Dave DeRoseAgile Experiments Vol 1 ... LP
Dave De Rose Music (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. Tony KofiAnother Kind Of Soul – A Portrait Of Cannonball Adderley ... LP
Last Music Co, 2020. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A very cool tribute to the legendary Cannonball Adderley – but one that has a spirit that's nicely that of its leader, alto saxophonist Tony Kofi! Tony's got a tone that's different than Cannon – maybe a bit sharper, with this pinched, edgey quality that's really great – and which opens up the familiar tunes in a great way, and sounds especially nice on two of the album's originals! The group also features Andy Davies on trumpet, Alex Webb on piano, Andrew Cleyndert on bass, and Alfonso Vitale on drums – a group who know all the energy an Adderley group performance requires, while also letting their own souls and spirits take new directions too. Titles include "Work Song", "Sack O Woe", "Things Are Getting Better", "Another Kind Of Soul", and the originals "A Portrait Of Cannonball" and "Operation Breadbasket". LP, Vinyl record album

Idris MuhammadPower Of Soul (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Kudu/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 33.99
An incredible record from funky drummer Idris Muhammad! Idris is probably known for his funky break work on Blue Note and Prestige records sessions of the late 60s and early 70s – but by the time of this 1974 album, he was really expanding his style, hitting a laidback groove that went way beyond the simple drum break, into a world of complicated fills and riffs that forever changed the face of funk. The best example of this is the album's standout groove – the massive cut "Loran's Dance", which has a mellow jazzy vibe that you'll recognize from its popular use as a sample cut over the years (by the Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow, and others.) All cuts are long and mellow, and other titles include "Power Of Soul", "Saddest Thing" and "Piece of Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

Placebo (Marc Moulin)Placebo (1973) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 29.98
Seminal sounds from Placebo – one of the hippest electric groups going on the European scene of the early 70s, thanks to some great keyboards and electronics from the legendary Marc Moulin! Placebo's sound here is a unique approach to funky jazz – one that certainly draws from the electric modes of the American scene, and without any of the jamming elements of other Euro fusion groups – but there's also a touch of rockish inflection at points too – especially in the way the rhythms have a tightly pulsating groove. There's none of the indulgence of prog, but there's definitely a lineage going on somewhere in the mix too – and in addition to Moulin's keyboards, the group also features great horns from Nick Fissette, Alex Socrier, and Richard Rousselet. Titles include "Bolkwush", "Temse", "Balek", "Phalene", "Re-Union", and "Only Nineteen". LP, Vinyl record album

We're not sure who the Junnu is here – but the legendary reedman Juhani Aaltonen is definitely the follower, supported here with work by three younger musicians who might qualify as his musical sons! Aaltonen is amazing – every bit as compelling as on his famous Finnish sides of the 70s – blowing tenor and flute, and matched in spirit and soul by the great Jonas Kullhammar – who's also on tenor, and some baritone – really matching Juhani's approach, and reminding us once again that Kullhammar is not only one of the greatest saxophonists of his generation, he's also one of the most generous, and able to shift into the modes of his collaborators. The rest of the quartet features Christian Meaas Svensen on bass and Ilmarki Heikinheimo on drums and percussion – and the whole thing might be one of the most beautiful, soul-drenched records we've ever heard on the Moserobie label. Joshua Abrams & Natural Information SocietyMandatory Reality ... CD
Eremite, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
A really fantastic album from bassist Joshua Abrams – a set that may well be his greatest to date – and that's saying a lot, given all the other work he's given us in recent years! The double-length set has Abrams working with this lineup of improvising jazz talents, but in a way that's very rhythmic, and very organic – slow-building songs that almost seem to mix jazz with inspiration from gamelan music, but with very spiritual currents overall – music that builds slowly and flows to the cosmos – almost in a way that reminds us of the seminal "On The Beach" by Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble! Yet Abrams is very much in his own territory here – working with a lineup that features the leader on guimbri, Lisa Alvarado on harmonium and gongs, Mikel Avery on tam-tam and gongs, Ben Boye on electric autoharp and piano, Hamid Drake on tabla and tar, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet, Nick Mazzarella on alto saxophone, and Jason Stein on bass clarinet – with every member of the ensemble also performing on flutes. The sound is incredible – music to build a bridge to the heavens – and titles include "In Memory's Prism", "Finite", "Shadow Conductor", and "Agree". CD

George AdamsParadise Space Shuttle ... LP
Timeless, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A tremendous moment for the great George Adams as a leader – a record that won the reedman widespread attention after some key work in the bigger groups of Gil Evans and Charles Mingus! Adams is a searing, soulful player right from the start – stepping out strongly on tenor at the kickoff of the record, but also blowing some flute with this moodier, more spiritual tone that really deepens our appreciation of his talents as a musician. The rest of the group is filled with similar spiritual energy – and includes Ron Burton on piano, Don Pate on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Azzedin Weston on percussion. The style is nicely different than some of George's later work with Don Pullen – maybe a bit more straightforward, but in a great way that really unlocks his voice as a leader – and titles include "Funk A Roonie Peacock", "Metamorphosis for Mingus", "Paradise Space Shuttle", and "Intentions". Cannonball AdderleyPresenting Cannonball ... CD
Savoy, 1955. Used ... $6.99
One of Cannonball Adderley's first albums – recorded for Savoy way back in 1955, and done with a free and open style that's a nice contrast to his tighter sides for Mercury! The album's very relaxed – that hardbop blowing session mode that Savoy virtually pioneered – letting the players open up in comfortable studio space, working together almost as they would on a hip live date. Cannon's in the lead on alto, and the group also features Nat Adderley on cornet, Hank Jones on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums – a classic Savoy rhythm section for the two horn players. Tracks are long, and titles include "Spontaneous Combustion", "Still Talkin To Ya", "Caribbean Cutie", and "A Little Taste". CD

Cannonball Adderley with Bossa Rio SextetCannonball's Bossa Nova ... CD
Capitol/Riverside, 1962. Used ... $6.99
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. It's here now, though, and the record's a real treat – especially at this price! Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". Plus, the CD also features bonus single versions of "Corcovado" and "Clouds"! CD

The legendary Nat Adderley is definitely in good company here – a group with excellent work on alto from Antonio Hart – a player who comes off in a very different way than the famous alto of Nat's late brother, Cannonball! Antonio seems to open up some nicely dark currents in Adderley's music – underscored by the piano work of Rob Bargard, who can do a great job of shading things in from below – while the whole group moves with great rhythm work from the team of Walter Booker on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Tunes include two great Bargard originals – "Rob's New Tune" and "War Zone" – plus versions of "Rwanda", "Sermonette", "Corcovado", and "Unit Seven". CD

✨✧ Antonio AdolfoViralata ... LP
Artezanal/Far Out (UK), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Fantastic stuff – and one of the greatest records ever by Brazilian keyboardist Antonio Adolfo! The album was recorded at the end of the 70s, and has a sound that's a lot like the best fusion work by Azymuth – a great mix of jazz and funk, plus more dynamic Brazilian elements – all wrapped together in a way that a rare few hybrids do this well! There's great keyboards right up front in the mix – and the backing has some tight percussion that crackles along and gives the album a heavy bottom and a great groove. The album was originally only issued on the tiny Artezanal label – but it feels like a lost gem from the classic funk years at Fantasy Records – internationally funky, far past just a Brazilian music gem. Titles include the massive break cut "Cascavel", plus other nice tracks like "Viralata", "A Marcha", "Assanhada", "Vermelhinho", and "Brincadeira Em Mi Bemol". (Brazil, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

International Anthem, 2015. New Copy ... $5.99 11.99
Mighty nice work from a really inventive duo – the team of Ryan Oslance on drums and Shane Parish on guitar – both musicians who work with a criss-crossing sound that's part jazz, flavored maybe partly by rock – in a blend that really continues the legacy of some important Chicago sounds of the final years of the 20th Century! There's a wide array of textures from the guitar – sometimes more pronounced leads, sometimes subtle sonic energy, and sometimes rhythmic blasts that really echo the work on drums – which also has a way of stepping between conventional and more unusual modes, as both musicians progress in styles that often have a relatively rhythmic core. Titles include "Power With", "Erosion", "Sundowning", "Rincon Pio Sound", "La Faena", and "Shelter In Place" – a tune that maybe resonates more differently now than when it was recorded! CD

Airto/DeodatoFingers/Airto & Deodato In Concert ... CD
CTI/Vocalion (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $19.99
CTI Records meets that Brazilian fusion sound of the 70s – served up here on two classic albums! Fingers is one of Airto's greatest records ever – a really hard hitting batch of tracks that mix sharp-edged fusion lines with some earthier Brazilian percussion touches – all in a way that nicely steps off of Airto's first few American releases, and warms the groove up with a nice dose of California soul! Flora Purim joins in here on both vocals and percussion – and the rest of the group features Hugo Fattoruso on keyboards and harmonica, Jorgte Fattoruso on drums, and David Amaro on both electric and acoustic guitars – shifting nicely between both instruments in a way that further underscores the blended vibe of the record! Most of these tracks are Airto classics – like "Tombo in 7/4", "San Francisco River", "Romance Of Death", "Ringers", and "Wind Chant" – and the record has a very sweet CTI production style, but is still rough enough around the edges to keep things nice and real! Deodato In Concert is an excellent little live set from Deodato – hard to believe because the sound's just as tight and funky as his studio albums, and possibly even more interesting because he manages to pull it off equally well in a live setting! The record features percussion by Airto, guitar by John Tropea, and vocals by Flora Purim – and those are just the marquee names of a large and amazing grew of great musicians! All tracks are long and complicated, for very hynotic feel throughout. The funkiest number is "Tropea", which has a nice long 8 minute groove – and the set also features a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again", plus the tracks "Parana", "Branches", "Baubles, Bangles And Beads" and "Skyscraper". Amazing! (Brazil, Jazz) CD

Tohru AizawaTachibana ... CD
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". The tracks are all pretty spare, and do a great job of building up the sound – maybe with less of the swing than you'd expect, but certainly a rhythmic core that really holds the sonic elements together – and which also has some occasional global currents that make for an even more evocative mix in the music! The group features David Georgelet on drums and percussion, Stephane Montigny on bass trombone, and Benoit Lavolee on vibes and marimba – and titles include "Jamal", "Msafara", "Harmattan", "Saille", "Bayou", "Serpente", "Mures Mures", and "Scarabee". Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
A fantastic album from trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire – a set that really kicks his career up to the next level, and which is easily the most powerful record he's ever given us! The music finds Ambrose in many moods, all of them righteous – sometimes blowing hard and fierce in a small combo, sometimes issuing out more personal statements in a more stripped-down setting – working with players that include Harish Raghavan on bass, Justin Brown on drums, and Sam Harris on piano – plus vocalist Genevieve Artadi on one especially beautiful number that features Akinmusire on Fender Rhodes! We've loved the music of Ambrose for many years – and this is one of those faith-rewarding sets that always makes it so wonderful to follow the career of any key jazz musician – as we hope you'll also find on titles that include "Roy", "4623", "Moon", "Tide Of Hyacinth", "Cynical Sideliners", and "Mr Roscoe". Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. A really fantastic album from tenorist Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved, but who really seems to be opening up some new sides in his music in the past few years! As you'd guess from the title, the album's in a classic "with strings" mode – Eric's tenor out front soloing, with support from a familiar core trio that includes David Hazeltine on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – all augmented by these really beautiful string passages from Dave Rivello – an arranger we're not sure we've heard before, but who does a tremendous job here – couching the strong tenor lines with a sensitivity that reminds of of classic 60s charts from Torrie Zito. There's a mature, open quality to the whole thing that's really wonderful – a new sophisticated side of Alexander's music, and one that we love from the very first note. Reedman Harold Alexander cut very few albums as a leader – and this is one of the best! You're likely to hear Alexander's work in the background on other sessions, but at the time of this record he was also a visionary leader – perfect for the open, freewheeling vibe allowed by the Flying Dutchman label – in kind of a fusion between earlier 60s soul jazz modes, and some of the spiritual currents of the time! Harold blows both flute and soprano sax here – on a set of long tracks that also feature lots of great work from Neal Creque on piano – himself another musician who only got a bit of time to shine in the spotlight around this time, after a great legacy with Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers. Cornell Dupree also plays guitar on the album – which features just three nicely long tracks – the funky "Quick City Revisited", a sweet cover of "Watermelon Man", and a ten minute jamming take on "High Heel Sneakers". A blend of jazz funk and rawer informed grooves from Harold Alexander – and actually a step into more polished vibes thanks to some Arif Mardin arrangements and a new home at Atlantic Records! Although some of the earlier records cut by reed player Harold Alexander may have been more accurately described with the title Raw Root, this one stands up a lot better today than we remembered it! It has a pretty tight electric sound, and good Atlantic soul grooves running through it – with Alexander on flutes & saxes, Joe Boner in on keyboards, Ricard Davis on bass and Brian Beaks on drums on the bulk of it, with altered personnel on "De Black Musician" and "Lady Euphoria" (which also include vocals by Tequila). Soulful backing vocals credited to Something Different and some guitar by Junior Hanson and some spacey synth by Billy Allessi. Other tracks include "Country Soul", "Raw Root", "New York Sister", and "Street Life". CD

Rashied Ali QuintetFirst Time Out – Live At Slug's ... LP
Survival, 1967. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 46.99
A fantastic rare performance from drummer Rashied Ali – a musician who's best known for his work with John Coltrane during his later years, but who steps out here beautifully as a leader on his own! Ali's tremendous here – effortlessly non-stop on the drums – a player who seems unable to rest even for a minute – with that sense of boundless imagination that really helped set Coltrane free on their recordings together – fused here with contributions from a very unusual quintet that includes Ramon Morris on tenor, Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, and Reggie Johnson on bass! The energy is maybe a rawer step to the side of the ESP generation, and definitely points the way towards the loft jazz scene that Rashied would help form and be such an important part of in the 70s – on titles that include "Study For As Salaam Alikum", "Composition 1", "Ballade", and "Composition 2". AliveCall It Jazz ... CD
Redwood/Celeste (Japan), 1981. Used ... $6.99
The second album by this excellent all-female San Francisco jazz combo – a live date that's even more cooking than their debut! As before, there's a sweetly breezy style to the record – that hip SF sound of the 70s – with echoes of Braziliana and soul amidst the group's jazzier leanings – all wrapped together with a sound that's tight, but never uptight! The female vocals give the music a feel that's like Janet Lawson, Sheila Landis, or some of the hipper European singers of the 70s – and instrumentation is mostly acoustic, save for a bit of Fender Rhodes. Titles include a version of Gil Scott-Heron's "Willing", plus "Greeting Song", "Call It Jazz", "Too Bad", "Golden River/Golden Dream", and "Heaven Is In Your Mind". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

Storyville (Denmark), 1996. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
Beautiful work from pianist Geri Allen – a set that features the musician both with her trio, and with a larger nonet that was put together as part of her winning the 1996 Jazzpar prize – as well as a set that features some great late work from trumpeter Johnny Coles! The first half of the record features the trio – a wonderfully warm group that includes Palle Danielsson on bass and Lenny White on drums – really stretching out on the titles "Feed The Fire" and "A Beautiful Friendship". Then, Johnny Coles joins the trio – and gets a great solo space on a version of "Old Folks" – before the larger group comes in, still with Coles up front in the lead on flugelhorn. Those large group titles include "Smooth Attitudes", "Some Aspects Of Water", and "Skin". CD

Tony Allen & Hugh MasekelaRejoice ... CD
World Circuit, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
A really fantastic collaboration between two pioneers of African music – and a set that nicely opens both into the jazziest side of their talents! Hugh Masekela blows flugelhorn, and Tony Allen handles drums and plenty of percussion – and although both artists sing a bit, the main focus here is really on the instrumentation – as half the album's tracks are instrumentals, and there's plenty of room for solos over the really great rhythms in the mix! The lineup of players is great, too – tight, but with some nice surprises – including tenor from Steve Williamson, vibes from Lewis Wright, and keyboards from Joe Armon Jones – on titles that include "Robbers Thugs & Muggers", "Agbada Bougou", "Obama Shuffle Street Blues", "We've Landed", "Slow Bones", and "Never". Justo AlmarioInterlude ... LP
Uno Melodic/Expansion (UK), 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
The greatest album ever from reedman Justo Almario – and one of the most obscure sets to ever come out on the Uno Melodic label of Roy Ayers! Roy Ayers produced the whole thing, and handled arrangements with Justo – and the whole thing feels a lot like a jazzy instrumental take on Roy's own music of the time – but with a focus more on the tenor and soprano sax work of Almario! Other players on the set include Mudbone on piano, Greg Moore on guitar, and Oscar Brashear on trumpet – and the record's got nicely spiritual currents mixed with very soulful fusion – a superb blend throughout, and very different than the slicker recordings that Justo put out in later years. Titles include the Roy Ayers tunes "Sho You Right", "Interlude", and "Aquarian Mood" – plus Almario originals "Seventh Avenue", "I'm The One That Loves You", and "Sir John". LP, Vinyl record album

Searing sounds from this excellent duo – Rodrigo Amado on tenor and Chris Corsano on drums – both musicians that have such a clear, tight understanding of each other that they're able to improvised freely in fantastic ways – whether moving at top speed as a duo, or stepping carefully around empty sonic space as they fill things in together! The record is one that really elevates our appreciation of both musicians, and which will have us certainly keeping an ear out for lots more in the future – and Amado especially is really emerging as a bold-toned tenorist with a strong current of soul. Titles include "Don't Take It Too Bad", "Announcement", "We'll Be Here In The Morning", "No Place To Fall", and "Into The Valley". CD

Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 18.99
A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". An early 80s look at Latin jazz from David Amram – with a who's who of Latin jazz players and stellar jazz musicians of other realms – including Paquito D'Riveria, Candido, Machito & Machito Jr, Brazilian percussion guru Duduca Fonseca, David Fathead Newman, Jimmy Knepper, Pepper Adams and others others! What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Includes "En Memoria De Chano Pozo, "New York Charanga", "Brazilian Memories", "Celebration", "Song Of The Rainforest" and more. CD

Roman AndrenJuanita & Beyond – Live Studio Sessions ... CD
Ajabu/P-Vine (Japan), 2008. Used ... $11.99
Incredible work from Roman Andren – a genre-defying set that's filled with warmth, soul, and imagination – all recorded live in the studio with a really organic feel! The music's a cross between a few different jazz, Afro, and Latin modes – played by a group that features Roman on Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, with tenor, flute, trumpet, guitar, and some especially great rhythms – lively percussion that brings a bit of a Latin or Brazilian flavor to the music at points, and pushes the set with some great club jazz energy. There's a bit of vocals on the record too – sung by Susanne Ottebring or Miriam Aida – and Fredrik Kronkvist also plays a bit of guest alto sax too. The whole thing's wonderful – a warmly seductive album that really grabs us from the get-go – filled with wonderful tunes that include "Long Ago & Far Far Away", "Felaflight", "Nawana", "Bumblebee", "Let's Live Forever Love", "It's Nice", and "O Mundo E Seu". Groundbreaking improvisations from the duo of Paul and Limpe Fuchs – working here at the Days Of Free Music Festival in 1977, on a host of unusual instruments of their own creation! About the only thing familiar here is the set of drums played at times by Limpe – alongside all sorts of other incredible things created by the pair – including a bowed stringed instrument, a large horn of copper, strange combinations of exotic wind instruments and mouthpieces, a foot zither, and other unusual percussion instruments – all used in ways that are very open and improvised – almost as if you had a troupe of Harry Partch musicians creating their own music after hours. Limpe and Paul also each get a solo track – but most of the set is duo improvisations! LP, Vinyl record album

Brownswood (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic second set from keyboardist Joe Armon-Jones – a musician we first came to love in the UK-based Ezra Collective, and one who's now effortlessly bridging a space between jazz and soul! The record's got a vibe that's as cosmic as its cover – but one that comes not just through creative keyboard work, but from a great overall conception of the songs – so that Joe's music flows out with a warm style that embraces our ears, then takes us on a journey to the heavens! This isn't the usual keyboard jazz, with references heavy on the past – as Armon-Jones is as forward-thinking as his best contemporaries on the London scene. The set features great guest vocals from Georgia Anne Muldrow on the tune "Yellow Dandelion" – and other guest appearances by Nubya Garcia, Jehst, and Obongjayar – on titles that include "Try Walk With Me", "Gnawa Sweet", "Icy Roads", "To Know Where You're Coming From", "The Leo & The Aquarius", and "Self Love". ✨✧ Horacee ArnoldTales Of the Exonerated Flea ... CD
Columbia/Wounded Bird, 1974. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A lost fusion classic from the early 70s – one of the only records cut under the leadership of drummer Horacee Arnold, but a heck of a great little set with a soaringly righteous sound! The style here is plenty full-on, but a bit less rock-leaning than some of the other Columbia fusion of the period – thanks to a spacious vision on Arnold's part, and the inclusion of a fair bit of sounds from world music. Players on the set include Art Webb on flute, Sonny Fortune on soprano sax, John Abercrombie on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and marimba, Dom Um Romao on percussion, and Jan Hammer on moog and electric piano – and although there's a fair bit of guitar in the mix, the other acoustic elements are kept nice and high too – for a blend that's almost like some of the best Brazilian fusion from later years, touched by a slightly funkier sound! Tracks really stretch out nicely, allowing for plenty of solo space as they roll on, in a way that's almost a cross between Strata East and some of the more familiar mainstream fusion modes of the time. Very hip stuff, with titles that include "Benzele Windows", "Tales Of The Exonerated Flea", "Euroaquilo Silence", "Puppet Of The Seasons", "Sing Night Jar", and "Delicate Evasions". CD

A tremendous recording from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – done during the same Paris stretch as their Great Black Music classics on the BYG/Actuel label – and a set that easily matches, if not tops, those classics! You can really hear the group finding their own space here – taking some of the free jazz explorations of the Chicago scene in the late 60s, and forging them with an even earthier use of both percussion, and the more offbeat sonic possibilities of their own instruments – often with a sense of surprise that you don't always get from some of their later albums. A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". The record features just Sven's violin and Ulrik's guitar – no other backing at all – and the sound is extremely haunting, with plenty of moody passages that just hang there in space and slowly unfold like little musical flowers – sweet sometimes, blue at others – and wonderfully carried off without any overindulgence on the part of either player. Hyperjazz (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $29.99
A record that really carries its message in its title – a set of spiritual ruminations on the nature of existence – inspired by the writings of Sun Ra, and carried off with vocals by Dwight Trible – who joins this Italian group for the recording! Each song is inspired by a different poem from Ra's This Planet Is Doomed – and the music is freely improvised, but in a relatively spiritual way – with leader Tommaso Cappellato on drums, with Fabrizio Puglisi on piano and keyboards, Piero Bittolo Bon on reeds and electronics, and Marco Privato on bass. The set may be one of the most avant albums that Trible ever recorded – and his vocals have the strong resonance of his straighter recordings, but a bit more bite, and a really mighty reach – on titles that include "Tomorrow's Destiny", "Infinity", "Science Has Changed", "The End", "Time", and "You Are From This Planet". A wonderful record from a really timeless group – a contemporary combo, but one who play in the best spiritual jazz modes of the 70s – in a way that really lives up to the vintage vibe of the album's cover! These guys have a long, flowing approach to their tunes – building them up with modal energy that rings out with some great Fender Rhodes alongside the bass and drums – and with basslines that are especially strong, and keep a pulse that seems to allow all the other musicians a great amount of creative freedom, while still hanging onto a groove! Zakari Frantz plays some wonderful alto sax – often with the soaring, soulful qualities of a tenor – and the group also features bold trumpet lines from Ed Lister, Fender Rhodes from Pierre Chretien, bass from Alex Bilodeau, and drums from Mike Essourdy. The first we've ever heard from this group – but we'll bet we'll be hearing more soon! Titles include "Pillars Of Hercules", "Ebb & Flow", "Blue Nile", "Agean Mist", and "Leviathan". One of the most righteous, message-oriented albums ever from David Axelrod – and the third in his legendary trilogy of instrumental sets for Capitol Records! Earth Rot moves even past the modes of Songs Of Innocence and Songs Of Experience – to offer up a chilling message on the environment, circa 1970 – with beautiful arrangements in the best Axelrod tradition – performed by a large group of jazz players who mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – augmented by a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends! The record's broken into two long suites – "The Warnings" and "The Signs" – and the whole thing blends together in a spacey, other-worldly mix of heavy arrangements and trippy grooves! David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... $9.99
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". Capitol/Now Again, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 27.98
One of a handful of amazing albums recorded by David Axelrod towards the end of the 60s – really stunning, genre-breaking music that was years ahead of its time – and which has only finally been getting its due in more recent decades! At the time of the record, Axelrod was a house producer at Capitol Records – where he'd created big hits for Lou Rawls and Cannonball Adderley – and he'd also been experimenting a bit with studio techniques for other rock groups. But here, the Axe brings all his experience into play – then sends things soaring to the skies – with music based on the work of poet William Blake, but delivered in this totally groovy west coast 60s mode. The core of the instrumentation features funky drums from Earl Palmer and bass from Carole Kaye – both of whom really keep things rock-solid amidst the larger mix of strings and instruments directed by the great Don Randi – who himself is pretty darn wonderful too. The music has nice snatches of fuzz and organ throughout – jazzy moments, funky passages, and lots more too – served up on tunes that include much-sampled song "Holy Thursday" – plus "The Smile", "A Dream", "Song Of Innocence", and "The Mental Traveler". William Blake never sounded so funky! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AzanyahOne ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1987. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
One of the hippest records we've ever heard from the Atlanta scene of the 80s – a spiritual jazz set that feels like something that could have been recorded over a decade before – given the warm acoustic instrumentation, and righteous overall vibe! In fact, it may well have been the late 80s issue of this album that's kept it so lost over the years – a bit late in the game for any audiences digging this type of music, and with an odd date that's possibly gotten it missed by diggers mostly looking for 70s spiritual jazz sessions. Yet whatever the case, the album's a gem through and through – with these long, open tracks that build with a great blend of sax, flute, guitar, piano, and plenty of percussion – as well as the warm, solid basslines of Mamaniji Azanyah, the group's leader. There's a bit of vocals, but overall the album's instrumental – with a vibe that feels like some of the best mid 70s sounds on the Black Fire label. Titles include "The One", "In The Beauty Of Holiness", "Praise", "Guiding Light", and "I Will Surely Come Again". CD

An incredible little record – and the set where it really all comes together for this legendary funky jazz group! Azymuth were already great on their debut, although maybe a little experimental at times – but here, they really find the soulful groove that later got them big fame on the US scene – effortlessly blending their tight jazz skills with a dose of samba soul, and turning out some wonderfully groovy music in the process! There's clearly an influence here from the best years of Earth Wind & Fire – but also more of the edge that you'd expect from the young trio – as the amazing Jose Roberto Bertrami blows us away with his wickedly sharp keyboard solos, as Alexandre Malheiros and Mamao create these beautiful rhythms that go way past anything you might have expected from a trio. Far Out (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99
Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. Titles on this second volume include "Manha", "Duro De Roer", "Quem Tem Medo", "Juntos Mais Uma Vez", and "Bateria Do Mamao". (Brazil, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

AzymuthOutubro (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Milestone/Far Out (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Wicked early work from Azymuth – one of the albums that the group recorded when they were really starting to take off on the global scene – burning strong with a soulful fusion vibe, lots of Brazilian rhythm currents, and always hitting all the right notes in their music! The sound here is still relatively spare, and sublimely reliant on the keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami – who plays Fender Rhodes, organ, and percussion on the set. Ivan Conti handles the main percussion, though – a great mix of tight work on the drum kit and rootsier, Airto-like elements that are totally great – and the whole thing's driven along nicely by bass and guitar from Alex Malheiros – a perfectly fused lineup that really hits their own groove on the set. Guests include Aleuda on percussion and vocals, Gordinho on surdo, and Doto on repinique – and titles include "Papasong", "Outubro", "Maracana", "Un Amigo", "Carta Pro Airto", and "Dear Limmertz". Fou (France), 1982. New Copy ... $11.99
A hell of a group – one that features four players who are every bit as much sonic experimentalists as they are musicians – coming together here in a perfect setting to allow free interplay between their tones! Each member seems to contribute equally – and there's a warmly collaborative vibe that seems to occur every time that Joelle Leandre is part of a performance – maybe just because of the careful way she contributes her work on bass, but also (we're guessing) that the lady herself can make everyone else feel at home and bring their best work. Derek Bailey plays guitar, George Lewis trombone, and Evan Parker tenor and soprano saxes – and the CD features two sets of improvisations from the concert. CD

Donald BaileyBlueprints Of Jazz Vol 3 ... CD
Talking House, 2008. Used ... $6.99
A great return to form for drummer Donald Bailey – a player who's probably best known for his work in the classic Jimmy Smith Trio of the late 50s/early 60s – but who sounds especially amazing here in a recent, righteous recording! Bailey's working with some very tight talent – the mighty Odeon Pope on tenor sax, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, George Burton on piano, and Tyrone Brown on bass – all players with a lot of depth in their music, and a brooding intensity that makes the record burn a lot more fiercely than anything Bailey ever recorded back in the day. The horns are especially nice – and although Tolliver's only on two of the album's nine tracks, Pope more than holds his own on the others – blowing that heady tenor sound that always grabs attention right from the get-go. Titles include "Blues It", "Gone Now", "For All We Know", "USQ/Trilogy", "Blue Gardenia", "Plant Life", and "Variations". CD

Chet BakerChet – Ballads By Chet Baker ... LP
Riverside/Craft, 1959. New Copy (reissue)... On November 13, 2020
One of a handful of late 50s albums that Chet Baker recorded for Riverside – all of which are some of his last great 50s work in the studio, before a shift in the 60s to a wider-ranging approach to his music! The style here is definitely in the "classic" Baker mode set down for Pacific Jazz – but a bit more fleshed out by the other players in the set – who seem to push a bit more personality into the tunes, and not just let Chet's trumpet dominate. The sound is soft and gentle – as you'd expect from the title – and other players include Bill Evans, Pepper Adams, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Connie Kay and Philly Joe Jones – all bringing a bit of a New York undercurrent to the west coast Baker solo style. Titles include "How High the Moon", "It Never Entered My Mind", "If You Could See Me Now", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Time On My Hands", and "You And The Night And Music". Aerophonic, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99
Dave Rempis is one of the most consistently deft saxophonists we've ever heard – able to stop on a dime, take a turn, change back again, all while always coming up with new musical ideas – which he does beautifully here, in a series of long improvisations with the Ballister trio of Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics! And it's not just Dave's lack of a hyphenated last name that makes him so quickly creative – as his response to the efforts of his bandmates here is amazing – sometimes out front, almost directing them – other times following slightly behind, and putting things into order while the percussion, cello, and electronics are allowed much stronger sonic freeplay. Titles include "Old Worms", "Hotel Mary Poppins", and "F*ck The Money Changers". CD

Billy BangDistinction Without A Difference (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Billy Bang has always been one of the most incredible players on his instrument – a jazz violinist who could take the strings into freely creative territory, yet also somehow manage to swing – a balance that nobody ever seemed to manage as well as Bang! And while Billy's work in groups is always wonderful, the strengths of his genius maybe come through even more in a solo setting like this – as Bang uses the violin in ways that are completely unheard of, even in jazz work of the decade before – but also while somehow holding to an inherent core that always makes his music make immediate sense, even to the most casual listener. The album's a true testament to the genius that Bang brought to jazz violin – and why we still love him on the instrument more than anyone else. Titles include "Theme For Masters", "Sometime Later", "Improvisation On Sweet Space", and "Loweski". This great edition comes in a gatefold LP-styled cover – almost like a mini version of the original record released by Hat Hut – with bonus tracks that include "Fiddle In The Floodlight", "Subway Ride With Giuseppi Logan", "Echo Vamp", "Prana", and "A Pebble Is A Small Rock". Gato BarbieriLast Tango In Paris ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Sealed ... $9.99
One of the greatest moments ever from saxophonist Gato Barbieri – and that's saying a lot, given that by the time of this recording, he'd already had a great 60s run as an avant jazz musician, and started the 70s with a string of albums that criss-crossed jazz and South American musical styles! Yet Last Tango In Paris may well be Barbieri's crowning achievement – a sublime record that draws on all the richer, more emotive themes of his Latin America projects, but gives them new focus in the arrangements of Oliver Nelson – who ensures that the music is never too cheesy or overdone – quite a feat, given the sexy setting of the film! Gato draws a lot from Argentine tango, but often uses his own sax solos in place of a more familiar bandoneon – in a way that pushes the "new tango" mode of the time even farther – especially when set amidst Nelson's wonderful orchestrations. Titles include many versions of the "Last Tango" theme, plus the tracks "Girl In Black", "Jeanne", "Why Did She Choose You?", "It's Over", and "Fake Ophelia". Laurent Bardianne & Tigre D'Eau DouceLove Is Everywhere ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
A fresh set of contemporary soul jazz from French tenorist Laurent Bardianne – a jazz musician, but one with a tie to other stylistic communities – which you can hear in the record from the very first note! The quintet has a familiar lineup that includes Hammond B3, bass, drums, and percussion – the last from Roger Raspail – but the sound is often very different than the standard grooves you'd expect from such a setting, partly because the presence of Raspail does a nice job of complicating things in the rhythm department, as does the presence of a bassist next to any basslines that might be produced by the organ! Bardianne gets plenty of space to solo out front – often in a way that really matches the changed-up rhythms – and titles include "Kinshasa", "Cabane", "Song Dong Hee", "Apaches", "Insolente", "Everlasting Child", and "Love Is Everywhere" – plus the track "Star 5", which features a guest vocal appearance from Anthony Joseph. Baroque Jazz TrioBaroque Jazz Trio (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1970. New Copy ... $13.99
Beautiful stuff – and one of the most stunning jazz albums ever recorded – a blinding mix of harpsichord, cello, and Indian percussion – with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The album was the brainchild of the cross-culturally fertile Saravah records at the end of the 60s – home to experimental work by Brigitte Fontaine, Barney Wilen, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and others. From the start, the group wanted to work in a boundary-less territory that really pushed the limits of jazz – drawing in inspiration from world music, and working in a style they called "baroque", to emphasize the bizarreness of their project. Given the heavy use of tabla on the set, the album's got a really driving rhythmic component – making for some funky numbers that have been sought-after jazz-dance tracks for years. And the role of the harpsichord is surprisingly strong – played in almost modal lines, but with a hesitating, lilting groove that's quite different to similar use of the piano at the time. Titles include "Delhi Daily", "Chandigardh", "Latin Baroque", "Zoma", and "Cesar Go Back Home". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Largo" and "Orientasie". CD

Challenge/Solid (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $15.99
Masterful later work from saxophonist Gary Bartz – proof that he kept on growing and maturing his style after his initial explosive years in the 70s! This album is a bit more subtle than those righteous classics, but still carries a lot of message in the music – a suite of tracks composed by Gary Bartz and pianist Larry Willis – whose sharp-yet-round tones are a perfect accompaniment to Gary in the quartet alongside the bass of Buster Williams and the drums of Ben Riley! And yes, there's no vocals, nor funky bits – but the maturing power of Gary's message really comes through loud and clear – on titles that include "Children Of Harlem", "Tico Tico", "Amos & Andy Theme", "Heavy Blue", and "Tap Dancer". The group has some hard percussion at the core – and matches Gary's own work on alto and soprano with trumpet from Axel Kaner Lidstrom, keyboards from Al Macsween, and guitar from Shirley Tetteh – a really vibrant combo who help bring Bartz back to the territory of spiritual jazz funk, as he stretches out on the kind of long, snakey solos that first set him apart from the pack! The combo also features Twm Dylan on bass, Jake Long on drums, and Tim Doyle on percussion – and titles include "Harlem Haarlem" and "The Stank" – plus remakes of "Uhuru Sasa", "Dr Follow's Dance", and "Leta's Dance". Trombonist Conny Bauer is a master of deep, dark tones – which are spun out beautifully here next to the bass of Matthias Bauer and drums of Dag Magnus Narvesen – all spontaneously creating in this way that really builds nicely, and which often seems to keep all three musicians equally engaged in the formation of the music! Bauer both plucks and bows his instrument – the latter method one that seems to resonate especially well with the trombone, almost as if the two were singing together in different pitches – while the drums shift from subtle to standout roles in the process. Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $22.99
One of the most beautiful albums of the 70s from pianist Richie Beirach – and in saying that, we don't mean to insult the rest of his other great American work! This set was done in Japan, and it's maybe one of Beirach's most obscure of the decade – but it's also a really special session that features the pianist in combination with two different musicians – guitarist Yoshiaki Masuo on side one, and trumpeter Terumasa Hino on side two – each artists whose contributions bring out a slightly different side of Beirach's sound! The guitar on side one highlights some of those spacious, airy notes that Richie brought to his beautiful ECM sides of the period – while Hino's use of both trumpet and flugelhorn emphasizes some of the darker tones of the piano, but in ways that are completely different than Beirach's work with Dave Liebman. One title is also just solo piano – and titles include "Yesterdays", "Mavrodaphne", "Black Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair", "Zal", and "What Is This Thing Called Love". CD

George BensonBig Boss Band ... CD
Warner/Wounded Bird, 1990. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
George Benson more than earns the title on this one – given that most of the tracks feature backings from the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Frank Foster – a great ensemble who really help keep things soulful throughout! Despite the date of the set, the feel here is a bit more classic than most of Benson's work from the time – as the group bring a full acoustic soul to the record – a swelling, swaying brace of horns that seems to push George's vocals a bit more than usual – past that simply sweet style that was the usual Benson bag. There's a range and depth here that's really surprising – a quality that goes past the hokey title, which might make you expect less from the record – and although there's a few brief moments that get slightly contemporary, these pass quickly in favor of a classic groove. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Without A Song", "Ready Now That You Are", "Basie's Bag", "Skylark", and "How Do You Keep The Music Playing". CD

Fantastic interplay between a very free trio – Josh Berman on cornet, Jason Roebke on bass, and Paul Lytton on percussion – really opening up on two side-long improvisations! Berman can work in more arranged settings, but he's very free here – and expressing himself with this amazingly bold sense of phrasing on the cornet – with energy that just builds and builds as the music goes on! Lytton's a joy, as always – with percussive elements that have a crackle that almost reminds us of some of his electronics, too – clearly a sonic sensibility inspired by that side of the spectrum – rounded out by deeper, more soulful sounds from the bass of Roebke. Groovy boogaloo from late 60s Mexico – an album that's quite different than US sets of this nature! The rhythms definitely show a Latin Soul influence, but the overall execution is in a wider 60s groovy mode overall – with bits of mod jazz, soul piano, and more – all filtered beautifully into some very dynamic grooves! Bert's music has a style that's almost like some of the best Verve sides of the 60s – particularly those with a Latin and jazz crossover blend – and although there's some vocals on the record, the main focus is clearly the instrumental groovings of the group. Piano is especially nice, and comes across with some Ramsey Lewis-ish elements that really keeps things rolling and rollicking – and titles include "Zulianita", "Rosa Rosita", "Do The Boogaloo", "Oh Yeah", "Pete's Boogaloo", and "Manana Sera". Moserobie (Sweden), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
A tremendous achievement in jazz from Daniel Bingert – the kind of record that would be in everyone's collection, had it been issued back in 1959 – but a set that's every bit as essential all these decades later! Binger's the composer, and has kind of a postwar modern sensibility about his music – that mix of core elements and individual voices that made Mingus so great when he was at his best – except Daniel's also got more of an ear for modal rhythms, of the sort that remind us a bit of the inspirations on the European scene during the Saba/MPS generation, taken forward with some of the fresher, completely visionary ideas that we've always loved from the Moserobie label! The group's a sextet with some key Moserobie members in the line up – Jonas Kullhammar on alto, Karl Olandersson on trumpet, Per Texas Johansson on tenor, Charlie Malmberg on piano, Moussa Fadera on drums, and the mighty Torbjorn Zetterberg on bass – whose energy alone is enough to guide the album. One of the most unusual albums we've ever heard from saxophonist Nat Birchall – and that's saying a lot, given the very unusual qualities of most of his work! Yet this set is very special in that it's a solo effort – music by just Nat himself, but never on one instrument at a time – as he works in his own studio to create these tunes that have a strongly spiritual vibe, especially for music from one individual – with a tenor or soprano sax solo often in the lead, amidst other instrumentation that includes bass, drums, percussion, bells, and bass clarinet – plus a bit of work on a Korg minilogue! If you're worried about the album sounding gimmicky, or lacking the depth of some of Birchall's other recordings – don't – because the whole thing is as rich and soulful as all the other kinds of records that have made us love Nat so much over the years. Drummer Brian Blade can be a hell of a percussive force when he wants to, but over the years he's maybe made even more of a contribution with records like this – sets that have him acting as a key creative force with a number of other great musicians – all at a richly collaborative level that definitely earns the "Fellowship" name of the group! The album's got an especially great way of mixing together guitar lines and reed passages – in a style that almost evokes older ECM, but with more direction too – thanks to some of Blade's subtle but effectively rootsy rhythms. Musicians include Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano sax, Jon Cowherd on Fender Rhodes and piano, Dave Easley on pedal steel, Kurt Rosenwinkel on electric and acoustic guitar, and Myron Walden on alto sax and bass clarinet – and the record also features guest vocals from Joni Mitchell on the track "Steadfast", and contributions from Daniel Lanois as well. Arista/Novus, 1980. Very Good+ ... $14.99
One of the most evocative albums we've ever heard from pianist Ran Blake – a set that's got all the sharp edges of some of his most adventurous solo work, but one that also has Ran working in a few different settings, often with a very poetic feel! The set's not a hokey retro-crime record – as you might fear from the title (and countless later jazz albums that evoke that aesthetic) – and although Blake's working through melodies from older films, plus a few original numbers in the same spirit, his presentation is completely unique – and explosively personal throughout! His own piano is tremendous – blocks of sound and runs of notes that are extremely imaginative, and which flow forward from the same dark spirit we love on Blake's other recordings. And they're often balanced with shifting contributions from other musicians – players who include John Heiss on flute, Paul Meyers on bass, Ted Curson on trumpet, and Daryl Lowrey on alto and soprano sax – all of whom make some great additions to the set. Titles include a nice take on "The Pawnbroker" – plus other film titles that include "Eve", "Touch Of Evil", "Le Boucher", "Pinky", and "Doktor Mabuse" – as well as Blake originals "Spiral Staircase" and "Garden Of Delight". Art BlakeyGolden Boy ... LP
Colpix, 1963. Near Mint- ... $34.99
An obscure Jazz Messengers session – but a great one! The album is ostensibly a set of jazz versions of tunes from the musical Golden Boy, and the group this time is a larger one than usual – a total of 10 players, led by Blakey – and playing beautifully over arrangements from Wayne Shorter, Curtis Fuller, and Cedar Walton! The style's not any sort of clunky "jazz meets Broadway" mode, though – as the care taken by the artists involved help elevate the tunes, and the performance, to a whole new soulful level – hardly what you'd expect! The group features trumpet work from Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, tenor from Wayne Shorter, alto from James Spaulding, trombone from Curtis Fuller, baritone from Charles Davis, piano from Cedar Walton, and bass from Reggie Workman – all very hip cats, working here with the same sort of large group textures you might hear on Freddie Hubbard's Body & Soul album from the same time, mixed with some more traditionally Blakey-led moments. Titles include "Yes I Can", "Theme From Golden Boy", "Lorna's Here", "This is The Life", and "There's A Party". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove.)

✨✧ Art BlakeyIndestructible ... LP
Blue Note (Germany), 1964. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Maybe one of the most famous records ever from master drummer Art Blakey – in part because of the cover, which has come to stand for the Blue Note aesthetic of the 60s! But despite that famous image, the music is more than worthy of attention – as the group features that unusual sextet lineup of the Jazz Messengers that made some amazing sounds in the mid 60s – Blakey on drums, Lee Morgan on trumpet, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass! Morgan and Shorter are really growing and pushing themselves in different ways than their work with Blakey at the start of the 60s – and the addition of Fuller, and especially Walton, really gives the group this rounded warmth that shows a new level of maturity – a quality that comes through both in the playing, and the writing – as songs are all originals by Walton, Fuller, Morgan, and Shorter. Titles include "The Egyptian", "Sortie", "Calling Miss Khadija", and "Mr Jin". LP, Vinyl record album

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersAt The Cafe Bohemia Vol 1 (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1955. Used ... $6.99
A classic early set featuring the Jazz Messengers back when the group still included Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, and Kenny Dorham – one of the earliest and purest versions of Blakey's hardbop vision, touched with the slightly exotic lyricism of Silver, which gives the tracks a wonderful edge. The playing is excellent throughout – and the album's the kind of live stormer that shows why the group were such a huge draw right out of the box, and why they performed as well (if not better) in a live setting than they did ain a studio one! Tracks include "Minor's Holiday", "The Theme", "Prince Albert", and "Deciphering The Message" – and the CD features 3 bonus tracks, all long, plus great remastering! CD
(BMG music club pressing.)
