✨✧ Tina BrooksTrue Blue (Spanish edition) ... CD
Blue Note/Time Life (Spain), 1960. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever for Blue Note – and the only album recorded by tenor player Tina Brooks that was issued during his lifetime! The album's nearly perfect – and features Brooks' edgey tenor set in an all star group that includes Duke Jordan on piano, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Brooks had blown on other Blue Note sessions before, but here, working as a leader, his sound is tremendous – vaguely to the left of center of some of his other tenor counterparts on the label, but with an equally impeccable approach to soul and rhythm. Titles include "Miss Hazel", "Good Old Soul", "Up Tight's Creek", and "Theme For Doris". CD
(Out of print.)

Buck Clayton & Buddy TateBuck & Buddy Blow The Blues ... CD
Prestige/Swingville/OJC, 1961. Used ... $11.99
A romping little session from Buck Clayton and Buddy Tate – served up in a looser, more relaxed setting than the former's albums for Columbia, and a slightly more swing-based mode than the latter's dates for Chess! Both horn players get plenty of room to solo in the open-ended Swingville mode – Buck on trumpet and Buddy on both tenor and clarinet – and the group's a nice one too, since Sir Charles Thompson's playing piano, Gene Ramey's on bass, and Gus Johnson's on drums. Titles include "Blue Creek", "Blue Breeze", "Blue Ebony", "Rompin At Red Bank", and "Dallas Delight". CD
(Out of print.)

✨✧ John ColtraneLush Life ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1957/1958. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Strong work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader – even if the album is sort of a collection of tracks that Trane recorded for Prestige, instead of a discreetly separate session! Side one features Coltrane's tenor in a spare setting with Earl May on bass and Art Taylor on drums – playing mellow tunes like "I Love You" and "Like Someone In Love", as well as the original "Trane's Slow Blues". Side two features a blowing session mode – with Donald Byrd, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Louis Hayes – on the cuts "Lush Life" and "I Hear A Rhapsody". CD

✨✧ Xavier CugatCugi's Cocktails ... CD
Mercury/Verve, 1963. Used ... Out Of Stock
Cugat and cocktails – what could be better? The set's a bit later than Xavier Cugat's classic vintage – but in a really nice way, one that has him opening up with some groovy 60s rhythms! The style is still heavily Latin, but there's also some nice influences from bossa nova and some of the dance trends that were creeping into the dancefloors of the time – and arranger Hal Mooney gives the whole thing a playful kind of approach that's still as rhythmic and percussive as Cugat's other albums, but which also uses the horn charts to carve some nice colors over the top! Titles include the excellent original "Cugi's Cocktail" – a great slow-groover with a soul jazz finish – plus "Manhattan", "Zombie", "Singapore", "Daiquiri", "Old Fashioned", and "Cuba Libre". (Latin, Jazz) CD
(Out of print, 2005 digipack pressing – in nice shape!)

✨✧ Grant GreenFinal Comedown - Original Soundtrack (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1972. Used ... $34.99
An excellent lost funky soundtrack on Blue Note – their only one for years, and Grant Green's entry into the blacksploitation genre! The whole thing bristles with the kind of chunky, thumping percussive feel as the best funky soundtracks of the era – informed by the work of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes, but with the deeper jazz feel that Green brings from his other Blue Note sides of the time! Some cuts are quite funky, particularly the opener, "Past, Present, and Future" with it's crisp trap, chicken scratch guitar and bongo driven beat. Others have more of a stripped-down dope instrumental feel – there's some sweet funky flute work on "Fathers Lament", and even a slight bossa groove creeps into the title track! The whole album's very nice, and it's very different than any of Grant Green's other work! Other titles include "Afro Party", Luana's Theme", "Slight Fear And Terror", and "Battle Scene". CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

✨✧ Quincy JonesWalking In Space ... CD
CTI/Rebound, 1969. Used ... $8.99
One of the greatest Quincy Jones albums of all time! The record's a spacey jazz masterpiece – and it combine's Quincy's soulful soundtrack vision with the excellent production talents of Creed Taylor, for a monster album of long drawn out cuts that mix soul jazz with more sophisticated arrangements! Bob James plays electric piano on a number of cuts, and in a way, the record's kind of a blueprint for some of James' later CTI albums. Titles include "Killer Joe", "Dead End", "Walking In Space", and "Love & Peace". CD
(Out of print.)

✨✧ Marvin Smitty SmithKeeper Of The Drums ... CD
Concord/Victor (Japan), 1987. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful record – one you might pass up easily, but not to be missed – as it's one of our straight jazz treasures of the 80s! The album's mostly straight ahead hardbop – recorded with a largeish group that includes Robin Eubanks on trombone, Steve Coleman on saxes, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Ralph Moore on tenor, and Wallce Roney on trumpet. The soulfulness of the players really makes the album sparkle – as all inventively blow around tightly scripted tunes laid down by Smith, driving with the fierceness of some of Art Blakey's best work towards the end of the 60s, recorded here with a lot more energy than the usual Concord session. Titles include "Just Have Fun", "Song Of Joy", "The Creeper", "A Simple Samba Song", and "Love Will Find A Way". CD
(Out of print, includes obi. Promotional stamp on CD.)
