Aaron CohenMove On Up – Chicago Soul Music & Black Cultural Power ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. Rob Franken ElectrificationFunctional Stereo Music (Together/Six Seven Eight/Don't Stop/Colours & Images/Absorbed Love/Blue Sky Fingers) (3CD set) ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! (Sound Library, Holiday Gift Ideas) CD

Mike Reed, edCity Was Yellow – Chicago Jazz & Improvised Music 1980-2010 ... Book
Mike Reed, 2019. New Copy ... $28.99 35.00
A beautiful book on the Chicago jazz scene, and the things that make it really special – not the Windy City world of years back – when Ramsey Lewis and other big names were dominating things – but Chicago in more recent years, when the city has been a non-stop hotbed of continuous creative activity! Musician Mike Reed is the guiding force here – himself a key part of the growth of the past decade or two – and the presentation is very unique, with a short essay on a key musician, accompanied by a photo, then also a piece of music by the artist – transcribed on full sheet music, scoring a key contribution – in a way that makes the large volume both a history book and a book of sheet music as well. Entries are by key critical forces on the Chicago scene – John Corbett, Peter Margasak, John Litweiler, Neil Tesser, and others – and the presentation is as beautiful as the sounds it seeks to document. Entries include sections on Nicole Mitchell, Jason Adasiewicz, Ken Vandermark, Jeff Parker, Von Freeman, Mantana Roberts, Willie Pickens, and many others – and the book is oversize, 154 pages, softcover, and in two-tone color throughout. VariousBakersfield Sound – Country Music Capitol Of The West 1940 to 1974 (10CD set) ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1940s/1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 10CD ... $189.99 249.99
An amazing tribute to the Bakersfield scene – one that finally gives the California city the same sort of attention that we usually see in sets dedicated to Nashville! Bakersfield is well-known as the home of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, but the city's got a long legacy of influencing country music for decades – a good deal of which is presented here, in a package that brings together loads of rare Cali country singles that we never would have heard otherwise, along with well-chosen cuts from some of its stars, and a fair bit of rare and unissued material too! At the center of the set is a huge hardcover book by Scott Bomar – hardcover, 12" square, and with 224 full color pages of notes and images on the genius of Bakersfield, and what made it such a unique country music spot. The 10 CDs feature nearly 300 songs in all – one disc of which is all rare live and unissued material – and in addition to work by Buck and Merle, the set features tracks by Wayne Morris, Jerry Cornelius, Vancie & Rita, Georgia Lynn, Kenny Hays, Tommy Lewis, Rollie Webber, Johnny Barnette, Bonnie Owens, Bobby Durham, George Latta, Owen Charles, Larry Daniels, Gene Moles, Al Brumley, Bill Handy, Leo Stephens, Faye Hardin, Tom Tall, Cliff Crofford, Kenny Vernon, Rose Lee Maphis, Oscar Whittington, Foyle Holley, Dick Curless, Red Simpson, Gary Paxton, Jim Ward, and many many more! Buddy CollettePolynesia ... LP
Music & Sound/Trunk (UK), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99
A unique, rare, and wonderful album from reedman Buddy Collette – very different than any of his better-known work of the 50s – and a complex little set that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! The album was issued by a tiny label away from the LA scene – and has Buddy blending jazz and exotica, but at a level that's way hipper than any of the more mainstream bachelor pad records of the period – maybe even pointing the way towards the very cool records that Buddy would cut overseas. The group is great – very hip – with Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gene Cipriano on reeds, Justin DiTullo on cello, Red Callender on bass and tuba, Earl Palmer on drums, and either Al Viola or Billy Bean on guitar – very versatile jazz musicians who really follow Buddy's lead on the unusual tunes. Colette himself plays flute and a bit of clarinet – and the set also features some cool vocals from singer Marni Nixon. The "Polynesian Suite" features a bit of narration – and other tunes include "Flight", "Gaugin", "Singapore Sling", and "Japanese Suite". (Jazz, Holiday Gift Ideas) LP, Vinyl record album

BandBand (2LP 50th anniversary edition – 2 x 45rpm) ... LP
Capitol, 1969. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 34.99
Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". David BowieConversation Piece (5CD & book set) ... CD
Parlophone, Late 60s. New Copy 5CD & book ... $89.99 99.99
An amazing legacy of lost music from David Bowie – a host of obscure recordings, demos, and session tracks done in the short space leading up to the Space Oddity album – presented in a book-style package that also features two versions of that classic record too! Some of this material has circulated digitally, others on very expensive vinyl sets, but together the 5CD package offers up the biggest picture we've ever seen of the development of Bowie in the years after his initial recordings for Deram, and his Space Oddity explosion in 1969. CD1 features home demos of tunes that include "Animal Farm", "April's Tooth Of Gold", "The Reverend Raymond Brown", "Mother Grey", "Goodbye 3d Joe", "Angel Angel Grubby Face", and "Space Oddity". CD2 offers up rare demos for Mercury – with titles that include "Janine", "Ching A Ling", "I'm Not Quite", "Lover To The Dawn", "When I'm Five", and "Life Is A Circus". CD3 features Conversation Pieces – alternate takes of "London By Ta Ta" and "In The Heat Of The Morning" - plus BBC sessions, and more alternate takes. CD4 features the original David Bowie album before it transformed into Space Oddity, and CD5 features the full Space Oddity album in its 2019 Tony Visconti mix – both CDs with bonus tracks too. Includes a great 120 page hardcover book, too! (Rock, Holiday Gift Ideas) CD

David BowieMercury Demos (with art print & contact sheets) ... LP
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy ... $62.99 69.99
A completely cool little package – one that offers up the first-ever release of ten tracks that David Bowie recorded in his apartment to give as demos to Mercury Records – material done right before his "Space Oddity" fame, with help from John Hutch Hutchinson on guitar! The set comes as a replica of a large reel-to-reel tape box – complete with fabric on the edge and interior, along with other inserts inside – all of which make you feel like you're getting a special package right from the man himself – as some early statement of his genius from a time when he was far more obscure. The music is great – with Bowie and Hutch singing together in harmony, and trading vocals – almost a Bowie take on a Simon & Garfunkel mode, and surprisingly well-recorded for demo material. Some of the cuts here are very early takes on classics, a few more unusual originals, and even a few covers – titles that include "Life Is A Circus", "When I'm Five", "Love Song", "Lover To The Dawn", "I'm Not Quite", "Occasional Dream", "Janine", "Conversation Piece", "Ching A Ling", and an early take on "Space Oddity" – which has the track done with this duo vocal – Bowie as Major Tom, and Hutch as ground control! (Rock, Holiday Gift Ideas) LP, Vinyl record album
(LP comes in a replica reel-to-reel tape box with print, 2 contact sheets, and notes by Mark Adams.)
