Ulysses Owens JrSongs Of Freedom – The Music of Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, & Joni Mitchell ... CD
Resilience, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Titles include "Balm In Gilead", "Borderline", "Driva Man", "Baltimore", "Everything Must Change", "Freedom Day", "Be My Husband", "Mississippi Goddamn", and "Both Sides Now". CD

Palm UnitDon't Buy Ivory Anymore – The Music Of Henri Texier ... CD
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
Palm Unit began their recorded career with a great tribute to French jazz legend Jef Gilson – but here, they maybe sound even more amazing – in an album that takes on the tunes of bassist Henri Texier, but with results that are completely the group's own! Bass definitely figures in the music – as organist Frederic Ecoffier plays some very cool bass synth too – but the music has this warm, organic flow that's very much like some of the more unusual albums that Texier recorded in the 70s – music that certainly has jazz at the core, but which is very open to embracing other sounds too – in a lineup that also features Lionel Martin on tenor, Philippe Pipon Garcia on drums, and Abraham Mansfarroll on percussion. The drums and percussion dance along in these wonderful rhythms with the keyboards and electric bassbits – and the tenor tops things off with a very soulful vibe. The set features one track with vocals – "Le Piroguer" – and other titles include "Homme Rogue", "Mad Nomad", "Don't Buy Ivory Anymore", "Quand Le Blues S'En Ira", and "Mr Freeman". CD

Cecil Payne, Phil Woods, & OthersNight At The Five Spot – The Music Of Charlie Parker ... LP
Signal, 1957. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
A really well done memorial to the (then) recently-departed Charlie Parker – cut with an unusual lineup that features Cecil Payne on baritone sax, Phil Woods on alto, and Frank Socolow on tenor – all working through long, laidback takes of 4 of Bird's best known compositions! There's a really relaxed feel to the record that's totally great – and the players aren't so much aping the sound of Charlie Parker's work, as they are working in the newer freedoms allows by it – stretching out in freely creative lines that never fail to please, and working here with a rhythm section that includes Duke Jordan on piano, Wendell Marshall on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. The album was recorded live at the Five Spot – and titles include "Parker's Mood", "Steeplechase", "Buzzy", and "Scrapple From The Apple". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove, with RVG stamp and AB etch. Vinyl plays with crackles towards the beginning of Side A, the rest plays well. Cover looks great, lightly aged but still nice and sharp.)

Chano PozoRumbero Mayor – An Overview Of The Legendary Afro-Cuban Conguero That Changed Latin Music & Jazz Forever ... LP
Grosso! (Spain), 1940s. New Copy 2LP ... $34.99
A massive slice of music from percussionist Chano Pozo – best known as the guy who helped forge the mix of bebop and Latin that became known as cubop in the 40s – but also a hell of a musician in his own right too! The set brings together work from a wealth of early 78rpm singles – both cubop material that Pozo recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and others – plus earlier straighter Latin work, with artists from both the New York and Havana scene! There's been some great CD issues of Chano's music from the time, but the package may be the first LP set to really do things justice – and features a total of 28 tracks that all feature Chano Pozo on percussion – titles that include "El Pin Pin" by Cascarita, "Guaguina Yerabo" by Miguelito Valdes, "Paran Pan Pin" by Panchito, "No Se Que Tienes" by Olga Guillot, "Seven Seven" by Chano Pozo, "Cubana Be" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rumba En Swing" by Chano Pozo, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Boco Boco" by Tito Rodriguez, "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cometelo To" by Chano Pozo, "Llora" by Cascarita, "Nague" by Miguelito Valdes, "Amparame" by Reinaldo Valdes, "Paran Pin Pin" by Panchito Riset, and "Conga De Los Dandy" by Orquesta Hotel Nacional. ✨✧ Mike Reed, edCity Was Yellow – Chicago Jazz & Improvised Music 1980-2010 ... Book
Mike Reed, 2019. New Copy ... $28.99 35.00
A beautiful book on the Chicago jazz scene, and the things that make it really special – not the Windy City world of years back – when Ramsey Lewis and other big names were dominating things – but Chicago in more recent years, when the city has been a non-stop hotbed of continuous creative activity! Musician Mike Reed is the guiding force here – himself a key part of the growth of the past decade or two – and the presentation is very unique, with a short essay on a key musician, accompanied by a photo, then also a piece of music by the artist – transcribed on full sheet music, scoring a key contribution – in a way that makes the large volume both a history book and a book of sheet music as well. Entries are by key critical forces on the Chicago scene – John Corbett, Peter Margasak, John Litweiler, Neil Tesser, and others – and the presentation is as beautiful as the sounds it seeks to document. Entries include sections on Nicole Mitchell, Jason Adasiewicz, Ken Vandermark, Jeff Parker, Von Freeman, Mantana Roberts, Willie Pickens, and many others – and the book is oversize, 154 pages, softcover, and in two-tone color throughout. Rongetz FoundationAlphabet City Music Club ... LP
Brooklyn Butterfly, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
We've loved these guys since the start, but this time around they really seem to be knocking it out of the park – fusing their fantastic blend of funky jazz and contemporary soul with a fresher vibe than they've ever had before! These guys draw on plenty of classic elements, but never sound like a retro group at all – as they've got this bold spirit and forward-thinking energy that bristles with positivity, and really marks their music right from the start. The singers get some really great space in the spotlight this time around – a lineup that includes Vanisha Gould, Alina Engibaryan, Mr Day, and Vuyo Sotashe – plus rapper Lewis Parker. Rongetz plays trumpet, produced, and arranged – and instrumentation includes some great keyboards and organ, plus tenor, alto, and flute. Tracks include "The Tour Song", "Clapping Your Soul", "Funky Fancy NYC", "Death Of A Music Box", "Success Success", "Murky Park", and "Somehow Blues". (New Grooves, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

Howard RumseyMusic For Lighthousekeeping – Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars Vol 8 ... LP
Contemporary, 1956. Near Mint- ... $2.99
An obscure later entry in the Lighthouse All Stars series on Contemporary – but a great one too – and a set that's less less overflowing with big name players, than a well-conceived small group session! Rumsey's leading the sextet on bass, but other players are even more noteworthy – and include Bob Cooper on tenor sax, Frank Rosolino on trombone, Conte Candoli on trumpet, and Stan Levey on drums – as well as Sonny Clark on piano, making a rare west coast appearance here! The interplay between group members is slightly unusual for the scene at the time – still tightly-crafted, but often with phrasings that don't immediately scream "LA 50s". Titles include "Octavia", "Taxi War Dance", "Love Me Or Levey", "Jubilation", "I Deal", and "Latin For Lovers". LP, Vinyl record album

The college players are pretty fantastic, too – as the set features saxophone solos by young Tom Chapin, Jerry Weldon, Peter Belasco, and Andrew Beal – and great piano work from Harry Pickens and Alan Watson. Most tunes are older jazz numbers, given fresh arrangements by Jeffrey – and titles include "Darben The Red Fox", "Last Train From Overbrook", "Chi Chi", "Hail To The King", "Straight Ahead", "Fried Bananas", and "Moody's Mood". It's the solo work that makes the "jazz" component hold out nicely – and titles include "Poem For Brass", "Three Little Feelings", and "Pharoah". LP, Vinyl record album

Tomasz StankoMusic 81 – Polish Jazz Vol 69 ... LP
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A lost chapter in the career of Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko – better known for his recent recordings on ECM, and his classic 60s work with Komeda – but sounding surprisingly great here as well! The album's a relatively straight set of tracks that feature Stanko with a quartet – blowing in a mode that's more forthcoming than on some of his experimental and ethereal sessions – using an earthy tone that seems to dig into the dirt, and come up with bold, new notes. A few tracks have a feel that's a bit like that of Freddie Hubbard in the same period – particularly on the recordings where he was moving back to straight jazz, from electric work. But Stanko's tone is something fierce on the set, and unique his own – especially on the album's few more exploratory numbers. Titles include "Ahuha", "Third Heavy Ballad", "Alusta", and "Daada". Tomasz StankoMusic For K ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1970. New Copy ... $14.99
Bold genius from Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko – a memorial tribute to the recently-departed Krzysztof Komeda – Stanko's musical mentor and frequent partner during the 60s! The work builds strongly on the angular modes explored by Komeda during the Astigmatic years – a stark, staccato mode that was as inventive and compelling as anything that Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, or Joe Harriott were doing at the time. Stanko's kept the Komeda spirit running very strongly in this set – using pulsating rhythms at the bottom to drive a set of longish tunes with full force, as freer solos cascade over the top with intense energy and amazing focus. The group's a quintet – with Zbigniew Seifert on alto sax and Janusz Muniak on tenor – and titles include "The Ambusher", "Infinitely Small", "Cry", and "Music For K". CD

Steve SwallowHome – Music By Steve Swallow To Poems By Robert Creeley ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A real standout in the classic catalog of ECM – not only because the record's got a slightly different inspiration than most, but also because it seems to unlock some especially beautiful moments from players who could sound different in other settings on the label! As the title indicates, the tunes here all take inspiration from the poetry of Robert Creeley – but never in a mode that's got the usual jazz meets poetry approach – as Sheila Jordan sings the lyrics when they appear, with a sense of her own power that's very different than a more standard recitation – and which, to us, really feels a lot like her great vocal performances with Steve Kuhn for ECM. Kuhn is also in the group on piano, and other musicians include David Liebman on saxes, Lyle Mays on keyboards, and Bob Moses on drums – all working under the superb leadership of bassist Steve Swallow – who really outdid himself with the depth of feeling in this project. Titles include "Colors", "In The Fall", "She Was Young", "Some Echoes", "Ice Cream", and "You Didn't Think". CD

Fischer plays piano on the record – and other players include Laurindo Almeida on guitar, Paul Horn on reeds, Johnny Rae on timbales, and Milt Holland on percussion. Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1972. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $44.99 50.99
A searing live set from trumpeter Charles Tolliver – one of the few talents who could take his instrument into the kind of long-blown, beautifully open territory explored on a double length album like this! Tolliver maybe inherits a late Lee Morgan quality, but also opens up with the Woody Shaw generation – but at a level that's even more exploratory than Woody, and which follows up the fantastic sounds of his two part Live At Slugs albums, issued slightly earlier on the Strata East label! Strata is a name that's come to be synonymous with the best in spiritual jazz of the 70s – and Tolliver is the key figure at the top of that legacy – really making magic here in a quartet that includes John Hicks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Alvin Queen on drums. Titles are all nice and long – and include "Grand Max", "Truth", "Prayer For Peace", "Our Second Father" and "Repetition". LP, Vinyl record album

Okka Disk, 2007. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Some of the most beautiful, introspective work we've heard in years from Ken Vandermark – spare duets with pianist Pandelis Karayorgis – done in a mode that almost recalls the best experiments of Lee Konitz or Jimmy Giuffre from many years back! The sound is spare, but never too sleepy or lacking for inspiration – as Vandermark really opens up in this setting, matching the angular piano work of Karayorgis with some beautifully thoughtful lines on a variety of saxophones and clarinet. Some tunes have a slow-building approach that hangs the sound in the air almost magically – while others come on with a full attack, then slow things down for a bit of contemplation. As always with Vandermark, the influences of the music are given full credit throughout – and titles include "JCT", "United Forces Of One", "Lifgatowy", "Betwixt", "Title Without Year", and "Absolute Camel". The set's a bit unusual for Atlantic Records at the time – almost more of a Prestige or Blue Note-styled date – as Wallington's loose, open, and really hits his groove – working alongside Teddy Kotick on bass and Nick Stabulis on drums, both players whose understated approach lets Wallington sparkle even more in the spotlight. The complexity of his performance is wonderful – even while swinging – and titles include "World Weary", "Billie's Tune", "Godchild", "Serendipity", and "Up Jumped The Devil". LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 29.99
One of the grooviest Dorothy Ashby albums of the 60s – a set that has her already-great jazz work on harp backed by Chicago soul arrangements from Richard Evans – all in a blend that's somewhere in the territory of the Soulful Strings, but even groovier! And as an added bonus, Odell Brown even plays a bit of Fender Rhodes on the record – which sounds especially great! Both Ashby and Evans are at the height of their powers here – mixing together bits of jazz, soul, and trippier elements in a sublime late 60s Cadet Records blend – one that's carried off perfectly on the original tunes "Truth Spoken Here", "Tornado", "Cause I Need It", and "Just Had To Tell Somebody" – but which also sounds great on some of the album's cool covers too! Other titles include Brazilian numbers "Reza" and "Canto De Ossanha" – both of which are transformed in Dorothy's hands – plus "This Girl's In Love", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", and "Windmills of Your Mind"! Buddy CollettePolynesia ... LP
Music & Sound/Trunk (UK), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99
A unique, rare, and wonderful album from reedman Buddy Collette – very different than any of his better-known work of the 50s – and a complex little set that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! The album was issued by a tiny label away from the LA scene – and has Buddy blending jazz and exotica, but at a level that's way hipper than any of the more mainstream bachelor pad records of the period – maybe even pointing the way towards the very cool records that Buddy would cut overseas. The group is great – very hip – with Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gene Cipriano on reeds, Justin DiTullo on cello, Red Callender on bass and tuba, Earl Palmer on drums, and either Al Viola or Billy Bean on guitar – very versatile jazz musicians who really follow Buddy's lead on the unusual tunes. Colette himself plays flute and a bit of clarinet – and the set also features some cool vocals from singer Marni Nixon. The "Polynesian Suite" features a bit of narration – and other tunes include "Flight", "Gaugin", "Singapore Sling", and "Japanese Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. Jared HallHallways ... CD
Hollistic Music Works, 2017. Used ... $4.99
The debut as a leader from trumpeter Jared Hall – and a set that very firmly announces his talents! Hall's had a recent legacy of work that includes both small group performances and large ensemble activity – and he really manages to bring that all into play here, as the set has this compositional vision that swings nicely between tight groovers and larger ideas – held strong by a quintet that includes Troy Roberts on tenor, Josh Allen on bass, Kyle Swan on drums, and either Martin Bejerano or Tal Cohen on piano. The cover, title, and everything else about the outside appearance of the record is somewhat understated – but musically, the whole thing bursts out nicely and really stays strong all the way through – on titles that include "Wanderer", "Visions & Dreams", "Brother Spiro", "Apehlion", "Tones For Jones", and "Allure". Hank JonesLullaby Of Broadway – More Jazz In 2 Keys ... LP
Music Minus One, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $6.99
A pretty interesting set from Hank Jones – recorded for the Music Minus One label, and ostensibly to be used as an instructional record for training a budding soloist or singer! The album features Hank leading a group with Mundell Lowe on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, Don Lamond on drums, and Montego Joe on conga – all working through Coleridge Perkinson arrangements of tracks that include "Lullaby Of Broadway", "Bye Bye Blackbird", "You Tell Me Your Dreams", and "Zing Went The Strings Of My Heart". The "2 Keys" gimmick is that each song on the album is presented twice, in two different keys – to adjust to the performer joining in! LP, Vinyl record album

482 Music, 2009. Used ... $9.99
Brilliant music from this Chicago collective – a group who initially turned their talents to resurrecting sounds from the Windy City underground of the postwar years, but who now make their own bold statement of identity! There's a focus here that we really love – an evolution past free jazz modes, into a more defined sense of sound – one that's rich in compositional structure, but which also still lets the players really burn with fires of their own! The core group features great horns from Greg Ward on alto sax and Tim Haldeman on tenor – plus leader Mike Reed on drums and a bit of melodica, and Jason Roebke on bass. Guests include Jeff Parker on guitar, Jeb Bishop on trombone, and David Boykin on tenor – and titles include "VS #1", "It's Enough", "About Us", "Big & Fine", "Flat Companion", "Big Stubby", "Under The Influence Of Lunar Objects", and "Days Fly By (With Ruby)". ✨✧ Mike Reed's People Places & ThingsClean On The Corner ... CD
482 Music, 2012. Used ... $11.99
A great one from Mike Reed and his People Places & Things group – a clear, crisp statement of Chicago modernism at its best – not just modes from Reed's own generation, but from the 50s and 60s as well! Reed's an amazing player on his own – but we especially love the way that he's gone back into Windy City tradition, and found a way to re-introduce a special blend of Chicago jazz – that crucial pre-AACM, post-bop style that would often swing, but have really freewheeling solos too – a mode that really went onto influence American jazz in general once Chicagoans moved onto the New York scene in the 60s. The horns here are key to the approach – really deft work on alto from Greg Ward and tenor from Tim Haldeman – plus some great guest cornet from Josh Berman. Most tracks are piano-less, which allows for even freer reed work – but Craig Taborn guests on piano on two numbers – and the great bass of Jason Roebke holds the set together solidly throughout. Titles include versions of Roscoe Mitchell's "Old" and John Jenkins' "Sharon" – plus the tracks "Warming Down", "The Ephemeral Words Of Ruth", "House Of Three Smiles", and "The Lady Has A Bomb". CD

482 Music, 2016. Used ... $9.99
A cascadingly rhythmic set from drummer Mike Reed – maybe not the kind of record you'd play at any sort of a conventional dance, but definitely an album of forward moving tunes that really take advantage of Reed's dynamic work on the drums! The approach here reminds us a bit of Ornette Coleman on Atlantic Records – and despite the presence of Matthew Shipp on piano on a few tracks, the format is somewhat familiar – almost a harmelodic wrapping of bass, drums, and reeds – from a core quartet that also includes Jason Roebke on bass, Tim Haldeman on tenor, and Greg Ward on alto. The trumpet of Marquis Hill joins the group on three tracks – and titles include "Wonderland", "Jackie's Tune", "A New Kind Of Dance", "Kwela For Taylor", "The Star Crossed Lovers", and "Fear Not Of Man". Andrew's Music, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Rare work from reedman Andrew White – who claims to "bootleg himself" with the release of this album! The CD features material from two different performances recorded in New York during the 80s – both with sidemen who White claims are all now quite famous and "too expensive" to name, and who provide him with strong, soulful backing while he steps out on some of his beautifully-blown solos! White's a tremendous talent on the alto – strongly expressive, very spiritual – always aware of the farther reaches, but always somehow swinging too – a blend that really comes through in the live music here. The set features versions of "Night Dreamer", "Big Nick", "Crescent", and "Pristine" – plus a few shorter tracks – and it comes with copious notes by White, penned at a level that definitely lets you know where he's coming from! Andrew's Music, 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s/2010s. New Copy ... $8.99
Andrew White has always been one of the most enigmatic saxophone players in the world – and one of his most compelling enigmas is his love of repetition – his way of handling the same song in so many different ways, and really unlocking the magic of jazz in the process! Here, White offers up 30 version of his classic "Theme" – a tune he first created in 1963, and which is presented here on recordings from the 70s up through the present, all with White in different modes, on different instruments – a variety of saxes, solo piano, and even some duets between sax and piano – plus larger groups too. Like most of Andrew's self-produced records, the whole thing is pretty incredible – but in a way that's very different than the usual jazz release. CD

A key record in the evolution of Tony Williams as a drummer – and kind of a powerful summation of all the changes he'd made in the 70s – before a return to straighter jazz in the next decade! Williams' drumming here is incredibly fierce at points – almost at a Billy Cobham level – but he also shows the sensitivity to deeper sounds that he first brought into play during the 60s – and manages to mix an ear for fusion modes with some freer elements too – thanks to help from a lineup of players that includes Herbie Hancock and Brian Auger on keyboards, Cecil Taylor on piano, Jan Hammer on Fender Rhodes, Stanley Clarke on bass, Ton Scott on lyricon, and Ronnie Montrose on guitar. Titles include "Tony", "Coming Back Home", "Morgan's Motion", "Eris", "Open Fire", and "Hittin On 6". Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Eremite, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $44.99
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. One of the earliest Muhal Richard Abrams sessions for the Black Saint label – and a set that's filled with unusual musical moments! The tracks here are somewhat freer than some of Abrams' work to come – almost in the looser creative improvised mode of the first generation AACM – expressed with a compelling array of players who include George Lewis on trombone and sousaphone, Roscoe Mitchell on alto and flute, and Amina Claudine Myers on electric piano, piano, and organ. There's slight electric undercurrents at points – thanks to theremin from Yhousef Yancey, and bits of synth from Lewis and Abrams – all used very sparely, and woven into the sound in subtle ways. Jay Clayton sings a bit – in those cool wordless lines of hers, almost instrument-like at points – and titles include "Triverse", "Inneroutersight", "Unichange", and "Sphihumonesty". Abstract OrchestraDilla ... LP
ATA (UK), 2017. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
There's nothing abstract here – as the set's a fantastically-focused tribute to the late Jay Dee – put together in a style that's mostly jazz, but which also has some great vocal touches too! The music's roots are in hip hop, but the presentation here is awash in strong work on saxes, trumpet, and trombone – used over rhythms that are played live, and which have this warm glow that's like 70s jazz funk, filtered through the hop hop generation! Emphasis is on horn solos, but the set also features twin female singers – who provide some chorus vocals, and a warm link between the instrumental modes in a really great way. So maybe consider this both a soul and a jazz remake of the world of Dilla – and a great one too. Titles include "Welcome To Detroit/The Diary", "Dilla Mix 1", "Official/Fall In Love", "Love", "Angel"," King", "Two Can Win", "Raw Sh*t", "Workinonit", and "Stop". LP, Vinyl record album

Timeless, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A tremendous moment for the great George Adams as a leader – a record that won the reedman widespread attention after some key work in the bigger groups of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus! Adams is a searing, soulful player right from the start – stepping out strongly on tenor at the kickoff of the record, but also blowing some flute with this moodier, more spiritual tone that really deepens our appreciation of his talents as a musician. The rest of the group is filled with similar spiritual energy – and includes Ron Burton on piano, Don Pate on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Azzedin Weston on percussion. The style is nicely different than some of George's later work with Don Pullen – maybe a bit more straightforward, but in a great way that really unlocks his voice as a leader – and titles include "Funk A Roonie Peacock", "Metamorphosis for Mingus", "Paradise Space Shuttle", and "Intentions". Amazing work from one of the greatest jazz musicians working today – vibist Jason Adasiewicz, a player with a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of! It's been years since we've been this excited about anyone on the vibes – and Adasiewicz not only returns the instrument to the prominence in avant jazz that it had during Bobby Hutcherson's "new thing" years, but also pushes the instrument forward in this incredible flurry of tones, sounds, and timings! And while these qualities have always been showcased in all of his albums as a leader – and his great dates with other players too – they really come to the forefront in this sublime trio session – a date that only features Jason on vibes, Mike Reed on drums, and Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass. The trio are incredible throughout – and the record's a modern jazz treasure that you could easily stack next to your most forward-thinking classics on ESP, MPS, or even Blue Note in the mid 60s. A stone classic from Cannonball Adderley – and a pivotal set that has him continuing the live recording setting of some of his best 60s albums, while also stretching forward to some of the more inventive ideas of the latter part of the decade! David Axelrod produced, and the album's definitely got his ear firmly in place – a great way of bringing together the album's hip instrumentation – Cannon's alto, Nat Adderley's cornet, and the wicked electric piano of Joe Zawinul – played here in a style that would go onto have a huge influence on countless other musicians on the instrument. Rhythm is by Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums – and as with other Axelrod live albums, there's some great spoken bits left in the mix – Cannon's charming conversation with the audience, which really opens up the tunes. Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. It's here now, though, and the record's a real treat – especially at this price! Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". One of the greatest albums in years from percussion Airto Moreira – a set that really lives up to the complex sort of grooves he first brought to our shores in the 70s! Airto's back home in Brazil for this set, and working with a really great lineup – a group that's heavy on acoustic elements, and which takes the musician back to the soaring spirit of his work in Quarteto Novo, and that time when both he and Hermeto Pascoal were getting the chance to start recording in America as well! There's none of the later fusion modes going on here – and production is nice and open, very organic – really allowing a fantastic flow from the mix of percussion, flute, guitar, saxes, and piano on the tunes. Honestly, the whole thing reminds us more of the album Seeds On The Ground or Natural Forces than it does most of Airto's records in later years – and titles include "Rosa Negra", "Misturada", "Alue", "Guarany", "Sea Horse", "Lua Flora", and "Nao Sei Pra Onde Mas Vai". Always-amazing work from the team of pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set that may well be one of the ensemble's most ambitious records to date – given that side two features a long, complicated suite that has roots in older Japanese musical styles! The balance here is great – side one has the kind of swinging shorter (although still long by most standards) numbers that the group could make explode with color and imagination – and side two features the long "Minamata" suite, which has vocals from a young Monday Michiru, and from singer Hisao Kanze. A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

✨✧ Susan Alcorn/Joe McPhee/Ken VandermarkInvitation To A Dream ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Titles include "Invitation To A Dream", "The Eyes Of Memory", "Rise & Rise", "Every Season Has Its Reason", and "I Am Because You Are". CD

Mats Aleklint/Per-Ake Holmlander/Paal Nilssen-LoveFish & Steel ... CD
PNL (Norway), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99
Mats Aleklint is a hell of a trombonist – free, opened-up, and able to craft so many different sounds from his instrument, he always really blows us away! And here, he's working in a trio that definitely pushes his sonic range – given that Per-Ake Holmlander plays tuba, which really deepens the quality of the music – and drummer Paal Nilssen-Love is at his usual intense best on both drums and added percussion! The phrasing of both brass instruments is great, but we're especially in love with Aleklint on the record – and maybe hear his strengths here even more than on any previous release, partly because the album features two very long improvisations, neither of which falter at all in their extended musical journey. Titles include "Blow Out" and "Sangbolaget". CD

✨✧ Eric AlexanderSummit Meeting ... CD
Milestone, 2002. Used ... Just Sold Out!
This tenor giant gets better and better with each new album! Eric Alexander is one of our favorite new jazz artists of the past decade – still a relatively young player, but with a sound that's incredible, steeped in years of tradition, yet freely creative in his own unique way. His tenor solos on this set stand up to some of our favorite older work by players like Clifford Jordan or Sonny Rollins, and if anything, the backing may be some of the best he's ever received on record. Alexander's playing here with longtime friend and musical partner Harold Mabern – who's as sympathetic to Alexander's sound as he once was to that of Frank Strozier – and the other players in the group include trumpeter Nicholas Payton, John Webber, and Joe Farnsworth. Titles include "Andre's Turn", "After The Rain", "This Girl's In Love With You", "A House Is Not A Home", and "Summit Meeting". CD

Harold AlexanderRaw Root ... LP
Atlantic, 1974. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. Other tracks include "Country Soul", "Raw Root", "New York Sister", and "Street Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Tony Allen & Jeff MillsTomorrow Comes The Harvest (10 inch LP) ... LP
Blue Note (France), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
The great Tony Allen has always been a hell of a collaborator – especially in his later years – and here, he makes some really wonderful music with Jeff Mills – a criss-crossing of acoustic and electric percussion patterns that are every bit as hypnotic as Allen's early material, but in a completely different way! The set features Tony on drums, Jeff on drum machines and electronics, and Jean Phi Dary on keyboards – a much leaner groove than you might be used to for a Tony Allen record – but in a way that makes for sounds that are even more rhythmic overall, and which provide a stunning showcase of Allen's love talents on the drums next to a machine! Titles include "On The Run", "The Seed", "Locked & Loaded", and "Altitudes". (Global Grooves, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

Laurindo AlmeidaViva Bossa Nova! ... LP
Capitol, 1962. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A sweet little album from Laurindo Almeida and his "Bossa Nova All Stars" – not a group of Brazilian musicians, and instead a hip set of LA players who really help make the set sparkle! There's a bit more jazz here than on some of Laurindo's other Capitol records of the time – a great 60s update to the groove he first forged in the 50s with Bud Shank – featuring even more swinging rhythms, inventive instrumentation, and a slightly larger group with players who include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Howard Roberts on guitar, Bob Cooper on tenor, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Justin Gordon on flute, and Shelly Manne, Chico Guerrero, and Milt Holland on percussion! The use of organ is especially nice – a warm wave of sound on top of some great bossa rhythms – and titles include "Naked City Theme", "Teach Me Tonight", "Desafinado", "Mr Lucky", "Theme From Route 66", and "One Note Samba". ✨✧ Rodrigo Amado & Chris CorsanoNo Place To Fall ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99
Searing sounds from this excellent duo – Rodrigo Amado on tenor and Chris Corsano on drums – both musicians that have such a clear, tight understanding of each other that they're able to improvised freely in fantastic ways – whether moving at top speed as a duo, or stepping carefully around empty sonic space as they fill things in together! The record is one that really elevates our appreciation of both musicians, and which will have us certainly keeping an ear out for lots more in the future – and Amado especially is really emerging as a bold-toned tenorist with a strong current of soul. Titles include "Don't Take It Too Bad", "Announcement", "We'll Be Here In The Morning", "No Place To Fall", and "Into The Valley". CD

AmalgamInnovation ... LP
Tangent (UK), 1974. Very Good+ ... $34.99
Very nice album by this collective of Brit avant players that includes John Stevens, Trevor Watts, Keith Tippet, and Lindsay Cooper. The music's not as out as you'd expect, and instead grooves nicely at times with sort of a modal edge, augmented by the kind of sharp-toned solos you'd expect from these players. Stevens' drumming is almost funky at times, especially on the cuts "Staggering", "When Is Now", and "Austrian Roll". LP, Vinyl record album

David AmramLatin Jazz Celebration ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1983. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
An early 80s look at Latin jazz from David Amram – with a who's who of Latin jazz players and stellar jazz musicians of other realms – including Paquito D'Riveria, Candido, Machito & Machito Jr, Brazilian percussion guru Duduca Fonseca, David Fathead Newman, Jimmy Knepper, Pepper Adams and others others! What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Includes "En Memoria De Chano Pozo, "New York Charanga", "Brazilian Memories", "Celebration", "Song Of The Rainforest" and more. CD

Erik AndresenGip (with bonus CD & download) ... LP
Flower/Jazzaggression (Finland), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
One of the few albums as a leader from Norwegian alto saxophonist Erik Andresen – a fantastic musician who played in countless other settings, but who's really at his best in the quartet on this session! Andresen has this way of blowing straight and soulful one minute, then stepping outside the next – a bit like Phil Woods during his expansive years of the late 60s – and like Woods, Andresen's got an impeccable tone when he's swinging, but then really opens up when going outside – with a boldness that's almost more tenor-like at points. The group's a great one – obscure, but very well-matched – with Roy Hellvin on piano and some electric piano, Tore Nodrlie on bass, and Svein Christiansen on drums – all musicians who are very well-suited to Andresen's journeys. Titles include "Gip", "Cordon Bleu", "Kjenning Ain't Got A Dime To My Name", "Footprints", "Old Gospel", and "Ode A Jean Louis". LP reissue also adds "Chan & Phil" from another session. Joe Armon-JonesTurn To Clear View ... CD
Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoLive In Paris ... CD
BYG/Fuel 2000, 1969. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Seminal work from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – recorded during their most creative period ever! The album was recorded live in October of 1969 – at a time when the group had pulled up roots and moved to France for a few years, bursting on the European scene with unique creativity that was not getting the recognition it deserved in their hometown of Chicago. The studio sets from this time are already the stuff of legend, and have thankfully made it back on reissue heavily the past few years – and this brilliant live set stands perfectly next to them – matching any of the LPs in the Great Black Music series on BYG/Actuel for sheer creative brilliance and soulful energy! Fontella Bass joins the group for a bit of vocals, and the 2CD set features 2 long tracks – "Bon Voyage" and "Oh Strange". CD
(Out of print – and still sealed!)
