✨✧ Babs GonzalesExpubident World Of Babs Speedy Gonzales ... LP
Expubident, Late 60s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the rarest albums ever from singer Babs Gonzales – one of the coolest vocalists to ever hit the bebop scene! The record is issued on Babs' own label, and lists Clark Terry, Melba Liston, Charlie Rouse, Johnny Griffin, Horace Parlan, and Ray Nance on the cover – although we're not sure if they're all on the set. You can definitely here some strong Nance-like violin work soloing on side b – a nice change for Babs. Side one is more swinging – and titles include "Cool Cookin", "Le Continental", "Me", "Lullaby Of Doomed", "Beginning Of The End", and "Babs Mood For Love". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover is stained and flaky on the bottom 3 inches, but also appears to have been signed by the artist on front.)

VariousOkeh Jazz ... LP
Okeh/Epic, 1950s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $9.99
An excellent collection of obscure jazz and R&B instrumental sides from the great Okeh label of the 50s – including some excellent stormers from Chicago! Little Johnny Griffin checks in with "For Dancers Only", "Flyin Home", and "Chicago Riffin", and the first two cuts feature vocals by Babs Gonzales! Other tracks include "Money Is Honey" and "I Want A Big Butter & Egg Man" by Mary Ann McCall; "Dig This Menu Please" and "Red's Mambo", two fantastic R&B tunes from trumpeter Red Rodney; and "Smooth Sailin", "Walkin Home", and "Whispering", all by Arnett Cobb, and included here with some other nice tunes that rank with some of Cobb's best work. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a sticker along part of the spine.)

✨✧ Slim GaillardLaughing In Rhythm – Best Of The Verve Years ... CD
Verve, 1950s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Insanely great work from Slim Gaillard, the self-styled LA hipster who rose to prominence in the wartime blues and jazz scene, and who continued to wow audiences for years with his unique blend of hipster jazz! This CD features some of Slim's best work – recorded for Verve in the 50s, and painfully unavailable for years. Slim sings in a voice that's all his own – mixing bluesy crooning with scatting and plenty of talking in his own language of "vout". Consider him a west coast version of Babs Gonzales, and you've got part of the picture – but you'll need this set to fill in all the spaces. Titles include "You Goofed", "Arabian Boogie", "Tip Light", "Serenade To A Poodle", "Babalu Orooney", "Laughing In Rhythm", "Chicken Rhythm", and the complete "Opera In Vout". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Johnny GriffinLittle Giant (XRCD pressing) ... CD
Riverside/JVC, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Johnny Griffin's hard blowing LPs as a leader for Jazzland – recorded with a crack lineup that includes Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Wynton Kelly on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Albert Heath on drums! This is the kind of work that the term "hard bop" was coined for – sharp-edged jazz at its best – informed strongly by earlier bop and modern modes, but also played with a deeper dose of soul overall. The six players come together perfectly throughout – working with a tightness that matches most Blue Note work of the time – and titles are a great set of tracks that includes 3 by Chicago pianist Norman Simmons, and 1 by the great Babs Gonzales. Tunes include "Olive Refractions", "The Message", "Lonely One", "Playmates", and "63rd Street Theme". CD
(Out of print.)
