✨✧ Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsShaman ... LP
Strut (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous return to form for reedman Idris Ackamoor and his Pyramids group – and a record that we love every bit as much as his classic material from the 70s! There's a power, righteousness, and urgency to this album that we haven't heard from Ackamoor in years – very much the kind of material that's both a message and a medicine for the planet – of the sort that first inspired Ackamoor's generation in the 70s – and which is rarely carried off in a contemporary context this well! Idris plays tenor, but also delivers some surprisingly wonderful vocals and a few very powerful spoken parts too – and the rest of the lineup features Margaux Simmons on flute, Bobby Cobb on guitar, Ruben Ramos Medina on bass, Jack Yglesies on percussion, Sandra Poindexter on viola and violin, and Giole Pagliaccia on drums. The vibe here is like the vintage Black Fire Records label at its best – and titles include "Salvation", "Theme For Cecil", "When Will I See You Again", "Shaman", "Tango Of Love", "Dogon Mysteries", and "The Last Slave Ship". ✨✧ Idris Ackamoor/The PyramidsMusic Of Idris Ackamoor 1971 to 2004 ... CD
EM (Japan), 1970s/1980s/1990s/Early 2000s. Used 2CD ... $29.99
A treasure trove of spiritual jazz from saxophonist Idris Ackamoor – featuring his famous 70s recordings with The Pyramids, solo material, and even some previously unissued titles! The bulk of the collection comes from The Pyramids' albums Birth Speed Merging, Lalibela, and King Of Kings – all freely creative records that build upon traditions initiated by the AACM in Chicago, and taken further groups like The Artistic Heritage Ensemble, The Human Arts Ensemble, or Oneness Of Juju. Many tracks build freely from earthy percussion, bits of vocals, and spiraling solos on saxes and flute – with a sound that's incredibly soulful and righteous – very positive and progressive, and easily some of the best work of this nature from the time! 2CD set features Pyramids tracks "The Land Of Eternal Song (part 3)", "Mohgo Naba", "Queen Of The Spirits (part 3)", "Black Man Of The Nile", "Aomawa", "The River Ganges", and "Masenko Nights" – plus "Spiritual Rebirth", "Centurian", "Topanga", "Cubana", and "Africa" by Idris Ackamoor; as well as "The Shepherd's Tune" by The Collective. CD
(Out of print. A great package – includes the original oversized jewel case, obi, and a great booklet packed with photos and notes in Japanese and English.)

Freedom PowerFreedom Power ... LP
CMT/Sonor (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $44.99
Mad funky work from the Italian studio scene of the 70s – the only album we've ever seen from Freedom Power – a combo who play with the energy of an American blacksploitation soundtrack from back in the day! There's loads of heavy drums, fast-riffing guitar, and sweet keyboards on the set – and although the record's got a few trippy moments that feature slightly psychedelic production, the overall vibe is way more in the soulful side of the spectrum – which really gives the album a universal appeal. There's some great tenor on a few cuts, and we wish we could tell you more about the players – but we're guessing they're some top-shelf jazz musicians, working under an assumed name. Titles include "Happy Fire", "Sigla RP", "Reaction", "Vortice", "Psycho", "Trip Free", "Freedom Power", "Privacy", and "Dopping 2000". (Sound Library, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Chico FreemanPied Piper ... CD
Blackhawk, 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly great little set from Chico Freeman – and a record that seems to hone his best creative energies of the loft jazz years into an even hipper groove! The group here features Freeman on a wide variety of reeds – alongside John Purcell on saxes and oboe, Kenny Kirkland on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – all in a sound that's wonderfully focused, and in a way that almost has Chico sounding a lot more deeply expressive than in earlier years. To us, Freeman's always been one of those players who sounds better on the inside than the out – and this album has him nicely restrained, and really working on the best side of his craft. Titles include "Blues On The Bottom", "The Rose Tattoo", "Pied Piper", "Monk 2000", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Amor Sona Dor". CD
(Out of print. Tray card is missing both spines.)

✨✧ Phil RanelinPhil Ranelin Collected 2003 to 2019 (3LP set) ... LP
Wide Hive, 2000s/2010s. New Copy 3LP ... Out Of Stock
An incredible late-life chapter from trombonist Phil Ranelin – a musician who first flourished on the Detroit scene of the 70s, as part of the Tribe Records underground in that city – and one who dropped off the radar of most folks until a huge revival in the past two decades, spurred on by new interest in his classic recordings! Ranelin got a chance to work elsewhere during this stretch, but his greatest champions may well have been the Wide Hive label – who not only gave Phil new access to the studio, and exposure to a much wider audience than before – but also allowed him to create in some of the larger ensemble modes that were always his strongest suit! The music here is pulled from Ranelin's albums for Wide Hive, but also includes a few new tracks too – and musicians include Pharoah Sanders on tenor, Zane Musa on alto and tenor, Kamasi Washington on tenor, Roger Glenn on vibes, Danny Grissett on piano, Nate Morgan on piano, Henry Franklin on bass, Calvin Keys on guitar, Big Black on congas, and Donald Bailey on drums. Titles include "Living A New Day", "Blue Bossa", "Moorish", "In Search Of The One", "This One's For Trane", "Freddie's Groove", "Full Moon", "Spiritual Vibrations", "How Do We End All This Madness", "Fantasy Vibrations", "Black On The Nu", "A Tear In Elmina", "Close Encounters", "Shades Of Dolphy", and "Perseverance 2019".
