✨✧ Dave Brubeck & Paul DesmondDave Brubeck/Paul Desmond (Jazz At The Blackhawk/Jazz At Storyville) ... CD
Fantasy, Early 50s. Used ... $6.99
Really early work from the team of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond – cut years before their hit fame at Columbia, when Brubeck was first cooking up his modernist combo, and recording for Fantasy Records on the west coast. The set brings together a few early albums – Jazz At The Blackhawk and Jazz At Storyville – both harder to find sets that show Brubeck mostly working on turning out new versions of older standards, filtered through his modern take to time structures and phrasing. Titles include "Jeepers Creepers", "Let's Fall In Love", "I May Be Wrong", "Over The Rainbow", "Tea For Two", and "This Can't Be Love". CD
(Out of print, BMG music club pressing.)

Buck Clayton & Buddy TateBuck & Buddy Blow The Blues ... CD
Prestige/Swingville/OJC, 1961. Used ... $9.99
A romping little session from Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate – served up in a looser, more relaxed setting than the former's albums for Columbia, and a slightly more swing-based mode than the latter's dates for Chess! Both horn players get plenty of room to solo in the open-ended Swingville mode – Buck on trumpet and Buddy on both tenor and clarinet – and the group's a nice one too, since Sir Charles Thompson's playing piano, Gene Ramey's on bass, and Gus Johnson's on drums. Titles include "Blue Creek", "Blue Breeze", "Blue Ebony", "Rompin At Red Bank", and "Dallas Delight". CD

✨✧ Henry FranklinSkipper ... CD
Black Jazz, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest moments ever from west coast bassman Henry Franklin – a set of soaring, spiritual power – and a key demonstration of his rich energy as a leader! Franklin heads a wicked lineup here – playing both Fender and acoustic bass amidst other players who include Bill Henderson on electric piano, Charles Owens on tenor and soprano sax, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, Kenny Climax on guitar, and Michael Carvin on drums – all coming together with a mix of spiritual vibes and soulful undercurrents, in ways that almost give the record a Strata East sort of vibe! The whole thing is certainly one of the most memorable sessions on the Black Jazz label – and titles include "Outbreak", "Little Miss Laurie", "Theme For Jojo", and "Plastic Creek Stomp". CD
(1998 US pressing.)

Eddie HendersonBe Cool ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2018. Used ... $9.99
Cool is one thing that Eddie Henderson always is – as his sense of tone and timing just seem to get better and better as the years go on – and that's saying a lot, given that Eddie's legacy goes way back to the 70s! And although he did plenty of fusion and soul experiments in his youth, the later decades have always had Henderson moving into a role more as a classic stylist on the trumpet – one who seems to always set a new bar for his playing as time passes by – to a point where anyone would be daft not to call Eddie one of the more important voices on his instrument in the past 30 years. That sense of cool is definitely in place here, as is Henderson's subtle swing, even on the ballads – as Eddie works in a tight quintet with Donald Harrison on alto, Kenny Barron on piano, Essiet Essiet on bass, and Mike Clark on drums – on titles that include "Fran Dance", "Loft Funk", "Nightride", "The Sand Castle Head Hunter", "Naima", "Smoke Screen", "Bee Cool", and "Moontrane". ✨✧ Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, & OthersCalifornia Concert – The Hollywood Palladium (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI, 1971. Used 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautifully expanded version of this classic – two CDs, with previously unissued material appearing here for the first time ever! Although the genius of the CTI label might be often thought of in a studio format – especially since the Creed Taylor Influence on the label is what really turned the sound into something wonderful – this live set from 1971 shows that the label's players, with the right frame of mind, can easily get into the CTI groove in any setting – soaring out in a magical blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation, really stretching out on some killer long tracks! The group's a great all-star one – with organ and electric piano by Johnny Hammond, guitar by George Benson, flute by Hubert Laws, trumpet by Freddie Hubbard, tenor by Stanley Turrentine, and percussion by Airto – and all tracks are long, and very free-flowing. Titles include "Red Clay", "Sugar", "Blues West", "Leaving West", and "Fire & Rain". CD also features the never-issued tracks "Impressions", "So What", and "Straight Life" – all nice and long! CD
(Out of print. Remastered from the original analogue tapes!)

Roscoe MitchellDiscussions ... CD
Wide Hive, 2017. Used ... $5.99
The title's an apt one – as the music here is based on the improvisations from Roscoe Mitchell's earlier Conversations albums – but recast in a whole new way for an improvising orchestra! The group here features Mitchell on sopranino sax – a very strong voice out in the lead – but the larger ensemble really has a lot to add to the sound, in a lineup that includes flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, and oboe – reed elements used by Mitchell as in some of his previous "serious music" experiments – then mixed with violin, viola, electronics, trumpet, trombone, and percussion. The sound is a wonderful bridge between the compositional world of Mitchell and some of his looser small group improvisations – and the album satisfied both sides of that sonic spectrum in a great way. Titles include "Cascade", "Cracked Roses", "Who Dat", "Frenzy House", "Home Screen", and "I'll See You Out There". CD
(Digipack case has some light edgewear.)

✨✧ Hank MobleyNo Room For Squares (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1963. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
No room for squares with grooves this great – a classic Hank Mobley session from the mid 60s, and one that really shows the growth in his style at the time! The work's still strongly in a hardbop style, but modal elements are definitely creeping into the mix – a bolder sense of rhythm that really transforms the music from before – and lets Mobley reach out in a whole different way with his solos! The album features material from two different sessions – each of which have Mobley's tenor coming into play with other inventive artists on Blue Note at the time. One date features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Andrew Hill on piano, John Ore on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – and the other features Donald Byrd on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Butch Warren on bass, and Jones again on drums. Titles include "Up A Step", "Me N You", "Three Way Split", "Carolyn", and the classic "No Room For Squares". Plus, this reissue CD features 3 bonus cuts – "Old World New Imports", and alternate takes of "Carolyn" and "No Room For Squares". CD
(Still sealed.)

Buddy RichNo Funny Hats ... CD
Lobitos Creek, 1978. Used ... $6.99
A rare Buddy Rich set from 1978 – presented with his Killer Force band (possibly because it was made up of some of the few players who could stand up to his wrath!) The set was recorded live in Sacramento, and has a hard-driving approach that's similar to some of Rich's best work of the late 60s and early 70s – not funky, really, but nicely punched up with a hard-swinging groove that shows Buddy's key role in opening up the style of the larger group in the years before the funky jazz explosion of the 70s. Two of the album's best cuts – "Slo Funk" and "Tales Of Rhoda Rat" – were composed and arranged by the great Bob Mintzer. And other talents on the set include Steve Marcus, who plays most of the lead tenor bits – plus altoist Andy Fusco and trumpeter Chuck Schmidt. Titles include "Grand Concourse", "Someday My Prince Will Come", and the two above mentioned jammers! CD

Logan RichardsonShift ... CD
Blue Note, 2016. Used ... $6.99
The Blue Note debut of alto saxophonist Logan Richardson – an up-and-coming player you might know from a few previous records, or his work with Jason Moran, Gerald Clayton, or the Next Collective! This set may well surpass all those other projects, though – as Richardson's really emerging as a visionary in his own right – leading a creative quintet here that features strong piano and Fender Rhodes from Moran, guitars from Pat Metheny, and drums from Nasheet Waits – a lineup that might well intimidate a weaker player, but which really seems to set Richardson on fire! The presence of both Metheny and Moran is great – and gives the music this electric vibe that also retains an edge – one that makes for a nice counterpart to Logan's lines on alto, and which seems to underscore some of their darker qualities too. Production and performance are pretty straightforward, which is a further strength of the set – and titles are mostly originals – save for a version of Bruno Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven". Original tracks include "Time", "Alone", "Imagine", "Creeper", "Mind Free", and "In Your Next Life". CD
