Wide Hive, 2018. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Compelling work from a variation on the Throttle Elevator Music combo – one who, like their predecessors, have a style that's often a bit more than conventional jazz – informed by the different strands of sounds that have come through the Wide Hive label that's been their home! The group features original songs and arrangements from Gregory Howe – who's definitely really opening himself up in recent years – and other group members include Matt Montgomery on piano and bass, and also songs and arrangements – plus Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Mike Ramos on guitar, and Mike Hughes on drums. Jekabson is as strong here as on his own albums as a leader – a rich voice who gives the album a sense of majesty at times, and a sense of direction at others – and titles include "Montecito Sunset", "Hum", "Time Is A Sphere", "Ergot", "Embarcadero Plaza", and "Ellipsis". East New York Ensemble De MusicAt The Helm ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... About December 20, 2019
An extremely righteous bit of soul jazz – originally issued in a very small pressing by Folkway Records, at a time when the label was doing some great underground recordings! The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. There's a nice Eastern feel to some of the tracks, and titles include "Mevlana", "Ti Ti", "Sun Flower", and "Bent El Jerusalem". (Global Grooves, Jazz) CD

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD

Albert AylerNew Grass/Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Late greatness from Albert Ayler – two Impulse albums back to back! New Grass is one of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe is a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. New Copy ... $16.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". CD

Brecker BrothersDon't Stop The Music ... CD
One Way, 1977. Used ... $16.99
A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's not afraid to go for the easy spots, the album's a lot more solid than an number of sound-a-like copycat LPs to come out at the time! There's more than enough interesting jazz funk numbers on here to keep you happy if you dig a soulful fusion groove, and with Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums, the beats are heavy enough in the right places. Titles include "Tabula Rasa", "Finger Lickin Good", "Funky Sea, Funky Dew", "Squids", "Petals", and "As Long As I've Got Your Love". CD

A wonderful meeting of jazz and poetry – as the Peter Brotzmann Tentet pays tribute to the work of Kenneth Patchen – mixing readings of Patchen's material with backings from the larger group! Section one of the CD features the Brotzmann group improvising under direction from the "lightbox" of Fred Lonberg-Holm, who is also in the group on cello – and then section two features more pronounced readings of Patchen's poetry, done by Mike Pearson in a style that really recalls Patchen's own voice on record. Players include Brotzmann, Mats Gustafsson, and Ken Vandermark on a variety of saxes and reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet and alto, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Kent Kessler on bass, and Michael Zerang on drums. ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". (Rock, Jazz) CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". CD

Tum (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A trio take on the music of Carla Bley – and a record that takes us back to a time when Bley's compositions were showing up in the repertoire of the hippest trios of the 60s – long before she ever got the chance to make bigger records on her own! That sense of openness that Bley brought to jazz is perfectly captured here – and very evenly balanced between the piano of Iro Haarla, the bass of Ulf Krokfors, and drums of Barry Altschul – the last of whom is maybe more part of Bley's generation, but somehow feels even more youthful here! Haarla's got maybe a sharper approach on the piano than some of Bley's interpreters in years past – but also knows when to lay back and let the bass and drums emerge a bit more too – on titles that include "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Batterie", "King Korn", "Intermission Music", "Around Again", "Start", and "Jesus Maria". Verve, 2002. Used ... $5.99
We have to admit, we had a lot of misgivings about this project before we gave it a chance and listened to it all the way through – but after all was said and done, we were quite impressed! While Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove and Michael Brecker all have the chops, recognition and reputations to make as many new recordings as they'd like, without resorting to pandering tributes, this project actually works beautifully and makes great sense. The group is rounded out by the elastic rhythms provided by John Patitucci (who seems to have graduated well beyond the sort of 6 string noodling he usually purveys) and Brian Blade. In most cases, we'd rather hear Miles doing Miles and Trane doing Trane, but this group manages to capture both the dark, brooding beauty of Miles' music and the deeper, soulful vein that Coltrane mined. Herbie sounds the best we've heard in ages and the highlight of this live set is a medley of Miles' "So What" and Coltrane's "Impressions", while the rest of the set is made up mostly of originals (2 more Coltrane pieces, "Naima" and "Tansition" are included) composed by members of the group like Hancock's "The Sorcerer" and Hargrove's "The Poet". Joe HendersonLush Life – The Music Of Billy Strayhorn ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used ... $4.99
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD

Krzysztof KomedaAstigmatic – The Music Of Komeda ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1966. New Copy ... $14.99
Possibly the most fantastic recording ever from the greatest talent of Polish jazz! The material was recorded in 1965, in the years before Komeda followed Roman Polanski to the US to score his films like Rosemary's Baby – and it's one of the greatest modernist albums of the 60s jazz scene on either side of the Atlantic – a record we'd rank right up there with the best from Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Joe Harriott, or other forward-thinking talents of the generation! The style is incredibly modernist, but with none of the over-indulgences that later plagued the Polish prog-oriented scene, and with none of the non-jazz influences that could stop a session like this dead in the water – and instead, the band grooves mightily in a blend of sharp edges and modal rhythms – a tremendous blend that makes the album as appealing to fans of more soulful jazz as it does to those looking for bold modernist statements. The quintet features 2 of Poland's other key jazz figures from the time – Tomasz Stanko on trumpet and Zbigniew Namyslowski on alto sax – and other members include Gunter Lenz on bass and Rune Carlson on drums. Titles are all Komeda originals, all nice and long – and include "Astigmatic", "Kattorna", and "Svantetic". CD

GAD (Poland), 1967. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic lost slice of work from the legendary Krzysztof Komeda – and a set that's quite different than some of his avant jazz classics of the 60s! This album's still got a lot of jazz in the mix, but there's also a lot of the "sweet" mentioned in the title – mostly in these cool bossa currents and breezy elements, which recall more of the Italian soundtrack style of the time than some of Komeda's more famous film work with Roman Polanski. Instrumentation is often focused on an isolated piano line, or a bit of flute – but there's also some great bossa nova percussion, and some cool wordless vocals at times too – all with a mixture of warmth and complexity that really keeps things interesting throughout. Titles include "Rio", "Palac Copacabana", "Papieros", "Nowy Jork II", "Ciala Kuliste", "Prywatka", "Bar Wenecja", and "Final" – and the CD also features five more bonus tracks too! Joachim KuhnBold Music ... CD
MPS (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $22.99
Bold music, indeed – a tremendous blend of avant garde jazz and groovier moments from pianist Joachim Kuhn! The style is a great illustration of the two key poles of the MPS label at the end of the 60s – the company's willingness to take a chance on freer jazz artists, but also its ability to sometimes focus those artists in a bit more, and get them to record tunes with a strong rhythmic pulse and nice sense of groove. Kuhn's working here not only on acoustic piano, but also alto sax, gong, antelope horn, and more – and other members of the group include JF Jenny-Clarke on bass and cello, Jacques Thollot on percussion, and Stu Martin on drums and bells! Titles include the groover "Depression & Illusion", plus "Third World War", "Message From Upstairs", "The Child Out There Somewhere", "Vampires Castle", and "My Friend The Yogi". CD

No Business (Lithuania), 1978/1979. New Copy 2 CDs ... $19.99
Two 70s albums from overlooked reedman Peter Kuhn – back to back here in a single sweet set! First up is Livin Right – a set that was originally broadcast live on New York radio in 1978, and which really captures the openly creative spirit of the loft jazz generation – as Peter Kuhn plays b-flat and bass clarinet alongside a wonderful group that features two trumpeters – Arthur Williams and Toshinori Kondo, each coming out of a different speaker – plus the great William Parker on bass and Denis Charles on drums! The bass and drums really set the tone here – as they rumble and bristle beautifully, almost like they're setting these little fires – which are then fanned brightly by the clarinet and trumpets – on titles that include "Chi", "Red Tape", and "Manteca Long Gone Axistential". The second CD features a live performance from 1979 – with very freewheeling work by Peter Kuhn on b-flat and bass clarinet, plus some tenor too – really opening up alongside some excellent drums from Dennis Charles. Charles' contributions are great – and very thoughtful – and all tracks are long, with titles that include "Headed Home", "Drum Dharma", "Stigmata", and "Axistential". CD

Moserobie (Sweden), 2018. New Copy ... $18.99
A beautiful tribute to the too-short career of Swedish trumpeter Anders Garstedt – a musician who never achieved the global fame he deserved, but who really left his mark upon a recent generation of Scandinavian musicians! This set is served up by some of that generation – a lineup that includes Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor and soprano sax, Joakim Milder on tenor, Mathias Landaes on piano, Filip Auguston on bass, and Fredrik Rundqvist on drums – all performing original compositions by Anders that shimmer with beauty and imagination! The intertwining of horns is especially nice, especially in the slower progression of moments – and there's a strength to Garstedt's writing that makes us hope there's more gems like these in his songbook. Titles include "Ades Gased", "Gone For Good", "C", "#27 1/2", "Waltz #2", and "F Minor". CD

Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1957. Used ... $9.99
A seminal album that defined the fresh sound of a whole new generation in jazz – that "third stream" movement that was different from the cool jazz of the west coast, and the fire of New York! The style here follows that same mix of jazz and higher-concept elements you'd hear on other Modern Jazz Quartet albums for Atlantic – but the music is expanded here with some great help from outside parties too. The Jimmy Giuffre trio join the quartet on most of side one – adding in Jimmy's snakey clarinet and Jim Hall's fluid guitar lines for a really fresh take on the MJQ groove. The remainder of the album brings in the Beaux Arts String Quartet – who shade in the mix of vibes and piano with these dark strains that are really beautiful – and bring even more drama than usual to the music. Titles include "Da Capo", "Fine", "Exposure", "Sketch", and "Conversation". CD

The meeting of two key modern jazz talents in the late 50s third stream of jazz – heard on material pulled from three different Atlantic albums recorded at the Music Inn during 1956! The core of the set features the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre blowing alongside the Modern Jazz Quartet – in a spacious style that's very much in the spirit of Jimmy's own loosely-crafted groups of the time, and which makes surprisingly gentle use of piano, drums, and vibes next to his own gentle phrasing on clarinet. 2 of the 5 tracks with the MJQ add in Giuffre trio members Jim Hall and Ralph Pena – and titles for all include "A Fugue For Music Inn", "Serenade", "Fun",j "Da Capo", and "Fine". Added to these are 4 more titles that have Giuffre in the shifting company of other all-star players on tunes that take on a more traditional nature overall – longer jamming tracks that feature Rex Stewart, Pee Wee Russell, Teddy Charles, and Herbie Mann on titles that include "Blues In E Flat", "In A Mellotone", "The Quiet Time", and "Body & Soul". The last 3 tracks on the set return us to the Modern Jazz Quartet – working here on their own – on tracks that include "2 Degrees East 3 Degrees West", "Variation No 1 On God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Oh Bess Where's My Bess". Kathyrn's as great a singer as she is an instrumentalist – and the album offers equal parts of her talents – stepping out with a style that's often a bit funky at the bottom, with an electric mixture of flute, guitars, percussion, and bass. Gene Perla produced the record, and it's got a fair bit of choppy grooves that are right up there in the best PM Records mode – more proof that the Canadian scene could groove nicely when it wanted. The album shows a depth that we never expected – a richly instrumental mode that's only touched by vocals on a few songs – and which is mostly territory explored by Meshell on bass, along with other jazz players that include Michael Cain on keyboards, Jack De Johnette on drums, and sax work from Kenny Garrett, Don Byron, Oliver Lake, and Oran Coltrane! 3 of the album's 8 tracks feature vocals – by Sabina, Cassandra Wilson, and Lalah Hathaway – and the tunes are all long, languid, and laidback – drifting along through some really moody territory. Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Titles include "Balm In Gilead", "Borderline", "Driva Man", "Baltimore", "Everything Must Change", "Freedom Day", "Be My Husband", "Mississippi Goddamn", and "Both Sides Now". CD

Palm Unit began their recorded career with a great tribute to French jazz legend Jef Gilson – but here, they maybe sound even more amazing – in an album that takes on the tunes of bassist Henri Texier, but with results that are completely the group's own! Bass definitely figures in the music – as organist Frederic Ecoffier plays some very cool bass synth too – but the music has this warm, organic flow that's very much like some of the more unusual albums that Texier recorded in the 70s – music that certainly has jazz at the core, but which is very open to embracing other sounds too – in a lineup that also features Lionel Martin on tenor, Philippe Pipon Garcia on drums, and Abraham Mansfarroll on percussion. The drums and percussion dance along in these wonderful rhythms with the keyboards and electric bassbits – and the tenor tops things off with a very soulful vibe. The set features one track with vocals – "Le Piroguer" – and other titles include "Homme Rogue", "Mad Nomad", "Don't Buy Ivory Anymore", "Quand Le Blues S'En Ira", and "Mr Freeman". CD

Bold genius from Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko – a memorial tribute to the recently-departed Krzysztof Komeda – Stanko's musical mentor and frequent partner during the 60s! The work builds strongly on the angular modes explored by Komeda during the Astigmatic years – a stark, staccato mode that was as inventive and compelling as anything that Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, or Joe Harriott were doing at the time. Stanko's kept the Komeda spirit running very strongly in this set – using pulsating rhythms at the bottom to drive a set of longish tunes with full force, as freer solos cascade over the top with intense energy and amazing focus. The group's a quintet – with Zbigniew Seifert on alto sax and Janusz Muniak on tenor – and titles include "The Ambusher", "Infinitely Small", "Cry", and "Music For K". CD

ECM (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A real standout in the classic catalog of ECM – not only because the record's got a slightly different inspiration than most, but also because it seems to unlock some especially beautiful moments from players who could sound different in other settings on the label! As the title indicates, the tunes here all take inspiration from the poetry of Robert Creeley – but never in a mode that's got the usual jazz meets poetry approach – as Sheila Jordan sings the lyrics when they appear, with a sense of her own power that's very different than a more standard recitation – and which, to us, really feels a lot like her great vocal performances with Steve Kuhn for ECM. Kuhn is also in the group on piano, and other musicians include David Liebman on saxes, Lyle Mays on keyboards, and Bob Moses on drums – all working under the superb leadership of bassist Steve Swallow – who really outdid himself with the depth of feeling in this project. Titles include "Colors", "In The Fall", "She Was Young", "Some Echoes", "Ice Cream", and "You Didn't Think". CD

Some of the most beautiful, introspective work we've heard in years from Ken Vandermark – spare duets with pianist Pandelis Karayorgis – done in a mode that almost recalls the best experiments of Lee Konitz or Jimmy Giuffre from many years back! The sound is spare, but never too sleepy or lacking for inspiration – as Vandermark really opens up in this setting, matching the angular piano work of Karayorgis with some beautifully thoughtful lines on a variety of saxophones and clarinet. Some tunes have a slow-building approach that hangs the sound in the air almost magically – while others come on with a full attack, then slow things down for a bit of contemplation. As always with Vandermark, the influences of the music are given full credit throughout – and titles include "JCT", "United Forces Of One", "Lifgatowy", "Betwixt", "Title Without Year", and "Absolute Camel". One of the most dynamic Christmas albums you'd ever hope to buy – mostly because the approach here is based around the frenetic jazz style of the legendary reedman Albert Ayler! The group here is the Witches & Devils group of saxophonist Mars Williams – a combo who take their name from one of Ayler's most famous tunes – and players include Josh Berman on cornet, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Kent Kessler on bass, Brian Sandstrom on bass and guitar, and Steve Hunt on drums – a Chicago lineup who do a great job here of folding together bits of Ayler's music with familiar Christmas themes – all at a level that's completely mindblowing! The set's definitely not one you'll play when grandma's over for dinner on the 25th of December – but it is a wonderful statement from the always-vibrant Chicago scene – with titles that include "O Tannebaum Spirits 12 Days Of Xmas", "Angels We Have Heard On High Omega Is Alpha", and "Ma'Oz Tzur Truth Is Marching In Jingle Bells". Hall's had a recent legacy of work that includes both small group performances and large ensemble activity – and he really manages to bring that all into play here, as the set has this compositional vision that swings nicely between tight groovers and larger ideas – held strong by a quintet that includes Troy Roberts on tenor, Josh Allen on bass, Kyle Swan on drums, and either Martin Bejerano or Tal Cohen on piano. The cover, title, and everything else about the outside appearance of the record is somewhat understated – but musically, the whole thing bursts out nicely and really stays strong all the way through – on titles that include "Wanderer", "Visions & Dreams", "Brother Spiro", "Apehlion", "Tones For Jones", and "Allure". Brilliant music from this Chicago collective – a group who initially turned their talents to resurrecting sounds from the Windy City underground of the postwar years, but who now make their own bold statement of identity! There's a focus here that we really love – an evolution past free jazz modes, into a more defined sense of sound – one that's rich in compositional structure, but which also still lets the players really burn with fires of their own! The core group features great horns from Greg Ward on alto sax and Tim Haldeman on tenor – plus leader Mike Reed on drums and a bit of melodica, and Jason Roebke on bass. Guests include Jeff Parker on guitar, Jeb Bishop on trombone, and David Boykin on tenor – and titles include "VS #1", "It's Enough", "About Us", "Big & Fine", "Flat Companion", "Big Stubby", "Under The Influence Of Lunar Objects", and "Days Fly By (With Ruby)". 482 Music, 2012. Used ... $11.99
A great one from Mike Reed and his People Places & Things group – a clear, crisp statement of Chicago modernism at its best – not just modes from Reed's own generation, but from the 50s and 60s as well! Reed's an amazing player on his own – but we especially love the way that he's gone back into Windy City tradition, and found a way to re-introduce a special blend of Chicago jazz – that crucial pre-AACM, post-bop style that would often swing, but have really freewheeling solos too – a mode that really went onto influence American jazz in general once Chicagoans moved onto the New York scene in the 60s. The horns here are key to the approach – really deft work on alto from Greg Ward and tenor from Tim Haldeman – plus some great guest cornet from Josh Berman. Most tracks are piano-less, which allows for even freer reed work – but Craig Taborn guests on piano on two numbers – and the great bass of Jason Roebke holds the set together solidly throughout. Titles include versions of Roscoe Mitchell's "Old" and John Jenkins' "Sharon" – plus the tracks "Warming Down", "The Ephemeral Words Of Ruth", "House Of Three Smiles", and "The Lady Has A Bomb". CD

The approach here reminds us a bit of Ornette Coleman on Atlantic Records – and despite the presence of Matthew Shipp on piano on a few tracks, the format is somewhat familiar – almost a harmelodic wrapping of bass, drums, and reeds – from a core quartet that also includes Jason Roebke on bass, Tim Haldeman on tenor, and Greg Ward on alto. Rare work from reedman Andrew White – who claims to "bootleg himself" with the release of this album! The CD features material from two different performances recorded in New York during the 80s – both with sidemen who White claims are all now quite famous and "too expensive" to name, and who provide him with strong, soulful backing while he steps out on some of his beautifully-blown solos! White's a tremendous talent on the alto – strongly expressive, very spiritual – always aware of the farther reaches, but always somehow swinging too – a blend that really comes through in the live music here. The set features versions of "Night Dreamer", "Big Nick", "Crescent", and "Pristine" – plus a few shorter tracks – and it comes with copious notes by White, penned at a level that definitely lets you know where he's coming from! Here, White offers up 30 version of his classic "Theme" – a tune he first created in 1963, and which is presented here on recordings from the 70s up through the present, all with White in different modes, on different instruments – a variety of saxes, solo piano, and even some duets between sax and piano – plus larger groups too. Like most of Andrew's self-produced records, the whole thing is pretty incredible – but in a way that's very different than the usual jazz release. CD

Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyThings Are Getting Better ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1958. Used ... $5.99
An album that definitely lives up to its title – given the great change and evolution in the style of Cannonball Adderley's music – definitely pointed towards the soul jazz fame to come in the 60s! The group here has Adderley's alto in the company of some all-stars who may not be his regular group, but who definitely help keep the whole thing at a top-shelf level throughout – a quintet that features Milt Jackson on vibes, Wynton Kelly on piano, Percy Heath on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. There's still a few echoes of Cannon's earlier bop recordings, but the sound is also moving towards the new modes to come – especially on the classic title cut "Things Are Getting Better". Other cuts include "Just One Of Those Things", "Sounds For Sid", "Groovin High", "Serves Me Right", and "Blues Oriental". CD

Cannonball Adderley with Bossa Rio SextetCannonball's Bossa Nova ... CD
Capitol/Riverside, 1962. Used ... $4.99
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. It's here now, though, and the record's a real treat – especially at this price! Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". Plus, the CD also features bonus single versions of "Corcovado" and "Clouds"! CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi & Lew TabackinToshiko Akiyoshi & Lew Tabackin – The Eternal Duo (CD & Blu-ray) ... CD
Sony (Japan), 2019. New Copy CD & Blu-ray ... $69.99
A really fantastic tribute to a duo who led one of the hippest big bands of the 70s – performing here in a very intimate and stripped-down mode! The set's a live one – and features the legendary Toshiko Akiyoshi on piano and Lew Tabackin on tenor sax and flute – working just as a duo, but in a really evocative way – as they make magic with some of the songs that were first composed by Toshiko for the legendary big band the duo led together. There's also some nice spoken passages – in Japanese, unfortunately – as Toshiko recalls their many years together – and the package also features a blu-ray version of the performance, with even more music in the visual portion. Titles include "The Village", "Lady Liberty", "Eulogy", "Long Yellow Road", "Tales Of A Courtesan", "Tsuki No Sabaku", "Hangin Loose", and "Hope – from Hiroshima Rising". CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandInsights (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
Always-amazing work from the team of pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi and reedman Lew Tabackin – and a set that may well be one of the ensemble's most ambitious records to date – given that side two features a long, complicated suite that has roots in older Japanese musical styles! The balance here is great – side one has the kind of swinging shorter (although still long by most standards) numbers that the group could make explode with color and imagination – and side two features the long "Minamata" suite, which has vocals from a young Monday Michiru, and from singer Hisao Kanze. Other tracks include "Studio J", "Transience", and "Sumie" – and the lineup here features most of the group's key members of the 70s – including the great Gary Foster on reeds! CD

Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big BandTales Of A Courtesan (Oriantan) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
RCA (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
Toshiko Akiyoshi really took off as a jazz musician in the 70s – already a great pianist known for her bop-like dexterity in the 50s, a compelling soloist and songwriter with her modern sound in the 60s, and a hell of a talent at the helm of a series of amazing big band records with reedman Lew Tabackin! Akiyoshi emerges as a stunning composer, and a great arranger too – able to balance the individual solo voices of the members of the group, while also letting the whole thing open up and soar – bold colors that are cut through nicely by her own solo work in the set! In addition to saxes and flutes from Tabackin, the set also features more saxes from Gary Foster, Bill Perkins, and Dick Spencer – plus trombone from Bill Reichenbach and Britt Woman, and trumpets from Bobby Shew and Mike Price. All tunes are Akiyoshi originals – and titles include "Interlude", "Village", "Road Time Shuffle", and "Tales Of A Courtesan". CD

Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD
