VariousDown Beat Jazz Concert ... LP
Dot, 1958. Very Good+ ... $3.99
An assortment of tracks recorded together under the Downbeat name, but which was really designed to showcase the budding jazz talents on late 50s Dot Records! The set kicks off with a big band, Basie-ish number – "Blues Over Easy", performed by Manny Alban and jazz greats that include Nick Travis, Gene Quill, and Jerome Richardson. Next up is the Tony Scott quintet with Jimmy Knepper – on a version of "Scrapple From The Apple" – followed by 2 tracks by Steve Allen – one trio, one with a quartet with Georgie Auld – "Rose Room" and "The Fast Thing In C". Paul Horn follows up with "Give Me The Simple Life" – and the set's completed by "Dougy's Buggy" performed by the Don Elliott Quintet, with Elliott on trumpet and vibes, plus bass clarinet by Hal McKusick. LP, Vinyl record album
(Black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a half split top seam.)

✨✧ Buddy RichBig Swing Face ... LP
Pacific Jazz, Late 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although Buddy's always been a bit laughable, he was always trying to keep his bag moving, and his band of the late 60s included some pretty darn nice players. The group on this session includes Ernie Watts and Bobby Shew, and the band wails hard and fast in a live setting with lots of tight little numbers. Tracks include "Wack Wack", "Norwegian Wood", "The Beat Goes On", and "Mexicali Nose". LP, Vinyl record album

George RussellNew York, New York ... LP
Decca, 1958. Very Good+ ... $24.99
A wonderful album from George Russell – and a refreshing change from his overly-academic modernist work! The session's an unusual one – a musical portrait of New York City, performed with an all-star cast that includes John Coltrane, Art Farmer, Bill Evans, Phil Woods, Benny Golson, Max Roach, and Hal McKusick – all working together to paint tones on the tunes that George has crafted to set up his scene of New York in the 50s. Most importantly, though, Jon Hendricks acts as the narrator of the album – talking and scatting in hipster mode, laying out a bit of beat rapportage about the Big Apple, all done in a very cool 50s style that's a bit different from his own vocal work. Titles include "Manhattan", "Big City Blues", "Manhattan-Rico", and "A Helluva Town". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo maroon label pressing, with deep groove. Cover has a promo sticker, a price sticker remnant, and light wear.)

✨✧ VariousJazz Room – Compiled By Paul Murphy ... LP
BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really great collection of jazzy groovers – one that effortlessly combines older material and newer recordings, all with a great ear that never tires in its pursuit of the groove! The blend of old and new is a bit like some of the collections we used to love from Gilles Peterson back in the last century – but Paul Murphy definitely has his own style and way of choosing a tune, and like Peterson, he has a great way of setting a new sort of fire with jazz – one that will burn strongly for generations to come! Titles include "Yatra-Ta" by Terje Terasmaa, "African Mailman" by Rhythmagic Orchestra, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Blue Mode, "Foot In The Door" by Onward International, "Zombie" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Emnete (live)" by Imperial Tiger Orchestra, "4 Beat Cha Cha Cha" by Lucas Van Merwijk & His Cubop City Big Band, "Tribute To Mulatu" by Patchworks, "Koumba Fri Fri" by Mamelon, "Sorrow Tears & Blood" by Shola Adisa Farrar & Florian Pellissier Quartet, and "Mambo De La Pinta" by Art Pepper. ✨✧ Zbigniew NamyslowskiKujaviak Goes Funky ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Some great funky jazz by one of Poland's greatest musicians! Zbigniew Namyslowski cut his teeth playing modernist alto sax in the group of Krzystof Komeda, but on this mid 70s set, he's grooving hard in a tight set of choppy fusion tracks with that hard European approach on the downbeat! The group's a quintet – with Namyslowski on alto, Tomasz Szukalski on tenor and soprano, and Wojcieh Karolak on electric piano – and the tracks are long and spiralling, a bit free, but always with some good grooves, and held down especially nicely by Karolak's keyboard lines! Titles include "Zablakana Owieczka", "Kujaviak Goes Funky", "Appenzeller's Dance", and "Smutny Jasio". LP, Vinyl record album

Dave BrubeckJazz Impressions Of New York ... LP
Columbia, 1964. Near Mint- ... $19.99
New York's a mighty big place, but it's got a nicely intimate feel in this 60s set from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – one of the combo's overlooked gems from their years on Columbia! The music is all from the TV show Mr Broadway, but there's hardly a showtune feel to the set – and instead, the groove is almost in a hip Henry Mancini sort of mode, but delivered with a smaller combo feel. Tracks are somewhat shorter than the usual Brubeck outing, and balanced nicely between upbeat tracks and more sensitive ones – the former with some well-cut lines by Paul Desmond on alto sax, the latter often with a bit more piano from Dave. The rest of the group includes Gene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums – and titles include "Mr Broadway", "Broadway Bossa Nova", "Sixth Sense", "Something To Sing About", "Spring In Central Park", "Lonely Mr Broadway", "Winter Ballad", "Upstage Rhumba", and "Summer On The Sound". ✨✧ David YoungDavid Young ... LP
Mainstream, Early 70s. Very Good Gatefold ... $6.99
David Young may not be the biggest name in the jazz history books, but we'll always remember him fondly for this great little album on Mainstream – a set that's maybe one of the more spiritual session on the label in the early 70s! Young plays tenor, and he's got a group that's all-hip, all the way through – with Virgil Jones on trumpet, Sonny Fortune on baritone and flute, Harold Mabern on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Idris Muhammad on drums! There's definitely currents here that echo some of the work that Fortune and Mabern would soon do on Strata East – as the tunes have an offbeat, soulful vibe – partly lyrical, partly swinging – but also with lots of Young's own voice in the mix, too. The Mainstream Records production brings out some of the warmer currents in the music – and titles include "Pisces On The Cusp", "For You With Love", "Down Yonder", "Joe Splivingates", "Friday The Fourteenth" and "Animated Suspension". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has an uglued bottom seam and a Roulette sticker.)

Chris ConnorMisty ... LP
Atlantic (Japan), Late 50s. Very Good ... $9.99
An unusual set from the legendary vocalist Chris Connor – a record that's graced with a boozy later image of Chris on the front, but which features a host of rare gems from her late 50s years at Atlantic Records! There's some really wonderful work on the record that easily matches, if not beats Chris Connor gems on some of her bigger albums of the time – especially since some of the cuts show Connor trying out some new modes, and new ideas – elements that go past her usual vocal jazz styles, with some cool inflections that really open things up. Highlights include great versions of "Senor Blues", "Moon Ride", "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman", and "Invitation" – plus "Long Hot Summer", "Fortune Cookies", "Circus", and "Flying Home". Johnny DankworthBundle From Britain ... LP
Top Rank, 1959. Near Mint- ... $7.99
The first American performance of UK leader John Dankworth – recorded live at Newport in 1959, with very pleasing results! Dankworth's group was one of the most upbeat, swinging, and hard-driving in England at the time – and they come off here with just the sort of sound that must have gotten them some great acclaim with American audiences. The lineup is quite big, and players include Kenny Wheeler and Bob Carson on trumpet, Tony Russell and Garry Brown on trombone, Johnny Dankworth on alto and clarinet, Danny Moss on tenor, Alex Leslie on baritone, and Dickie Hawdon on trumpet and tenor horn. The live setting seems to open up the group even more than on some of their UK recordings from the period – allowing for longer tracks that have nice room for solo work. Titles include "Firth Of Fourths", "Caribe", "Royal Ascot", "Doggin Around", and "Jones". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove.)

Alessandro MagnaniniSomeway Still I Do (colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Titles include "Livin My Life", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Stay Into My Life", "But Not For You", "Greetings From Here", "Something Fine", "Suddenly", "Blind Date Blues", and "So Long Goodbye". Myele ManzanzaLove Requited ... LP
First Word (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
Beautifully dynamic work from drummer Myele Manzanza – an artist we've never heard work in this scope before, and we hope will soon do so again! The album's got Myele at the helm of a great large ensemble – a group who have a strong spiritual sense at the core, but often move in more vibrant rhythms driven by Manzana's work on the drums – not really funky, maybe more in an upbeat modal mode – which allows for great sounds from the rising crest of alto, trumpet, tenor, trombone, and flute in the lineup! Bass is by Ross McHenry, whose sound is a key core part of the record – and Ross also produced, as well – really capturing the right sort of vibe for the entire album. Myele's part of the Adelaide scene, in New Zealand – but we'd put this record right up there with some of the best work coming out of the London jazz world in recent years – with titles that include "Big Deal", "Madrid", "Itaru's Phone Booth", "Family Dynamics", "Ritual", and "A Love Requited". Sun Ra & John CageJohn Cage Meets Sun Ra – The Complete Concert (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Meltdown/Modern Harmonic, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 36.98
A legendary meeting of talents from two different sides of the underground – avant composer John Cage and jazz visionary Sun Ra – both performing together at a special one-night event that took place at Coney Island in 1987! The set doesn't really feature Ra jamming with Cage (as if anyone could "jam" with John Cage!) – and instead, both players were on the stage at the same time, but would each step aside to let the other do their thing – Cage would vocalize in these amazing passages that are right up there with the most beautiful vocal work he ever did, alongside some "silent" performances too – and Ra would play keyboard solos that have a beautifully offbeat electric vibe! The pair do come together at one point – but mostly in a "silent" duet, although one title does feature Cage's weird vocals with Ra's keyboard. And big bonus – this package also presents the full complete concert – with material that appears here for the first time ever – including a beautiful vocals from June Tyson over Ra's keyboards on "Enlightenment", other Ra numbers that include "This Is The Space Age", "The Living Parable", "The Damned Air", and "We Hold This Myth To Be Potential". ✨✧ Les DeMerleSpectrum ... LP
United Artists, 1970. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the few albums ever cut by Les DeMerle, one of the hippest drummers of his time – made legendary thanks to legions of samplers and beatheads in the 90s! The album is one of Les' best records – a tight batch of funky big band tracks, with lots of nice grooves, and a very hip lineup that includes Frank Foster, Joe Beck, Chris Woods, Arnie Lawrence, and Charles Sullivan – all coming together in some great tunes that have very unusual rhythms, and a great format that puts the drums in line with the hip playing in the reed section! The album includes Les' famous version of "A Day in the Life", which begins with a monster funky intro – plus the cuts "Fusion – Pro & Con", "Underground", "Deflections 1, 2, 3, & 4", and "Aquarius". ✨✧ Hozan Yamamoto & Sharps & FlatsBeautiful Bamboo Flute ... LP
Victor/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi".
