Brilliant later work from Ornette Coleman – quite adventurous stuff, too! By the late 80s, the shock of the new of Ornette's harmolodic sound had worn off enough that majors like CBS/Portrait were more than willing to invest in it – but for every catchy modern groove here, there's a left turn into more subtly daring territory! A few tracks feature Jerry Garcia – "3 Wishes", "Singing In The Shower", and "Desert Player" – and his jazz-folk-psych improv guitar style is a pretty wild match for Ornette and Prime Time. We didn't give those cuts nearly enough credit to over the years! The Garcia-less tracks show Ornette's awareness of hip hop and funky fusion, but he doesn't cop to trends. It's more that he's showing his continuing relevance in the 80s landscape. A good portion of the record features Gloria's husband, George Coleman joining in on tenor sax – creating a sound that's a bit like the Shirley Scott/Stanley Turrentine groove of many years back – but other numbers have Coleman on the Hammond, with guitar from either Calvin Keys or Eric Johnson, and drums from either George Coleman Jr or Deszon Claiborne. A hip west coast set from Ahmad Jamal – recorded up in British Columbia with a quintet lineup – all in a sound that's even more spacious and free-flowing than some of his Impulse albums from the same stretch! The group features the mighty Calvin Keys on guitar, plus John Heard on bass, Frank Gant on drums, and Seldon Newton on congas – and although Jamal only plays acoustic piano, there's a very open, soaring quality to the work that certainly shows his growing understanding of the Fender Rhodes, and how its approach might influence the sound of acoustic keys.
