Toshiko AkiyoshiFinesse ... LP
Concord, 1978. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A wonderfully intimate set from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – quite different than her bigger band records of the 70s, but equally great in its own way! The album's a great throwback to the earliest days of Akiyoshi on record – as it has the pianist really opening up in a trio setting, but with even more confidence and imagination than in the 50s and 60s – no Bud Powell burning here, but some really beautiful, lyrical passages that really leave us breathless – and almost bring into sharper focus some of the ideas she'd explored in her big band. Backing is by Monty Budwig on bass and Jake Hanna on drums – and titles include "Warning Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health", "American Ballad", "Solvejg's Song", "You Go To My Head", and "Count Your Blessings". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Terence Blanchard GroupChoices ... CD
Concord, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Core grooves from trumpeter Terence Blanchard and combo – but mixed with some compelling words from Cornel West and Bilal! The record's a jazz album at its core, but the presence of West and Bilal makes for a bit of a change, too – kind of an added level of consciousness on top of Blanchard's always-thoughtful music – but never in a way that's too heavy-handed. Other players include Walter Smith III on saxes, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Fabian Almazan on piano – and a number of tracks are straight instrumentals, without any vocals. Titles include "Journey", "Winding Roads", "Choices", "D's Choice", "Him Or Me", and "A New World". CD

Gary BurtonDeparture ... CD
Concord, 1997. Used ... $5.99
A laidback quintet date from Gary Burton – one that almost returns us to the warm hues of his best early work in the 60s! The record's awash in Burton's famous tone on the vibes – a very color-sensitive approach to the instrument that resonates nicely amidst a setting that includes piano from Fred Hersch, guitar from John Scofield, bass from John Patitucci, and drums from Peter Erskine. The tracks are all taken at a mellow or midtempo pace, and Burton's never too arch-modern in his approach – almost soulfully swinging at times, on tracks that include "Poinciana", "Depk", "Tenderly", "If I Were A Bell", "For All We Know", and "Japanese Waltz". Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, Herb EllisGreat Guitars Live (Live At The Winery/Live At Charlie's Georgetown) ... CD
Concord, 1980/1983. Used 2 CDs ... $5.99
A jazz guitar double-header – two older albums from the classic Great Guitars series packaged in a single set! First up is Great Guitars At The Winery – a date that has a sweet trio of guitarists – Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, and Herb Ellis – swinging in easygoing, open-ended formation that allows for plenty of fast string interplay! Rhythm is from Joe Byrd on bass and Jimmie Smith on drums, and at times, the guitar-driven approach is almost in the mode of gypsy swing – but with a lot more of a contemporary feel overall. Titles include "So Danco Samba", "Sheik Of Araby", "Broadway", "Air Mail Special", and "Talk Of The Town". Great Guitars At Charlies Georgetown follows the great format first set out by the trio of guitarists Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, and Herb Ellis – a pretty airy approach to jazz guitar swinging that also features a bit of bass from Joe Byrd and some drums from Chuck Redd! As before, the approach seems to work best on older swing-styled numbers – letting one guitar play rhythm while another solos strongly – on titles that include "Where Or When", "New Orleans", "Change Partners", "Opus One", "Get Happy", and "Danielle". ✨✧ Jeannie Cheatham & Jimmy CheathamSweet Baby Blues ... LP
Concord, 1984. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A sweetly stepping session of bluesy jazz vocals from Jeannie Cheatham – outwardly a trad-oriented record, but done here with some nice light west coast touches that really capture the best of the Concord groove of the early 80s. There's a gentle swing to the tracks that reminds us of some of the Ernestine Anderson Concord work from the period, and Jeannie plays a bit of piano as well as sings – and is joined by Jimmy on bass trombone, Red Callender on bass and tuba, and Charles McPherson on alto sax. Titles include "Brand New Blues Blues", "I Got A Mind To Ramble", "Cherry Red", "Roll Em Pete", and "Meet Me With Your Black Drawers On". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis and his Quartet doing their thing at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Fest – a previously unreleased set that finds Miles & Co in peak live form! The group isn't out to set the world on fire with this performance, but they're certainly pushing the form and structure of modern jazz in a way that must have been pretty exciting for a festival audience in '63. The group is George Coleman on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, with plenty sweet solos among them. Greatness! The Concord label gave guitarist Herb Ellis some of his greatest moments of the 70s – like this early cooker with guitarist Joe Pass – recorded live at the Concord Jazz Festival that gave the label its name! The 1973 performance has both players really opening up – never overwhelming each other, but driving with energy right from the start, then spacing out their own territory strongly on the solos. Backing is from bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jake Hanna – but the record leaves lots of room for guitar throughout – with tones and moments from both players that are a real surprise. ✨✧ Joe Henderson with Alice ColtraneElements (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Milestone/Concord, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Joe Henderson albums of the 70s – a suite of tracks dedicated to the four elements – and served up with some great accompaniment from Alice Coltrane! The style here is a wonderful mix of Coltrane's spirituality and Henderson's down-to-earth soulfulness – in a style that recalls some of the best moments on Coltrane's sublime Ptah The El Daoud album – a set in which Henderson's tenor was a key part. At times, Joe blows with a bit of Coltrane-like searching – but at others, he's bringing up more of a rhythmic pulse that really gives Alice a great focus – using her piano, harp, and harmonium alongside bass by Charlie Haden, violin from Michael White, and percussion from Ndugu Chancler and Baba Daru Oshu. Titles are named after the four elements – "Fire", "Air", "Water", and "Earth". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jazzmeia HornLove & Liberation ... CD
Concord, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We really loved Jazzmeia Horn on her debut, but this time around she really knocks it out of the park – to a point where we're ready to list her among our top few favorite jazz vocalists – a short list that includes Betty Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Shirley Horn! We're not easy with praise like that – but in this case, it's very well-deserved – as the record is one of those jazz vocal sets that comes along once in a blue moon – all original material by the singer, handled with a soulful, soaring style that's made even better by the small combo on the set – a great group that features Victor Gould on piano, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Josh Evans on trumpet, Jamison Ross on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Horn's got an ability to both deliver a straight lyric with just the right mix of soul and emotion, and take off on jazz-styled flights as well – and her sense of inflection is amazing – at once very old school, like few "jazz" singers can do these days – but also instantly personal and contemporary. Titles include "Free Your Mind", "Out The Window", "Only You", "When I Say", "Legs & Arms", "Reflections Of My Heart", and "I Thought About You". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk Orchestra At Town Hall ... CD
Riverside/Concord, 1959. Used ... $5.99
A unique large group effort from Thelonious Monk – but one that bristles with all the angular energy of his other great work for Riverside! The group here is a tentet – filled with excellent players who include Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Eddie Bert, Robert Northern, and Charlie Rouse – all supported by rhythm from the team of Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums, possibly one of the key factors for the success of the record! The album's comprised of Monk classics like "Little Rootie Tootie", "Thelonious", "Friday The 13th", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "Monk's Mood" – all arranged by Hall Overton, a little-remembered modernist from the 50s, but one with a keen dedication towards pushing new sounds from old formats! Overton really keeps the spirit of Monk's music intact here – penning charts that allow for plenty of solo space and the kind of cross-trading lines you'd hear in some of Monk's best multi-horn small group sides for Riverside! CD features 2 bonus tracks! CD

Poncho SanchezChile Con Soul ... CD
Concord, 1990. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant set of Latin jazz from Poncho Sanchez – proof that he was one of the few musicians who really kept the classic sounds going during the 80s! The album's got a tight small group format that benefits from some especially great horn work from Gene Burkert on alto and tenor, Sal Cracchilo on trumpet, and Art Velsasco on trombone – all players who are often arranged with a real sharpness on the heads – that modern edge that first started coming strongly into Latin jazz during the years of Eddie Palmieri's best work. Charlie Otwell's the pianist on the date, and he contributed some great tunes to the record – including "Song For Cal", "A Night In London", "Chile Con Soul", "Nueva Charanga", and "Quieto". Tito Puente plays some guest timbales – and other titles include "Soul Burst", "Mama Guela", "Con Migo", "Ti Pon Pa", and "Cold Sweat/Funky Broadway". (Latin, Jazz) CD

Concord, 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great little tribute to vibist Cal Tjader – handled by a percussion-heavy combo that really matches the vibe of Tjader's Latin classics from the 60s! The group features Poncho Sanchez on congas and additional percussion – but pianist David Torres is the musical leader of the set, and really has a great ear for the kind of spacious, well-timed rhythms that always made Cal's record's so great. Ruben Estrada handles vibes, and the set also features alto, tenor, and flute from Scott Martin, trombone from Alex Henderson, and trumpet from Stan Martin. Titles include "Soul Sauce (Guachi Guara)", "Tropicville", "Somewhere In The Night", "I Showed Them", "Song For Cal", "Tu Crees Que", "Leyte", "Liz-Anne", "Poinciana Cha Cha" and "Oran". Poncho SanchezTrane's Delight ... CD
Concord, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Poncho Sanchez is a genius – one of the leading lights of the west coast Latin scene at the end of the 70s, and a musician who's never failed to give us his best over the decades – so much so, that he may well be one of the few (along with Eddie Palmieri) who've continued to keep the jazz sound of their style growing strongly during the 21st Century! This album's an instant treasure – a nod to the greatness of John Coltrane, as you'd guess from the title – but a record that's really as distinct and powerful as Poncho's best from his older catalog – really creatively put together, with a focus not just on rhythms, but on really well-spun, well-conceived solos – modern on the edges, but swinging throughout – with work from a group that includes Francisco Torres on trombone, Ron Blake on trumpet, Robert Hardt on alto and tenor, and Andy Langham on piano. Torres handled the arrangements, and the album's got all the percussion you'd expect from a Sanchez album too – on titles that include "Soul Bourgeoisie", "Liberia", "Giant Steps", "Yam'mote", "Trane's Delight", "Todo Termino", "Sube", and "Blue Train". Maxine Sullivan With The Scott Hamilton QuintetUptown ... CD
Concord, 1985. Used ... $8.99
One of the greatest records we've ever heard from the legendary Maxine Sullivan – and a set that's got a bit more of a contemporary jazz vibe overall! The set's done with the group of tenorist Scott Hamilton – a great player to choose for a session like this, as he's one with a very classic sound in his horn, which further deepens the soul of the record – while also balancing it with the more contemporary generation in which Hamilton's spent most of his career. The recording style is relatively laidback and open – just small group swing, but with more mature, modern moments of expression – on titles that include "You Were Meant For Me", "I Thought About You", "Goody Goody", "By Myself", "I Got A Right To Sing The Blues", and "Just One Of Those Things". Cal TjaderCool Fire – A Fuego Vivo/Good Vibes ... CD
Concord, 1982/1984. Used 2CD ... $14.99
Two sweet very late Tjader albums on two cds – at a great price! A Fuego Vivo is a live septet set with the latin vibes master out front of Mark Levine on keys, the great percussionist Panco Sanchez on congas, and Gary Foster on alto and flute. It's a pretty atypically frenetic set for such a late date – with wonderfully tight, yet still quite jamming takes on "Serenita", "Ponco Con Dos Amigos", "Mindanao", "Tesoro", "Santo Domingo", "Naima" and "The Continental". Good Vibes is a very nice set of mellow west coast Latin vibes – sort of an updating of his classic 50s San Francisco groove on Fantasy. The host of California players includes Roger Glenn, Poncho Sanchez, and Gary Foster. The record features a remake of Cal's big hit from the 60s – "Guachi Guaro (Soul Sauce)" – plus the tracks "Doxy", "Cuban Fantasy", "Good Vibes", and "Shoshana". A really nice, lovingly assembled package of late Tjader – with vintage quality of material and attention to detail! CD

Prestige, 1955. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Even at this early point in their career, the Modern Jazz Quartet were plenty proud of their relation to and reception in Paris – almost rubbing their international fame in the faces of other American combos with the title and cover of this record! The set's still got the quartet at their crisp early best – before any of the sometimes too academic or too serious tones of later sides – and tracks are mostly shortish, ringing out with especially nice vibes from Milt Jackson. Titles include an early reading of the title cut "Concorde", plus an extended "Gershwin Medley", and the tracks "All Of You", "I'll Remember April", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Ralph's New Blues". ✨✧ Modern Jazz QuartetModern Jazz Quartet (Concorde/Django/MJQ) ... LP
Prestige, Early 50s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $8.99
A 2LP set that brings together most of the material from the first three full-length albums by the Modern Jazz Quartet – all recorded at a time when the combo were first forging their famous sound! Most of the sides here are in contrast to the group's better-known Atlantic work, because the group at this point still featured Kenny Clarke on drums – and although a few tracks here include Connie Kay, the bulk of the recordings are touched by Clarke's tighter, sometimes more aggressive work on percussion – making for a less-than-trademark sound that we really like. As usual, the rest of the group features Milt Jackson on vibes, John Lewis on piano, and Percy Heath on bass – and the 2LP set features 18 tracks that include "Concorde", "Vendome", "Milano", "La Ronde", "Django", "All The Things You Are", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "Delauney's Dilemma", "La Ronde Suite", "All Of You", and "Ralph's New Blues". ✨✧ Modern Jazz Quartet/Quartetto Di Milano/HungarianQuartet Is A Quartet Is A Quartet ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title's a bit misleading, because while the 3 groups on the session are all quartets, they're hardly similar in the associative way the record assumes! Side one features 4 tracks by the Modern Jazz Quartet – re-recordings of a few classics, plus one new one for the set – titles that include "Reunion Blues", "Winter Tale", "Concorde", and "Yesterdays". But side two actually features a string quartet – Quartetto Di Milano – playing the atonal "Funf Satze" by Anton Webern – plus the Hungarian Gypsy Quartet, doing a concert medley of traditional tunes in a violin-based way. So while the album may be some sort of attempt by the MJQ to further tie themselves to Europe – it's also kind of an unusual mix of jazz, avant classical, and folkloric styles! CD
