sound of bop in the early years! Titles on this first volume include "Wail", "The Chase", "The Squirrel", "Our Delight", and "Dameronia". CD

Bud PowellAmazing Bud Powell Vol 1 (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note, 1953. Used ... $3.99
The first 12" LP to compile Bud Powell sides for Blue Note – nearly all of which were some of his best work of the 50s! The incredible pianist is caught here in the company of a few different trios – with drummers like Roy Haynes or Max Roach – and there's also a few nice large group tracks, with Fats Navarro and Sonny Rollins joining in. It's rare to hear Powell in such a setting, as the bulk of his work during the time was trio sessions – and the recordings here – "Dance of The Infidels", "Wail", "Bouncing With Bud", and "52nd St. Theme" – are some of his best. CD features a few bonus alternates too. CD

Kai Winding/Brew Moore/Eddie Lockjaw DavisIn The Beginning – Bebop ... CD
Savoy, Late 40s. Used ... $3.99
A nice selection of late 40s work by a few groups, collected by Savoy as a kind of introduction to the bebop movement, a look back at the early days of bop. Kai Winding and his quintet, featuring Allen Eager on tenor and Shelley Manne on drums, lead off the set with four tracks including "Mr. Dues" and "O-Go-Mo". From there tenor sax man Brew Moore's quartet, featuring Jimmy Johnson on bass and Stan Levey on drums, contribute four tracks including "Blew Brew" and "More Brew". Eddie Lockjaw Davis rounds out the set, with a group that features Fats Navarro on trumpet and Al Haig on piano. His four tracks include "Spinal" and "Red Pepper". CD

Blue Note, 1949/1951. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Well-done reissue of Bud's first LP for Blue Note – featuring smoking sides that were some of his best work of the 50s! Powell plays on 9 tracks with a trio that includes Max Roach and Curley Russell – but there's also 11 more tracks with a larger group that features Roy Haynes and Tommy Potter on rhythm, plus Fats Navarro and Sonny Rollins on trumpet and tenor. It's rare to hear Powell in a horn-driven group like this, as the bulk of his work during the time was trio sessions – and that added touch makes the recordings here sparkle even more! Titles include "Dance of The Infidels", "Wail", "Bouncing With Bud", "Un Poco Loco", "Night In Tunisia", and "52nd St. Theme". CD features 20 tracks, including a number of alternate takes. CD

✨✧ Louis SmithHere Comes Louis Smith ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... Out Of Stock
Trumpeter Louis Smith made only two records for Blue Note, but both of them are great! This set's arguably his most famous – because of a rare uncredited appearance by Cannonball Adderley, working here under the "nom de date" of "Buckshot La Funke" – and blowing with a power that beats most of his other Mercury sessions of the late 50s! But the real credit here should go to Louis Smith – who's got a sense of power and command that should have made him one of THE trumpeters of the 50s – an emerging young talent to stand alongside Lee Morgan, Nat Adderley, and other post-Fats Navarro/Clifford Brown talents on the instrument. Smith sparkles throughout with a mix of soul and modernism we really love – and an earthy way of blowing the horn that doesn't always reach its goals, but which draws even more energy from its ability to try! The rhythm section on the album's also very tight – with Art Taylor on drums, Doug Watkins on bass, and either Tommy Flanagan or Duke Jordan on piano – and tracks include "Ande", "Brill's Blues", "South Side", and "Val's Blues". CD

The package begins with early 78rpm sides from the late 40s, then moves into material from full albums in the 50s – and ends with one track from 1963. A few sides feature added horns from Fats Navarro on trumpet and Sonny Rollins on tenor – and the set features a total of 75 tracks in all, plus a 40 page booklet of notes. CD

✨✧ Dexter GordonSettin' The Pace ... CD
Savoy, 1945/1946/1947. Used ... Out Of Stock
The near complete studio recordings done by Dexter Gordon as a leader for Savoy in the mid 40s – key 78rpm recordings that helped redefine the sound of the tenor in jazz! The material here is all strongly boppish – and presented with alternate takes on a number of the sessions, making for a whopping 23 tracks that cover most of Dexter's master takes and a good number of unissued alternates! First up are 4 tracks with a 1945 quartet that includes Sadik Hakim on piano – followed by 8 more from a 1946 session with Bud Powell on piano, Max Roach on drums, and Leonard Hawkins on trumpet. These are followed by 3 great tracks from Gordon's 1947 session with Leo Parker on baritone and Tadd Dameron on piano – which roll into the last 8 tracks, all from a 1947 session that includes Fats Navarro on trumpet and Dameron again on piano. Titles include "So Easy", "Dexter's Riff", "Dexter's Deck", "Blow Mr Dexter", "Dexter's Minor Mad", "Dexter Digs In", "Dexter Rides Again", "Long Tall Dexter", and "Index". CD
