Boogie Down ProductionsBy All Means Necessary ... LP
Jive, 1988. Very Good ... $19.99
Seminal late 80s righteous hip hop from KRS and Boogie Down Productions! By All Means Necessary shows remarkable change in lyrical style from Criminal Minded, delivering a eavy dose of knowledge at a time when so much hip hop was all about rocking the party. KRS's lyrics here mark a serious turn for political hip hop, and it sets a new standard production-wise, as well. Greatness! Includes "My Philosophy", "Ya Slippin'", "Jimmy", "Illegal Business", "Stop The Violence", "Nervous", "I'm Still #1", "Part Time Suckers", "T'Cha - T'Cha" and 'Necessary". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover and labels have a name in marker.)

Sugar Hill, 1982. Very Good+ ... $3.99
Early single from old school pioneer Busy B. With that live/party sound along the lines of Grandmaster Flash's "Birthday Party." The production has a little less of the 'slap bass' sound than some of the other Sugarhill singles from that time. 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Promo in a Sugar Hill sleeve, wtth a large name in marker. Labels have pen.)

DJ QuikQuik Is The Name (with download) ... LP
Profile/Legacy, 1991. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 20.98
DJ Quik's classic debut – arguably one sturdiest records bridging the first wave of the LA gangsta rap era to the G Funk era of the early-to-mid 90s – and definitely one of the tighter and most focused albums of its kind around that time, when rap records were getting largely getting a little too padded with skits and filler. This one's lean and mean and really earns it's slow-building critical legacy. With "Sweet Black P***y", "Born & Raised In Compton", "Tha Bombudd", "Quik Is The Name", "Loked Out Hood", "Quik's Groove", "Tear It Off", "I Got That Feelin'" and "Skanless". LP, Vinyl record album
(Certified Undisputed Classics Of Hip Hop & R&B series!)

Get On Down, 1996/2018. New Copy ... $25.99 28.98
It's been more than 20 years, but the Doctor is in! "Octagon Octagon" is the first new track by the legendary trio of Kool Keith, DJ Qbert and producer Dan The Automator working together under the Octagon name in a couple decades, and it's a solid return to form. You know they have faith in the new track when they're pairing it with their own most classic track "Blue Flowers" – one of the most celebrated hip hop tracks of the late 1990s – as remixed by the great Prince Paul! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Amazing die-cut picture disc, too – with the classic original design by Pushead!)

Dug Infinite & No IDSampler Vol 1 ... LP
All Natural, 2002. Very Good+ 2LP ... $19.99
Back in the day, before Common blew up, Dug Infinite and No ID were responsible for the mellow but tight beats he got to rhyme over. And though Common still gets us open on occasion, this instrumental LP shows that they were a big part of what made those early LPs so great, though we have to admit we're a bit biased, since so many of the track titles here name check our old digs on the South Side. Each of the 2 LPs is split into a Dug side and a No ID side, with loads of nice crisp beats and sweet jazzy samples that show off their Chicago pedigree. 14 tracks in all, including "Dr Wax", "3rd Rail", "I Used To Love HER (rmx inst)", "Fate Or Destiny", "The Fifty Yard Line", "Wacker Drive", "Super Nova" and "Thinking Cap". JaylibChampion Sound ... LP
Stones Throw, 2003. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 22.99
Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. To Detroit", "McNasty Filth" with Frank-n-Dank, "Nowadayz", "Champion Sound", "The Red", "Heavy", "Raw S*!t" with Kweli, "The Official", "The Heist", "The Mission", "React" with Quasimodo, "The Exclusive" with Percee P, "Survival Test", "Starz" and "No Games". MED/Blu/MadlibTurn Up EP ... LP
Fat Beats, 2017. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
We're always happy to see the names MED, Blu & Madlib turn up – and this tight EP represents their legacies proudly, separately and as a trio! Madlib's distinctive craft is on full display in the beats. He has an inimitable way of layering anthemic funky soul bedrock with unpredictable beatcraft, a deep, rumbling bass sound, and bits of sampled strings and other touches that pluck at the emotions while still sounding raw and gritty. Whether the top shelf rhymes are inspired by the beats, vice versa, or a little of both is ripe for discussion, but this is wholly solid work from all parties. Includes the title track with Oh No, "Jungles" feat Black Shakespeare, "House Keys", "Even Though" and "Wonderful" – plus both the instrumental and acapella versions "The Turn Up" and "Jungles" on the flip/ LP, Vinyl record album

Unfiltered portraits of the artist formerly known as Red Pill – delivering the goods under his own name on a solid set for the Mello Music Group! Real life, self searching and personal statement making hip hop from a voice rooted in classic 90s school craft – not so much with a neo-classic sound as much as a strong commitment to beats, rhymes and life experience. Good stuff! Includes production by Nolan The Ninja, Apollo Brown, L'Orange, Onra and Exile – and given the self-protrait mission the guest rhymes kept to a minimum, with just a couple worthy appearances, courtesy Verbal Kent and Fashawn. DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh PrinceHe's The DJ, I'm The Rapper ... LP
Jive/Zomba, 1988. Very Good+ 2LP ... $19.99
One of those rare moments where a mainstream hit goes onto preface years of creative talent to come – even though the whole thing might have seemed like a bit of a one-off at the time! The young Will Smith is fantastic as the Fresh Prince – full of charm, at a level that really upped the game for so many other MCs at the time – especially because both his lyrics and his subject matter weren't maybe the most cutting-edge, but could really come over strong, thanks to the inherent stardom in his presentation! We could well argue that Will on the album introduced the whole idea of a crossover hip hop star – one able to do just about anything – but the whole record would be nothing without the creative skills of Jazzy Jeff – who went the complete opposite way after his pairing with Will – more expressive, more experimental – and even more firmly committed to the underground. Yet it was also that easy bridge between underground and fame that made early hip hop albums like this so great – as Jeff brings forward so many great musical moments on titles that include "Live At Union Square", "DJ On The Wheels", "My Buddy", "Rhythm Trax House Party Style", "He's The DJ I'm The Rapper", "Hip Hop Dancers Theme", "Jazzy's In The House", and "Human Video Game". Cold Chillin, 1987. Very Good ... $14.99
Early Marley Marl produced Kool G Rap single, the follow up to "It's A Demo", where they got the names screwed up on the labels, though they probably thought they were handling it the right way then. 2 raw tracks that never made it on to an LP, with Marley's spare drum machine & scratches approach to production and G Rap's tough QB rhymes filling out the tracks nicely. 12-inch, Vinyl record
