Milt Jackson & Ray CharlesSoul Brothers ... LP
Atlantic, 1957. Near Mint- ... $24.99 28.99
Not a vocal session from Ray Charles, but instead a set that showcases his great abilities in jazz – a side of Charles' talents that Atlantic was focusing on a bit more at the end of the 50s! The record's a collaboration with vibist Milt Jackson, who's nicely more loose and gritty here than in the company of the Modern Jazz Quartet – and in addition to piano, Ray also plays a bit of alto sax too – which comes as a nice surprise! Other players include the great Billy Mitchell on tenor sax, Skeeter Best on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Connie Kay on drums – and titles include "Blue Funk", "Cosmic Ray", "Soul Brothers", and "How Long Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo green & blue label pressing. Cover has a touch of minimal wear, and is great overall!)

✨✧ Heath BrothersHeath Brothers – Paris 76 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sam Records (France), 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A never-issued live performance by the legendary Heath Brothers – and a set that's got the same freewheeling spiritual jazz vibe as their classic album on Strata East! The group's a quartet here, with excellent piano work from Stanley Cowell – who also plays mbira, and might also account for the more open, spacious, spiritual quality of the record – although the Heath Brothers clearly bring a lot to the table too! Jimmy Heath is superb on tenor, soprano, and flute – blowing soulful solos that are as great as on his own 70s albums as a leader – and Albert Tootie Heath mixes in some flute work next to his drums and percussion. Percy plays a bit of baby bass next to his fuller, rounder acoustic – and titles include a great long reading of their classic "Smilin Billy" – plus "One For Juan" and "Watergate Blues". ✨✧ Brothers Candoli (Pete & Conte Candoli)2 For The Money ... LP
Mercury, 1959. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the harder to find 50s sessions from LA jazz brothers Pete & Conte Candoli – a twin-trumpet album with rhythm from Jimmy Rowles on piano, Howard Roberts on guitar, Max Bennett on bass, and Frank Capp on drums! The tracks are a clean extension of mid 50s LA cool jazz – blown with a bit more edge, and perhaps a looser feel than some of the brothers' earlier work – and nicely swinging overall. Titles include "Splanky", "Riffs For Rosie", "Doodlin", "Blueing Boogie", and "Richard Diamond's Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light wear, but looks nice overall.)

✨✧ David Murray with Saul WillamsBlues For Memo ... CD
Motema, 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
David Murray finds a fantastic new outlet for his many talents here – working with the younger songwriter Saul Williams – who delivers some fantastic lyrics throughout! Saul's as much a spoken word artist as he is a singer – and his passages on the album have this righteous power that takes us back to the hippest sort of music like this from the 70s – but also filtered through some of the lyrical possibilities of the better side of the hip hop generations, especially in the way the power of his messages come across! Murray is fantastic, too – really soulful and swinging, both on tenor and clarinet – and the songs often have Williams or Murray soloing first, then the other taking over. The rest of the group is pretty great as well – with Orrin Evans on piano, Craig Harris on trombone, Jaribu Shahid on bass, Nasheet Waits on drums, and a bit of Fender Rhodes from Jason Moran. Almost all tracks are originals – with titles that include "A Mirror Of Youth", "Kush", "Forever Brothers", "Music Of The Mind", "Deep In Me", "Positive Messages", "Obe", and "Citizens" – and the album also features a version of the Sun Ra tune "Enlightenment". CD
(Digipak has light wear.)

✨✧ VariousMizell Brothers At Blue Note Records – 1973 to 1977 & Beyond ... CD
Blue Note, Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Genius work from one of the most soulful production teams ever – brothers Larry and Fonce Mizell, a pair who really helped transform the sound of funky jazz in the 70s! The Mizell touch is a tricky thing to sum up adequately – a sublime blend of keyboards, splashy rhythms, vocal choirs, and fuller backings – all set in a way that still allows plenty of space for a main jazz soloist to do their thing. And even if you don't know the brothers' work by itself, we can bet you've heard its influence in a range of modern hip hop, electronica, and dance music over the past few years – because the Mizell influence is still burning strong, many long decades after their initial work in the studio. This excellent collection really goes out of its way to bring together some of the best Mizell-produced tracks for Blue Note and Capitol from the mid 70s – in a way that sits classics alongside some lesser-remembered numbers, and which nicely excludes a few tracks that have already been over-compiled in recent years. Titles include "Wind Parade", "Dominoes", "Change", and "Design A Nation" by Donald Byrd, "Reason To Survive" by Rance Allen, "Uno Esta" and "Black & Blues" by Bobbi Humphrey, "Funked Up" by Gary Bartz, "N R Time" by Mizellstory, and "Think Twice (Mizell Brothers 2005 rmx)" by Donald Byrd. (Funky Compilations, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Fabrizio Bosso & Gianni BassoFive Brothers – Remembering Chet & Jeru Chapter 1 ... CD
Philology (Italy), 2005. Used ... Out Of Stock
Way more than just the west coast tribute album you might expect from the title – as the lead horn players bring plenty of their own depth to the music! The album's a bit more composed than some other efforts we've heard from trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso and tenorist Gianni Basso – but it also still opens up strongly with their own well-voiced tones on their respective instruments – buoyed along with tight rhythms from a trio that features pianist Andrea Pozza, bassist Luciano Milanese, and drummer Stefano Bagnoli. Bosso plays a bit of flugelhorn on the set, and titles on this first volume include "Five Brothers", "Bernie's Tune", "Blues For Gerry", "A Ballad", "Frenesi", and "Broadway". CD

✨✧ Wes MontgomeryGroove Brothers ... LP
Fantasy, Late 50s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A 70s set that brings together some nice sides from Wes and his brothers. Side one is taken from the Montgomery Brothers set, the first session to feature the group with Wes on the west coast – caught in the studio at a time when Buddy and Monk had left The Mastersounds, and recorded here with a sound that's quite similar to that group – but with a bit of a harder edge, thanks to the guitar. Side two continues in the same vein, capturing the group on a live set in Vancouver, grooving in a similar style that's a bit like some of Wes' early small group albums from the same time. The final two sides are pulled from the Groove Yard LP, another lively set that has a lot more swing than usual, and which grooves nicely on just about every cut. The drummers on the sides are Lawrence Marable, Paul Humphries and Bobby Thomas, all fitting nicely into the pocket with the Montgomerys. 15 tracks in all, including "Jeanine", "Green Dolphin Street", "Beaux Arts", "Snowfall", "Lover Man", "June In January", "Monterey Blues", "Delirium", "Back To Back", "Doujie", "Just For Now", and "Groove Yard" LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic/Collectables, Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
2CDs worth of classic work by Milt Jackson! CD one features 14 tracks from Milt's Atlantic years – recorded with players that include Kenny Burrell, Connie Kay, John Lewis, Frank Wess, and John Coltrane, lifted from a number of different records, and including the titles "Bag's New Groove", "Plenty Plenty Soul", "Cylinder", "Sandra's Blues", and "Ghana". CD two features the album Soul Brothers – featuring Milt in the company of Ray Charles, who gives the set much more of a soulful feel than some of Milt's other records. Titles on that set include "Blue Funk", "Cosmic Ray", "Soul Brothers", and "How Long Blues". CD

Gerry MulliganGerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band – Live At The Olympia, Paris 1960 ... CD
Gambit (Spain), Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
2 great Paris live sets from Gerry Mulligan – with his Concert Jazz Band at L'Olympia in 1960 – followed by a 1962 quartet set at the same venue serving as bonus tracks! The 11 titles on the first CD and the first titles on the second CD are culled from the 1960 set – a tight affair with great solo work from a larger group of players – which includes Don Ferrara and Conte Candoli on trumpet, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Willie Dennis and Alan Raph on trombone, Bob Donovan and Gene Quill on alto, Jim Reider and Zoot Sims on tenor, Buddy Clark on bass and Mel Lewis on drums. A real triumph! Titles include "You Took Advantage Of Me", "Black Nightgown", "Body And Soul", "Barbara's Theme", "Apple Core", "Out Of This World", "Go Home", "I'm Gonna Go Fishing", "Blueport" and more! The second CD is closed out by a 1962 set by the the Gerry Mulligan Quartet – originally released as the LP Gerry Mulligan & His Quartet Live At The Olympia Theatre 1962! The tracks are long, and the setting fluid – as Gerry plays baritone on most tracks, but piano on a couple; and Bob Brookmeyer does the same, taking a break from valve trombone to play piano for one track as well. Rhythm is by the team of Bill Crow on bass and Gus Johnson on drums – and titles include "Spring Is Sprung", "Five Brothers", "Subterranean Blues", "Blue Port", and "Utter Chaos". More than 2 1/2 hours of music on 2CDs! CD

✨✧ Bud ShankBud Shank & The Sax Section ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1966. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great showcase for the amazing reed talents of Bud Shank – great in a small combo during the early years of his career, and equally at home in larger groups like this during the 60s! As you'd guess from the title, Bud heads up a fuller section of saxophonists – players who include Bill Perkins, Bob Cooper, and Jack Nimitz – working with Bud in a style that's a more modern extension of modes first explored by the Four Brothers/Herman group in the late 40s – but with much groovier 60s styles here! Bob Florence handles the arrangements, and he brings a great sense of color and tone – and a nice ear for a groove – on titles that include "Take Five", "The Sidewinder", "Summer Samba", "On A Clear Day", "Summertime", "Reza", and "Senor Blues". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove. Cover has surface wear and yellowing from age.)

✨✧ VariousHip Holland Hip – Modern Jazz In The Netherlands 1950 to 1970 ... CD
Sdban (Netherlands), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the Dutch jazz scene in the 50s and 60s – a spot in Europe that was turning out some really fantastic modern material – at a level that's every bit as great as better-known work coming from France, Germany, and Scandinavia at the time! Many of the players here quickly became giants who would dominate on the Dutch scene for years to come – and even at this early point, their work is wonderful – occasionally graced with guest work from American players, but already more than great enough on its own – and filled with a mix of sharp rhythms, new ideas, and impeccable instrumentation throughout. As with other Sdban titles, the presentation is wonderful – not just a great set list, but an overall feel that makes the package as hefty as the music inside. Titles include "Four On Six" by Kwartet Martin Verlinden, "So Why" by Kwartet Leo Meyer, "Amsterdam Blues" by Diamond Five, "Lady Elisabeth" by Tony Vos Quartet, "Blues For Eddy" by Red & Brown Brothers, "Sem" by Frans Elsen, "Relaxin With Rhythme" by The Rhythme All Stars, "Mensen Van Morgen" by Herman Schoonderwalt, "Wives & Lovers" by Rita Reys & Oliver Nelson, "Comin Home Baby" by Trio Tony Vos, "Sing Sing Sing" by Leddy Wessel with Jack Van Poll, "Blues Minor" by Boys Big Band, and "Afro Blues" by Herbie Mann with Wessel Ilcken Combo. ✨✧ Albert HeathKwanza (The First) (with bonus track) ... CD
Muse/Xanadu, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest, hippest albums you'll ever hear from drummer Albert Tootie Heath – a set that's so different than his earlier work of the 60s, and which has the same sort of righteous, spiritual energy as the Heath Brothers album on Strata East! Albert's got a wonderfully loose vibe on the drums – and the added percussoin he brings into the mix – and the group here features slight electric currents from Kenny Barron on Fender Rhodes and Ted Dunbar on guitar – plus sublime reed lines from brother Jimmy Heath – who really blows it away on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – again like his best Strata East performance! Brother Percy Heath is on bass – which seems to be electric at points – and Curtis Fuller rounds out the group with some of that hipper, more searching trombone style he was using at the time – and the whole thing's wonderful, much more progressive than some of the other Xanadu Records sessions of the period. Titles include "Dunia", "Sub-Set", "Tafadhali", "Oops", and "A Notion". Features the bonus track "Wazuri Blues" – a piano solo by Kenny Barron. CD
