✨✧ Etta JonesHollar! ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lost gem from Etta's early 60s years on Prestige – an album that has her singing with three different groups on the session, but coming out on top every time! The format's actually a good one – not nearly as schizophrenic as you might think – as Prestige pairs Etta with a range of some of their best players of the time, including Lem Winchester on vibes, Jerome Richardson and Oliver Nelson on tenor sax, Wally Richardson and Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Richard Wyands on piano. All tracks have a laidback, late nite soul jazz feel – and Etta sings beautifully on titles that include "Give Me The Simple Life", "The More I See You", "Reverse The Charges", "Looking Back", and a great Latin take on "Nature Boy". ✨✧ Clark TerryTop & Bottom Brass ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1960. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Clark Terry's breezy trumpet is paired with Don Butterfield's tuba for a real "top and bottom" session of brassy jazz. The two of them are backed by a sharp rhythm section that includes Jimmy Jones on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The set's got a lot of nice originals, and despite what you might think, this is actually one of Terry's harder sessions. Cuts include "Top N Bottom", "Mardi Gras Waltz", "Blues For Etta", and "Mili-Terry". CD

Cedar WaltonThree Sundays In The Seventies – Live At The Left Bank ... CD
Label M, 1971/1972/1974. Used ... $6.99
A brilliant slice of rare work by Cedar Walton – tracks from three different live sessions of the early 70s, all of them recorded at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore, and all of them previously unreleased! The bulk of the work features Walton with the core group of players he was working with at the time – Sam Jones on bass, Billy Higgins on drums, and Clifford Jordan on tenor – all grooving in the mode of the Eastern Rebellion albums or some of Jordan's own sessions – a post-Coltrane take on soul jazz, mixing the spiritual with the modal with hardbop! Etta Jones sings guest vocals on two bluesier numbers, and Bill Hardman blows a bit of trumpet on some tracks – and titles include "Naima", "Pinocchio", "This Guy's In Love With You", "Plexus", and "I'm Not So Sure". One of the last times that Ammons and Stitt were reunited in a live setting – part of the famous series of recordings done by Baltimore's Left Bank Jazz Society, recorded with a core trio of Cedar Walton, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins. Etta Jones sings on two of the album's seven tracks – and the twin tenors blow together on all tracks but one, a gentle reading of "Love Story", done by Walton, Jones, and Higgins. Titles include "Just In Time", "Autumn Leaves", "Blues Up & Down", and "They Can't Take That Away From Me" – all done in very extended versions! CD

Quincy JonesRoots – Original Soundtrack ... LP
A&M, 1976. Near Mint- ... $5.99
Quincy Jones may be best remembered for his funky soundtrack work of the 70s – but the man can also hit a deeper, more serious vein when he wants – as he does on this ambitious album-length project inspired by the landmark Roots mini-series! The music isn't a straight soundtrack from the program, but instead evokes the longer narrative over the passage of its different selections – working as its own "saga of an American family", as it moves from African roots, through years of oppression, to moments of pride and power – amidst larger orchestrations from Jones, with help from Letta Mbulu on some key vocals, and more help from Bill Summers, James Cleveland, and even Lou Gossett. Titles include "Many Rains", "Free At Last", "Jumpin De Broom", "Ole Fiddler", "Boyhood To Manhood", "Oluwa", and "Motherland". (Soundtracks, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch & minor corner bumps.)

✨✧ Nat King Cole & Quincy JonesSwiss Radio Days Vol 33 – Nat King Cole & Quincy Jones ... CD
TCB (Switzerland), 1960. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful set by Nat King Cole joined by conductor/bandleader Quincy Jones and his Big Band – performing live in Zurich on May 1, 1960 – and what an impeccable performance it is! Quincy was touring with a pretty amazing line-up in his Big Band at this point – with Benny Bailey, Jimmy Cleveland, Melba Liston, Phil Woods, Sahib Shihab, Joe Harris and more – and they kick off the set with a couple gentler numbers before swinging more heavily on a couple, then introduce Nat – who's voice is in perfect form here. He sings his hits with the big band, some additional strings and a pared down trio format for a few – so we really get a broad representation of what these consummate performers can do in a number of settings, all in one concert, to boot. Wonderful stuff – released for the first time ever! Titles include "Moanin'", The Midnight Sun Will Never Set", "Airmail Special", "Unforgettable", "Sweet Lorraine", "Tea For Two", "Madrid", "The Phantom Blues", "Route 66", "Joe Turner's Blues", "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set" and more. Also includes a 5 minute interview with Nat. (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Quincy JonesCinema Of Quincy Jones (6CD box set) ... CD
Universal (France), 1960s/Early 70s. Used 6 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at an overlooked side of the genius of Quincy Jones – not his jazz work, not his productions for famous soul artists, but instead his huge legacy of soundtrack material – a part of Q's career that really took off in the 60s! By the time he started working in films, Jones had already had a decade under his belt as one of the hippest arrangers, leaders, and composers in jazz – and the film business really respected those talents, and allowed Quincy to bring some really fresh styles into play – modes that really opened up the vibe of American cinema, and also paved the way for the funky styles of the 70s! As that decade approached, Jones left behind the cinema to take on some more higher-profile records of his own – but all the charms of those great albums can be found here at their roots – in this stunning collection of soundtrack material, some of which has never been on CD. The package is way more than just a sampler – and includes an album's worth of material from the films The Pawnbroker, Slender Thread, Mirage, The Deadly Affair, In The Heat Of The Night, In Cold Blood, Walk Don't Run, The Italian Job, Lost Man, and John & Mary – plus two versions of the love theme from The Getaway, and a bonus CD with 18 tracks – titled Q's highlights, and featuring tracks from his Mercury records – plus more by Billy Preston, Arthur Prysock, Bill Cosby, Shirley Horn, Letta Mbulu, Toots Thielemans, and others. Even features the "Sanford & Son" and "Ironside" themes! (Soundtracks, Jazz) CD

Great Jazz TrioMoreover ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About May 29, 2024
A slightly different lineup than usual for the Great Jazz Trio – but a great one too, and proof that the group had way more to offer than just familiar trio grooving! This time around, Eddie Gomez is on bass – making for a wonderfully full, rich sound in the rhythms – a perfect complement for the sly drumming of Al Foster – who adds an edge to the record that you don't always get on other sessions from the group. And Hank Jones really seems to pick up this edge in his acoustic piano playing – and then pushes it even further on his work on Fender Rhodes, which appears on a few of the album's best tracks. All these changes make for a nicely compelling record – one that's got a bit more of a soulful bottom than you might expect – and titles include "Phasar", "Pauletta", "Moreover", "My Cherie Amour", and "Another World". ✨✧ Harold LandWestward Bound ... CD
Reel To Reel, Early 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic addition to the too-small catalog of work from the wonderful Harold Land – the west coast tenorist whose sound was maybe more of a bridge to the New York scene in the 50s and 60s – as you'll hear in this collection of well-recorded and unreleased material from his key years on the scene! All the cuts were recorded in Seattle, not LA – and Land is in top formation throughout – working in a few different groups with excellent players – including the mighty trumpeter Carmell Jones on two of the album's tracks, maybe worth the price of the record alone – plus Hampton Hawes and Buddy Montgomery on piano, Monk Montgomery on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. Titles include "Triplin The Groove", "Vendetta", "Beepdurple", "Beauty", "Blue N Boogie", "Who Can I Turn To", and "Happily Dancing/Deep Harmonies Falling". CD
