Wide Hive, 2018. Used ... $0.99
Compelling work from a variation on the Throttle Elevator Music combo – one who, like their predecessors, have a style that's often a bit more than conventional jazz – informed by the different strands of sounds that have come through the Wide Hive label that's been their home! The group features original songs and arrangements from Gregory Howe – who's definitely really opening himself up in recent years – and other group members include Matt Montgomery on piano and bass, and also songs and arrangements – plus Erik Jekabson on trumpet, Mike Ramos on guitar, and Mike Hughes on drums. Jekabson is as strong here as on his own albums as a leader – a rich voice who gives the album a sense of majesty at times, and a sense of direction at others – and titles include "Montecito Sunset", "Hum", "Time Is A Sphere", "Ergot", "Embarcadero Plaza", and "Ellipsis". ✨✧ East New York Ensemble De MusicAt The Helm ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... About December 20, 2019
An extremely righteous bit of soul jazz – originally issued in a very small pressing by Folkway Records, at a time when the label was doing some great underground recordings! The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. There's a nice Eastern feel to some of the tracks, and titles include "Mevlana", "Ti Ti", "Sun Flower", and "Bent El Jerusalem". (Global Grooves, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... About November 1, 2019
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD

✨✧ Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleNeptune Collection ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... About November 1, 2019
Warmly experimental music from the 70s Folkways scene – music that's a mixture of jazz, folk, electronics, and improvised styles – played with an open, honest sort of feel! The Entourage Music & Theater Ensemble features four composer/musicians – Joe Clark, Wall Matthews, Rusti Clark, and Michael Smith – all individuals with a nicely subdued sensibility, despite the "theater" in the group's name. The work here is hardly performative – at least not in an aggressive sense – and instead is a beautiful matrix of sounds from instruments that include keyboards, acoustic guitar, soprano sax, viola, gong, and percussion – all used lightly, with an approach that's almost a folksier take on early 70s spiritual jazz – especially given the way the acoustic guitar is used. Titles include "Nature Spirits", "Incantation For The Death Of Self", "Space Needle Suicide", "Tar Box Poltergeist", and "Druid Dance". (Out Sound, Jazz) CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Beaver Harris & The 360 Degree Music ExperienceFrom Rag Time To No Time ... LP
360 Degrees, 1974. Very Good+ ... $24.99
Hardly any ragtime here – despite the title – and instead, the album's one of the greatest ever from drummer Beaver Harris – cut with his ultra-hip 360 Degree Music Experience group! The title is somewhat accurate in that the record brings together a long history of jazz-based expression – almost a century's worth of music, served up by Harris and the group members with the same fluid sensibility as Jaki Byard in his best work, although Byard was never this ambitious! The ensemble is somewhat large, but really comes together well – with an impressive range of artists who include Doc Cheatham on trumpet, Marshall Brown on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano, Keith Marks on flute, Cecil McBee and Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Maxine Sullivan and Bill Willingham on vocals. The album's sort of a mini-history of jazz, but one that's hardly hokey at all – and which usually veers towards Harris' more righteous modes of the 70s, even when hitting older styles. Sullivan is especially great – singing here as a sophisticated soul jazz diva of the 70s, and hardly the older-styled singer we might expect. A few moments are stripped down and percussive – and other odd instrumentation includes a bit of sitar and steel drums. Titles include "It's Hard To But We Do", "I Wish I Knew", "Can There Be Peace?", "Down In Brazil", "African Drums", and "Round Trip". LP, Vinyl record album

Infinite Spirit MusicLive Without Fear ... CD
Ancient Afrika/Jazzman (UK), 1980. New Copy ... $14.99
Beautifully spiritual work from this obscure Chicago group from the late 70s – an AACM ensemble, and quite possibly one of the most soulful we've ever heard! There's a really spare, earthy approach to the work here – one that uses percussion, piano, and saxes from Light Henry Huff – plus beautiful male and female vocals, in a range of spare tunes that build up from the bottom, and flow out with joy and life. The album's not nearly as "out" as you'd expect, given its AACM roots – and has a feeling that's much more in the spirit of groups like Oneness Of Juju, The Pyramids, or Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe – mixing righteous solo passages with a well-conceived approach to the music that holds together wonderfully throughout. Kahil El Zabar is in the group on congas and vocals, and titles include "Soul Flower", "Rasta", "Live Without Fear", "Bright Tune", "Father Spirit Mother Love", and "Children's Song". CD

Incus/Honest Jons (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
Incredible work from a group that forever changed the face of British jazz – and which really found a way for improvised music to exist in a space that's all its own! The "company" is really a quartet – with Derek Bailey on guitar, Evan Parker on soprano sax, Hugh Davies on organ and electronics, and Jamie Muir on percussion – working in a way that's definitely got plenty of free jazz elements, but which also occasionally resonates with experiments in electro-acoustic sound from the 60s – yet at a level that's much warmer and personal, which is the sensibility that important improvisers like this can really bring to the music! Parker also plays a bit of amplified auto harp, which is great – and titles include "In The Victim's Absence", "Pointing", "Bedrest", "Untitled 3", "Untitled 4", and "Its Tongue Trapped To The Rock By A Limpet The Water Rat Succumbed To The Incoming Tide". Like the two excellent Live At Slugs' sets, this live recording captures Charles Tolliver alongside a burning Music Inc. line up, but this time it features John Hicks on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Alvin Queen on drums. The entire group plays with an all out fire that bridges the gap between free and modal playing, over hard swinging rhythms that never lose their pulse. Workman, Hicks and Queen provide supple, flowing rhythms for Tolliver to spin stretched out lines and melodies over on extended takes of "Grand Max", "Truth", "Prayer For Peace", "Our Second Father" and "Repetition". Albert AylerNew Grass/Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe ... CD
Impulse (Germany), 1968/1969. New Copy ... $9.99 11.98
Late greatness from Albert Ayler – two Impulse albums back to back! New Grass is one of the last albums that Ayler ever recorded – and one of his most memorable! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not died a mysterious young death! Music Is The Healing Force Of The Universe is a really mind-expanding album that's unlike anything else he ever did! By the time of the record, Ayler had made a full round trip between the New York and European jazz scenes – leaving important influences wherever he went, and trying desperately to pick up new ones the further he moved on. Here, he's working in a style that's a bit like that of Archie Shepp at the time – still steeped in free jazz and new thing ideals, but infused with a free-thinking approach to the music that allows for bold new styles and sounds. In addition to his own stunning work on tenor, Ayler's also blowing bagpipes and vocalizing a bit next to singer Mary Maria, who does a great recitation on one track of the record. Rhythm is by the two-bass team of Stafford James and Bill Folwell, next to drums by Muhammad Ali – and the whole thing's capped off by guitarist Henry Vestine, who plays in modes that range from bluesy to free. At the time, this one was kind of dismissed as a messed-up mistake that occurred at the end of Ayler's too-short life – but honestly, over the years, this record really really opens itself to us more and more, and we have to say that we think it's one of his most groundbreaking albums! Titles include "Island Harvest", "Drudgery", "Oh Love Of Life", "Masonic Inborn (part 1)", and "A Man Is Like A Tree". CD

Duck BakerSpinning Song – Duck Baker Plays The Music Of Herbie Nichols (180 gram red vinyl presing) ... LP
Avant/Triple Point, 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Guitarist Duck Baker takes on the music of Herbie Nichols – the sometime-overlooked modernist of the postwar years, a player that some folks rank right up there with Thelonious Monk – later given his due with a run of revival projects like this! Nichols' music sounds very different here – less of the sharp percussive angles that a piano might create – and almost more warmly chromatic, through the acoustic guitar readings of the tunes by Baker – himself a very creative player, and really setting himself apart from some of his contemporaries with this project. The album's got equal appeal to both fans of Herbie's mid-century modernism, and the decades of creative acoustic guitar solo material that came before Baker's rise – work by John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and others. Titles include "117th Street", "Portrait Of Ucha", "House Party Starting", "Nick At T's", and "Spinning Song". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Gary BartzMusic Is My Sanctuary ... LP
Capitol, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A fantastic bit of jazz funk fusion – and one of the landmark 70s albums produced by Larry Mizell! This is Gary Bartz's second (and most amazing) collaboration with Larry Mizell – a studio genius who could focus on the best talent of a jazz artist, then expand it using additional keyboards, percussion, and often a sweet bank of chorus vocals to give the tracks an extra soulful sound! By the time of this album, Larry had already worked to great fame with Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, and Johnny Hammond – and the record has him turning his talents towards Gary Bartz to unlock a whole hidden side of soulful expression that would never be matched again! The title cut – "Music Is My Sanctuary" – is a jazz fusion classic in anyone's book, and it features characteristic Mizell keyboards alongside Gary's soulful sax, augmented by a deep vocal chorus that's simply fantastic. Other highlights include "Carnaval De L'Esprit" and "Macaroni" – and the whole album's nice! LP, Vinyl record album

Count BasieOn My Way & Shoutin Again – Count Basie Plays Music By Neal Hefti ... LP
Verve, 1962. Very Good+ ... $3.99
A wonderful album of 60s Basie – one that focuses on the writing and arranging talents of the great Neal Hefti! Hefti's one of our favorite soundtrack composers of the decade, but in the years before his film fame, he was a frequent partner of Basie – and this album marks one of their greatest collaborations together. The tunes are very much in the "loud, then soft, then loud" mode that Hefti pioneered with Basie's angular group of the 50s – but they've also got some of the warmer, more whimsical touches that Neal would explore more fully in his later soundtrack work too. The result is a classic Basie session, but with plenty of surprises – featuring a fresh batch of tunes that includes "Jump For Johnny", "Ducky Bumps", "Rose Bud", "Shanghaied", "Together Again", and "Eee Dee". The group here is very heavy on the horns – lots of trumpets and saxes – underscored by some hipper rhythms that include a bit of guitar, electric bass, and keyboards – never too much to make the record an electric one, but enough to push an older jazz mode into some groovier territory for the 70s! There's a tight stepping feel to the best numbers, and a soaring, spacious sensibility to the rest – almost a soundtrack sort of approach, given the deep colors and tones in the set. Soul What, 2019. New Copy ... $12.99
A trio that really lives up to its name – given that the lineup features three of the most dynamic figures in free jazz over the past few decades! The set was recorded in Chicago, and has a sound that really lives up to that city's embrace of a power trio like this – with completely frenetic work on reeds by Mars Williams, next to tumultuous drums from Paal Nilssen-Love, and some boldly propulsive bass from Kent Kessler – all spun out here over the course of three very long, freely-improvised tracks! Williams plays a few toy instruments, and Nilssen-Love handles some percussion too – both of which make for some slightly more introspective passages, which are soon balanced by more dynamic energy. Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
The only album ever cut as a leader by tenor saxophonist Charles Brackeen during his early years – and a real standout in the catalog of the legendary Strata East label! The set's got an unusual history – in that it's part of the Dolphy Series, recorded before the label started by Clifford Jordan – as a way of giving a strong showcase to so many new ideas that were bursting in jazz during the late 60s! Here, Brackeen's tenor is set up with a trio of musicians most familiarly associated with Ornette Coleman – Don Cherry on trumpet, Charlie Haden on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – a unit that's completely on fire, and freer than before – yet each graced with such strong individuality, every aspect of the record is a complete delight. Brackeen is amazing (why the hell didn't he record more like this at the time?) – but the bass, trumpet, and drums are all very distinct too – the perfect power of free improvisation when it's done right. Titles include "Rhythm X", "Hour Glass", "CB Blues", and "Charles Concept". LP, Vinyl record album

A stone classic from The Brecker Brothers – working here at a new level for 70s jazz fusion! Sure, it's as slick as it can be – with touches of club and disco grooves to give an even smoother edge to the jazz funk of the Brecker Brothers – but thanks to some solid soloing that's not afraid to go for the easy spots, the album's a lot more solid than an number of sound-a-like copycat LPs to come out at the time! There's more than enough interesting jazz funk numbers on here to keep you happy if you dig a soulful fusion groove, and with Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums, the beats are heavy enough in the right places. A really unusual, completely wonderful album from pianist Dave Burrell – a live performance done around the same time as a studio session of the music of Jelly Roll Morton – but with a very different vibe! The difference here is Bob Stewart – who plays tuba with a deftness that's breathtaking – sometimes using the instrument in the same bass rhythm mode that it had in early days of jazz, before the string bass came into play – other times working out a bolder solo voice that's completely mesmerizing – even more so than some of Stewart's important avant jazz recordings in the 80s. The pair are wonderful on the three Jelly Roll Morton titles on the set – "New Orleans Blues", "The Crave", and "Spanish Swat" – all nice and long – then hit a greater sense of variety of the Burrell compositions "Popolo Paniolo", "Pua Mae Ole", and "I Am His Brother". ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". (Rock, Jazz) CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

Ornette ColemanMusic Of Ornette Coleman – Forms & Sounds/Skies Of America ... CD
Sony/BGO (UK), 1967/1972. New Copy 2CDs ... $8.99 16.99
A great couple of harder-to-find Ornette Coleman records – nicely paired up in a 2CD set! First up is The Music Of Ornette Coleman, from 1967 – which is beautiful record that serves as both a showcase for Ornette's "serious" writing efforts – and his ability to play with a larger ensemble! It kicks off with Ornette playing trumpet solos with The Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet as they perform his "Forms & Sounds" live. That's followed by recordings of Ornette's "Space Flight" and "Saints & Soldiers" performed by The Chamber Symphony of Philadelphia Quartet, a string ensemble that brings a new light to Ornette's compositions! Skies Of America is an ambitious record with full orchestra, in a haunting sound that's light years from any of his smaller group recordings of the 60s and 70s! There's an incredible feel to the strings used here – played by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by David Measham – all tied up and dark, with swirling sounds that run up beautifully from the bottom, then take off to the skies promised in the title – opening the door for Ornette to come in and solo freely over the top – in a magical mix that easily makes the record a standout in his long and mighty career! Harmolodic theory is definitely a part of Coleman's conception here – but in very different ways than his quartet or quintet recordings. Lots of tracks on this one, including "Skies Of America", "The Men Who Live In The White House", "Sunday In America", "Dreams", "Native Americans", "Silver Screen", "The Artist In America" and more. Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". LP, Vinyl record album

John ColtraneCosmic Music ... LP
Impulse, 1968. Good Gatefold ... $14.99
A set that really earns its title – as it's easily some of the most cosmic music John Coltrane ever recorded – and also kind of a way of saying goodbye to the planet, to leave his music in the hands of a next generation of creators! The album features material recorded by a Coltrane group in 1966, and an Alice Coltrane combo in 1968, after Coltrane's death – making it a great link between two moments in the group – especially since Pharoah Sanders plays tenor and Alice Coltrane plays piano on both tracks. The Coltrane tunes – "Manifestation" and "Reverend King" – both have a righteous raw power – and the Alice Coltrane numbers – "The Sun" and "Lord Help Me" – really showcase the slower-building spiritual energy that both she and Pharoah Sanders would carry on in their music. Great stuff throughout – and completely essential! LP, Vinyl record album

Spiritmuse, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
The first record in many years from the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble – done with a lineup that features a variation from the original group, but a sound that's very much in keeping with their mission! The Ensemble were always dedicated to preserving a spiritual jazz tradition at a time when the Chicago and global scenes were decidedly more free jazz-oriented – and from his emergence in the 80s onward, percussionist Kahil El'Zabar has continued to fan the flames with his own music, and with fantastic collaborations like this! The group's a quartet this time around – and has the tremendous Corey Wilkes on trumpet, really giving the sound a pointed edge – next to Kahil's work on a variety of percussion instruments, the baritone sax of Alex Harding, and the cello of Ian Maskin. Maskin's performance on the record is often similar to the way in which the violin of Billy Bang was used in El'Zabar's Ritual Trio – a fluid bridge between the percussion and the horn lines – and the set includes great reworkings of the classics "Little Sunflower" and "Freedom Jazz Dance" – plus originals "Ntozake", "Pharoah", "Blew It", "Black Is Back", and "Wish I Knew". Gil plays Jimi? Sounds like a gimmick, but it comes off pretty darn great – and it helps you forgive him for trying to convince the kids that he's not as old as his grey hair might make you think! As always with Evans, the key to the album is a beautiful balance between the strength of the players and vision of the arrangements – a hip mix of musicians who include Billy Harper on tenor and flute, Marvin Hannibal Peterson on trumpet, and both Ryo Kawasaki and John Abercrombie on guitars! Arrangements are great too – handled by Tom Malone, Warren Smith, and Howard Johnson – all of whom make the album way more than just an instrumental reading of Jimi Hendrix tunes – and instead a great platform for improvisation that uses tunes that include "Up From The Skies", "Foxy Lady", "Gypsy Eyes", "Voodoo Chile", "Angel", "Crosstown Traffic", and "Castles Made of Sand". Victor FeldmanVictor Feldman On Vibes – Champagne Music For Cats Who Don't Drink ... CD
Mode/VSOP, 1957. Used ... $8.99
A really hip little session – as light and breezy at one level as it is tight and swinging! Feldman's the leader of the set on vibes, but the greatest strength of the album comes from the group – a sextet that places Victor in the company of trombonist Frank Rosolino, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Carl Perkins, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and drummer Stan Levey. The rhythm section is especially fluid on the record – very in the pocket, but without overstating that fact – and they allow for extremely open solo work from Feldman, Land, and Rosolino. Side two of the album is a real smoker – with some great ensemble numbers that open up with tremendous horn work – tight, yet free-thinking and soulful, with some slight modern touches. Titles include "Chart Of My Heart", "Wilbert's Tune", "Evening In Paris", "Fidelius", and "Bass Reflex". CD

A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". CD

Tracks include "The Song Is You", "Where Are You", "My Secret Love", "The Shadow Of Your Smile", and "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". CD features a bonus track – "Fine & Dandy (take 2)". CD

A trio take on the music of Carla Bley – and a record that takes us back to a time when Bley's compositions were showing up in the repertoire of the hippest trios of the 60s – long before she ever got the chance to make bigger records on her own! That sense of openness that Bley brought to jazz is perfectly captured here – and very evenly balanced between the piano of Iro Haarla, the bass of Ulf Krokfors, and drums of Barry Altschul – the last of whom is maybe more part of Bley's generation, but somehow feels even more youthful here! Haarla's got maybe a sharper approach on the piano than some of Bley's interpreters in years past – but also knows when to lay back and let the bass and drums emerge a bit more too – on titles that include "Ida Lupino", "Closer", "Batterie", "King Korn", "Intermission Music", "Around Again", "Start", and "Jesus Maria". Every time we hear a new project from the team of Warren Hampshire & Greg Foat, we feel like they've raised the bar a little bit, and this homage to sound library jazz might be their best yet! Creative as they are, Hampshire & Foat don't merely cover or adapt the compositions of any legendary 60s or 70s sound library publishers, instead putting together their own moody original material that's inspired by it. There's a loosely moody quality here with a pretty expansive vibe! The duo handles guitars, autoharp, keys, effects and the direction of a stellar band that brings sax, harmonica, flute, strings and drums to the mix. We're really happy this billed as Volume 1 – we're eager for more! Includes "Jasmine", "Mariposa", "Antonio's Theme", "Coastal Drive", "Lost In Nostalgia", "Echo Flute & Bowed Bass", "Pizzicato Strings", "Solo Stremes", "Main Theme", "Solo Fender Rhodes", "Walking Bass & Echo Flute" and more. Verve, 1991. Used ... $4.99
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD

Polskie Nagrania (Poland), 1966. New Copy ... $14.99
Possibly the most fantastic recording ever from the greatest talent of Polish jazz! The material was recorded in 1965, in the years before Komeda followed Roman Polanski to the US to score his films like Rosemary's Baby – and it's one of the greatest modernist albums of the 60s jazz scene on either side of the Atlantic – a record we'd rank right up there with the best from Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Joe Harriott, or other forward-thinking talents of the generation! The style is incredibly modernist, but with none of the over-indulgences that later plagued the Polish prog-oriented scene, and with none of the non-jazz influences that could stop a session like this dead in the water – and instead, the band grooves mightily in a blend of sharp edges and modal rhythms – a tremendous blend that makes the album as appealing to fans of more soulful jazz as it does to those looking for bold modernist statements. The quintet features 2 of Poland's other key jazz figures from the time – Tomasz Stanko on trumpet and Zbigniew Namyslowski on alto sax – and other members include Gunter Lenz on bass and Rune Carlson on drums. Titles are all Komeda originals, all nice and long – and include "Astigmatic", "Kattorna", and "Svantetic". CD

Two 70s albums from overlooked reedman Peter Kuhn – back to back here in a single sweet set! First up is Livin Right – a set that was originally broadcast live on New York radio in 1978, and which really captures the openly creative spirit of the loft jazz generation – as Peter Kuhn plays b-flat and bass clarinet alongside a wonderful group that features two trumpeters – Arthur Williams and Toshinori Kondo, each coming out of a different speaker – plus the great William Parker on bass and Denis Charles on drums! The bass and drums really set the tone here – as they rumble and bristle beautifully, almost like they're setting these little fires – which are then fanned brightly by the clarinet and trumpets – on titles that include "Chi", "Red Tape", and "Manteca Long Gone Axistential". The second CD features a live performance from 1979 – with very freewheeling work by Peter Kuhn on b-flat and bass clarinet, plus some tenor too – really opening up alongside some excellent drums from Dennis Charles. Charles' contributions are great – and very thoughtful – and all tracks are long, with titles that include "Headed Home", "Drum Dharma", "Stigmata", and "Axistential". CD

Many tracks are longer than Moondog would have taken them – in a good way – and titles include "Down Is Up", "All Is Loneliness", "Lament 1", "Nero's Expedition", "Remember", "Fiesta Piano Solo", and "Lullaby". A wonderful later album from 50s cool jazz saxophonist Warne Marsh – one that really has an incredible focus on his tone! With his combination of a warm full tone and cool post-Tristano phrasing, Marsh has one of the most singular voices on the tenor, and one of our favorites! This mid 70s recording has him heading up a quartet playing modern bop, with Lou Levy on piano and Jake Hanna & Fred Atwood providing the pulse underneath. Unlike a lot of other players, Marsh didn't slow down or lose it in later years and his concept sounds as fresh in these later recordings as it does on his classic sides with Konitz & Tristano. The group shines on the Tristano number "317 East 32nd" and Konitz's "Subconscious-Lee" and there's some Warsh & Levy originals too, like "Lunarcy" & "Background Music". LP, Vinyl record album

Lou McGarityMusic From Some Like It Hot ... LP
Jubilee, 1959. Very Good ... $9.99
An album that's way better than you might expect – not the easy cash-in on the film Some Like It Hot that's telegraphed by the cover – but instead a tight trad jazz date by trombonist Lou McGarity – done in some of the same mature modes as Jack Teagarden's work from the same time! The group's a quintet, with lots of room for Lou's bold solos in the lead – and other players include Dick Cary on trumpet and piano, Jack Lesberg on bass, George Barnes on guitar, and Don Marino on drums. Barnes provides a nice link between classic and modern styles – and titles include "Runnin wild", "La Cumparasita", "I'm Thru With Love", "Sugar Blues", "Sweet Sue Just You", and "Stairway To The Stars". Murray McNabbWay In Is The Way Out – Music Of Murray McNabb (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Sarang Bang (New Zealand), Late 70s/1980s/2000s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A much-needed look at the work of New Zealand keyboardist/composer Murray McNabb – an artist who's hardly known within his own nation, much less the rest of the world – but one who comes across here with a wonderful array of sounds! The record mixes together vintage recordings from the 70s and 80s with a few more contemporary tracks – and throughout it all, Murray's a hell of a talent with a really revelatory sound – able to create these colors and tones with a very spiritual vibe – often playing electric piano, but in a setting that also has plenty of strong acoustic elements too – including great reeds from Aussie jazz legend Brian Smith, whose sharp edges really bring a lot of bite to the record! A few numbers are warm, and almost funky – and throughout the whole set, McNabb demonstrates this great ear for lyrical lines that have a great deal of power, and which never fail to captivate our ears. Other musicians include Gianmarco Liguori or Tuhi Timoti on guitar, Kim Paterson on trumpet, and Peter Wood on vibes – and a number of tracks are taken from tapes, without set dates of recording. Titles include "Paradox", "The Private Life Of Birds", "Parisienne", "Song For The Dreamweaver", "Mr Gone", "Karmapa Chenno", "Coquero", "Magenta", "King Kong", "Fourth World", "Meditation In D", and "Radio Priestess". Helen MerrillMusic Makers ... LP
Owl (France), 1986. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Proof that Helen Merrill was continuing to grow as a singer – well into her fourth decade of recording! This obscure session was recorded in France in 1986 – with a lineup that includes Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Gordon Beck on acoustic and electric piano, and Stephane Grappelli on violin. In this spare setting, Merrill's are wonderfully at home – sadly picking her way through a host of tunes that includes great readings of some more familiar numbers, plus a few originals by players on the set. Titles include "Nuages", "Round Midnight", "A Tout Choisir", "As Time Goes By", "Laura", "Music Makers", "And She Still Is With Me", and "Solitude". (Vocalists, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the heavy inner sleeve.)

Milder/Ljungkvist/Landaeus/Augustson/RundqvistMusic Of Anders Garstedt (2018 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Moserobie (Sweden), 2018. New Copy ... $18.99
A beautiful tribute to the too-short career of Swedish trumpeter Anders Garstedt – a musician who never achieved the global fame he deserved, but who really left his mark upon a recent generation of Scandinavian musicians! This set is served up by some of that generation – a lineup that includes Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor and soprano sax, Joakim Milder on tenor, Mathias Landaes on piano, Filip Auguston on bass, and Fredrik Rundqvist on drums – all performing original compositions by Anders that shimmer with beauty and imagination! The intertwining of horns is especially nice, especially in the slower progression of moments – and there's a strength to Garstedt's writing that makes us hope there's more gems like these in his songbook. Titles include "Ades Gased", "Gone For Good", "C", "#27 1/2", "Waltz #2", and "F Minor". CD

Charles MingusLet My Children Hear Music (2LP 180 gram 45 RPM) ... LP
Columbia/ORG, 1973. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
One of the last great records by Charles Mingus – a set of extremely compelling original compositions, played by a fresh group of younger players, plus a few older masters! The record's got a fire and sense of emotion that's missing from a number of other 70s Mingus sessions – and it's one of the few later albums we'd easily rank right up there with his late 50s and early 60s classics! Orchestrations were partially arranged and conducted with help from Sy Johnson – and soloists include James Moody and Bobby Jones on tenor, Charles McPherson on alto, Snookie Young and Lonnie Hillyer on trumpet, and Roland Hanna on piano. Titles include "The Shoes Of The Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers", "Adagio Ma Non Troppo", "The Chill of Death", and "The I Of Hurricane Sue". LP, Vinyl record album

Charles MingusMusic Written For Monterey, 1965 – Not Heard ... LP
Charles Mingus/East Coasting, 1965. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $69.99
A rare rare landmark from Mingus – music written for the 1965 Monterey festival, but (as the title indicates) not played at the festival! The recording was done later, at UCLA, with a group that includes Charles McPherson, Julius Watkins, Jimmy Owens, Hobart Dotson, and Howard Johnson – and it features a large group of horns, playing in some of Mingus' most sophisticated arrangements of the 60s. There's still a tremendous amount of fire in the work, as you'd guess from titles that include "Don't Let It Happen Here", "Don't Be Afraid The Clown's Afraid Too", "Once Upon A Time There Was A Holding Corporation Called Old America", and "They Trespass On The Land Of The Sacred Sioux". Issued by Mingus on his own label, and ostensibly only available by mail! LP, Vinyl record album

Modern Jazz Quartet With Jimmy GiuffreModern Jazz Quartet At Music Inn – Guest Artist Jimmy Giuffre (Jazzlore) ... LP
Atlantic, 1956. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A great addition to the Modern Jazz Quartet – as the clarinet of Jimmy Giuffre brings a sharp modern edge to the record! The album's similar to the other MJQ Music Inn date with Sonny Rollins – and shows how the addition of a reed player can really unlock new colors, tones, and possibilities in the sounds of the group. And in this case, given the Giuffre's at the height of his early powers – coming off some sublime trio dates for Atlantic – the pairing of players is completely sublime! Titles include "A Fugue At Music Inn", "Serenade", and "Fun". LP, Vinyl record album

A mixture of Verve regulars and early third streamers join together in this one-off session designed as a focus on the writing talents of John Lewis. Titles include "Little David's Fugue", "Sun Dance", "Django", and "Midsommer". LP, Vinyl record album

Thelonious MonkGenius Of Modern Music Vol 2 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), Early 50s. Used ... $18.99
A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's playing in group settings – not trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet would certainly have a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s. Titles on this second volume include "Four In One", "Ask Me Now", "Criss Cross", "Skippy", "Hornin In", "Sixteen", and "Let's Cool One". CD

Thelonious MonkMonk's Music ... LP
Riverside, 1957. Very Good ... $99.99
A landmark in jazz – easily one of Thelonious Monk's greatest albums ever, and a magical crossroads of talents that brings together a variety of jazz traditions! The work is performed by an ambitious Monk septet that includes both Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane on tenor – and if you've ever doubted the brilliance of Hawk, this is the record to change your mind. The rest of the group is equally great – with Ray Copeland on trumpet, Gigi Gryce on alto, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Art Blakey on drums – all coming together with Monk to craft a perfect set of tunes that are virtually the definition of "modern jazz". Titles include "Abide With Me", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule With Nellie", and "Epistrophy". LP, Vinyl record album

PM/Solid (Japan), 1978/1979. Used ... $11.99
The second album from Kathryn Moses – a sweet mix of warm vocals, funky flute, and even a bit of sax! Kathyrn's as great a singer as she is an instrumentalist – and the album offers equal parts of her talents – stepping out with a style that's often a bit funky at the bottom, with an electric mixture of flute, guitars, percussion, and bass. Gene Perla produced the record, and it's got a fair bit of choppy grooves that are right up there in the best PM Records mode – more proof that the Canadian scene could groove nicely when it wanted. New Orleans Jazz OrchestraSongs – The Music Of Allen Toussaint ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
A really nice take on the music of New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a record that sets things up in new jazz-based arrangements that open up whole new sides of the songs! You'll know most of the numbers here – especially if you've got any of Toussaint's classic albums or productions in your collection – yet the approach is nicely different, with rich horn shadings that make for a very different vibe – but which still get vocal treatment on most numbers, from singers who include Dee Dee Bridgewater, Philip Manuel, and Gerald French. Adonis Rose handles drums with a nice Nola groove, and also directed the whole thing too – and titles include "Working In The Coal Mine", "Southern Nights", "It's Raining", "Zimple Street", "Ruler Of My Heart", "Java", and "Gert Town".
