✨✧ Roland KirkDomino ... LP
Mercury, 1962. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A key early album from reedman Roland Kirk – at set that really has him strongly finding his voice in jazz, and transforming most of modern music in the process! The set's a perfect illustration of the way that Roland could swing with soul, yet still reach out with bold new ideas too – mixing up work on tenor sax, manzello, stritch, flute, and even nose flute – instruments often played at the same time, with this amazing multi-reed style that's really mindblowing – and which follows the soaring sheets of sound of the Coltrane generation, yet completely in its own way too! There's a sharp modern edge to most of the rhythms – thanks in part to the presence of Andrew Hill on piano and celeste on a few cuts – alongside from Vernon Martin on bass and Roy Haynes and Henry Duncan on drums – and a bit of additional piano from Wynton Kelly. The whole thing's amazing – one of those records that never fails to delight us – and titles include "3 In 1 Without The Oil", "ED", "Domino", "Meeting On Termini's Corner", and "A Stritch In Time". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with deep groove – a nice copy! Back cover has some light wear, but front looks great.)

✨✧ Donald ByrdPlaces & Spaces ... LP
Blue Note, 1975. Very Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record that was one of the highest points of Donald Byrd's career! The album's the third one he cut with producer/arranger Larry Mizell – and of all Byrd's work with Mizell, this one's the funkiest, the tightest, the most soulful, and the most perfectly realized vision of the smooth jazz funk sound that the team was aiming at. Every track is a winner – and the album glides along with a slippery sinewy groove, never pausing for a weak moment or a misplaced note, shimmering with pride in its own genius. Byrd's trumpet soars over the top, banking gracefully over waves of funky drums, spacey keyboards, and extremely well-placed vocals – all brought together perfectly by Mizell, with a tightly fused style that few people have ever been able to match in the studio since! Tracks include "Change (Makes You Want To Hustle)", "Dominoes", "Wind Parade", "Places & Spaces", and "Night Whistler". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s black b label pressing. Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Charles TylerSixty Minute Man ... LP
Adelphi, 1980. Sealed ... $14.99
Material recorded live on WBAI in Maryland, and featuring Tyler playing solo, in a very haunting vein. Tyler plays baritone on 2 tracks – "Tale Of Bari Red" and "Sixty Minute Man", the latter an almost indistinguishable version of the big hit for The Dominoes from the early 50s. The other two titles are "Midwestern Drifter" and "From St. Louis To Kansas City By Way Of Chicago", which is kind of a piece with historical references, if you couldn't figure that out by the title! LP, Vinyl record album
(Still sealed, with a cut corner.)
