✨✧ VariousJazz Room – Compiled By Paul Murphy ... LP
BBE (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A really great collection of jazzy groovers – one that effortlessly combines older material and newer recordings, all with a great ear that never tires in its pursuit of the groove! The blend of old and new is a bit like some of the collections we used to love from Gilles Peterson back in the last century – but Paul Murphy definitely has his own style and way of choosing a tune, and like Peterson, he has a great way of setting a new sort of fire with jazz – one that will burn strongly for generations to come! Titles include "Yatra-Ta" by Terje Terasmaa, "African Mailman" by Rhythmagic Orchestra, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Blue Mode, "Foot In The Door" by Onward International, "Zombie" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Emnete (live)" by Imperial Tiger Orchestra, "4 Beat Cha Cha Cha" by Lucas Van Merwijk & His Cubop City Big Band, "Tribute To Mulatu" by Patchworks, "Koumba Fri Fri" by Mamelon, "Sorrow Tears & Blood" by Shola Adisa Farrar & Florian Pellissier Quartet, and "Mambo De La Pinta" by Art Pepper. Chris ConnorMisty ... LP
Atlantic (Japan), Late 50s. Very Good ... $6.99
An unusual set from the legendary vocalist Chris Connor – a record that's graced with a boozy later image of Chris on the front, but which features a host of rare gems from her late 50s years at Atlantic Records! There's some really wonderful work on the record that easily matches, if not beats Chris Connor gems on some of her bigger albums of the time – especially since some of the cuts show Connor trying out some new modes, and new ideas – elements that go past her usual vocal jazz styles, with some cool inflections that really open things up. Highlights include great versions of "Senor Blues", "Moon Ride", "I Sold My Heart To The Junkman", and "Invitation" – plus "Long Hot Summer", "Fortune Cookies", "Circus", and "Flying Home". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese-only pressing.)

Johnny DankworthBundle From Britain ... LP
Top Rank, 1959. Near Mint- ... $5.99
The first American performance of UK leader John Dankworth – recorded live at Newport in 1959, with very pleasing results! Dankworth's group was one of the most upbeat, swinging, and hard-driving in England at the time – and they come off here with just the sort of sound that must have gotten them some great acclaim with American audiences. The lineup is quite big, and players include Kenny Wheeler and Bob Carson on trumpet, Tony Russell and Garry Brown on trombone, Johnny Dankworth on alto and clarinet, Danny Moss on tenor, Alex Leslie on baritone, and Dickie Hawdon on trumpet and tenor horn. The live setting seems to open up the group even more than on some of their UK recordings from the period – allowing for longer tracks that have nice room for solo work. Titles include "Firth Of Fourths", "Caribe", "Royal Ascot", "Doggin Around", and "Jones". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Clare FischerFirst Time Out ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing debut from pianist Clare Fischer – an artist who went onto have a subtle, but immediate influence upon both the American and Brazilian jazz scenes of the time! Fischer's got a lyrical approach to rhythm that's simply amazing – modern, but never cold and academic – and instead always freely dancing around, in a way that gives equal melodic roles to the bass and drums in his trio. There's a clear bossa nova inspiration here, but keep in mind that Fischer's sensibility was also a big influence on the bossa players of the time. The whole session sparkles with a fresh genius that still beats the work of most players still recording today – and Fischer's piano is accompanied by equally free-thinking work on bass by Gary Peacock and drums by Gene Stone. Most titles are originals, and tunes include "Toddler", "Stranger", "Nigerian Walk", "Afterfact", "Free Too Long", "Piece For Scotty", and "Blues For Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing, with obi! Cover has some light aging, but is nice overall.)

Al Lirvat & Robert Mavouzny QuintetBlowin At The Cigale ... LP
Numera (France), Late 60s. Very Good+ ... $36.99
A very cool record from saxophonist Robert Mavouzny and trombonist Al Lirvat – the latter of whom also cut some biguine albums on the French scene of the 70s! This set's maybe a bit straighter jazz, but you can definitely hear some unusual touches at play – as the group opens up with help from Xavier Chambon on trumpet, Wolf Schubert on piano, Jack Sewing on bass, and Michael Silva on piano. A few moments are more swing, but others are more offbeat – a very unusual session! LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some light wear, and one bumped corner.)

Alessandro MagnaniniSomeway Still I Do (colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Titles include "Livin My Life", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Stay Into My Life", "But Not For You", "Greetings From Here", "Something Fine", "Suddenly", "Blind Date Blues", and "So Long Goodbye". (New Grooves, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition double colored vinyl pressing with bonus tracks!)

✨✧ Myele ManzanzaLove Requited ... LP
First Word (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully dynamic work from drummer Myele Manzanza – an artist we've never heard work in this scope before, and we hope will soon do so again! The album's got Myele at the helm of a great large ensemble – a group who have a strong spiritual sense at the core, but often move in more vibrant rhythms driven by Manzana's work on the drums – not really funky, maybe more in an upbeat modal mode – which allows for great sounds from the rising crest of alto, trumpet, tenor, trombone, and flute in the lineup! Bass is by Ross McHenry, whose sound is a key core part of the record – and Ross also produced, as well – really capturing the right sort of vibe for the entire album. Myele's part of the Adelaide scene, in New Zealand – but we'd put this record right up there with some of the best work coming out of the London jazz world in recent years – with titles that include "Big Deal", "Madrid", "Itaru's Phone Booth", "Family Dynamics", "Ritual", and "A Love Requited". Thelonious MonkMonk's Blues ... LP
Columbia, 1968. Very Good+ ... $12.99
Thelonious Monk meets the mighty Oliver Nelson – the hip bigger band arranger who was helping so many other artists find their groove back in the 60s! The result is less Nelson-led than some of Oliver's other albums of the time – and instead, the arranger is nicely respectful of Monk's core sound – and still manages to led Thelonious keep the frontline strong on piano, and work with familiar players are the core who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums. Nelson's touch seeks mostly to augment the Monkish lines with some larger horn shadings – sometimes a bit upbeat, but never more swinging than Monk might want. There's enough of a blue tone here to keep this one nicely in line with the rest of the 60s Columbia catalog for Thelonious – and titles include "Monk's Point", "Consecutive Seconds", "Let's Cool One", and "Rootie Tootie". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Sun Ra & John CageJohn Cage Meets Sun Ra – The Complete Concert (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Meltdown/Modern Harmonic, 1986. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A legendary meeting of talents from two different sides of the underground – avant composer John Cage and jazz visionary Sun Ra – both performing together at a special one-night event that took place at Coney Island in 1987! The set doesn't really feature Ra jamming with Cage (as if anyone could "jam" with John Cage!) – and instead, both players were on the stage at the same time, but would each step aside to let the other do their thing – Cage would vocalize in these amazing passages that are right up there with the most beautiful vocal work he ever did, alongside some "silent" performances too – and Ra would play keyboard solos that have a beautifully offbeat electric vibe! The pair do come together at one point – but mostly in a "silent" duet, although one title does feature Cage's weird vocals with Ra's keyboard. And big bonus – this package also presents the full complete concert – with material that appears here for the first time ever – including a beautiful vocals from June Tyson over Ra's keyboards on "Enlightenment", other Ra numbers that include "This Is The Space Age", "The Living Parable", "The Damned Air", and "We Hold This Myth To Be Potential". Hozan Yamamoto & Sharps & FlatsBeautiful Bamboo Flute ... LP
Victor/Mr Bongo (UK), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99 21.98
One of the coolest albums ever cut by Japanese wood flute player Hozan Yamamoto – a set that has him working with very groovy backings from the Sharps & Flats ensemble – who almost give the whole thing an MPS label blending of funky jazz and world music sounds! The approach is wonderful – a bit more upbeat and swinging than some of Yamamoto's other records, as Nobuo Hara leads the larger group with a totally cool sound – which makes the flute lines a sweet exotic touch over straightforward, soul-drenched, big band jazz! We might even link the sound to some of Dorothy Ashby's grooviest albums for Chess/Cadet – although with flute, instead of harp – and titles include "Komoro Mago-Uta", "Soma Bon-Uta", "Kokirio Bushi", "Sado Okesa", "Tairyo Utaikomi", and "Kuroda-Bushi". LP, Vinyl record album
