Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Other Dimensions In Music with Fay VictorKaiso Stories ... CD
Silkheart (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Vocalist Fay Victor joins the wonderful group Other Dimensions In Music – for a performance that really helps deepen the sound and knock the whole thing out of the park! Make no mistake, we already love the instrumental side of the group – Roy Campbell on trumpets and other instruments, Daniel Carter on saxes and flute, William Parker on bass, and Charles Downs on drums and percussion – all shifting instruments, and working together in a mode that's very strongly in a legacy that runs from the AACM through the loft jazz generation! But the presence of Victor's voice really adds a whole new layer – contributions from various texts, which are spoken and sung, but in ways that are as unconventional as the music that Campbell and Carter make on their horns. Titles include "An Open Letter", "We Is We Trini", "Saltfish Refried", "Three Friends Advised", "Kitch Goes Home", and "John Gilman Wants Tobacco". CD

Jon Appleton & Don CherryHuman Music (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flying Dutchman/Water, 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
A fantastic record – and a really mindblowing mix of spiritual jazz and electronics! The set is an amazing collaboration between trumpeter Don Cherry and pioneering electronic musician Jon Appleton – one of those rare meetings of the minds that goes far deeper than you'd expect! On the set, Cherry's trumpet, flute, and percussion is heavily processed by Appleton – often in ways that are organic enough to keep with Cherry's other experiments of the time, and with the "Human Music" title of the set – but sometimes with the more playful feel of Appleton's other music from the time. The mix of electronics and improvisation is amazing – years ahead of its time, and with a haunting sound that works perfectly against Cherry's style of restrained spiritualism. The LP's got 4 long tracks – "Boa", "Oba", "Abo", and "Bao" – all recorded live in the studio! CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Don" and "Jon". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD

Albert AylerMusic Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1970. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
One of the last records made by avant sax legend Albert Ayler – a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

✨✧ Chet Baker & Bud Shank/Leith StevensTheme Music From The James Dean Story (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1956. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Although the initial release of this music was a cheap attempt to cash in on the tragic fame of the late James Dean, this 1956 session was also one of the nicest big band dates to come out of the Pacific Jazz catalog of the 1950s! Chet Baker and Bud Shank are the featured soloists of the set – and the group's conducted by Johnny Mandel and Bill Holman, both excellent arrangers with a strong feel for soundtrack-oriented material of this sort. Tommy Sands sings vocals on a version of "Let Me Be Loved", which is the only standard on the set – as the rest of the tracks are originals by the great Leith Stevens. The band's filled with other west coasters that you'll recognize – and titles include "The Movie Star", "Jimmy's Theme", "The Search", "Lost Love", and "Rebel At Work". CD

Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (3CD set) ... CD
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 3CD ... $25.99
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! CD

✨✧ John Carter & Bobby BradfordSelf Determination Music ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Titles include "The Sunday Afternoon Jazz Blues Society", "The Eye Of The Storm", "Loneliness", and "Encounter". CD

Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $19.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Clarke Boland SextetMusic For The Small Hours ... CD
EMI/Rearward (Italy), 1967. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the hippest albums ever from the team of Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland – a unique small combo session that's even groovier than their famous big band work! The setting is wonderful – Clarke on drums, Boland on piano, and a sextet lineup that includes Sahib Shihab on flute, Fats Sadi on vibes, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Joe Harris on percussion – all players who know each other well, and groove together as one amazing unit on the set! The tunes here are lyrical and lively, modal and moving, and still some of the freshest jazz cut on the European scene of the 60s – music that's having a huge impact these days in the club jazz underground. Shihab's flute work is sublime, especially next to Sadi's vibes – and Harris' added percussion gives a number of the cuts a bit of a Latin kick that's totally great! There's a bit of vocals on the set, and titles include "Ebony Samba", "Tin Tin Deo", "Potter's Crossing", "Wives & Lovers", "Ensadinado", "Lorraine", "Day By Day", "Love Hungry", and "Please Don't Leave". ✨✧ Philip Cohran & The Artistic Heritage EnsembleMalcolm X Memorial (A Tribute In Music) (LP sleeve edition) ... CD
Zulu/Katalyst, 1968. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant tribute to the late Malcolm X – served up by Chicago's legendary Artistic Heritage Ensemble! The record's got an even farther-reaching sound than the group's self-titled effort – a flowing style that unfolds as their tribute to Malcolm rolls on – starting spare and earthy at first, then picking up a fuller, prouder, much more righteous groove as things really get going! As before, there's plenty of heavy percussion at the bottom of most tracks – topped by complicated horn passages that often verge on the exotic – and which have a tremendously captivating sound. The ensemble's led by the great Phil Cohran, who played with Sun Ra for a bit, and also plays cornet on the record – the rest of the group includes Charles Williams, Don Myrick, Louis Satterfield, Pete Cosey, Henry Gibson, Willie Woods, and Aaron Dodd – a lineup of players who also worked with Sun Ra, The Pharoahs, and Earth Wind & Fire! The LP's a suite of 4 tracks dedicated to Malcolm X, each capturing a period of his life, "Malcolm Little", "Detroit Red", "Malcolm X", and "El Hajj Malik El Shabazz". CD

Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1977. Used ... $14.99
A great little set – way more than you might think from the cover! Ostensibly, this one's a cash-in album for the mid 70s Star Wars soundtrack craze – but since it's handled by Ellis, it's got a surprisingly funky feel, with many tracks that recall his own great soundtrack work of the time. In fact, the album only has 2 tracks from the Star Wars soundtrack – despite the fact that the logo for the movie is displayed largely on the cover – and all other tracks are originals by Ellis, handled with a sweet mix of electric funk and funky jazz soloing! Lots of nice keyboards, and titles include "Star Wars", "Orion's Sword", "Eros", "Lyra", "Ursa", "Vulcan", "Crypton" and "Arcturas". CD

Equistar, 2015. New Copy ... $6.99
A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". CD

Collectables, 1957/1958. Used ... $4.99
Another nice 2-in-1 from Collectables that brings to light some fantastic jazz from the Atlantic catalog! The album Jimmy Giuffre 3 is beautiful trio material by Jimmy Giuffre, featuring his group with Ralph Pena on bass and Jim Hall on guitar. The sound is out of this world, and the notes just hang lightly in air, interacting with each other in a way that's freed from the rhythmic constraints of the typical piano/drum pulse. Titles include "Voodoo", "Train & The River", "My All", "Crawdad Suite", and "Two Kinds Of Blues". The Music Man is a bit more standard, and features Giuffre leading a large group (with Al Cohn, Joe Wilder, Art Farmer, and others) through tracks from the Music Man score – like "It's You", "Wells Fargo", "Gary, Indiana", and "Till There Was You". It's goofy, but with some nice solo moments. 20 tracks in all, and full reproductions of the original cover art. CD

Jimmy GiuffreMusic For People, Birds, Butterflies & Mosquitoes ... CD
Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
Overlooked 70s work from Jimmy Giuffre – a hip trio session that has all the free elements of his earlier recordings, but possibly an even greater focus on tone! Jimmy plays a range of reeds here – tenor, clarinet, and flute – and he works with bass and drum accompaniment, but often in a really gentle way that allows his own solo energy to dictate the tunes – coming out in space that's boldly soulful on the tenor, yet more fragile and intimate on the flute – kind of a cross between more expressive avant work and some of the more spiritual tones of the time. The tenor tunes are especially great – kind of opening a new chapter for Giuffre's career – and titles include "The Bird", "Mosquito Dance", "The Chanting", "The Butterfly", "Dervish", "Phoenix", and "Night Dance". Tum (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
A trio take on the music of Carla Bley – and a record that takes us back to a time when Bley's compositions were showing up in the repertoire of the hippest trios of the 60s – long before she ever got the chance to make bigger records on her own! That sense of openness that Bley brought to jazz is perfectly captured here – and very evenly balanced between the piano of Iro Haarla, the bass of Ulf Krokfors, and drums of Barry Altschul – the last of whom is maybe more part of Bley's generation, but somehow feels even more youthful here! Haarla's got maybe a sharper approach on the piano than some of Bley's interpreters in years past – but also knows when to lay back and let the bass and drums emerge a bit more too – on titles that include "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Batterie", "King Korn", "Intermission Music", "Around Again", "Start", and "Jesus Maria". Impulse, 1969. Used ... $6.99
One of the most beautiful albums that Charlie Haden ever recorded – and if he only ever appeared on one record in his life, we'd still love him tremendously for this one! The album has a feel that's very much in keeping with both the "liberation" and "orchestra" in the title – "liberation", in that the music is filled with inspiration from South American sources, and has a strongly political feel at times; and "orchestra" because the group here is somewhat large, and filled with a tremendous array of expressive players – including Gato Barbieri on tenor, Dewey Redman on alto and tenor, Don Cherry on cornet and flutes, Michael Mantler on trumpet, Roswell Rudd on trombone, Robert Northern on French horn, Paul Motian and Andrew Cyrille on percussion, Carla Bley on piano, and Perry Robinson on clarinet. Haden leads these disparate talents through a set of tremendously focused music – filled with as many ideas as it is with a sense of humanity and soul – all to brilliantly point the way forward for the new sound of Impulse Records in the years after Coltrane's death! Titles include the classic "Song For Che", plus Ornette's "War Orphans", Carla Bley's "The Interlude", and "Song Of The United Front", by Hans Eisler, and with words by Brecht! CD

A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's playing in group settings – not trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet would certainly have a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s. Titles on this second volume include "Four In One", "Ask Me Now", "Criss Cross", "Skippy", "Hornin In", "Sixteen", and "Let's Cool One" – and this new version features a total of 18 tracks with great remastering and some rare alternate takes! The rest of the group is equally great – with Ray Copeland on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – all coming together with Monk to craft a perfect set of tunes that are virtually the definition of "modern jazz". Titles include "Abide With Me", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule With Nellie", and "Epistrophy". CD features 2 bonus tracks – alternates of "Off Minor" and "Crepuscule With Nellie". CD

Shanachie, 2005. Used ... Just Sold Out!
An incredible departure for Meshell Ndegeocello – a jazz-based project with a sound that's different than any of her other work! The album shows a depth that we never expected – a richly instrumental mode that's only touched by vocals on a few songs – and which is mostly territory explored by Meshell on bass, along with other jazz players that include Michael Cain on keyboards, Jack De Johnette on drums, and sax work from Kenny Garrett, Don Byron, Oliver Lake, and Oran Coltrane! 3 of the album's 8 tracks feature vocals – by Sabina, Cassandra Wilson, and Lalah Hathaway – and the tunes are all long, languid, and laidback – drifting along through some really moody territory. Titles include "Mu-Min", "Al Falaq 113", "Dance Of The Infidel", "The Chosen", "Luqman", and "Heaven". (Neo Soul, Jazz) CD

New Orleans Jazz OrchestraSongs – The Music Of Allen Toussaint ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
A really nice take on the music of New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a record that sets things up in new jazz-based arrangements that open up whole new sides of the songs! You'll know most of the numbers here – especially if you've got any of Toussaint's classic albums or productions in your collection – yet the approach is nicely different, with rich horn shadings that make for a very different vibe – but which still get vocal treatment on most numbers, from singers who include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Philip Manuel, and Gerald French. Adonis Rose handles drums with a nice Nola groove, and also directed the whole thing too – and titles include "Working In The Coal Mine", "Southern Nights", "It's Raining", "Zimple Street", "Ruler Of My Heart", "Java", and "Gert Town". Contemporary/OJC, 1957. Used ... $9.99
Red Norvo's dragged his vibes out into a field of wildflowers – and while we hate to think what that's done to the sound of his instrument (not to mention his hayfever), we can definitely say that the album's a groovy treat from the decade when Red was turning out some of his finest music ever! The "Music To Listen To" title is a nod towards some of the mood music sets of the time – but that quality is here in title only, as the album's definitely an all-jazz affair – one that expands out the original Norvo trio sound to sextet formation – getting some wonderful sounds from Buddy Collette on flute, Bill Smith on clarinet, Barney Kessell on guitar, Red Mitchell on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – all players who can hit the fresh, modern tones that Norvo's known for, but who also help things swing nicely overall. The flute/clarinet mix is especially sweet – a fluttering, bird-like sort of reed effect – and titles include "Divertimento", "Red Sails", "Poeme", "Rubricity", and "The Red Broom". CD

Resilience, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. Titles include "Balm In Gilead", "Borderline", "Driva Man", "Baltimore", "Everything Must Change", "Freedom Day", "Be My Husband", "Mississippi Goddamn", and "Both Sides Now". CD

A really wonderful album from Enrico Pieranunzi, maybe one of our favorite albums from the pianist – but that probably also has a lot to do with the material! The songs are all compositions by the legendary Wayne Shorter – some from his earlier years, some from a time when his sound was darker and more dynamic – all brought together here in a warm flow that really transforms the tunes, and does a great job of linking together two generations of Shorter's music! The record has that gentle mix of boldness and space that Pieranunzi delivers when he's at his best – which is definitely the case here – and support is from Hein Van de Geyn on bass and Hans Van Oosterhout on drums – on titles that include "Capricorn", "ESP", "Infant Eyes", "Nefertiti", "Pinocchio", "Wildflower", and "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On". A pretty heady little set, from a pretty heady trio of talents – drummer Bobby Previte, guitarist Nels Cline, and keyboardist Jamie Saft – who works here on Hammond, Fender Rhodes, and mini-moog! The music is very dark and often distorted – as if the other two musicians have borrowed some of Cline's love of effects, which are often used to deepen and abstract his sound – which is definitely the case here, as the music builds in waves of fuzz that bring a very progressive feel to the record – a bit like some of those great early 70s experimental sets that were equal parts jazz and psych. Soaring spirits and joyous jazz-based expression – an overlooked treasure from Pharoah Sanders – and proof that his work on Impulse Records just kept on getting better and better! The style here is a bit tighter than some of the previous Impulse albums – no side-long tracks here – but the overall feel is also almost a bit more organic too – with lots of rootsy percussion and earthy sounds in the mix, all emanating from instruments in ways that are quite unique! The core group features Pharoah on tenor, soprano sax, and flute – alongside James Brance on flute, Joe Bonner on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Norman Connors on drums – plus percussion from the trio of Badal Roy, James Mtume, and Lawrence Killian. Percussion bits and vocalizations drift in and out of most tracks – giving them a rich sense of color and tone, even when the grooves are a bit more direct! Impulse (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! Zoot Sims & Bob BrookmeyerTonite's Music Today/Whooeeee (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Storyville/Muzak (Japan), 1956. New Copy 2CDs ... $24.99
Two great Storyville sessions – back to back in a single set! First up is Tonite's Music Today – an early Storyville Records gem from these two budding modernists – featuring a quartet with Zoot Sims on tenor, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, and Hank Jones on piano and a bit of celeste – a really fantastic group that cuts right to the core of the new ideas that Sims and Brookmeyer were exploring on their horns! Bob's got that sharp sound that really set his valve trombone work apart from the rest – maybe a bit more bite in his tone, too – which could be encouraged by Zoot's tenor, which is at its raspy best in this setting! The Storyville sessions by some artists often get eclipsed by more widely circulated discs on bigger labels – but this is essential early Zoot sims, and Brookmeyer's work is a nice bonus – on titles that include "Mr Moon", "The Chant", "Zoot's Tune", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Bobby's Tune", and "Blues". Next is Whooeeee – a wonderful small combo set from this unusual team – put together in ways that are somewhere between the Bob Brookmeyer/Stan Getz pairings of the early 50s, and some of Zoot Sims' work for the Dawn label! Zoot's horn is maybe a bit sharper, and bolder than on his Dawn sides, though – that quality that really made him a favorite with hip listeners of the 50s, and which maybe even beats some of the Stan Getz work of the period – matched by Brookmeyer's impeccable work on valve trombone, which is more straightforward and swinging here than usual! The group also features Hank Jones on piano, Bill Crow on bass, and Jo Jones on drums – and titles include "The King", "Whoo-eeee", "Morning Fun", "Box Cars", and "Snake Eyes". CD

A tough record to peg – but a great one too! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! Magic Music (Germany), 1966. Used ... $18.99
One of the best non-Saturn Sun Ra albums of the 60s – material recorded live on a tour of New York colleges in 1966, and very much in a spirit that captures the Arkestra at their best! Longer tracks are juxtaposed nicely with shorter ones – in a way that has the group running very outside one minute, yet stepping soulfully back to the center the next – never schizophrenicly, but in a mode that really displays the full range of energy pulsing in the group. Interesting instrumentation on the set includes Ra on clavoline, plus Carl Nimrod on the beautiful-sounding "sun horn" – and other players include Marshall Allen on alto, John Gilmore on tenor, Pat Patrick on baritone, and James Jacson on log drum and flute. Sun RaNuclear War ... CD
Unheard Music Series/Atavistic, 1982. Used ... $26.99
Long-overdue reissue of one of Ra's greatest moments! The song "Nuclear War" is to Ra's 80s career what "Space Is The Place" was to his 70s one – a bona-fide hit, played with a catchy groove, and a chorus that was a great hook into new audiences at the time. It's got a political lyric, and a back/forth rhythmic approach that shows that the Arkestra could still hit a good groove when they wanted to! The other tracks on the album have a more straightforward approach – heading into Ra's straighter 80s side, a mix of traditional jazz tunes performed with organ, synthesizer, tenor, alto, baritone, trumpet, and percussion. There's still plenty of oddness in the mix – and Ra's work on organ and synth give the record an eerie edge that gets a bit funky on other tunes. Titles include "Nameless One No 2", "Celestial Love", "Drop Me Off In Harlem", and "Retrospect". CD

A really unusual setting for Sun Ra – given that the legendary jazz figure is working here on a host of American songbook standards – and not the cosmic tunes of his own creation! And yes, as you might guess, there's an offbeat feel to almost all the performances here – which stand as a great way of illustrating the deep respect for jazz history that Ra had, even though he was always pushing the music in different directions! There's a number of moments that are quite respectful of the melodies, while others are a bit more offbeat – and the work features Ra solo on one track, working with the bass of Ronnie Boykins and tenor of John Gilmore on the rest, plus work from drummer Clifford Jarvis and trumpeter Walter Miller on four titles. 1201 Music, 1962/1967. Used ... $6.99
Beautiful lost 60s material from Stitt – recorded without any tricks or gimmicks, in a solidly-blown mode that rivals his best work for Roost and Argo! The first 4 tracks of the set were recorded in New York in 1962 – with an unnamed group that lets Sonny really take the lead on sax, blowing in an easy-going and open style that's every bit the best mode he used on his live work of the time. The next 4 tracks were recorded in Zurich in 1967 – by a group that featured Sonny with Walter Bishop, Tommy Potter, and Kenny Clarke – plus trumpeter Howard McGhee on a few numbers. These tunes are equally great in their understated brilliance, and have perhaps a slight bit more punch, thanks to the expanded lineup. A few numbers run quite long, with very open solo space, and titles include "The Gypsy", "Night Work", "Matter Horns", "Hello", and "Loverman". CD

Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Strut (UK), 2016. Used ... $9.99
Legendary reedman Idris Ackamoor is strongly back in action – working here with a new version of his classic Pyramids group from the 70s – with a groove that's every bit as righteous as their classic albums from back in the day! In truth, Ackamoor has been going strongly over the previous few decades – working on the west coast underground in a mode that's every bit as spiritual and righteous as his more famous material – which means that this new set is hardly some rescue from obscurity, and more just a focus of the spotlight on all the great sounds that Idris has been giving us on his self-released CDs! Yet this new album is definitely something extra-special, too – as Strut have given Ackamoore a real chance to open up with a group that also features the great Babatunde Lea on percussion, as well as two female singers who really help deliver the message in the music. Iris himself plays alto and tenor – and titles include "Rhapsody In Berlin", "Whispering Tenderness", "Clarion Call", "Traponga", "We Be All Africans", "Epiphany", and "Silent Days". CD

Yet although big, there's nothing heavy about the way Pepper handles his horn – as you'll hear especially on the few ballads – and as usual for Adams, his choice of a group is great too – a sharp lineup with Walter Norris on piano, George Mraz on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums. One of Cannonball Adderley's first albums – recorded for Savoy way back in 1955, and done with a free and open style that's a nice contrast to his tighter sides for Mercury! ✨✧ Cannonball Adderley with Bossa Rio SextetCannonball's Bossa Nova ... CD
Capitol/Riverside, 1962. Used ... $5.99
Cannonball Adderley recorded this nice little groover in 1962, when American musicans were just getting on the bossa tip, and still keeping things pretty authentic. The record was cut in New York with Sergio Mendes' early Bossa Rio group – the legendary Brazilian jazz ensemble that featured Paulo Moura, Dom Um Romao, and Durval Ferreira. The mixture of tight bossa rhythms and Cannon's soulful sax is totally great – and it's only because the Riverside label was folding at the time that the record never got bigger fame. It's here now, though, and the record's a real treat – especially at this price! Includes the cuts "Joyce's Samba", "Clouds", "Minha Saudade", "Corcovado", "Batida Diferentes", and "Sambops". Plus, the CD also features bonus single versions of "Corcovado" and "Clouds"! CD

Tohru AizawaTachibana ... CD
Tachibana/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A real mindblower from the Japanese scene of the 70s – a perfect illustration of why that world of records was so incredible during the decade! The music here is spiritual, but also somewhat free – served up by musicians who'd clearly been inspired by John Coltrane and the Impulse Records generation, but who've clearly moved to their own plane of existence as a unit – really feeling each others' impulses automatically, and creating this cohesive vision of music that's simply fantastic from start to finish! All tracks are long, and often quite spiritual too – especially when the tenor and soprano sax of Kyoichiroh Morimura soar out in the lead – driven on by the fantastic piano of leader Tohru Aizawa, and the bass of Kohzoh Watanabe and drums of Tetsuya Morimura. None of the players achieved the same fame as some of their bigger contemporaries, but really sound wonderful here – on titles that include "Dead Letter", "Sacrament", "Philosopher's Stone", and a great version of the Chick Corea tune "La Fiesta". Ambrose AkinmusireOn The Tender Spot Of Every Calloused Moment ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
A fantastic album from trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire – a set that really kicks his career up to the next level, and which is easily the most powerful record he's ever given us! The music finds Ambrose in many moods, all of them righteous – sometimes blowing hard and fierce in a small combo, sometimes issuing out more personal statements in a more stripped-down setting – working with players that include Harish Raghavan on bass, Justin Brown on drums, and Sam Harris on piano – plus vocalist Genevieve Artadi on one especially beautiful number that features Akinmusire on Fender Rhodes! We've loved the music of Ambrose for many years – and this is one of those faith-rewarding sets that always makes it so wonderful to follow the career of any key jazz musician – as we hope you'll also find on titles that include "Roy", "4623", "Moon", "Tide Of Hyacinth", "Cynical Sideliners", and "Mr Roscoe". Joe AlbanyEvening With Joe Albany ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1973. Used ... $11.99
A lost treasure from the great Joe Albany – a well-recorded solo performance from the 70s, and one that really gets at the increasing complexity of Albany's music in his later years! Joe's maybe best-remembered for his contributions to bop, but he's also a player with a sound that really bridges generations of jazz – one that's able to encompass older modes of expression, but always give them some sharper modern edges – in ways that are sometimes subtle, but always completely sublime! This set has Joe working with amazing dexterity over a host of standards – some long, some short, a few in medleys – with this insane command of the keyboard that keeps on pulling out notes that are surprising, yet surprisingly right in the progression that Albany creates – represented here in a setting that gives the legend the same kind of intimate, solo focus that you might have heard on the best Art Tatum recordings. Titles include "Our Love Is Here To Stay", "If You Could See Me Now", "All The Things You Are", "As Time Goes By", "More Than You Know", and "Who Can I Turn To". CD

✨✧ Joe AlbanyPortrait Of An Artist ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1982. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
A great portrait of an under-recorded artist – Joe Albany's last album ever, recorded for Elektra records during their early 80s run of straight jazz sides! The record's got a spare, personal quality that's similar to Albany's other late work – but it's a bit more professionally put together too – not slick or commercial, but recorded quite thoughtfully, with clearly a lot of care in getting all of Joe's charms through on the record. There's a tentativeness to his keyboard work that's great – a sort of hesitation, then quick move forward with surprising grace – balancing beautifully in ways that warm us to his music even more than before. Other players include Al Gafa on guitar, George Duvivier on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – but the record really has a main focus on Albany's piano lines. Titles include "Ruby My Dear", "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry", "Autumn In New York", "They Say It's Wonderful", "For The Little Guy", and "Too Late Now". CD

AmbianceInto A New Journey ... CD
Da Mon/BBE (UK), 1982. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99 18.99
A really beautiful record from the Ambiance ensemble – a group led by reedman Daoud Abubakar Balewa – a musician with the same underground prominence as Plunky Nakabinde and Idris Ackamoor during the same generation! Like both of those artists, Daoud has a way of moving effortlessly between spiritual jazz and more soul-based styles – heard here on one of his standout records from the early 80s, which blends his own work on a variety of saxes with nicely flowing accompaniment on piano, percussion, guitars, and a slight touch of Fender Rhodes – mostly instrumental, but with a few vocal moments from time to time! The vibe is late spiritual jazz – not as tightly tied to Coltrane-based modes, and nicely finding its own space in the universe – on titles that include "Eastwind", "Something Better", "Into A New Journey", and "The Arrival" – plus versions of "Black Narcissus", "500 Miles", and "Windows". David AmramLatin Jazz Celebration ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1983. New Copy ... $3.99 11.98
An early 80s look at Latin jazz from David Amram – with a who's who of Latin jazz players and stellar jazz musicians of other realms – including Paquito D'Riveria, Candido, Machito & Machito Jr, Brazilian percussion guru Duduca Fonseca, David Fathead Newman, Jimmy Knepper, Pepper Adams and others others! What could have come out as clinical or academic comes through with passion and affection, partly because Amram could get such incredible players on the record, but mostly because the multi-instrumentalist ring leader is genuinely celebrating the music rather than simply replicating it. Includes "En Memoria De Chano Pozo, "New York Charanga", "Brazilian Memories", "Celebration", "Song Of The Rainforest" and more. CD

✨✧ Fred Anderson QuartetBirdhouse ... CD
Okka Disk, 1996. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The first new studio recording by tenorist Fred Anderson since 1980 – and a set that shows just how much he'd grown in the intervening years! Here, Fred's newly alive with a younger Chicago group – a great quartet with Jim Baker on piano, Harrison Baker on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – all players openly fluid to move with Anderson from swinging passages to freer ones – a beautiful balance of soul and experimentation, captured in a way that maybe links Fred more closely to Von Freeman than any other record in his career – yet which still captures all the AACM vitality in his music too. Titles include "Birdhouse", "Bernice", "Like Sonny", and "Waiting For Me". CD

Roman AndrenJuanita & Beyond – Live Studio Sessions ... CD
Ajabu/P-Vine (Japan), 2008. Used ... $6.99
Incredible work from Roman Andren – a genre-defying set that's filled with warmth, soul, and imagination – all recorded live in the studio with a really organic feel! The music's a cross between a few different jazz, Afro, and Latin modes – played by a group that features Roman on Fender Rhodes and acoustic piano, with tenor, flute, trumpet, guitar, and some especially great rhythms – lively percussion that brings a bit of a Latin or Brazilian flavor to the music at points, and pushes the set with some great club jazz energy. There's a bit of vocals on the record too – sung by Susanne Ottebring or Miriam Aida – and Fredrik Kronkvist also plays a bit of guest alto sax too. The whole thing's wonderful – a warmly seductive album that really grabs us from the get-go – filled with wonderful tunes that include "Long Ago & Far Far Away", "Felaflight", "Nawana", "Bumblebee", "Let's Live Forever Love", "It's Nice", and "O Mundo E Seu". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.98
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Tremendous work from the legendary Brian Auger – a huge collection of work, a good deal of which is previously unreleased – and a package that makes a fantastic addition to his legendary catalog of organ and keyboard grooves! There's not much here in the way of notes – we would have loved some dates and details – but we can definitely say that our Auger-loving ears found plenty to enjoy here, as the music is from Brian's archives, put together by the man himself – and mixes some bigger hits with a lot of lesser-known material – a collection of 35 tracks that moves through all the jazzy, funky, and soulful modes that always made Brian Auger such a standout of his generation. Titles include "Isola Natale", "The Lady's In Love", "Ella", "Pavane", "Sundown", "Second Wind", "Planet Earth Calling", "Sea Of Tranquility", "Butterfly", "Whenever You're Ready", "Somebody Help Me", "I've Gotta Go Now", "Dawn Of Another Day", and "Voices Of Other Times". ✨✧ David AxelrodEarth Rot – A Musical Comment On The State Of The Environment (with bonus instrumentals album) ... CD
Capitol/Now Again, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
One of the most righteous, message-oriented albums ever from David Axelrod – and the third in his legendary trilogy of instrumental sets for Capitol Records! Earth Rot moves even past the modes of Songs Of Innocence and Songs Of Experience – to offer up a chilling message on the environment, circa 1970 – with beautiful arrangements in the best Axelrod tradition – performed by a large group of jazz players who mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – augmented by a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends! The record's broken into two long suites – "The Warnings" and "The Signs" – and the whole thing blends together in a spacey, other-worldly mix of heavy arrangements and trippy grooves! Amazing package – includes a full bonus LP of instrumental versions, appearing here for the first time ever – plus a huge 32 page booklet of notes and images! CD

David Axelrod/Cannonball AdderleyMessiah ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1971. Used Gatefold ... $9.99
David Axelrod takes on Handel's Messiah – and the result is an amazingly complex set of music – very similar to his earlier albums on Capitol Records, and his Warner work with the Electric Prunes! If you love the Axe, you'll find plenty to love here – spare, dark orchestrations, often with a subtle hint of funk in the rhythms, some jazzy flourishes, and this bold sense of studio majesty that marks Axelrod as one of the most inventive producers of his time! The sound's one that gave birth to a whole generation of hip hoppers and beatheads – and the proceedings are conducted by Cannonball Adderley, with a feel that's similar to other Adderley/Axelrod high-concept sets – like Soul Of The Bible or Soul Zodiac. Titles include "Overture", "Worthy Is the Lamb", "Behold Recitative", "Comfort Ye My People", and "And The Angel Said Unto Them". CD

Albert AylerLove Cry ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... About January 20, 2021
Brilliant late work from Ayler – one of his last truly great albums! The session has none of the jazz-meets-other music feel of some of the other Impulse albums – and is more in the straight expressive style of the ESP recordings. Tracks are more reined in here – with some short themes that are almost a distillation of the freedom Ayler had been expressing for a few years, summed up beautifully in tunes that have a plaintive cry, filled with as much soul and love as Ayler could muster into his horn! Players include Don Ayler, Cal Cobbs, Alan Silva, and Milford Graves – and titles include "Zion Hill", "Love Flower", "Love Cry", "Ghosts", "Omega", and "Dancing Flowers". CD also includes some extra bonus material! CD

Albert AylerSpirits To Ghosts (Spirits/Ghosts) ... CD
Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), 1964. New Copy ... $16.99
A pair of classic Albert Ayler albums from 1964 – back to back on a single CD! First up is Spirits – only the second album ever recorded by Albert Ayler, but a tremendous statement of music that clearly marks the tenorist as one of the most important jazz talents of the 60s! The set was recorded in New York, and only ever got initial exposure overseas – but has grown to become one of the best-remember Ayler albums over the years – thanks in part to a rock-solid lineup of equal visionaries in the group, a lineup that include Sunny Murray on drums, Norman Howard on trumpet, and both Henry Grimes and Earl Henderson on bass – playing together on the title track, which gives the whole thing a really tremendous power. Ayler's clearly the spotlight, though – shining his light with brilliance both in his phrasing of the tenor, and his sense of timing and inherent rhythm – which opens the door to whole new pathways in jazz. Titles include "Spirits", "Prophecy", "Holy Holy", and "Witches & Devils". Next is Ghosts – a seminal early moment from the legendary Albert Ayler – an important session recorded overseas in Copenhagen – where enthusiasm for Ayler's music caught fire more strongly than in the US! The group's got an edge that's maybe even sharper than some of Ayler's ESP material, but no less powerful – with Don Cherry on cornet, Gary Peacock on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums – working through tremendous readings of six Ayler classics that include "Ghosts", "Children", "Holy Spirit", "Vibrations" and "Mothers". A wonderful precursor to the ESP years – and equally great! CD
