Beverly Glenn-CopelandBeverly Copeland (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
CBC/Return To Analog (Canada), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 29.99
Completely sublime work from Beverly Glenn Copeland – a really unique artist who's almost a genre unto herself – and who sings here in a mix of folk, jazz, and soul – maybe resonant with work at the time by Terry Callier or Nina Simone, but every bit as individual as the best from those two giants too! The performance was recorded by CBC at a key moment in Beverly's career – after a time she'd spent on the scene in Montreal, really soaking up different influences and exploring musical pathways away from her American roots – to a point where she emerges here as a very righteous, yet very personal singer – clearly not immediately interested in chart success, even though she's got the power of a young Roberta Flack. Titles include "Northwind", "Swords Of Gold", "Don't Despair", "Nothing Beautiful", "Song From Beads", "Untitled", "Interval", "Reflections", and "Durocher". LP, Vinyl record album

Beverly KenneySnuggled On Your Shoulder – 11 Previously Unreleased Recordings (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
SSJ (Japan), 1954. Used ... $18.99 26.99
A real musical discovery from vocalist Beverly Kenney – rare session material from 1954, recorded even before her first few albums on the Roost label! The sound here is very spare – with Bev on vocals and Tony Tamburello on piano – in a style that might be called "demo" during later years, when singers always expected more instrumentation to be added later on – but which comes off perfectly here in a late nite, intimately jazzy mode! Beverly's vocals are wonderfully strong, but never overdone – really holding the record with a presence that's breathtaking, and almost more so than any of her later work with bigger groups. Titles include "Gay Chicks", "Tea For Two", "There Will Never Be Another You", "Moe's Blues", "Can't Get Out Of This Mood", "Snuggled On Your Shoulder", and "That's All". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD
(Out of print, includes obi.)

✨✧ Beverly Glenn-CopelandBeverly Glenn-Copeland ... LP
GRT (Canada), 1970. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An underground classic from Beverly Glenn-Copeland – an artist who was later known more as a keyboard player, but who here works in this amazing blend of folk, jazz, and soul! The album's vaguely in the territory of Terry Callier on early 70s Cadet Records, but also has its own special vibe too – deeper, darker sound overall – with subtle blending of acoustic elements that are mixed with Beverly's vocals in a way that's unlike anything we can really describe! The singer has a subtle power – a style that could be too dramatic in the wrong setting, but which is fitted here with musical elements that really help the songs flower in the best sort of way – instrumentation that includes contributions from Jeremy Steig on flute, Don Thompson on piano, and Lenny Breau on guitar. Titles include the fantastic long groover "Erzili", plus "Cumberland Passing", "Song From Beads", "Colors Of Anyhow", "Ghost House", "Swords Of Cold", and "My Old Rag Or Hysterical Virgin". ✨✧ Beverly KenneyCome Swing With Me ... CD
Roost/Warner (Japan), 1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Early work by singer Beverly Kenney – a great 50s jazz vocalist who never got her due, but who managed to make some pretty fine records at the time! This album's one of them, and features backings from Ralph Burns – not as dark and moody as some of his other work of the 50s, and in a lightly, sprightly swinging style that really works well for Bev – often with a nice gentle swing that works well with the jazz modes of her vocals. Titles include "If I Were A Bell", "This Can't Be Love", "Give Me The Simple Life", "You Make Me Feel So Young", and "You Go To My Head". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Herbie MannFlamingo – Herbie Mann Quartet Volume 2 ... LP
Bethlehem, 1955. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An early showcase for the cool, compressed flute work of the young Herbie Mann – a style that created a great bridge to jazz for so many later players on the instrument! The Mann heard here isn't the overblown, soul-drenched Herbie of the 60s – but a player who's very careful with his tone and timing, yet still able to swing incredibly well! Herbie's solos are a masterpiece of economy – and set up strongly in a hip quartet that features some equally careful work from Joe Puma on guitar – plus Charles Andrus on bass and Harold Granowsky on drums. There's a number of strong original tunes on the set – numbers written with a bit of wit and angular finish – and titles include "Jasmin", "Woodchuck", "One Way Love", "Sorimao", "The Influential Mr Cohn", and "Beverly". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has light surface wear & aging.)

✨✧ Hank MobleyReach Out! (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1968. Used ... Out Of Stock
An excellent Hank Mobley session – with an unusual twist that takes it past his earlier work! The lineup's great all the way through – with Woody Shaw on trumpet, George Benson on guitar, and Billy Higgins on drums – and the addition of Benson's guitar gives the tracks a groovily swinging edge that really makes them dance nicely! The set's got 4 originals – "Good Pickins", "Up Over & Out", "Beverly", and "Lookin East" – and 2 soul covers – "Reach Out" and "Goin' Out Of My Head" – and Mobley never misses a beat. Mobley was so great during this period, and we always mourn the fact that he hardly recorded much afterward! CD
