✨✧ Chester ThompsonPowerhouse ... CD
Black Jazz/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the few solo albums ever cut by organist Chester Thompson – a player who's known to most as the keyboardist in Tower Of Power, but one who's also remembered by a select funky few for this killer record for the Black Jazz label! The album's a stripped-down quartet session – with labelmate Rudolph Johnson on tenor, blowing some beautiful lines alongside long, drawn-out Hammond solos from Thompson! The overall feel is similar to some of the great late 60s Prestige sessions – especially Don Patterson dates – with the group free swinging away in a very live format, just like you might have heard if you caught them in some hip southside club. Other players include Al Hall Jr on trombone and Ray Pounds on drums – and the album features four long jamming tracks, with titles that include "Mr T", "Trip One", "Weird Harold", and "Powerhouse". ✨✧ Chester ThompsonMixology ... CD
Doodlin, 2012. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heavy Hammond from the mighty Chester Thompson – a smoking soul jazz set that's a real return to the sound of his Powerhouse album from the 70s! Thompson's jazz chops have only gotten better with age – and although he's certainly got a strong resume in funk and soul, we're really impressed at his dexterity on the organ here – working out these quick changes and long-spun lines that would be right at home on mid-60s Prestige Records! Yet most of the tunes are nice and tight, too – never too overindulgent, and a nice balance between groove and solo space as well . Thompson works here with Barry Finnerty on guitar, Joel Behrman on trumpet, and Howard Wiley on tenor – and Lonnie Smith guests on one track too! Titles include "Medallion", "Clockwise", "A Subtle One", "Sweet Sixteen", "Speak No Evil", "Sista Strut", "Mr T", and a nice version of "Moontrane". CD

✨✧ Freddie HubbardSplash ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1981. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Freddie Hubbard makes a sweet splash for the 80s in this great little set – one of his last electric outings before a return to more acoustic modes! The vibe's a bit leaner than some of his late 70s albums, with most of the electricity coming from the bass, and from the keyboards by Chester Thompson or Louis Small – but the record's definitely got that soaring sense of flow that Freddie brought to his best work of this nature – that new sound he unlocked during the 70s, which finally seemed to find the right voice for that mighty horn of his! Jeanne Tracy sings a bit of vocals on the set, bringing in a touch of soul to the album – and titles include the stepping classic "Touchdown" – plus "Splash", "Mystic Lady", "I'm Yours", "Jarri", "You're Gonna Lose Me", and "Sister Stine". ✨✧ VariousBest Of Black Jazz Records ... CD
Black Jazz/Universal Sound (UK), Early/Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
13 tracks pulled from one of the greatest soul jazz labels of the 70s – the boldly titled Black Jazz, a company who put out some tremendous music! Black Jazz was similar to Strata East and Tribe – 2 other great independents of the time – in that it really allowed the musicians a creative freedom that they didn't always get on bigger and more mainstream labels. The result was a sublime blend of righteous jazz tunes that were some of the most cutting edge jazz funk of the time – a wealth of great numbers that mixed light electric work with really solid jazz soloing, and which occasionally used vocals to serve up the message even more strongly! The set's all-great, all the way through – with classics that include "Coral Keys" by Walter Bishop Jr, "Higher Ground" by Doug Carn, "Powerhouse" by Chester Thompson, "Soul Village" by Walter Bishop Jr, "March On" by The Awakening, "Diswa" by Rudolph Johnson, "Maiden Voyage" by Kellee Patterson, "Slinky" by The Awakening, and "Eglise" by Roland Hanes. (Funky Compilations, Jazz) CD
(Includes the slipcase and large booklet!)

✨✧ Weather ReportBlack Market ... CD
Columbia, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A new chapter in the sound of Weather Report – but one that's still equally classic! Founding members Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul are joined here by Jaco Pastorius on bass, Chester Thompson on drums, and Alejandro Acuna on percussion – and Pastorius especially helps bring a lot of new colors and energy to the group! The style is still somewhere in the space of years past – somewhat cosmic at times, but also well-suited to leaner, flowing grooves that stretch out warmly – making great use especially of Zawinul's keyboards. Added players include Alphonso Johnson on bass and Don Alias on drums – and titles include "Black Market", "Cannon Ball", "Three Clowns", "Barbary Coast", "Herandnu", "Elegant People", and "Gibraltar".
