VariousBakersfield Sound – Country Music Capitol Of The West 1940 to 1974 (10CD set) ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), 1940s/1950s/1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 10CD ... $189.99 249.99
An amazing tribute to the Bakersfield scene – one that finally gives the California city the same sort of attention that we usually see in sets dedicated to Nashville! Bakersfield is well-known as the home of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, but the city's got a long legacy of influencing country music for decades – a good deal of which is presented here, in a package that brings together loads of rare Cali country singles that we never would have heard otherwise, along with well-chosen cuts from some of its stars, and a fair bit of rare and unissued material too! At the center of the set is a huge hardcover book by Scott Bomar – hardcover, 12" square, and with 224 full color pages of notes and images on the genius of Bakersfield, and what made it such a unique country music spot. The 10 CDs feature nearly 300 songs in all – one disc of which is all rare live and unissued material – and in addition to work by Buck and Merle, the set features tracks by Wayne Morris, Jerry Cornelius, Vancie & Rita, Georgia Lynn, Kenny Hays, Tommy Lewis, Rollie Webber, Johnny Barnette, Bonnie Owens, Bobby Durham, George Latta, Owen Charles, Larry Daniels, Gene Moles, Al Brumley, Bill Handy, Leo Stephens, Faye Hardin, Tom Tall, Cliff Crofford, Kenny Vernon, Rose Lee Maphis, Oscar Whittington, Foyle Holley, Dick Curless, Red Simpson, Gary Paxton, Jim Ward, and many many more! VariousHarry Smith B-Sides – Anthology Of American Folk Music (4CD set & book) ... CD
Dust To Digital, 1920s/1930s/1940s. New Copy 4CD ... $73.99
An amazing collection – and one that really lives up to the genius of the original Anthology Of American Folk Music put together by Harry Smith for Folkways Records! That groundbreaking set is the stuff of legend – a package that collected rare blues, folk, string band, hillbilly, and other styles from Smith's own collection of 78rpm singles – then brought together by Folkways with copious notes and a huge amount of detail that opened the door to this lost world of music for listeners over many decades. Here, the collection goes back to further Smith's choices – by offering up the flipside of all the records included in the original set – tracks that are almost always as great as the other sides, given that so many of these artists were getting a brief time in the studio, and really gave their all during the recordings. The package is one of the nicest we've ever seen on Dust To Digital – done with more than enough notes and packaging detail to live up to the spirit of the original – in a set of 84 tracks, with work by Dick Justice, Clarence Ashley, Coley Jones, Bill & Belle Reed, Buell Kazee, Buster Carter & Preston Young, Williamson Brothers & Curry, The Masked Marvel, William & Versey Smith, Carter Family, GB Grayson, Mississippi John Hurt, Uncle Eck Dunford, Uncle Bunt Stephens, Carolina Tar Heels, Furry Lewis, Ernest Phipps, Cannon's Jug Stompers, Richard Rabbit Brown, Rev Moses Mason, Alabama Sacred Harp Singers, Cincinnati Jug Band, Rev JM Gates, Jim Jackson, Breaux Freres, Blind Willie Johnson, Dock Boggs, Bascom Lamar Lunsford, Julius Daniels, Ramblin Thomas, Sleepy John Estes, and many others! (Folk/Country, Holiday Gift Ideas) CD
(Great package too – in a cigar box style, with a cool cork-covered book that has a massive amount of notes and images!)

VariousMake More Noise – Women In Independent Music UK 1977 to 1987 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 4CDs ... $39.99
A really great idea for a collection, and one that traces a really unique moment in time – that explosion of small indie labels on the UK scene during the early years of punk – a moment that opened the door for countless new waves of musical expression for years to come! Sure, the big labels recorded their share of girl rockers in the 70s – but it was up to labels like Rough Trade, Stiff, and many others to fully give under-discovered artists a role in the music – as you'll hear in this collection that starts with the earliest years of UK punk, and moves into some of the bigger names of the indie scene in the decade to come. As with other Cherry Red sets of this nature, the package is almost worth the price alone – a book-styled jacket with pages of notes on each of the artists within – to support a massive 4CD set list with 90 tracks by artists who include Margox, Cocteau Twins, Ova, Dolly Mixture, Amy & The Angels, X Ray Spex, Poison Girls, Androids Of Mu, Lene Lovich, Bright Girls, Toyah, Flatbackers, Lora Logic, Girlschool, The Slits, The Chefs, Au Pairs, Rip Rig & Panic, The Skodas, Darling Buds, Miaow, Primitives, Vaselines, Raincoats, We've Got A Fuzzbox, Strawberry Switchblade, Tracey Ullman, Pink Industry, and many others! VariousMusik Music Musique – 1980 The Dawn Of Synth Pop (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1980. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A great little set that brings together the big bang of electro pop that hit the UK scene at the start of the 80s – work from that moment when previous, more experimental strands of music from the initial post-punk years started cleaning things up, going for hooks, and making some pretty darn catchy music in the process! Yet the work here is also maybe still far from some of the overplayed big hits of a few years later – that key moment when early experimenters were crafting some great tunes, but still not sounding too commercial – and sometimes enticing other artists who didn't always record in this mode to join in on the fun! And if you think you know all the sounds from this time, this box set might give you a big surprise – as there's plenty of work here that we didn't expect – not just more obscure tunes by bigger names, but also some obscure artists who fit right into the groove – all given plenty of coverage in the large booklet of notes. 3CD set features 58 tracks in all - with work by The Passage, Berlin Blondes, Buggles, M, Silicon Teens, Rockets, John Foxx, Science, Fad Gadget, Zeus, OMD, Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls, Dark Day, Der Plan, Kevin Harrison, Japan, Dalek I, Taxi Girl, Systems, Karel Fialka, Nini Raviolette, The Korgis, Alex Fergusson, The Metronomes, Lori & The Chameleons, and others. Whit Boyd ComboParty Girls (gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy ... $23.99 26.99
Funky organ jazz from a very unlikely source – a Texas-made porno from 1969, and a movie that dared ask the question "Do prostitutes make good wives?" The music is unusual in that it's actually pretty darn good – nice small combo jazz, often with a good current of funk in the mix – surprisingly still around after all these years, on audio tapes that stand where no extant copy of the film remains! The sound is nice and raw – heavy drums, plenty of Hammond, and some trumpet solos too – all with a feel that's maybe more like a gem from the contemporary funk underground, although a lot grittier overall! Plus, most tracks are nice and long – clearly scored for extended sex scenes – which is a real rarity for music like this of the time, usually served up on the short side of a funky 45. The set begins with the trailer-like "Don't Miss The Party Girls" – then soars into the 15 minute "Nikki & The College Boys", and the 23 minute "Party Scene/Strip Poker" – plus a version of the James Brown tune "I Got The Feelin". Solomon BurkeKing Of Rock N Soul – The Atlantic Recordings 1962 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Atlantic/Soulmusic.com (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $24.99
Essential work from the legendary Solomon Burke – one of the greatest singers to record for Atlantic Records during the 60s – and an artist we'd put right up there next to Aretha Franklin or Otis Redding! Like both of those giants, Solomon has a style that's completely his own – almost a blueprint for deep soul, southern soul, and 60s soul all together at once – never captured as well or as perfectly as during the mid 60s years he recorded for Atlantic! There's nobody like Solomon Burke during these Atlantic years – a hard-edged singer who was virtually inventing deep soul at the time – taking currents from earlier R&B years, and folding them with a brash, bold energy that was completely heartfelt – and which drew on the same sort of styles that southern soul singers would make their own a few years later – as you'll see by the dates here, Burke predates work by Otis Redding, Percy Sledge, and Wilson Pickett. The package features 3CDS, and a massive 79 tracks in all – the biggest collection of Burke's work for Atlantic that we've ever seen – with tracks that include "I'm Hanging Up My Heart For You", "Baby", "Gotta Travel On", "Peepin", "Yes I Do", "The Price", "You're Good For Me", "Beautiful Brown Eyes", "When She Touches Me", "Keep Lookin", "Woman How Do You Make Me Love You Like I Do", "Presents For Christmas", "What'd I Say", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "This Little Ring", "It's All Right", "How Many Times", "Cry To Me", "Hard Ain't It Hard", "Mountain Of Pride", "I Feel A Sin Coming On", and lots lots more! A fantastic set – all 6 of Solomon's albums for Atlantic, plus non-LP cuts recorded for the label. (Soul, Holiday Gift Ideas) CD

Johnny CashOriginal Sun Albums 1957 to 1964 (8CD set) ... CD
Sun/Charly (UK), Late 50s. New Copy 8CD ... $59.99
A massive collection of early work from Johnny Cash – a set that features the bulk of his early work for Sun Records, plus rare material too – all in a book-style format with a nice set of notes and rare images! The music alone is great – as Johnny works here with his initial Tennesse Three combo – very spare, moody, and rhythmic – a superb foil to Johnny's vocals, and his really fantastic sense of a lyric – already fantastic here, right at the start! And Sun Records owner Sam Phillips knew he had a good thing when he had it – because he recorded so much material on Johnny, he was able to keep issuing albums after Cash had moved to Columbia Records – as you'll see here in the package, which references Sun albums up to the 60s. 107 tracks in all – and full artwork reproductions of every record! John CorbettBullets For Dead Hoods – An Encyclopedia Of Chicago Mobsters Circa 1933 ... Book
Soberscove, 2020. New Copy ... $31.99 38.99
One of the most unique books we've ever gotten from John Corbett – an author who's given us some fantastic music writing over the years! This book is completely different – not written, but "salvaged" – as the contents are a lost manuscript from the early 30s – one that offers up a rundown of 140 different figures in the Chicago mob – some famous, some obscure – all written in this sharp style that's very to the point! The anonymous author offers no judgement in most cases, but provides a surprising amount of detail on each figure – from territory covered, to methods, to some of their important crimes – and their fates, if they ended up dead or in jail. The original manuscript is reproduced here exactly as it was found in a Chicago junk shop by Corbett – yellowed, brittle pages, each given a large page reproduction, with original typeface and typos – which makes it feel like you're handling the whole thing yourself. Corbett provides an introduction to the material – and then at the end, the book has some very cool features – a collection of all the locations referenced in the pages, 400 in all, most of which are presented on a pull-out map of Chicago that comes with the book! 232 pages, softcover, in full color.
