Ella FitzgeraldComplete 1950 to 1960 Piano Duets ... CD
Verve/Essential Jazz (Spain), 1950s. Used 2 CDs ... $9.99
A wonderful way to hear the genius of Ella Fitzgerald at its best – as the set features all tracks that just have the first lady of jazz singing alongside a piano – spare, open, and in a way that really lets you get all all the care and nuance that Ella can bring to a tune! Most of the recordings here are from the 50s – quite unusual for the time – and they're matched with one more set of duets that Ella Recorded for Pablo Records in the 70s, at a time when she was exploring more intimate modes in a really great way. There's a host of great surprises along the way – and the set begins with 8 tracks from the album Ella Sings Gershwin, with Ellis Larkins on piano – then moves to another Decca duet with Larkins on the album Songs In A Mellow Mood. The set follows with two spare numbers from the Songbook recordings for Verve – one with Oscar Peterson on piano, one with Paul Smith. Then, Smith returns on another set of 13 tracks taken from the rare Let No Man Write My Epitaph album for Verve – then adds in a spare duet with Tommy Flanagan from the 1964 A Juan Les Pins album – before ending with the full set list from the wonderful Ella & Oscar album from 1976 – 7 more duets with Oscar Peterson on piano. ✨✧ Ella FitzgeraldElla – The Lost Berlin Tapes ... CD
Verve, 1962. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ella Fitzgerald recorded one of her most successful albums in Berlin – a smoking live set that gave the world her take on "Mack The Knife" – and this set marks a fantastic second chapter to that record – unreleased tapes that appear here for the first time ever! The concert's from a different year than the previous record, but done in a very similar mode – Ella in front of a very enthusiastic concert crowd, running through upbeat, swinging takes on a variety of classics – all at a moment when both her vocal skills and onstage personality were at an all-time high! The group is just a trio – Paul Smith on piano, Wilfred Middlebrooks on bass, and Stan Levey on drums – but they swing things as hard as an orchestra, and merge with the vocals in a really wonderful way. Titles include a great version of "My Kind Of Boy" – with Ella switching around a lot of the lyrics – plus "C'Est Magnifique", "Good Morning Heartache", "Hallelujah I Love Him So", "Summertime", "Mr Paganini", "Mack The Knife", "Angel Eyes", "Cheek To Cheek", "Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie", "Taking A Chance On Me", and "Jersey Bounce". ✨✧ Ella Fitzgerald & Joe PassTake Love Easy (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Pablo/JVC (Japan), 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the great Pablo Records efforts to revisit the jazz sound of the 50s – but in fresh new ways allowed by the freer recording modes of the 70s! The album features Ella Fitgerald and Joe Pass, plus nobody else – just voice and guitar coming together in quiet, introspective ways that are completely sublime, and a very nice change from some of Ella's fuller band recordings of the few years before this album. And far from being sleepy, the intimacy of the record almost seems to set a new kind of fire – one that comes from the gentle persona of Ella, which is a far cry from the glass-breaking singer that she'd come to be known as in the mainstream! Titles include "Take Love Easy", "Once I Loved", "Lush Life", "You're Blase", "A Foggy Day", "I Want To Talk About You", and "You Go To My Head". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

Ella Fitzgerald, recorded in a nice lean setting – with mostly just the piano of Oscar Peterson to back her up, plus a bit of extra bass from Ray Brown on a few of the album's tracks! We love Fitzgerald in this mode – which is quite a change from some of her more familiar 70s work, and really shows the singer in her best light possible – handling things right out front, with an inherent sense of swing that's completely sublime! Peterson is great here too – playing with some of those more ragged edges that you'll get on his spare sessions for Pablo – some nice bluesy undercurrents that really help shape the sound of the record. Titles include "Mean To Me", "April In Paris", "Street Of Dreams", "I Hear Music", "More Than You Know", and "Midnight Sun". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

Vintage vocal work from the great Ella Fitzgerald – recorded at a time when she was really hitting her prime in the new Verve Records jazz generation – set up here by an all-star JATP group of players from that legendary label! Oscar Peterson's the main player pictured on the cover, but the set's also swung strongly with work from Barney Kessel on guitar, Ray Brown on bass, and drums from JC Heard – and on one of the album's tracks, the combo gets help from Lester Young on tenor and Charlie Shavers on trumpet. Tracks are nicely tight, and Ella is in very fantastic dynamic formation – with that kind of energy that often made her live sets so different than her studio recordings of the period – on titles that include "Lady Be Good", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "The Continental", "My Heart Stood Still", "The Man I Love", "Oscar's Tune", "A Tisket A Tasket", and "You Belong To Me". A big set of work from the lovely Blossom Dearie – one of the most unique singers in jazz, and a great pianist too! Blossom first rose to fame on the scene in Paris, but quickly returned home to the US – where she cut some beautiful albums for Verve in the 50s – sprightly vocal sides that were very different than some of the torchy modes of the previous generation, and even different than other 50s work by singers like Ella Fitzgerald or Sarah Vaughan! The charms of Blossom are impossible to describe in words, but they'll grab you right away upon first listen – and you'll get plenty of listening here – as the 3CD set begins with material from her Paris years, including the album Miss Blossom Dearie Et Sa Musique Jazz Sweet, the EP Blossom Dearie Piano, and then moves onto verve albums that include Blossom Dearie, Give Him The Ooh La La, Once Upon A Summertime, My Gentleman Friend, and Sings Comden & Green. 71 tracks in all – with notes in French and English! Philips/Universal (Germany), Mid 60s. New Copy 5CD ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful tribute to this European singer – the lovely Rita Reys, served up here in a package that features five of her best albums, all in little LP-styled sleeves! First up is a record on which Rita Reys meets Oliver Nelson – and a host of other great jazz talents, including Lee Konitz, Benny Bailey, Sahib Shihab, and Klaus Doldinger! The tracks on the set are all standards, but they're done in the tightly swinging style of Nelson's best backing work for vocalists at the time – complete with those warm tones and colors that always made his work some of our favorite in this mode. The mode is a bit different for Reys, who we normally know from more fragile settings – but it works especially well here, and almost seems to compensate for a faltering quality in her vocals at the time. Titles include "The Very Thought Of You", "Quiet Nights", "The Second Time Around", "If I Were A Bell", "Ill Wind", and "Wives & Lovers". Rita A Go Go is a wonderful live set – recorded with backings by a full orchestra led by Pim Jacobs, who bring a soulful punch to the proceedings that's really wonderful – and which helps Reys step out even more strongly than usual! Jacobs plays a bit of Hammond on the set, which is especially nice to hear next to Rita's vocals – and titles include "Call Me", "So Nice", "Sunny", "Day Tripper", "Goin Out Of My Head", and "Goodbye Sadness". Today is an incredibly groovy record from Dutch singer Rita Reys – quite possibly her grooviest ever, thanks to some very hip London touches from the Scott Walker team of Peter Knight on arrangements and Johnny Franz on production! At the end of the 60s, London was definitely one of the hippest places for a vocalist to work – a place where singers like Elis Regina, Blossom Dearie, and Ella Fitzgerald all opened up their talents tremendously. Rita does the same here – working with instrumentation that's full, flowing, and perfectly pitched to handle both the upbeat moments on the record, and the more contemplative ones – cast out over a well-chosen batch of tunes that go way beyond the standards! Titles include "The Moment Of Truth", "Soon It's Gonna Rain", "Our Language Of Love", "Sing A Rainbow", "You'd Better Love Me", "More Than You Know", and "Come Back To Me". Relax With Rita & Pim is a collection of work recorded by Dutch singer Rita Reys – all done with very jazzy backing by the Pim Jacobs Combo, a group that Rita often sang with at the time! The tunes on the set have some very groovy 60s touches – light bossa rhythms, sweet 60s approaches to rhythm, and a syncopated swing that makes the record groove a bit more than some of her other work from the time. In fact, the feel of the set's so nicely swinging, that the "relax" in the title is a bit misplaced – as out of all of Rita's records, this is the one that makes us want to get up out of the chair! Titles "Summertime", "Waltz For Debby", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Desafinado", "Bluesette", "The Boy From Ipanema", "Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Fly Me To The Moon". The last album is Rita Reys Sings Antonio Carlos Jobim – a set that shows that move into moodier modes that the vocalist took in later years – with a style that works beautifully here for the bossa compositions! Backings are by Rogier Van Otterloo, but the set also features a core combo with frequent collaborator, pianist Pim Jacobs – and the blend of piano, strings, and vocals has all the right lofty currents for these classic tunes by Jobim, with almost a mature Claus Ogerman vibe to the whole record. Titles include "Dindi", "How Insensitive", "This Happy Madness", "Triste, "Song Of The Sabia", and "Once Again". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

EmArcy/Verve, Mid 50s. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the most important recordings in the career of Sarah Vaughan – rich package of albums that really helped her refine her style strongly, and unlock an approach to jazz that nobody else could touch! Vaughan had always been a great singer, no matter what the setting – but here, she takes things a strong step forward – by mixing instrumental inspiration with careful lyrical delivery, all at a level that's quite different than Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, or any other contemporaries! Vaughan's got this mature approach that's never overdone, and never tries to call too much attention to itself – even though Sarah's singing in ways that are technically mindblowing, and set to the kinds of backings that never would have been so subtle a few years before. The beautiful package is a 7" square book – with heavy hardcovers, and lots of color images on the many pages inside – plus four CDs nestled alongside the words – containing the full albums Images, In The Land Of Hi Fi, Sarah Vaughan, At Mister Kelly's, After Hours At The London House, and No Count Sarah – plus 11 bonus tracks added to the Mister Kelly's album, and 5 more bonus tracks from the Swingin Easy record as well. 72 tracks in all – in a really lovely package! An all-star tribute to Ella Fitzgerald – a special show recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, in celebration of what would have been her 100th Birthday! Patti Austin sings "A Tisket A Tasket" and "When I Get Low I Get High", Andra Day sings "Ain't Misbehavin", Ayo & Afro Blue perform "Oh Lady Be Good", Lizz Wright sings "Love You Madly" and "The Nearness Of You", Cassandra Wilson sings "Cry Me A River", and a few other numbers feature different pairings of the artists involved.
