✨✧ Larry CoryellCoryell (pink vinyl pressing) (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Vanguard/Culture Factory, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the funkiest album that guitarist Larry Coryell ever cut – his debut as a leader, and a fuzzy, freaky set that features some massively heavy drums from the great Bernard Purdie! The set's jazz at the core, but has lots of rock elements too – including vocals from Coryell on a few cuts, whose rough-edged style of singing works nicely with the fuzz on his guitar. The whole thing's a really freewheeling trip down that genre-busting road that had opened up in the underground of the late 60s – a path taken away from folk, jazz, rock, and other more mainstream roads – served up with help from Mike Mandel on keyboards, Jim Pepper on flute, and bassists Chuck Rainey, Ron Carter, and Albert Stinson. Titles include the long funky groove called "The Jam with Albert", plus the tracks "Sex", "Beautiful Woman", "Morning Sickness", and "Ah Wuv Ooh". (Nice "naked kids" cover, too – the kind that must have made someone's therapist a lot of money!) LP, Vinyl record album
(On "Crystal Clear Rose" vinyl!)

✨✧ Paquito D'Rivera with Arturo SandovalReunion (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Messidor (Germany), 1990. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great set of Latin-tinged jazz – and the first recording that Paquito D'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval had made together in many years! The set's got the angular groove of Paquito's best work of the early 80s – tight Latin jazz, with plenty of percussion at the bottom – played out over longer tracks that allow plenty of space for him and Sandoval to solo, and which also feature piano by Danilo Perez and guitar by Fareed Haque. Titles include "Tanga", "Latin American Suite", "Claudia", "Body & Soul", "Reunion", and "Friday Morning". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Shabaka HutchingsAfrikan Culture (maroon vinyl pressing) (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Impulse, 2022. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A long-overdue solo debut from Shabaka Hutchings – the London-based reed player who's been making huge waves in Comet Is Coming and Sons Of Kemet – stepping out here with an equally great musical vision of his own! The style here is more spiritual and meditative – as if Shabaka is turning inward, and working a mix of flutes and saxes in ways that are very organic and personal – often using subtle currents of sound next to his acoustic activity at the core, as he bridges a legacy of 70s expression and some of the more contemporary modes on the UK scene. Titles include "Explore Inner Space", "Call It A European Paradox", "Memories Don't Live Like People Do", "Rebirth", "Dimension Of Subtle Awareness", "Ital Is Vita", "Ritual Awakening", and "Black Meditation". ✨✧ Ahmad JamalEmerald City Nights – Live At The Penthouse 1963 to 1964 (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Jazz Detective/Elemental, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really fantastic music from pianist Ahmad Jamal – a set of tracks that's a really nice change from some of the recordings he was doing for Chess Records in the early 60s, and which definitely point the way towards the more stretched-out performances to come on Impulse Records! As the title implies, the setting is live – and Jamal really stretches out here on a number of tunes – working with a free-flowing sense of lyrical beauty that's even more stunning than in the shorter space of a studio cut – really skilled with that ear for tone and timing that made his work such a fresh voice on the piano scene at the time, and a subtle hint at righteous modes to come in the following generation. Chuck Lampkin is on drums throughout, and one set features Richard Evans on bass, the other Jamil Nasser – on long takes of "Bogota", "Minor Adjustments", "All Of You", "Squatty Roo", "Keep On Keeping On", "Minor Moods", "Lollipops & Roses", "Tangerine", and "But Not For Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Individually numbered limited edition pressing – with a heavy booklet of notes!)

✨✧ Ahmad JamalEmerald City Nights – Live At The Penthouse 1965 to 1966 (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Jazz Detective/Elemental, Mid 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Piano genius Ahmad Jamal is really taking off here – letting his solos stretch out and his impeccable sense of timing really move things forward from his studio sides of the time – allowed plenty of freedom in the space of the Penthouse nightclub in Seattle during the mid 60s! The package features three different performances, all of which have sublime work on bass from Jamil Nasser – easily one of Jamal's greatest accompanists, and a player whose sense of rounded energy seems tied to the keys of Ahmad's piano at every single moment. Drums are by a different player on each date – Chuck Lampkin, Vernel Fournier, and Frank Gant – and titles include long versions of "Concern", "Feeling Good"," My First Love Song", "Who Can I Turn To", "I Didn't Know What Time It Was", "Invitation", and "Poinciana". ✨✧ Charles MingusMingus (Candid) (180 gram pressing) (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Candid, 1960. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of Charles Mingus' classic recordings for the Candid label – far and away some of the best recordings he ever made, and some of the few studio sessions that really let him stretch out and do his thing! The Candid label didn't last long – but during their short stretch of recording, they gave musicians like Mingus a chance to do things they weren't able to do at bigger labels – and this 1960 session is a great change from some of the tighter style that Charles was using just the year before at Columbia. The group is a searing combo – Eric Dolphy on alto, Booker Ervin on tenor, Ted Curson on tenor, and Jimmy Knepper on trombone – really taking off on long tracks that are filled with brilliant solo work – titles that include "Lock Em Up", "MDM", and "Stormy Weather". ✨✧ Jaco PastoriusTruth, Liberty & Soul – Live in NYC – The Complete 1982 NPR Jazz Alive (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Resonance, 1981. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A famous broadcast performance by this legendary bassist – but one that's presented here in a version that features 40 minutes of music that never aired on the original program! This well-recorded set captures Jaco Pastorius at his height – after a huge step forward in sound and style in the 70s – to a time when he was exploring so many new ideas, and new ways of expressing himself on the electric bass – an instrument that he completely transformed for generations to come! The group's a large one – Jaco's Word Of Mouth ensemble – with Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano sax, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – plus Othello Molineaux on some mighty cool steel drums. There's a larger horn section, too – and Toots Theielmans plays a bit of guest harmonica – and most tracks are nice and long. Titles include "Okonkole Y Trompa", "Three Views Of A Secret", "Invitation", "Soul Intro/The Chicken", "Twins", "Bass & Drum Improvisation", "Reza/Giant Steps", and "Mr Fonebone". LP, Vinyl record album
(Hand-numbered limited edition pressing – on 180 gram vinyl!)

✨✧ SarachoEn Medio (180 gram pressing) (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Impulse, 1973. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual albums issued by Impulse Records in the early 70s – one that's partly funky jazz, partly Chicano soul – and very much in that nice mixing of modes that the label was cooking up in the years after John Coltrane's passing! Gary Saracho leads the group on acoustic and electric piano – and the rest of the ensemble includes soprano sax, electric guitar, timbales, bass, and an assortment of other odd instrumentation, including some woodwinds – all served up in a style that's very hard to label easily – one of the reasons why the record was a bit ignored in the 70s, and is now seen as one that was years ahead of its time! Titles include "Happy, Sad", "Sunday's Church", "Senor Baker", and "Conquest De Mejico". (Latin, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Stark RealityDiscovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
AJP/Now Again, 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the most tripped-out albums of funk you'll ever buy – a rare treasure with a very unusual history! The Stark Reality were a cool little combo formed to work on public television in Boston in the late 60s – and the combo featured some heavy guitars, fuzzed-up vibes, and some monster percussion laid out in tight bass and drum rhythms that were years ahead of their time! The group recorded one rare album – ostensibly a children's record, but based around old compositions by Hoagy Carmichael, completely pulled apart, sliced up, overly harmonized, and spat out into wild funky tunes that bear no resemblance to their originals! John Abercrombie handles the guitar, Monty Stark delivers the vibes and vocals – and titles include "Rocket Ship", "Shooting Star", "Bustin Out Of Doors", "Comrades", "Swing High", "Cooking", "Grandfather Clock", "The Old Prospector", "The Whale", "Junkman's Song", and "Merry Go Round". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes booklet with rare photos, liner notes and more!)

✨✧ Tony WilliamsPlay Or Die (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
PS Productions/Made In Germany (Germany), 1980. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An unusual set from an overlooked chapter in the career of drummer Tony Williams – material cut in Germany after his big major label albums of the 70s, but before he'd return to more standard jazz territory on Blue Note in the 80s! The style here is very different than both, and really is a great fit for the dynamic energy that Williams unlocked on the drum kit – with maybe echoes of his contributions to Weather Report, but even leaner – as the group is a trio with Tom Grant on keyboards and Patrick O'Hearn on bass – both players we don't know that much at all, but who've clearly drawn great inspiration from the more hard-hitting side of the 70s fusion spectrum! Tony is a monster on the drum kit – really upfront in the recording, with lots of space to open up on the album's long tracks – with breathtaking energy that shows why he might have been the key force in helping the Miles Davis group pick up the pace at the Plugged Nickel. Titles include "Para Oriente", "The Big Man", "Beach Ball Tango", and "Jam Tune". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousJazz Dispensary – Haunted High (pink splatter vinyl pressing) (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Fantasy/Craft, Mid 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Get past the pot reference in the title, and dive into the record itself – a treasure trove of great grooves in many flavors – Latin, Brazilian, jazz, and funk – all pulled from the mighty vaults of Fantasy Records! The artists are different, but there's a nice link between the cuts – a way of moving from one track to the next at a level that really makes sense – as you'll hear on titles that include "Mindoro" by Cal Tjader, "Windmills Of Your Mind" by Barbara Lewis, "Strange Fruit" by Gene Ammons, "Phases" by Cannonball Adderley, "La Fiesta" by Woody Herman, "Los Indios" by Mongo Santamaria, "Silver Sword" by Flora Purim, and "Desert Cry" by McCoy Tyner. (Funky Compilations, Jazz) LP, Vinyl record album
