Killer work from the same sessions that gave the world Cannonball Adderley's classic Black Messiah album – live material from an extended stretch as the Troubadour club in LA – featuring a very righteous, freewheeling version of Cannonball's group! The lineup features some wonderful work on Fender Rhodes from George Duke – who brings a more soulful, spiritual current to the proceedings than Joe Zawinul did in earlier years – a really commanding presence that hints at his brewing solo fame, and which is a very welcome addition to the core lineup, which also includes Cannon on soprano and alto, and brother Nat on cornet! The performance also fetaures some great guest work from Ernie Watts on tenor and Airto on percussion – who really help round out the long tunes on the set. David Axelrod produced – leaving some nice room for Adderley's key spoken bits – and titles include the 12 minute groover "The Brakes", plus "Oh Babe", "Music You All", and "Capricorn" – plus a sweet take on "Walk Tall", which really has Duke stomping away on the Rhodes! Lyrical magic from pianist Ryo Fukui – a lost gem from the Japanese scene of the 70s, and a beautifully flowing album throughout! Fukui's got a wide-open touch to the piano that we totally love – and is easily one of the best of his contemporaries on the Japanese trio scene of the time – working in the open-ended mode that was allowed by labels in Tokyo during the 70s, a style that was never too far outside, but which really allowed the pianist to soar with a driving, rhythmic intensity. There's a bit of a modal groove to some of the tracks on the album, but more than that, there's just a beautiful sense of freedom – a love of sound and texture that's never reduced to mere experimentation, and which has Ryo taking full command of the keys to soar to the skies on waves of acoustic soul. The group on the set features Yoshinori Fukui on drums and Satoshi Denpo on bass – and tracks include "I Want To Talk About You", "Scenery", "Autumn Leaves", "Early Summer", and "It Could Happen To You". A really beautiful Japanese-only session from Benny Golson – and proof that, throughout the years, Golson could always continue to turn out wonderful material! Benny's working here with old bandmate Curtis Fuller on trombone – and the pair are supported by a trio who include Bill Mays on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums – all held wonderfully in command by Golson, who's working here with a tightness that recalls Jazztet years, yet which also has him and Fuller opening up in nice long solos. There's a sense of warmth here that crackles wonderfully – that raspy Golson tone that we first grew to love in the late 50s, and which has only deepened with age by this point. The set includes the wonderful original tune "One More Mem'ry", plus great versions of Golson's "Sad To Say", "Touch Me Lightly", "Five Spot After Dark", "Once Again", and "Out Of The Past". Four crucial albums from reed genius Evan Parker – brought together here in a limited, numbered set – with rare material on a bonus cassette, and a signed booklet of notes! First up is Saxophone Solos – completely unfettered solo saxophone work from Evan Parker – extremely intense, but not in an all-out blowing kind of way! Instead, Parker's got some incredible control on the valves here – playing with a frenetic sort of mode that's really incredible – freely improvising, but also really jamming too, with a dexterity that's simply amazing. That mix is what really set Parker apart from some of his contemporaries – a player who could be extremely sensitive at points, but also go head to head with some of the more fiercely-blown saxophonists of the European scene – and it's also a quality that's continued to make Parker so important as the decades move on. Titles include "Aerobatics 1", "Aerobatics 2", "Aerobatics 3", and "Aerobatics 4". Monoceros features Evan Parker, playing solo soprano sax – and recorded in a unique way that cuts his performance directly onto disc, which results in really stunning sound! The textures of Parker's music here are wonderful – bold notes mixed with more obscure sonic statements – all beautifully captured by the recording style, which features a solo microphone in the space of a room – so that the resonances of the reed lines are also reflected as they flow out into three dimensions. And unlike some other Parker material of this nature, the whole thing is very spontaneous and soulful – never too dry or academic, and much more with the vibrancy of Steve Lacy in a similar setting. Six Of One is another album of soprano sax – used exclusively by Evan Parker on the six improvised tracks on the set – each one very different than the other, and really showing the diversity and variation that Parker can bring to a performance! Often, the sound is very dense – tones and notes flowing effortlessly on top of one another – but clearly with this ear for sounds that often go beyond music, and a command of the instrument that rivals that of Steve Lacy in a similar setting – almost as if the record is Evan Parker's way of trying to claim a soprano saxophone title in the world of improvised music! The Snake Decides is an insanely wonderful piece of work from saxophonist Evan Parker – and maybe the record that will really have you deciding that Parker's a genius! The set is all solo soprano sax, recorded live in St Paul's church in Oxford – which creates this really rich sense of sound – but unlike other soprano solo records of this nature, the style is incredibly energetic and freewheeling – the sorts of long-spun, heavily blown lines you'd usually hear from a tenorist – and which really have us amazed at Parker's creativity, dexterity, and just all-out wind power too! The record might well be noteworthy for Evan's sense of breathing alone – as the music never seems to stop, as notes flow effortlessly from his fingertips – but there are sonic qualities that really send the album home, and which show why Parker was one of the greatest British improvising talents of the 80s. Titles include "The Snake Decides", "Buriden's Ass", "Haine's Last Tape", and "Leipzig Folly". A landmark pairing of two Chicago avant players at the start of the 80s – and one that shows that the city had plenty going on, even away from the AACM! The set brings together the older Hal Russell – still an underground secret in the city – and the younger Mars Williams, who was just starting out here, but would soon rise to fame in the NRG Ensemble, and on decades of other recordings and alliances in the Windy City. There's a mix of instrumentation that really shows the open-minded sense of improvisation that Russell helped encourage in the younger Generations – and Hal plays drums, C melody sax, cornet, vibes, toy horns, and "lots of other stuff" – with Mars Williams playing tenor sax, slide whistles, bells, newspapers, and "lots of other stuff" too!
