Joki Freund QuintetEuropean Jazz Sounds ... CD
Brunswick/Be! (Germany), 1957. New Copy ... $9.99
Some of the earliest work we've ever heard from German tenorist Joki Freund – a player who'd trip out a bit more in later years, but who blows here with a sound that's sharp, modern, and very swinging throughout! The group features trombone from Albert Mangelsdorff, who's also on the straighter side of the spectrum here – plus alto from Emil Mangelsdorff, sounding a lot more modern than on other recordings – really matching the energy of both hornmen, as they all step out in a piano-less group that only features the bass of Harry Schell and drums of Rudi Sehring on rhythm! The music has echoes of better-known 50s modernists – like Lee Konitz or Jimmy Giuffre on our side of the Atlantic, or Hans Koller in Freund's German scene – and the package features live material from a 1957 album, plus additional studio tracks from the rare Joki's Sparkle EP. Titles include "Nico", "Freund Point", "Vie La France", "Swinging Pigeons", "Domicile", "Rudy's Theme", and "From Lighthouse To Frankfurt". CD

✨✧ Terry Gibbs/Milt BucknerJazz On The Air (10 inch LP) ... LP
Brunswick, 1953. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Rare Brunswick work from Terry Gibbs – a groovy 10" LP, split with the group of Milt Buckner! Side one and part of side two feature Terry leading a very cool group – a combo with Gibbs on vibes, plus piano, bass, and drums – and a young Don Elliott on mellophone, making a key appearance here, and giving the record a nicely swinging sound! Gibbs' vibes have that warmly chromatic sound we love so much from this time – and titles include "Out Of Nowhere", "What's New", "Now Is The Time", and "Bernie's Tune". The remaining tracks feature the trio of Milt Buckner – with Milt on organ, Bernie Mackey on guitar, and Cornelius Thomas on drums. The straight trio plays on "Russian Lullaby" – and Gibbs joins them on "Trapped". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is in nice shape!)

MoondogMoondog (Columbia) ... LP
Columbia, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.98
This was the first of Moondog's albums on Columbia – produced in a style that took him a lot more seriously than other albums on labels like Brunswick or Prestige, and handled in a way that slots it nicely between the label's experiments in modern music with artists like Terry Riley or Harry Partch. The tracks still have all the naive charm of Moondog's earlier work, but they're performed by a top-shelf orchestra that includes classical and jazz players, including Ron Carter, Hubert Laws, Buddy Morrow, and Phil Bodner. Moondog himself handles the bass – and tracks include "Mini-sym #1", "Stamping Ground", "Symphonique #6", and "Witch Of Endor". (Out Sound, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michael NauraEuropean Jazz Sounds – Unreleased Live Recordings & Rare Radio Sessions ... CD
Be! (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant work from pianist Michael Naura – one of our favorite players on the German scene at the start of the 60s – and one of the few who was really picking up the best sorts of soulful currents from the American scene! Most of the work here features Naura's excellent combo with Wolfgang Schluter on vibes and Klaus Marmulla on alto sax – both equally-great players who work with Michael's piano in a vibe that maybe rivals some of our favorite Prestige Records material of the period, but also has some slight European modern currents too – always at a level that keeps things soulful and swinging, but with a vibe that's pretty darn fresh! 2CD package features well-recorded, non-LP material by the group – a great complement to their famous debut record on Brunswick – and titles include "Blues Walls", "Rainy Clouds", "Nightlife", "A Party With John", "Micha's Dilemma", "Blues For Werner", "Night At Tony's", "Mike's Blues", and "Minority".
