Aaron CohenMove On Up – Chicago Soul Music & Black Cultural Power ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A tremendous achievement from music writer Aaron Cohen – a book that finally gets at the deeper, richer story of Chicago soul – the spirit of empowerment and pride that have always made us so honored to be part of the Windy City legacy! Cohen picks up where other soul writers have left off on Chicago – really looking at the shifts into the 70s, which included greater ties to the means of production, and an increased role in the social agenda as well – all part of an evolution in songwriting styles, production techniques, and the growing power of the full length album over the 7" single! Cohen looks at many key figures of the time – Earth Wind & Fire, Chaka Khan & Rufus, Curtis Mayfield, Phil Cohran & The Artistic Heritage Ensemble – and the very well-researched book is a delight to read throughout – easily the deepest work that Cohen's ever given us. 234 pages, softcover, with some black and white images – and a selected discography too. John CorbettPick Up The Pieces – Excursions In 70s Music (hardcover) ... Book
University Of Chicago, 2019. New Copy ... $22.99 30.00
Writer John Corbett has given us words on a huge variety of musical styles over the years – a fair bit of them left field and avant – but this time around, he's tackling the full range of 70s rock, pop, and soul music – in a huge book that's unlike anything he's ever written before! First off, the large volume is very personal – part listening autobiography, part paean to the musical giants who shaped the decade, and part hindsight record review of all the amazing sounds that were created during the 70s! The book follows the decade with year-by-year chapters – yet it's hardly a history at all – as Corbett picks key songs and albums as touchstones for each year – partly because of their impact, but more because of the power they had for him as a listener. The albums run the gamut – from Nursery Cryme by Genesis, to Les Stances A Sophie by The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, to Pink Moon by Nick Drake – and songs include "Sex Machine" by James Brown, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, and "Long Time" by Boston. 496 pages, hardcover. ✨✧ Rob Franken ElectrificationFunctional Stereo Music (Together/Six Seven Eight/Don't Stop/Colours & Images/Absorbed Love/Blue Sky Fingers) (3CD set) ... CD
678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! (Sound Library, Holiday Gift Ideas) CD

Buddy CollettePolynesia ... LP
Music & Sound/Trunk (UK), Late 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99
A unique, rare, and wonderful album from reedman Buddy Collette – very different than any of his better-known work of the 50s – and a complex little set that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! The album was issued by a tiny label away from the LA scene – and has Buddy blending jazz and exotica, but at a level that's way hipper than any of the more mainstream bachelor pad records of the period – maybe even pointing the way towards the very cool records that Buddy would cut overseas. The group is great – very hip – with Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Gene Cipriano on reeds, Justin DiTullo on cello, Red Callender on bass and tuba, Earl Palmer on drums, and either Al Viola or Billy Bean on guitar – very versatile jazz musicians who really follow Buddy's lead on the unusual tunes. Colette himself plays flute and a bit of clarinet – and the set also features some cool vocals from singer Marni Nixon. The "Polynesian Suite" features a bit of narration – and other tunes include "Flight", "Gaugin", "Singapore Sling", and "Japanese Suite". (Jazz, Holiday Gift Ideas) LP, Vinyl record album

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration (4LP set) ... LP
PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. New Copy 4LP ... $65.99 69.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". ✨✧ BandBand (2LP 50th anniversary edition – 2 x 45rpm) ... LP
Capitol, 1969. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $26.99 34.99
Maybe not the first album from the legendary Band – but a record in which the group get everything completely right all the way through – and sparkle with that special sound that continues to influence generations of music makers, and music lovers! All the great elements the group were bringing to their work with Bob Dylan are in place here – but the focus is completely different, with this warm glow that really fits the vocals of Levon Helm, and a sense of unified vision that makes it really hard to even come up with a match for the energy of the group on this album. The great John Simon adds a few special touches to the overall sound – and titles include "Rockin Chair", "Across The Great Divide", "When You Awake", "Up On Cripple Creek", "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down", "Look Out Cleveland", and "King Harvest". David BowieConversation Piece (5CD & book set) ... CD
Parlophone, Late 60s. New Copy 5CD & book ... $89.99 99.99
An amazing legacy of lost music from David Bowie – a host of obscure recordings, demos, and session tracks done in the short space leading up to the Space Oddity album – presented in a book-style package that also features two versions of that classic record too! Some of this material has circulated digitally, others on very expensive vinyl sets, but together the 5CD package offers up the biggest picture we've ever seen of the development of Bowie in the years after his initial recordings for Deram, and his Space Oddity explosion in 1969. CD1 features home demos of tunes that include "Animal Farm", "April's Tooth Of Gold", "The Reverend Raymond Brown", "Mother Grey", "Goodbye 3d Joe", "Angel Angel Grubby Face", and "Space Oddity". CD2 offers up rare demos for Mercury – with titles that include "Janine", "Ching A Ling", "I'm Not Quite", "Lover To The Dawn", "When I'm Five", and "Life Is A Circus". CD3 features Conversation Pieces – alternate takes of "London By Ta Ta" and "In The Heat Of The Morning" - plus BBC sessions, and more alternate takes. CD4 features the original David Bowie album before it transformed into Space Oddity, and CD5 features the full Space Oddity album in its 2019 Tony Visconti mix – both CDs with bonus tracks too. Includes a great 120 page hardcover book, too! (Rock, Holiday Gift Ideas) CD

David BowieMercury Demos (with art print & contact sheets) ... LP
Parlophone, 1969. New Copy ... $62.99 69.99
A completely cool little package – one that offers up the first-ever release of ten tracks that David Bowie recorded in his apartment to give as demos to Mercury Records – material done right before his "Space Oddity" fame, with help from John Hutch Hutchinson on guitar! The set comes as a replica of a large reel-to-reel tape box – complete with fabric on the edge and interior, along with other inserts inside – all of which make you feel like you're getting a special package right from the man himself – as some early statement of his genius from a time when he was far more obscure. The music is great – with Bowie and Hutch singing together in harmony, and trading vocals – almost a Bowie take on a Simon & Garfunkel mode, and surprisingly well-recorded for demo material. Some of the cuts here are very early takes on classics, a few more unusual originals, and even a few covers – titles that include "Life Is A Circus", "When I'm Five", "Love Song", "Lover To The Dawn", "I'm Not Quite", "Occasional Dream", "Janine", "Conversation Piece", "Ching A Ling", and an early take on "Space Oddity" – which has the track done with this duo vocal – Bowie as Major Tom, and Hutch as ground control! Nat King ColeHittin The Ramp – The Early Years 1936 to 1943 (180 gram pressing – 10LP set) ... LP
Resonance, Late 30s/Early 40s. New Copy 10LP ... $199.99
A mindblowing look at the early years of Nat King Cole – a set that stretches in a mighty wide space before Nat's big fame at Capitol Records – and which also greatly expands our understanding of the material he recorded during his Decca years too! The music takes Nat back to a time long before most folks know his music – with roots in the bluesier side of the Chicago scene, moving through jazzier modes of the swing generation, to the tight trio work that helped Cole shape the sound of a generation – and all before he even got a chance to record more as a singer, and with bigger backings too! There's definitely some early Decca Records material from the 78rpm years, but there's also lots of alternate takes, small label material for Philo, Excelsior, and other labels – then a stunning amount of transcription recordings that were done for radio and broadcast – plus a few live tracks too. Not all the work here was recorded under Nat's name, either – as there's tracks in which Cole features strongly in other combos – although most tracks are trio numbers, and guitar great Oscar Moore is in the lineup right from the start. The 10LP set features over 180 tracks in all, remastered with really great sound – plus a 16 page booklet that's filled with notes, photos, and lots more musical history! (Vocalists, Holiday Gift Ideas) LP, Vinyl record album
(Hand-numbered limited edition pressing on 180 gram vinyl pressed at RTI!)
