Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Other Dimensions In Music with Fay VictorKaiso Stories ... CD
Silkheart (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Vocalist Fay Victor joins the wonderful group Other Dimensions In Music – for a performance that really helps deepen the sound and knock the whole thing out of the park! Make no mistake, we already love the instrumental side of the group – Roy Campbell on trumpets and other instruments, Daniel Carter on saxes and flute, William Parker on bass, and Charles Downs on drums and percussion – all shifting instruments, and working together in a mode that's very strongly in a legacy that runs from the AACM through the loft jazz generation! But the presence of Victor's voice really adds a whole new layer – contributions from various texts, which are spoken and sung, but in ways that are as unconventional as the music that Campbell and Carter make on their horns. Titles include "An Open Letter", "We Is We Trini", "Saltfish Refried", "Three Friends Advised", "Kitch Goes Home", and "John Gilman Wants Tobacco". CD

✨✧ Teodross AveryHarlem Stories – The Music Of Thelonious Monk ... CD
WJ3, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 16.99
It's not unusual for a saxophonist to serve up a record of music by Thelonious Monk – but the approach here from Teodross Avery is nicely different, in part because his natural sense of warmth really transforms the music and makes it his own! Avery blows both tenor and soprano sax – and while some tunes evoke an older reed relationship to Monk, most of the tracks have these fresh arrangements that are very much in the spirit of Teodross' own compositions – nicely fluid, with maybe some of Monk's angles dampened a bit and delivered by two different groups – one with Anthony Wonsey on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and Willie Jones III on drums – the other with DD Jackson on piano, Corcoran Holt on bass, and Marvin Bugalu Smith on drums. Titles include "In Walked Bud"," Trinkle Trinkle", "Boo Boo's Birthday", "Evidence", "Teo", "Monk's Dream", and "Ugly Beauty". CD

Alice BabsMusic With A Jazz Flavour (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Celeste (Japan), 1973. Used ... $24.99
Great stuff by this sublime Swedish jazz singer! Alice Babs has a cool breezy vocal style – one that graced more than a few albums by the time of this 1973 session, including great sets with both American and Swedish backup groups. This one features Alice singing with the orchestra of Nils Lindberg – in a sophisticated jazzy mode that's a bit like some of the styles used by singers like Monica Zetterlund or Sheila Jordan during the early 70s, but perhaps a bit more flowery. The album features her jazz dance version of "Been To Canaan", done with some heavily grooving congas in the mix – plus the tracks "Song For The Dreamer", "Checkered Hat", "Hody", and "A Hundred Years From Today". CD also features 2 bonus tracks – "Say When" and "Natural Affection". (Vocalists, Jazz) CD

Pacific Jazz (Japan), 1956. Used ... $9.99
Although the initial release of this music was a cheap attempt to cash in on the tragic fame of the late James Dean, this 1956 session was also one of the nicest big band dates to come out of the Pacific Jazz catalog of the 1950s! Chet Baker and Bud Shank are the featured soloists of the set – and the group's conducted by Johnny Mandel and Bill Holman, both excellent arrangers with a strong feel for soundtrack-oriented material of this sort. Tommy Sands sings vocals on a version of "Let Me Be Loved", which is the only standard on the set – as the rest of the tracks are originals by the great Leith Stevens. The band's filled with other west coasters that you'll recognize – and titles include "The Movie Star", "Jimmy's Theme", "The Search", "Lost Love", and "Rebel At Work". CD

Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

Big Band KatowiceMusic For My Friends ... CD
Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1977. Used ... $14.99
Funky big band from Poland – a very groovy set that's right up there with the best large group 70s sessions on MPS! The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. The album features a great funky remake of "Madrox", with a nice cop show break at the start, plus the funky numbers "Hey Man", "Sorcery", and "Music For My Friends". CD

Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (3CD set) ... CD
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 3CD ... $25.99
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! CD

A very cool take on the music of Sound Of Music – handled with some help from arranger Gary McFarland, in a way that really unlocks the modal potentials of the tunes! ✨✧ John Carter & Bobby BradfordSelf Determination Music ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Titles include "The Sunday Afternoon Jazz Blues Society", "The Eye Of The Storm", "Loneliness", and "Encounter". CD

Paul ChambersChambers' Music – A Jazz Delegation From The East (Japanese paper sleeve edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Imperial/EMI (Japan), 1956. Used ... $24.99
Great early work from one of the hippest bassists of his generation! Paul Chambers cut this obscure little album in LA, featuring a "jazz delegation from the east" that included Philly Joe Jones on drums and John Coltrane on tenor – plus pianist Kenny Drew, who had already been working on the west coast – all in a style that's much more relaxed and stretched-out than most other jazz recorded in LA at the time! The album is one of the earliest small group sessions with Coltrane, and it's a very spare batch of tracks that lead off with Chambers' amazing work on bass – but which also feature some incredible early work from Trane – very raw and loud in the mix, with a lot more bluesiness than you'd expect – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "Dexterity", "Visitation", "John Paul Jones", and "Eastbound". Plus, the CD also seems to include a few bonus titles from an additional 1956 session with Coltrane! CD

Al's the lead soloist in a number of largish groups that are often tightly arranged, but which let the leader break out nicely – cutting with an edge on his tenor that's sometimes even sharper than usual. Cohn handled most of the arrangements – but a few are by Johnny Carisi, Ralph Burns, or Manny Albam –a nd players include Joe Newman on trumpet, Billy Byaers and Frank Rehak on trombone, Gene Quill on alto, and Jimmy Raney on guitar. Proceedings are tight, but never too uptight – and titles include "Cabin In The Sky", "Lullaby Of Birdland", "This Reminds Me Of You", "Move", "Cohn My Way", "La Ronde", and "Never Never Land". Passport (Italy), 1968/1980. Very Good ... $11.99
A really incredible performance from Ornette Coleman – recorded in Italy in 1968, and featuring a unique lineup that includes Ed Blackwell on drums, plus the dual basses of Charlie Haden and David Izenzon! The two-bass lineup gives the set an amazingly tight edge – with one player bowing the instrument, and the other playing rhythm – in a way that bounces magically over the drums of Ed Blackwell, making for a rhythmic spirit that's missing from a lot of Ornette's other work from the time! There's still a sense of sound texture and exploration here that matches some of the Blue Note late 60s recordings – but the overall feel is a bit more focused, and (dare we say it?) more rhythmically swinging! Titles include long takes on "Lonely Woman", "Monsieur Le Prince", "Forgotten Children", and "Buddah Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ John ColtraneCosmic Music ... LP
Impulse, 1968. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A set that really earns its title – as it's easily some of the most cosmic music John Coltrane ever recorded – and also kind of a way of saying goodbye to the planet, to leave his music in the hands of a next generation of creators! The album features material recorded by a Coltrane group in 1966, and an Alice Coltrane combo in 1968, after Coltrane's death – making it a great link between two moments in the group – especially since Pharoah Sanders plays tenor and Alice Coltrane plays piano on both tracks. The Coltrane tunes – "Manifestation" and "Reverend King" – both have a righteous raw power – and the Alice Coltrane numbers – "The Sun" and "Lord Help Me" – really showcase the slower-building spiritual energy that both she and Pharoah Sanders would carry on in their music. Ted DanielZulu's Ball – Ted Daniel Plays The Music Of King Oliver ... CD
Altura, 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
Trumpeter Ted Daniel takes on the music of jazz founder King Oliver – but as you'd expect from all of Daniel's other groundbreaking work, the result here is something quite unique! True, the tunes are older numbers from the Oliver songbook of the 20s – but the approach is maybe a bit more freewheeling and pan-historic – a bit like the mode you'd expect if this project was handled by some of the artists on the Black Saint/Soul Note label in the early 80s. As with their work, the immediate approach is historically respectful, but the individual currents in the music really update the sound – thanks to a lineup that includes Daniel on cornet, Charlie Burnham on violin, Newman Baker on percussion, Joe Daley on tuba, and Marvin Sewell on guitar. Titles include "Tears", "Working Man's Blues", "Riverside Blues", "Mabel's Dream", "Just Gone", and "Zulu's Ball" – most taken in much longer readings than recordings from the 78rpm generation. CD

Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $41.99 44.99
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". Choice/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Overlooked 70s work from Jimmy Giuffre – a hip trio session that has all the free elements of his earlier recordings, but possibly an even greater focus on tone! Jimmy plays a range of reeds here – tenor, clarinet, and flute – and he works with bass and drum accompaniment, but often in a really gentle way that allows his own solo energy to dictate the tunes – coming out in space that's boldly soulful on the tenor, yet more fragile and intimate on the flute – kind of a cross between more expressive avant work and some of the more spiritual tones of the time. The tenor tunes are especially great – kind of opening a new chapter for Giuffre's career – and titles include "The Bird", "Mosquito Dance", "The Chanting", "The Butterfly", "Dervish", "Phoenix", and "Night Dance". Jimmy GiuffreMusic Man ... LP
Atlantic, Late 50s. Near Mint- ... $14.99
The Music Man, made different – thanks to very fresh arrangements from Jimmy Giuffre – heard here in one of his few large group sessions for Atlantic Records! The music is all from the score of the famous show, but Giuffre really reworks things with some sharp modern jazz edges – inventive rhythms from bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Ed Shaugnessy – and no use of piano at all, which allows for plenty of free play in the horn section – which features Giuffre on tenor, clarinet, and baritone – plus Al Cohn and Eddie Wasserman on tenor, Joe Wilder and Phil Sunkel on trumpets, and Sol Schlinger on baritone sax. Without any vocals, and with Jimmy's unique structures, these tunes take on some very fresh styles – and titles include "Marian The Librarian", "The Wells Fargo Wagon", "Iowa Stubborn", "Gary Indiana", and "It's You". Great stuff from Benny Golson! Komos (France), 2019. Used ... $9.99
A really different take on the music of Don Cherry – but one that we're guessing Don would have really approved of himself! The "acoustronics" in the group's name slightly gives away the vibe – as there's definitely acoustic elements, but also a fair bit of electronics – of the sort that Cherry was embracing more in the mid 80s, as part of his continuing musical journey from jazz, to global realms, to territory that might resonate more with the sound of the streets! There's no trumpet at all on the record, but Vincent Thekal plays tenor and soprano, to hold on to a jazz component – amidst lots of drum machine and keyboard parts from leader Gary Gritness, plus more from Olivier Portal – both musicians who somehow manage to evoke the global currents of earlier Don Cherry music, but in a very different way. Titles include "Mahakali", "Karmapa Chenno", "Universal Mother", "I Walk", "Malkauns", and "Degi Degi". CD

Iro Haarla, Ulf Krokfors, & Barry AltschulAround Again – The Music Of Carla Bley ... CD
Tum (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
A trio take on the music of Carla Bley – and a record that takes us back to a time when Bley's compositions were showing up in the repertoire of the hippest trios of the 60s – long before she ever got the chance to make bigger records on her own! That sense of openness that Bley brought to jazz is perfectly captured here – and very evenly balanced between the piano of Iro Haarla, the bass of Ulf Krokfors, and drums of Barry Altschul – the last of whom is maybe more part of Bley's generation, but somehow feels even more youthful here! Haarla's got maybe a sharper approach on the piano than some of Bley's interpreters in years past – but also knows when to lay back and let the bass and drums emerge a bit more too – on titles that include "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Batterie", "King Korn", "Intermission Music", "Around Again", "Start", and "Jesus Maria". Joe HendersonLush Life – The Music Of Billy Strayhorn (promo CD) ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used ... $3.99
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD

His tone is as sharp as that of Lee Konitz, but he plays with a bit more boppish intensity, and also hits some deeper moments that make you feel like he thinks he's playing a tenor – all of which makes for an incredible record that we've treasured as one of his rare few statements from this brilliant period. A brilliant collection of work from Stan Kenton – recordings from his Innovations Orchestra, the groundbreaking group from the years 1950 and 1951, which featured players that include Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, Shorty Rogers, and Laurindo Almeida! The work features Kenton in some of his most modern modes – taking the broad range of colors and tones he first started forging in the late 40s, and fusing them onto some modern jazz ideals of the early 50s. The result is some incredible music that still sounds extremely fresh today – tracks that still have a swinging rhythm and jazz-based solos, but which also have a keen ear towards the 20th Century Classical Music of mid century. One of the earliest albums ever from the great Sven Libaek – an artist who'd be better known for his famous soundtrack work in the 70s! As you might guess from his name – Sven hails from Scandinavia – but he made most of his career and best music in Australia – and this album was one of his first! The style here is jazz-based, but Libaek already shows those great flowing modes that he brought to his music for film – and the presentation is superb – as the ensemble is loaded with some of the best Australian jazz musicians of the period – including Don Burrows and Errol Buddle on reeds, George Golla on guitar, and John Sangster on vibes – adding in so many great touches in a way that almost makes the whole thing feel like a Cal Tjader recording at times. Massively wonderful work from the mighty Hugh Masekela – easily one of his hippest, most soulful sessions ever! This double-length gem really has Hugh letting go – moving way beyond the pop modes of the late 60s, into a long-flowing, open-rolling groove that's played by a spare quintet lineup with plenty of African themes in the rhythms! Players include Larry Willis on acoustic and electric piano and Dudu Pukwana on alto sax – both of whom are wonderful, and really get a chance to sparkle in the session – almost sharing equal space with Masekela in the sound and shape of the record, although Hugh's horn work is pretty darn amazing too. Other players include Eddie Gomez on bass and Mahaya Ntshoko on drums – and the record has the sort of open, righteous feel of a session on Black Jazz or Strata East – a vibe that really blows away most other Chisa Records work of the time. Titles include Willis' classic "Inner Crisis", plus "Blues For Huey", "Part Of A Whole", "Maesha", "The Big Apple", "Minawa", and "Nomali". (Global Grooves, Jazz) CD

A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's playing in group settings – not trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet would certainly have a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s. Resilience, 2019. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
Key proof that great songs never get old – and maybe even more, that the political messages of yesterday still have plenty of power today! Drummer Ulysses Owens mines the righteous territory of the 60s and 70s here – bringing together songs originally performed by Nina Simone, Abbey Lincoln, and Joni Mitchell – all with a fresher, more contemporary approach that resonates surprisingly strongly – especially given the superb vocals on the album by Rene Marie, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, and Joanna Majoko! You'll no doubt know some of these songs – and most of the originals have been inspiring us for many years – but Owens finds a great way to open them up and make them sound even more vibrant, working with a group that also includes Allyn Johnson on Fender Rhodes and Hammond, David Rosenthal on guitars, and Reuben Rogers on bass. A massive slice of music from percussionist Chano Pozo – best known as the guy who helped forge the mix of bebop and Latin that became known as cubop in the 40s – but also a hell of a musician in his own right too! The set brings together work from a wealth of early 78rpm singles – both cubop material that Pozo recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and others – plus earlier straighter Latin work, with artists from both the New York and Havana scene! There's been some great CD issues of Chano's music from the time, but the package may be the first LP set to really do things justice – and features a total of 28 tracks that all feature Chano Pozo on percussion – titles that include "El Pin Pin" by Cascarita, "Guaguina Yerabo" by Miguelito Valdes, "Paran Pan Pin" by Panchito, "No Se Que Tienes" by Olga Guillot, "Seven Seven" by Chano Pozo, "Cubana Be" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rumba En Swing" by Chano Pozo, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Boco Boco" by Tito Rodriguez, "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cometelo To" by Chano Pozo, "Llora" by Cascarita, "Nague" by Miguelito Valdes, "Amparame" by Reinaldo Valdes, "Paran Pin Pin" by Panchito Riset, and "Conga De Los Dandy" by Orquesta Hotel Nacional. Jazz versions of classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim – all done by a group arranged and directed by guitarist Mario Adnet, and featuring guest work from Joyce, Helio Delmiro, Romero Lumbambo, and others! The sound here is really fresh – not merely just a reworking of Jobim's original ideals, but a recasting of them in lightly arranged modes that often take on the shapes, colors, and textures of work by Moacir Santos – styles that are warm, but often have some sharper edges underneath, thanks to great interplay between the instruments. Bits of horns, guitar, piano, and percussion all come together with a tremendous sense of grace – and titles include "Tema Jazz", "Sue Ann", "Domingo Sincopado", "So Danco Samba", "Paulo Voo Livre", "Polo Pony", and "Bate Boca". (Brazil, Jazz) CD

Wally BadarouEchoes (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Island/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A tough record to peg – but a great one too! Wally Badarou plays a range of spacey keyboards that include synclavier, mini moog, and prophet 5 – all over some beats that are a mix of electro and Carribean rhythms – in a style that's part jazzy, part new agey, and part 80s groove! The record's an unusual one, but it's pretty darn compelling – especially from a vantage point of the many years since it was recorded – because Badarou's clearly years ahead of his time, working here in a style that predates many changes to come in electronic music of the 21st century! Tracks include "Endless Race", "Jungle", "Rain", "Keys", "Mambo", and "Canyons". (Soul, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

Buddy CollettePolynesia ... LP
Music & Sound/Trunk (UK), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A unique, rare, and wonderful album from reedman Buddy Collette – very different than any of his better-known work of the 50s – and a complex little set that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! The album was issued by a tiny label away from the LA scene – and has Buddy blending jazz and exotica, but at a level that's way hipper than any of the more mainstream bachelor pad records of the period – maybe even pointing the way towards the very cool records that Buddy would cut overseas. The group is great – very hip – with Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gene Cipriano on reeds, Justin DiTullo on cello, Red Callender on bass and tuba, Earl Palmer on drums, and either Al Viola or Billy Bean on guitar – very versatile jazz musicians who really follow Buddy's lead on the unusual tunes. Colette himself plays flute and a bit of clarinet – and the set also features some cool vocals from singer Marni Nixon. The "Polynesian Suite" features a bit of narration – and other tunes include "Flight", "Gaugin", "Singapore Sling", and "Japanese Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

Frank Cunimondo TrioFrank Cunimondo Trio introducing Lynn Marino ... CD
Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $10.99 15.98
A beautiful set of hipster jazz vocals! This legendary album by Pittsburgh pianist Frank Cunimondo has always been a favorite for the jazz-dance groover "Feelin Good" – a cut which has an incredible drum and bass riff, and which has been sampled more than a few times over the past few years. But even above that track, the whole album's pretty darn great – and it features an excellent set of vocals by the lovely Lynn Marino, a very unique vocalist with a sweet style that's sort of like Blossom Dearie. The whole album's got a lovely light groove, with some heavy rolling piano lines from Frank, tight rhythm backing by the trio, and a great sweet sound from Lynn. A real treasure, and impossible to find on the original vinyl. Titles include "Beyond The Clouds", "Pretty Pretty", "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life", "Love So Fine", "A House Is Not A Home", and the incredible "Feelin Good"! CD

Frank Cunimondo TrioSagittarius (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mondo/Music On Vinyl (UK), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 28.99
A fantastic album by one of the greatest funky keyboard players of the 70s! Frank Cunimondo may have never made it out of his native Pittsburgh during much of the decade, but albums like this will forever ensure that his name be known in the ranks of groovers everywhere! The album features Frank working with his regular trio – but unlike some of his other earlier sessions, this one's got a large amount of work on electric piano, which brings a whole new dimension to Frank's playing! The album kicks off with "Sagitarius", a 12 minute groover that runs along with electric piano solos at top pace, like some of Charles Earland's best work on the Leaving This Planet album. Next up is an 8 minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon", done with lots of funky work on the ARP, squeaking and grooving away in a style that would make Herbie proud! Side two begins with the 14 minute original "Slalom", a cool dark number that builds and builds, adding in more keyboards and getting slowly funkier, in kind of a Bob James mode. Last up is "Samba Nova", a short little bossa number that chills things down nicely. A great little album – and rare as hen's teeth! LP, Vinyl record album

Miles DavisBlack Beauty – Miles Davis At Fillmore West (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sony/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $38.99 39.99
Four sides of noisy, funky, stretched-out playing from Miles Davis – recorded at the Fillmore West, but with an intensity that matches some of Miles' crazy electric recordings from Japan during the early 70s! The music is a powerful blast of music that stretches out over the double-length set of the package – with a style that moves from heavy-duty avant playing, then back to more mellow grooving, then kicks it out nice and hard again – a heavy dose of rock mixed in with the fusion, but still plenty jazzy throughout. In all, the record is probably one of the most heavy-duty that the Miles electric group recorded in the 70s – and the lineup on the set features Steve Grossman on saxes, Chick Corea on electric piano, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Airto on percussion. Tracks include "Spanish Key", "Directions", "Masqualero", "It's About That Time", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", "Bitches Brew", "Willie Nelson", and "Sanctuary". LP, Vinyl record album
