Johnny Marks/Burl IvesRudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer – Original Sound Track & Music ... CD
Decca/MCA, 1964. Used ... $3.99
The classic soundtrack to the original Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer "videocraft" animated TV special from 1964 – with timeless, cheerful music and lyrics by Johnny Marks – beautifully voiced by folksy balladeer Burl Ives! Includes the holiday pop standards "Silver And Gold", "A Holly Jolly Christmas", "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" and of course the title track – plus a bunch of numbers that are pretty wonderful, too, and nowhere near as overplayed – including "There's Always Tomorrow", "I Heard The Bells On Christmas Days", "We're A Couple Of Misfits", "We Are Santa's Elves" and more. Played by the Decca Concert Orchestra, the music is straight-up beautiful, and the CD includes the orginal soundtrack with vocal numbers and instrumentals cuts – just like the original LP! CD

Mars Williams with Witches & DevilsAyler Xmas – The Music Of Albert Ayler & Songs Of Christmas ... CD
Soul What, 2017. New Copy ... $12.99
One of the most dynamic Christmas albums you'd ever hope to buy – mostly because the approach here is based around the frenetic jazz style of the legendary reedman Albert Ayler! The group here is the Witches & Devils group of saxophonist Mars Williams – a combo who take their name from one of Ayler's most famous tunes – and players include Josh Berman on cornet, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Kent Kessler on bass, Brian Sandstrom on bass and guitar, and Steve Hunt on drums – a Chicago lineup who do a great job here of folding together bits of Ayler's music with familiar Christmas themes – all at a level that's completely mindblowing! The set's definitely not one you'll play when grandma's over for dinner on the 25th of December – but it is a wonderful statement from the always-vibrant Chicago scene – with titles that include "O Tannebaum Spirits 12 Days Of Xmas", "Angels We Have Heard On High Omega Is Alpha", and "Ma'Oz Tzur Truth Is Marching In Jingle Bells". Yolanda RabunChristmastime ... CD
Yodyful Music, 2012. New Copy ... $9.99
A really special Holiday set from Yolanda Rabun – a great little Christmas record that warmly mixes together jazz and soul with a timeless vibe that will have you playing this one for years to come! Yolanda takes her cues from some of the best seasonal albums of the 70s and 80s – and goes for a mode that's contemporary, but never overdone – just the right sort of warmth to personalize the tunes, but without ever pushing towards a commercial sort of spirit. Titles include "Wishing You A Very Merry Christmas", "Sleep Oh My Little One Sleep", "Twelfth Night O Mistress Mine", "Children Go Where I Send Thee", and "I'm Coming Home For The Holidays". CD

✨✧ Akim & The Teddy Van Production CompSanta Claus Is A Black Man/A Natural Santa ... 7-inch
Simtone, 1973. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A wild one from the Chicago scene of the early 70s! The track features little kid vocals, over production music quality backing tracks from the Teddy Vann Production Company – with a holiday Black Consciousness sort of message. Maybe not the funkiest Christmas record you'll come across, but certainly unique! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Ames BrothersThere'll Always Be A Christmas (with bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Real Gone, 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
The groovy harmony vocals of The Ames Brothers are a perfect fit for this Holiday classic from RCA – a record that features great orchestrations from Sid Ramin, the same arranger who worked with the group on their Destination Moon album! This set's maybe a bit more down to earth, but still has that nice punch that Ramin can bring to the music – and even when mellow, the Ames' still find a way to make the music their own – turning in a group harmony Christmas album years before the Swingle Singers or Beach Boys. Titles include "Santa Claus Is Comin To Down", "Christmas", "Go Tell it On The Mountain", "Jingle Bells", "The Christmas Song", "Deck The Halls", and "What Child Is This". CD features the original mono mix – and bonus tracks "I Got A Cold For Christmas" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm". CD

✨✧ Lynn AndersonLynn Anderson Christmas Album (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/Real Gone, 1971. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
A sweet country Christmas from Lynn Anderson – a set that may not be as well-known as Holiday records by Johnny Cash or Buck Owens, but which we'd put in a similar high spot in our collection! Lynn does a great job with the material – bringing in just the right sort of "Blue Christmas" tones to make the music more than just schmaltzy pop – and she also contributes one tune of her own, and works with some other unusual tracks that keep the record from just being a rehash of the same old Christmas tunes. Production is by Glenn Sutton, and titles include "Mr Mistletoe", "The Spirit Of Christmas", "Ding A Ling The Christmas Bell", "Soon It Will Be Christmas Day", "Don't Wish Me Merry Christmas", and "A Whistle & A Whisker Away". CD features bonus tracks – "Ding A Ling The Christmas Bell (1971 promo Christmas Seals version)", "Don't Wish Me Merry Christmas (1971 promo Christmas Seals version)", "Don't Wish Me Merry Christmas (1972 promo Christmas Seals version)", and "Frosty The Snowman (1972 promo Christmas Seals version)". ✨✧ Charles Brown/Bill DoggettPlease Come Home For Christmas ... LP
King, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A special holiday package – one that brings together Charles Brown's classic Christmas Recordings for King Records – plus a few later tracks by organist Bill Doggett! Brown was one of the first guys to ever record an important R&B Christmas tune in the postwar years – and here, he's featured in a full album of music of the same nature – which really furthers his legacy in the genre! Brown's approach is groundbreaking – as he has both the depth of a blues singer and the class of a more polished artist – balanced beautifully in a way that's light years away from earlier blues Christmas tunes, but a lot richer than some of the pop patter of the years. The King production and presentation help tremendously, too – and titles include "Please Come Home For Christmas", "Christmas With No One To Love", "Christmas Blues", "It's Christmas All Year Round", "Merry Christmas Baby", "Christmas Questions", and "Wrap Yourself In A Christmas Package". Added to these tracks are some sweet Hammond Holiday instrumentals from Bill Doggett – titles that include "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "Blue Christmas", "The Christmas Song", and "Winger Wonderland". LP, Vinyl record album

ChipmunksChristmas With The Chipmunks ... CD
EMI, Late 50s. Used ... $1.99
One of THE greatest Christmas albums of all time – and a record that really helped define the Holiday genre for the full length LP! At the time of the set, David Seville and his Chipmunks were almost just a one-off novelty act for 50s AM radio – but this album forever cemented their place in the musical history books – not to mention around the Christmas tree! The gimmick is simple, but effective – as Seville uses sped up tape to create the sound of singing cartoony chipmunks – deconstructing Holiday tunes along the way with a variety of gags, tricks, and mischief. Seville himself plays host to the set, often getting in fights with Chipmunk Alvin – and titles include the classic "The Chipmunk Song", plus "My Two Front Teeth", "White Christmas", "Silver Bells", "We Wish You A Merry Christmas", "Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer", and "Frosty The Snowman".
