Rare material from the short lived Pendulum group – an expanded release of their one and only album, a live recording from the Village Vanguard. The original LP release included just 3 tracks – "Pendulum", "Picadilly Lilly", and "Footprints" – this version adds 8 songs, including "Blue Bossa", "Solar", another version of Liebman's "Picadilly Lilly", and a long reading of Coltrane's "Impressions"! CD
(Out of print limited edition. Booklet cover has light creasing, but this is a nice copy overall.)
A really beautiful record from vibist Joe Locke – and maybe his most dynamic album in years! The set's got Joe working in a particularly angular mode – carving out these wonderful lines of sound with core rhythms from the trio of Robert Rodriguez on piano, Terreon Gully on drums, and Ricky Rodriguez on bass – all younger players who provide a very fresh setting for Locke's vibes! Joe's still got all the warmth of his recent records, but also has a bit more edge, too – which we like a lot – and this quality seems to come out especially strong alongside some of the guests – who include Rosario Giuliani on alto and soprano sax and Donny McCaslin on tenor. Titles include "For Jesse Mountain", "Love Is Letting Go", "Love Is A Pendulum", "Love Is The Tide", and "Variation On Wisdom". CD
Although bassist Oscar Pettiford left a huge influence on jazz before his untimely death, there's not actually that many fantastic records in which he's featured as a leader. Fortunately, this is one of the few, and it's a sparkling set of modernist inflected bop tunes played by a group that includes Mingus on bass, Phil Urso on tenor, Walter Bishop on piano, and Percy Heath on drums. Pettiford plays cello, and his lead on the instrument gives the record a dark tone that is extremely haunting. Titles include "Low & Behold", "Pendulum", and "Tamalpais". LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo blue label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a half split spine, some splitting on the top seam, & light surface wear.)
A really heady record from British drummer Brian Bennett – an artist known for both jazz and funky sound library work – here stretching out in a mode that really fits the image on the cover! The tunes are longer than some of Bennett's earlier sound library material – almost a mix of progressive energy with jazzier funk – a lot cooler than the disco reference in the title might imply! The set's got tremendous keyboards from Francis Monkman – who handles all the spacier elements, while the drums of Bennett works the rhythms with bass from Alan Jones – on long tracks with plenty of complexity, but also plenty of groove! Titles include "Voyage", "Solstice", "Chain Reaction", "Pendulum Force", "Air Quake", and "Ocean Glide". (Sound Library, Jazz)LP, Vinyl record album
(First US vinyl release – on limited black and blue swirled vinyl!)

Herbie Mann —
Stone Flute ... CD Embryo/Wounded Bird, 1970. Used ...
Out Of Stock
Stone flute, or stoned flute, the album's got a really laidback feel – a sound that's very open-ended, and quite different from some of the crossover classics Herbie Mann was cutting a few short years before! The record's got the darkly brooding feel of some of his other work on the Vortex label – and features a subtle blend of softly-blown flute with guitar from Sonny Sharrock, vibes from Roy Ayers, and bass from either Miroslav Vitous or Ron Carter. There's some light added strings on most tracks, but they're arranged by William S Fischer – in ways that make them more sly sense of darkness in the background than standard sleepy accompaniment. Herbie and Fischer are a perfect combination here, one that makes for a surprising degree of depth – on titles that include "Waltz For My Son", "Miss Free Spirit", "Flying", "In Tangier", and "Pendulum". Although Buddy Morrow's best known for his more crime-jazz and Night Train jazz work, this album's got him sounding surprisingly great in a set of tracks dedicated to the work of Edgar Allen Poe! The feel of the music shifts wildly from track to track – with a few that feature Keith McKenna reciting work by Poe, in a Vincent Price-y style, and others that groove with more of a swinging jazz feel. Titles include "The Gold Bug", "Annabel Lee", "A Descent Into The Maelstrom", "The Raven", "Murders in the Rue Morgue", "The Black Cat", and "The Pit & the Pendulum".
