✨✧ Johnny GriffinStudio Jazz Party ... LP
Riverside, 1960. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Stellar early Riverside session put together by Johnny Griffin's friend (and impresario) Babs Gonzales. Babs decided that the session would be real swingin', real groovy, if they had sort of a "party" in the studio, so he opened up the session, invited a lot of guests, got a lot of food (and booze), and let the festivities begin. The result is one of Johnny Griffin's best recordings, special not only because it's got the vibe that we're describing, but also because it features great performances by underrecorded talents like trumpeter Dave Burns and pianist Norman Simmons. Great stuff! Titles include "Party Time", "Low Gravy", "You've Changed", and "Toe Tappin". LP, Vinyl record album
(70s Japanese pressing, SMJ-6145.)

✨✧ VariousOkeh Jazz ... CD
Okeh/Epic, 1950s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent collection of obscure jazz and R&B instrumental sides from the great Okeh label of the 50s – including some excellent stormers from Chicago! Little Johnny Griffin checks in with "For Dancers Only", "Flyin Home", and "Chicago Riffin", and the first two cuts feature vocals by Babs Gonzales! Other tracks include "Money Is Honey" and "I Want A Big Butter & Egg Man" by Mary Ann McCall; "Dig This Menu Please" and "Red's Mambo", two fantastic R&B tunes from trumpeter Red Rodney; and "Smooth Sailin", "Walkin Home", and "Whispering", all by Arnett Cobb, and included here with some other nice tunes that rank with some of Cobb's best work. CD
(Out of print. Tray card is creased.)
