✨✧ Ahmed Abdul-MalikJazz Sounds Of Africa (Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik/Sounds Of Africa) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". CD

✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyMusic You All ... CD
Capitol/Dusty Groove, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Killer work from the same sessions that gave the world Cannonball Adderley's classic Black Messiah album – live material from an extended stretch as the Troubadour club in LA – featuring a very righteous, freewheeling version of Cannonball's group! The lineup features some wonderful work on Fender Rhodes from George Duke – who brings a more soulful, spiritual current to the proceedings than Joe Zawinul did in earlier years – a really commanding presence that hints at his brewing solo fame, and which is a very welcome addition to the core lineup, which also includes Cannon on soprano and alto, and brother Nat on cornet! The performance also fetaures some great guest work from Ernie Watts on tenor and Airto on percussion – who really help round out the long tunes on the set. David Axelrod produced – leaving some nice room for Adderley's key spoken bits – and titles include the 12 minute groover "The Brakes", plus "Oh Babe", "Music You All", and "Capricorn" – plus a sweet take on "Walk Tall", which really has Duke stomping away on the Rhodes! ✨✧ Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD

Teodross AveryHarlem Stories – The Music Of Thelonious Monk ... CD
WJ3, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
It's not unusual for a saxophonist to serve up a record of music by Thelonious Monk – but the approach here from Teodross Avery is nicely different, in part because his natural sense of warmth really transforms the music and makes it his own! Avery blows both tenor and soprano sax – and while some tunes evoke an older reed relationship to Monk, most of the tracks have these fresh arrangements that are very much in the spirit of Teodross' own compositions – nicely fluid, with maybe some of Monk's angles dampened a bit and delivered by two different groups – one with Anthony Wonsey on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – the other with DD Jackson on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and Marvin Bugalu Smith on drums. Titles include "In Walked Bud"," Trinkle Trinkle", "Boo Boo's Birthday", "Evidence", "Teo", "Monk's Dream", and "Ugly Beauty". CD

✨✧ Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Blue Series ContinuumSorcerer Sessions – Featuring The Music Of Matthew Shipp ... CD
Thirsty Ear, 2003. Used ... $6.99
Another nice collection of left-of-center jazz for the digital age from piano/synthesizer maestro Matthew Shipp & co. for his hungry Thirsty Ear label! This set features frequent collaborators William Parker on bass, Daniel Bernard Roumain on violin, Evan Ziporyn on clarinet and others. The feel here, and on some of the other Thirsty Ear releases is kind of a synthesis between live instrumentation and synthetic sounds. We like these guys because the goal seems to be to find an actual musicality between the disparate elements – not just a trail of noise that so many untrained dilettantes pass off as hip free noise in underground circles. Not that Shipp cops out, or goes for an easy listen. To put it simply, there's an identifiable trained musical core to the Thirsty Ear experiments – one we can always appreciate, even when the synthesis isn't entirely successful. Tracks include "Pulsar", "Keystroke", "Lightforms", "Urban Shadows", "Particle", "Last Chamber", "Mist" and more. CD

Bobby Bradford with John Stevens & The SpontaneousBobby Bradford With John Stevens & The Spontaneous Music Ensemble – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
Nessa, 1971/1980. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 25.99
An unlikely, but amazing meeting of the avant jazz minds – a classic set that has LA trumpeter Bobby Bradford coming into play with the UK Spontaneous Music Ensemble, led by drummer John Stevens! The material was recorded, almost spontaneously, on a holiday trip Bradford made to London in 1971 – but the record's become an enduring classic, thanks to the creative energy of the players involved, and the dynamic quality of the improvisations in the studio! Bradford's trumpet sounds quite different here than in his better-known work of the time with reedman John Carter – much more outside and forceful, really set loose in the company of Stevens' group – which, in this incarnation, includes Trevor Watts on alto and soprano sax, Bob Norden on trombone, Ron Herman on bass, and Julie Tippetts on guitar and a bit of voice. This well-done 2CD package brings together all the material from the original sessions – 8 long titles that include "His Majesty Louis", "Bridget's Mother", "Norway", "Rhythm Piece", "Fragment", "Trane Ride/Ornette-ment/Doo Dee", and "Room 408". The cover's black and white, but the album's filled with wonderful colors in sound – a bold array of work from pianist Donald Brown – working here with a hip lineup that includes Vincent Herring on alto and soprano sax, Tom Harrell on trumpet, and Steve Nelson on vibes! Nelson's sharp, chromatic tones really bring a lot to the record – and they're nicely balanced by Brown's work on the keys – sometimes soft and soulful, other times bold and modern – pulling all players along in his sweep. Titles include "Booker T", "Reruns From The 60s", "Prism", "Gaslight", and "The Biscuit Man" – and the album also includes the warmly grooving vocal tune "I Love It When You Dance That Way", sung by Lenora Helm. ✨✧ Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours ... CD
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". ✨✧ Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda ... CD
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $14.99 16.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". CD

Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD

One of the few albums as a leader from trumpeter Don Fagerquist – a player who's best known for his work in larger groups, but who steps out here leading a tight octet of his own! The set's certainly got traces of Don's work within larger west coast groups of the time – but also shares some of the more open and spontaneous styles of his labelmates' work on the Mode label at the time – kind of an opening of the west coast approach of the 50s, still with a focus on arrangements and the overall feel of the work – but also in a way that swings easily and openly! Members of the group include Herb Geller, Bob Enevoldson, Marty Paich, and Mel Lewis – and tracks include "The Song Is You", "Easy Living", "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes", and "All The Things You Are". ✨✧ Victor FeldmanVictor Feldman On Vibes – Champagne Music For Cats Who Don't Drink ... CD
Mode/VSOP, 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A really hip little session – as light and breezy at one level as it is tight and swinging! Feldman's the leader of the set on vibes, but the greatest strength of the album comes from the group – a sextet that places Victor in the company of trombonist Frank Rosolino, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Stan Levey. The rhythm section is especially fluid on the record – very in the pocket, but without overstating that fact – and they allow for extremely open solo work from Feldman, Land, and Rosolino. Side two of the album is a real smoker – with some great ensemble numbers that open up with tremendous horn work – tight, yet free-thinking and soulful, with some slight modern touches. Titles include "Chart Of My Heart", "Wilbert's Tune", "Evening In Paris", "Fidelius", and "Bass Reflex". CD

A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. Charlie Haden & The Liberation Music OrchestraNot In Our Name ... CD
Verve, 2005. Used ... $7.99
Our favorite side of Charlie Haden – one that we love from classic recordings on Impulse and ECM – and heard for the first time in years on this new album of gentle protestations against the current state of the US! The album features wonderfully evocative arrangements from Carla Bley – who also plays piano on the sessions, and co-leads the group of younger players with Haden. Tunes are a tapestry of themes designed to offer a different vision of America than the one that's currently getting dragged through the mud in a host of foreign relations disasters and poorly-planned military outings – and Haden and Bley draw from a surprising range of sources for the material in the set. Titles include Haden's "Not In Our Name", Bley's "Blue Anthem", Pat Metheney's "This Is Not America", Ornette Coleman's "Skies Of America", and versions of "Amazing Grace", "Adagio", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "America The Beautiful", and "Goin Home". Jonathan JurionLe Temps Fou – The Music of Marion Brown ... CD
Komos (France), 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
A beautiful tribute to the music of Marion Brown – a saxophonist who might be one of our favorite jazz musicians of all time – and who always seemed to have a vision that was even wider than the recordings he gave the world! That spirit really seems to come out here – as pianist Jonathan Jurion uses the songs of Brown as a jumping-off point, but then quickly moves into music that's very different than any of Marion's own recordings – yet which, we're guessing, would have really met with his approval! There's definitely horns in the group – trumpet form Josiah Woodson, and tenor and soprano sax from Jowee Omicil – but the core energy of the music really comes from the piano, which is wrapped up with the rhythms in a way that's sometimes echoes work from Abdulla Ibrahim or Randy Weston – even though Jurion's working with a very different sense of rhythm. The group features great drums from Arnaud Dolmen, bass from Michel Alibo, and ka drum from Olivier Juste – on titles that include "Sweet Earth Flying", "Fortunato", "La Placita", "Capricorn Moon", "West India", "Once Upon A Time", and "Le Temps Fou". Nessa, 1976. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
A wonderful later album from 50s cool jazz saxophonist Warne Marsh – one that really has an incredible focus on his tone! With his combination of a warm full tone and cool post-Tristano phrasing, Marsh has one of the most singular voices on the tenor, and one of our favorites! This mid 70s recording has him heading up a quartet playing modern bop, with Lou Levy on piano and Jake Hanna & Fred Atwood providing the pulse underneath. Unlike a lot of other players, Marsh didn't slow down or lose it in later years and his concept sounds as fresh in these later recordings as it does on his classic sides with Konitz & Tristano. The group shines on the Tristano number "317 East 32nd" and Konitz's "Subconscious-Lee" and there's some Warsh & Levy originals too, like "Lunarcy" & "Background Music". CD fatures some alternate takes of the track "On Purpose", "A Time For Love", and "I Have A Good One For You". CD

The record's got a fire and sense of emotion that's missing from a number of other 70s Mingus sessions – and it's one of the few later albums we'd easily rank right up there with his late 50s and early 60s classics! Orchestrations were partially arranged and conducted with help from Sy Johnson – and soloists include James Moody and Bobby Jones on tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, Snookie Young and Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, and Roland Hanna on piano. Titles include "The Shoes Of The Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers", "Adagio Ma Non Troppo", "The Chill of Death", and "The I Of Hurricane Sue". CD features the bonus track "Taurus In The Arena Of Life". CD

Yes, 2017. New Copy 3CD ... $21.99 34.99
Three different works, all created for artist Joan Jonas, and each with a slightly different approach! Pianist Jason Moran has a creative relationship with Jonas that extends back longer than a decade – and over the course of these pieces, you can really hear their ideas develop – from an initial mix of the music of Moran and the text of Jonas, to some richer more textural passages that are almost like paintings in music, words, and sound all coming together at once! Moran plays some keyboards in addition to acoustic piano, Jonas handles a bit of percussion, and the set also features voice by two other performers too. The works are "The Shape The Scent The Feel Of Things", "Reanimation", and "They Come To Us Without A Word". CD

Shanachie, 2005. Used ... $4.99
An incredible departure for Meshell Ndegeocello – a jazz-based project with a sound that's different than any of her other work! The album shows a depth that we never expected – a richly instrumental mode that's only touched by vocals on a few songs – and which is mostly territory explored by Meshell on bass, along with other jazz players that include Michael Cain on keyboards, Jack De Johnette on drums, and sax work from Kenny Garrett, Don Byron, Oliver Lake, and Oran Coltrane! 3 of the album's 8 tracks feature vocals – by Sabina, Cassandra Wilson, and Lalah Hathaway – and the tunes are all long, languid, and laidback – drifting along through some really moody territory. Titles include "Mu-Min", "Al Falaq 113", "Dance Of The Infidel", "The Chosen", "Luqman", and "Heaven". (Neo Soul, Jazz) CD

Silkheart (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Vocalist Fay Victor joins the wonderful group Other Dimensions In Music – for a performance that really helps deepen the sound and knock the whole thing out of the park! Make no mistake, we already love the instrumental side of the group – Roy Campbell on trumpets and other instruments, Daniel Carter on saxes and flute, William Parker on bass, and Charles Downs on drums and percussion – all shifting instruments, and working together in a mode that's very strongly in a legacy that runs from the AACM through the loft jazz generation! But the presence of Victor's voice really adds a whole new layer – contributions from various texts, which are spoken and sung, but in ways that are as unconventional as the music that Campbell and Carter make on their horns. Titles include "An Open Letter", "We Is We Trini", "Saltfish Refried", "Three Friends Advised", "Kitch Goes Home", and "John Gilman Wants Tobacco". CD

Resilience, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Titles include "Balm In Gilead", "Borderline", "Driva Man", "Baltimore", "Everything Must Change", "Freedom Day", "Be My Husband", "Mississippi Goddamn", and "Both Sides Now". CD

Blue Note, 1989. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A classic Blue Note album from Michel Petrucciani – a set that has the pianist working with a larger group than usual, but which still really demonstrates that way that Michel could always sound sweet without ever sounding slick or commercial at all! Petrucciani handles a bit of electric keys and organ, in addition to the large piano sound that usually dominates his records – and the lineup also includes a bit of soprano sax from Joe Lovano, bass from Eddie Gomez and Anthony Jackson, drums from Lenny White and Victor Jones, guitar from Romero Lubambo, and even a bit of vocals from Tania Maria – all guests and musical elements that are used sparely overall, so that the album's still very clearly Michel's own. Titles include "Brazilian Suite No 2", "Looking Up", "O Nana Oye", "Play Me", "Happy Birthday Mr K", "My Bebop Tune", and "Memories Of Paris". CD

GAD (Poland), 1963. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Fantastic work from a saxophonist we're hearing here for the first time ever – Boguslaw Rudzinski, who recorded this set in 1963 – right at the same time Krzystof Komeda and his generation were opening up doors in modern jazz on the Polish scene! Rudzinski is maybe a bit more inside that Komeda or Tomas Stanko, but has this really great edge in his tenor, and a way of coming up with songs that manage to swing, but open up new ideas too – most penned here by pianist Krzystof Sadowski, an artist we do know and love – and who really shines in the group here alongside the guitar of Janusz Sidorenko, bass of Janusz Rafalski, and drums of Wladyslaw Jagiello. The material was recorded for a sound library, and never issued at the time – and Boguslaw plays a bit of clarinet, too – but with a modern Tony Scott sort of edge. Soaring spirits and joyous jazz-based expression – an overlooked treasure from Pharoah Sanders – and proof that his work on Impulse Records just kept on getting better and better! The style here is a bit tighter than some of the previous Impulse albums – no side-long tracks here – but the overall feel is also almost a bit more organic too – with lots of rootsy percussion and earthy sounds in the mix, all emanating from instruments in ways that are quite unique! The core group features Pharoah on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – alongside James Brance on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Norman Connors on drums – plus percussion from the trio of Badal Roy, James Mtume, and Lawrence Killian. Percussion bits and vocalizations drift in and out of most tracks – giving them a rich sense of color and tone, even when the grooves are a bit more direct! Titles include a shorter take on "Love is Everywhere", plus "The Golden Lamp", "Selflessness", "Wisdom Through Music", and "High Life". CD

A wonderful batch of instrumentals from the legendary Raymond Scott – and a set that features some of Scott's most wonderful compositions ever! These numbers all date from the 30s, and were originally released as 78s on the Master Records label – but this later Columbia package really brings the sounds together wonderfully, and gives Scott a long-overdue showcase as one of the budding modernists of the pre-war years – a composer who could match swing and whimsy, exoticism and jazz, playfulness and poise – all without every losing his beat! The instrumental is wonderful, the arrangements inventive, and the whole thing's got the same sort of audio appeal as an old Warner Brothers cartoon. A beautiful little record, and one that seems to take all the African-inspired elements in the music of Randy Weston – and push them even farther than Randy did on his own recordings of the 60s and 70s! The group's headed up by Cheikh Tidiane Seck, not to be confused with Weston's contemporary on the French scene of years back – Chiekh Tidian Fall – and Seck is a great pianist whose talents are spread equally between Fender Rhodes, moog, Hammond, and acoustic piano – in a lineup that also has Yizih Yode on tenor, Mohamed Hafsi on bass, Marque Gilmore on drums, and Adama Dembele on percussion! The rhythms explode beautifully, and differently on each new track – and the album's a perfect fusion of rootsy rhythms and jazz – served up with help from Manu Dibango on one track, and Abd Al Malik on another. Titles include both acoustic piano and Rhodes readings of "Ganawa (Blue Moses)" – plus "African Cookbook", "In Memory Of", "Tanja", "Niger Mambo", and "Timbuktu" – plus the Seck original "Mr Randy". The songs of Chick Corea were a hit with the rest of the jazz world, right from the start – subject to so many great reinterpretations, as is definitely the case here – as the SF Jazz Collective mix Chick's music with some great originals of their own! There's a soaring spirit to the performance that really lives up to the best Corea style of the early 70s – that generation when the keyboardist taught us all how to fly – thanks to tunes played here that include "Matrix", "Spain", "Rumble/City Gate", "Space Circus", "La Fiesta", and "500 Miles". The group also uses the vibes of Stefon Harris to evoke some of the Corea/Gary Burton collaborations – and the rest of the lineup includes Miguel Zenon on alto, David Sanchez on tenor, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Edward Simon on piano, Obed Calvaire on drums, and Matt Penman on bass. Nearly every member of the group contributed an original to the set, and titles include "Gibraltar", "Let's Take A Trip To The Sky", "Home Is", "Grand Opening", and "Incessant Desires". CD

As with most of Shipp's best music from the time, there's an inner logic here that really hangs the whole thing together – a way of being that's quite different than the freedom you might guess at first listen – and which comes across especially well in the interplay between his piano work and the bass of Parker. WJ3, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
A wonderful record from pianist Isaiah Thompson – a player who wins us over even more than usual with this set of tracks from the pen of Buddy Montgomery! Most folks know Buddy as the lesser-known bassist brother of Wes Montgomery – part of the original Montgomery Brothers group – but Buddy's also got a hell of an ear for a tune, as the batch of material here will attest – all songs taken in wonderful new directions by Isaiah and his trio! Philip Norris handles the bass, with the sort of strong, forward sounds that Buddy would love – and Willie Jones III is on drums, and gets a bit of help from Daniel Sadownick on percussion – but it's clear that the real vision here is that of Thompson, whose arrangements are as fresh as his deft, blocky style on the keys – almost a revision of older soul jazz modes, but in a really personal way – on titles that include "Muchismo", "Hob Nob With Brother Bob", "Budini", "Aki's Blues", "Here Again", "1000 Rainbows", and "Ruffin It". Washington sounds great here – stretching out at some key moments – but the sound is definitely that of the group, with Kamasi acting as a strong sideman, rather than forcing his own sound on the set – in a batch of shorter tracks that all nicely demonstrate a sense of economy from all players. Ken Vandermark works here in musical modes first proposed by Joe McPhee – his famous concept of Po Music – performed here by a group that also features Joe, and a whole host of great players from the Chicago scene! Vandermark and McPhee have influenced each other a lot in the past few decades – but the approach here is to return to Joe's early Hat Art use of the Po concept – especially the way it presents ideas as provocation – which are then turned into improvisational fire by a group that includes Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Berman on cornet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, Dave Rempis on saxes, Tim Daisy on drums, and Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics. Both Vandermark and McPhee play tenor – and the music has an intensity that's amazing for such a large group of improvisers – further proof that all players are very well-matched. Okka Disk, 2007. Used ... $9.99
Some of the most beautiful, introspective work we've heard in years from Ken Vandermark – spare duets with pianist Pandelis Karayorgis – done in a mode that almost recalls the best experiments of Lee Konitz or Jimmy Giuffre from many years back! The sound is spare, but never too sleepy or lacking for inspiration – as Vandermark really opens up in this setting, matching the angular piano work of Karayorgis with some beautifully thoughtful lines on a variety of saxophones and clarinet. Some tunes have a slow-building approach that hangs the sound in the air almost magically – while others come on with a full attack, then slow things down for a bit of contemplation. As always with Vandermark, the influences of the music are given full credit throughout – and titles include "JCT", "United Forces Of One", "Lifgatowy", "Betwixt", "Title Without Year", and "Absolute Camel". One of the great ones from bassist Miroslav Vitous – a musician you might know from more atmospheric moments, but artist who could really be funky when he wanted! The album's got this righteous groove that really matches the energy of Miroslav's Magical Shepherd album from the same time – his warm, round acoustic bass tones right out front in the mix, but blended with loads of great electric elements too – including lots of wonderful keyboards, and some great reed lines from Jaroslav Jakubovic, a sharp-edged Eastern European player. The great Rimona Francis – of MPS fame – sings a bit on the record, in a cool style that's a bit like Flora Purim or Urzsula Dudziak – but most of the record is instrumental, and some of the cuts get nice and funky. Really great work from saxophone genius Kamasi Washington – music that's very different than the longform sounds of his epic sets – yet very beautiful too, and clearly showing off a whole new feather in Kamasi's mighty cap! The WHO here is a trio with Michel Wintsch on piano, Gerry Hemingway on drums, and Banz Oester on bass – a trio who make very different music with the songs of Duke Ellington! The vibe is very open and creative – very much in the spirit of Michel's best recordings of the past decade or so – but the real star of the set might be bassist Oester, as he handles his instrument in these really amazing ways – sometimes rhythmic, with qualities that set the pulse for the tunes – but other times with these unusual sounds that sometimes feel as if they're making up for the missing horn players that might have been in larger group recordings, and resonating wonderfully with the looser, freer lines of Wintsch on piano. Drummer Hemingway finds a way to space himself perfectly, and also adds in some really compelling moments on voice – on titles that include "The Mooche", "Black & Tan Fantasy", "Passion Flower", "Angelica", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "In A Sentimental Mood". Ace/BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
The reach of Miles Davis is plenty wide – as right from the start, the trumpeter was associating himself with some of the hippest young talent on the scene! Yet the apex of those associations may have come in the late 60s and early 70s, when the newly-electric Miles was experimenting in all sorts of new rhythms and instrumental combinations – and inviting a whole host of soon-to-be-legends to help him with his projects! This set is a great overview of some of those key contemporaries – and the way that they took new directions of their own, when away from Miles – some very much in the spirit of the Bitches Brew generation, others opening up in whole new frontiers of soul and spirit. The set features some really well-chosen tracks – a key who's who to this generation – and titles include "Sweet Pea" by Wayne Shorter, "In A Silent Way" by Joe Zawinul, "Common Mama" by Keith Jarrett, "Song Of The Wind (alt)" by Chick Corea, "In Search Of Truth" by Lonnie Liston Smith, "Arjen's Bag" by John McLaughlin, "Politician Man" by Betty Davis, "Uhuru Sasa" by Gary Bartz, "You'll Know When You Get There" by Herbie Hancock, and "Directions (16 December 1970 – first set)" by Miles Davis himself. ✨✧ Mario AdnetFrom The Heart ... CD
Adventure Music, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful Brazilian jazz from guitarist Mario Adnet – an artist with a sound that recalls some of our favorite work from the great indie fusion explosion in Brazil during the 80s! Mario plays acoustic guitar in a lightly dancing way that's initiated by bossa, but has stronger ties to the more complicated fusion modes of the post-Hermeto Pascoal years – never too over the top, but with a sense of sophistication and rich colors that make the album incredibly captivating, even in the mellower moments! As in some of Hermeto's most fluid work, there's a blend of soaring rhythms and more angular instrumentation going on here – and Mario's guitar is joined by flutes by Teco Cardoso, electric guitar by Ricardo Silveira, piano by Marcos Nimrichter, trombones by Vittor Santos, and trumpet by Jesse Sadoc – all working in shifting lineups from track to track. Joao Donato plays piano on one title, and a few others feature lightly jazzy vocals – and tracks include "From The Heart", "Ocean Range", "Paulistiana No 1", "Danca Negra", "Northern Landscape", "Music Inside", "Baiambe", and "Salsatlantic". Wally BadarouEchoes ... CD
Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
A tough record to peg – but a great one too! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! Tracks include "Endless Race", "Jungle", "Rain", "Keys", "Mambo", and "Canyons". (Soul, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Peter BrotzmannAlarm ... CD
FMP/Unheard Music Series, 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible record that's every bit as bracing as you might guess from the title – a real standout in Peter Brotzmann's catalog of the 1980s, and an album that returns him to the sheer raw power of his late 60s classics! Alarm is a live performance dominated by Brotzmann's composition of the same name – "Alarm" – a work of very unusual textures, based around graphic instructions for response to a nuclear emergency! Brotzmann has the larger group moving through waves and bursts of sound – carried off wonderfully by performers who include Toshinori Kondon on trumpet, Frank Wright and Willem Breuker on saxes, Alan Tomlinson on trombone, Harry Miller on bass, Louis Moholo on drums, and Alexander Von Schlippenbach on piano. The concert also features a performance of Frank Wright's "Jerry Sacem" – and was supposed to last longer, except that the building was evacuated in the middle of the show because of a bomb threat! ✨✧ Peter Brotzmann TrioFor Adolphe Sax ... CD
Unheard Music Series/Atavistic, 1967. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album of free jazz – Peter Brotzmann's first record, and a hard-driving set of material that blows away most avant jazz work from the US at the time! The album takes the energy of the ESP generation, and turns it up more than a few notches – as Brotzmann blows his head off on tenor and baritone, accompanied by Sven Ake Johansson on drums and Peter Kowald on bass. The title is a reference to the inventor of the saxophone – an instrument that Brotzmann pushes way to its limits here – at a level that Adolphe never would have expected! Titles include "For Adolphe Sax", "Sanity", and "Morning Glory". CD features the bonus track "Everything". CD

✨✧ Ann BurtonBlue Burton ... CD
Sony/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1967. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautifully gentle album from vocalist Ann Burton – recorded with sublime accompaniment from the trio of pianist Louis Van Dyke, a fragile and spare talent on the keys – and a perfect match for Burton on the mood of the album! Ann's vocals really come across with the mature grace that's always made us love her so much – and overall, the session's got a strength that goes far beyond most of her indie albums from later years. Most tunes are extremely spare – with bass stepping out first behind Ann's vocals, as Louis' piano lines sneak in with just a few quiet lines that slowly grow as the tune progresses – all in a style that's neither a cliche of older torch, nor the too-adult mode of more pop jazz vocal albums of the time. Piet Noordjik plays alto sax on a few of the tunes on the set – and titles include "You've Changed", "The Good Life", "Go Away Little Boy", "It's Easy To Remember", "But Not For Me", "He Was Too Good To Me", and "Sunny". Billy CobhamFunky Thide Of Sings ... CD
Atlantic/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Billy Cobham's always got something funky going on in his music – and this 70s classic for Atlantic Records has the drummer at the height of his powers – really mixing together jazz, rock, and funk impulses – all without some of the overindulgence of his more jamming records of the time! There's still some great trippy sounds at times – some fierce future jazz passages that have Billy's drums really propelling keyboards and guitar – but overall the tracks are short and focused, with a nice nod back to the kind of energy that Cobham brought to his sessions with other artists. One exception is the great "Moody Modes" – a sweet long electric track that almost feels like George Duke on MPS – alongside other cuts that include "A Funky Kind Of Thing", "Some Skunk Funk", and "Light At The End Of The Tunnel". ✨✧ Frank Cunimondo TrioSagittarius ... CD
Mondo/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagittarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! CD

A real gem of an album – one that we would have missed for sure, had it not been for the genius ears of the Unheard Music Series! Pianist Leo Cuypers leads a group that includes Willem Breuker, Han Bennink, and Arjen Gorter through a set of tracks that have an amazing blend of modernist playing, straight jazz swinging, and a touch of downright whimsy (but never too much, in the silly mode of some of Breuker's worse recordings.) Thoroughly satisfying, in a way we never expected! Titles include "Couperin", "Misha", "Be-Bach", and "Stefanus". CD

✨✧ Herbie HancockDeath Wish - Original Soundtrack ... CD
Columbia/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1974. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer 70s soundtrack from Herbie Hancock! The record takes the funky style that Herbie was cutting with the Headhunters, and blends it with some more sophisticated scoring that's top in the 70s action and blacksploitation modes – perfect for the dark theme of the movie's story. There's loads of funky bits with strings gliding over the top, and some more open-ended numbers with the sort of odd instrumentation and jazzy riffing that you'd find in Herbie's wilder numbers from the time. Cuts include "Death Wish", "Paint Her Mouth", "Rich Country", "Striking Back", and "Last Stop" – and side two is the full "Suite Revenge". CD

Freddie HubbardStraight Life ... CD
CTI/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1970. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
An amazing second CTI set from Freddie Hubbard – one that takes off nicely from Red Clay territory, and starts to hit an even funkier mode! The tracks here are all relatively long, with a huge amount of solo space for Freddie on trumpet, Joe Henderson on tenor, George Benson on guitar, and Herbie Hancock on piano. The title track "Straight Life" has a style that's quite searing and righteous at points – almost some of Freddie's boldest playing on record from the time. It's followed by an excellent take on Weldon Irvine's "Mr Clean" – one that's rompingly funky while still as righteous as the work on side long title track – played with some great electric piano from Herbie and sweet guitar lines from Benson. The set closes with a mellow take on "Here's That Rainy Day", played in a way that reminds us of Hubbard's more lyrical style – but still with plenty of CTI 70s overtones. CD

✨✧ Alexander Von Schlippenbach QuartetHunting The Snake ... CD
Unheard Music Series/Atavistic, 1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An obscure mid 70s session that features some stunning work by Schlippenbach's Quartet that included Evan Parker, Peter Kowald, and Paul Lovens. The material was recorded in the studios of Radio Bremen in Germany, and we have a feeling that this may be the first time the material was ever issued. The group plays with a ferocity that's hard to believe – as Schlippenbach moves like a demon up and down the keys, perpetually attacked by the soprano and tenor of Parker, amidst a rhythmic tumult laid down by Kowald's bass and the percussion and cymbals of Lovens. The work is pure and powerful – and completely free of any improvised music cliches. Titles include "Moonbeef", "Hunting The Snake", and "Glen Feshie". CD

VSOP (Herbie Hancock, et al)Live Under The Sky (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
Originally a Japanese-only session – and one of the best records ever by this legendary 70s jazz super-group – a real return to acoustic jazz roots, with a lineup that includes Herbie Hancock on piano, Wayne Shorter on tenor, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums! There's a lot of the sorts of energy that some of the players created when working with Miles Davis the decade before – but shaped with some of the soulfulness that Freddie Hubbard unleashed during his early CTI years – very welcome here, at a time when Hubbard was getting more electric touches on some of his albums. Herbie's great too – and the album ranks with his other great Japanese-only albums of the decade – really given a sense of creative freedom that didn't always happen with the more commercial drive that Columbia was pushing in the US. The whole thing's filled with lots of long modal numbers, strong soloing all around, and a top-shelf presentation of the material – on titles that include "Tear Drop", "Fragile", "One Of Another Kind", "Papa Oriente", "Domo", and "Pee Wee". This 2CD edition features 11 never-issued bonus tracks! CD

Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu".
