John HartCheckmate ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
John Hart has a crystal clear sense of tone on his guitar – one that almost hearkens back to some of the key jazz players of the postwar years, but which also has a nice edge too – coming across with a very personal, individual quality that's supported by a fair bit of original material on the date too! The group's a quartet – with David Wong on bass and Andy Watson on drums – and Gary Smulyan contributes some wonderful lines on baritone sax, deepening the sound past the tones of Hart's guitar – creating a really great counterbalance in tone! Titles include the originals "Power Of Three", "Right To Lie", "Bittersweet", "Checkmate", "Miniature", and "123 Blues". CD

Ahmad JamalComplete Live At The Spotlite Club 1958 (Ahmad Jamal IV/Portfolio Of Ahmad Jamal plus singles) ... CD
Argo/Phoenix (Spain), 1958. Used ... $14.99
A great double-length set from Amad Jamal – material originally issued on his 4th trio album for Argo, plus the even longer Portrait Of Ahmad Jamal – one of the first 2LP sets ever issued by the label! The double CDs set features tracks all recorded at the Spotlite Club in Washington, DC on September 5 and 6, 1958 – live material, but captured with crystal-clear sound, so that the nuances of the Jamal trio come through beautifully! The collection is magical early work from Ahmad Jamal – a scintillating blend of piano, percussion, and bass – with a sound that was incredibly fresh at the time, and which still sounds pretty much so to our ears! The album crackles with imagination and rhythm – really hitting on all burners without burning itself out – and showing that even in these early days, Jamal's approach was one that could be as striking as it was mellow. Bass is by the incredible Israel Crosby, and drums are by Vernell Fournier – and the 2CD set features 25 live tracks that include "Taboo", "The Girl Next Door", "Should I", "Secret Love", "Squatty Roo", "Aki & Ukthay", "Our Delight", "Tater Pie", "Seleritus", "This Can't Be Love", "Ole Devil Moon", "Ivy", and "Let's Fall In Love". Also features 3 bonus tracks from singles – studio recordings of "Taking A Chance On Love", "Secret Love", and "Soft Winds". CD

Lee MorganDelightfulee Morgan (SHMCD pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $18.99
A really unique album from the great Lee Morgan – a set that features the trumpeter in two different settings, but in a way that really works well together! Most of the album has Lee blowing in a very cool quintet – with Joe Henderson on tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – a group who maybe bring out a slightly hipper vibe that really points the way to the rest of Morgan's direction in the late 60s, when he was really letting some more spiritual currents loose. The other two tracks on the record feature a hip larger band directed by Oliver Nelson – swinging hard in a really soulful style! Nelson's arrangements on these two tracks are great – quite progressive, with a soul jazz big band style that seems to point the way towards the 70s – and the band provides a raging backdrop that lets Lee's trumpet soar over the top in beautiful crystal clear solos. Titles include "Nite Flite", "Delightful Deggie", "Ca-Lee-So", and "Zambia". CD also features 4 bonus tracks – "Need It", "Filet Of Soul", "Zambia (big band version)", and "Delightful Deggie (big band version)". CD
(Limited edition SHM-CD pressing!)

Posi tone, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
Great work from this top-shelf group of up-and coming players – all newer artists on the Posi-Tone label, hence their name – but working with the kind of crystal clear focus on original material that always makes the label so great! If you love Posi-Tone as much as we do, you'll likely have other albums by these artists – but the lineup together is even greater than the sum of its parts – with a bold sense of arrangement that seems to have each soloist spurring the other on to new heights – amidst original material written by the members of the group! ✨✧ Matthew ShippReward – Solo Piano Suite In Four Movements ... LP
Rogue Art (France), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A solo piano set from the great Matthew Shipp, but one that's got the presence and power of most of his larger group efforts – but delivered with moments of personality and humanity that really set the whole thing apart! Shipp's exploded with new creative energy in the past decade – and this album provides a crystal clear picture of that move forward – an understanding of the piano and its ability to shape sound that we're not sure we ever heard this strongly in his early recordings – played with a mixture of focus and free-thinking that leaves us breathless throughout the entire long four-piece suite! Segments include "Piano Genesis", "The Reward", "Cosmic Clown", "Coherence Demanded", "Deeper Energy", "Angel Whispering", "The Saccharine Principle", "Energy Of Piano's Desire", and "Core Of The Soul". ✨✧ Ronny Pellers Satin SoundRonny Pellers Satin Sound (with download) ... LP
Perfect Toy (Germany), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wonderfully groovy album by a wonderfully groovy group – one headed up by singer/hornman Ronny Peller, who spent a fair bit of time working in German nightclubs before issuing this debut album with his group! Ronny's clearly a consummate entertainer – able to deliver a solo, then sing a song – while the Satin Sound combo works with plenty of influences from American jazz and soul, so that there's a strong groove on most numbers – maybe early funk touches mixed in with jazzier bits, all a perfect fit for Peller's English language lyrics. And while the front cover might have Ronny and the group dressed like some hotel band, they're more in the mode of the kind of act you'd find working some small Rathskeller stage in late 60s Munich – sounding great on tunes that include "One Day's Love", "Coming Home Babe", "Tracy", "From The North", "Baby I'm For Real", "Anna", "Baby It's You", and "Crystal Blue Persuasion".
