A triple length set of work from the team of Evan Parker and John Stevens – presented here as a 2CD set! The first part of the package features both volumes 1 and 2 of the Longest Night sessions from 1976 – very free duets between these two ex-partners in the Spontaneous Music Ensemble – a session with very little structure at all, and sounds that are almost more FMP than other Ogun albums of the time! Evan Parker plays soprano sax throughout – and Stevens alternates between percussion and cornet – using mostly the former, but sometimes a bit of the latter in ways that have a surprising sense of presence. Parker's notes are nicely shaped on the best numbers – bringing in occasional more human moments amidst more Lacy-like bleats and blonks on the soprano. Titles include "21.25", "19.11", "19.44", "21.47", "22.18", "23.12",, and "23.40. Next up is the album Corner To Corner – recorded in 1993, nearly 20 years after the first 2 records – but with a quality that's amazingly similar, and which shows both Parker and Stevens to still be at the farthest, freest edges of British jazz. The sounds of the session clearly mark it as a belated follow-up to the first date – but the titles this time around are a bit less oblique, and include "Corner To Corner", "Rubber", "Angles", "Incidence", and "Reflections". The set begins with four Art Ensemble albums – Nice Guys, Full Force, Urban Bushman, and The Third Decade – all of which came out as a statement of the group's strengths in the late 70s and early 80s – their first mainstream appearance after a few years of being very underground, and material that helped set a whole new standard for avant jazz expression in the generation to come! Next is the fantastic album Divine Love, by trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – not necessarily an Art Ensemble album, but one that does feature great work from trumpeter Leo Smith – plus trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, bassist Charlie Haden, and vibist Bobby Naughton. Next are four albums by Lester Bowie – two smaller group, and two with his Brass Fantasy ensemble – the records The Great Pretender, All The Magic/The One & Only, I Only Have Eyes For You, and Avant Pop. Then, after Bowie's early passing, the Art Ensemble recorded their beautiful Tribute To Lester – as a trio lineup with Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye. Mitchell takes the helm next – on a surprisingly big flurry of projects for ECM – records that often show a deeper compositional strand in his music – on records that include Nine To Get Ready, Composition/Improvisation, Far Side, Bells For The South Side, and Boustrophedon – the last of which was led by Evan Parker, with Mitchell in the Transatlantic Art Ensemble. Last up are three records by drummer Jack DeJohnette for ECM – New Directions and New Directions In Europe, both featuring a group with Lester Bowie on trumpet – and Made In Chicago, which features Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and Muhal Ricard Abrams. The first two long tracks are from a 1972 performances in Germany – and feature an early version of the group conducted by Buxton Orr, but with leader Barry Guy in strong formation – in a very large lineup that includes saxes from Evan Parker, Mike Osborne, Trevor Watts, and Alan Wakeman; trumpets from Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Mark Charig, and Dave Holdsworth; trombones from Paul Rutherford, Mike Gibbs, and Paul Nieman; guitar from Derek Bailey; piano from Howard Riley; percussion and drums from Paul Lytton and Tony Oxley; and more bass from Jeff Clyne and Chris Laurence. One of the few recordings available from the classic period of Chris McGregor's famous Brotherhood Of Breath ensemble – the African-tinged jazz combo that grew out of the wreckage of the ex-patriation of South Africa's Blue Notes ensemble as it mixed with members of the London scene in the late 60s. The resultant group was one of the most compelling cross cultural moments in jazz history – a mix of players that included Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza, Nick Evans, Harry Beckett, Harry Miller, Evan Parker, and Louis Moholo. It's true that sometimes Mitchell can sometimes be very concerned with space and sonic textures – but here, he's got this focused energy that's really full-on from the start – extended blowing that's almost more like soprano sax work from Evan Parker or Steve Lacy, and which takes us back a lot more to Mitchell's roots than some of his later, more mannered projects. A beautiful double-length package of work from drummer Louis Moholo – a 2CD set that features one record from recent years, and a key classic from the 70s! Spirits Rejoice is one of the strongest 70s statements from ex-Blue Notes drummer Moholo – recorded in the company of fellow expatriots and UK avant jazzers that include Johnny Dyani, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, and Harry Miller. The album shifts easily between strongly rhythmic passages that show Moholo's roots in the South African jazz scene, and other, freer sections that also illustrate his importance in the European avant scene of the 70s – and overall, the record's got a beautifully soulful quality that guides it well through all of these moments. Titles include "Wedding Hymn", "Khanya Apho Ukhona", "Ithi Gqi", "Amaxesha Osizi", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me". That record is followed here by 1995's Bra Louis Bra Tebs – a session with a similar style, especially in its use of African-inspired rhythms – but one that also features a different lineup, and some great use of vocals! Francine Luce sings on a number of the album's best tracks – in a style that's almost an avant-tuned approach to vocalese, and which seems to carry echoes of Norma Winstone – a voice that's dreamy one minute, challenging the next – and often used as a key instrument in the combo's lineup of tenor, alto, trumpet, piano, bass, and drums. Amazing work from this seminal group on the FMP scene – a quartet led by pianist Alexander Von Schlippenbach, but equally balanced between the saxes of Evan Parker, bass of Peter Kowald, and percussion of Paul Lovens! We're not sure how much to take the "nails" in the title seriously, but it does sound as if Schlippenbach is playing prepared piano at times – or perhaps his command of the keyboard is just so strong, he can make other-worldly elements come from the instrument whenever he wants! Much of the music has a full-on FMP intensity – that non-stop, sonically adventurous quality inherited from Machine Gun – spun out over three great live improvisations, titled "Range", "Black Holes", and "Three Nails Left".
