De La SoulTimeless – The Singles Collection ... CD
Tommy Boy, Late 80s/1990s. Used ... $7.99
Has a hip hop group ever warranted a singles set more than De La Soul? Even the Plugs' most inconsistent LPs boast at least a couple of absolutely classic joints – and most of those can be found on this foolproof set. What's even better though, is that many of the classics like "Plug Tunin'", "Jenifa (Taught Me)", "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)", "Buddy", and others are here in extended or alternate mixes that stick closely to the playfully funky vibe that makes the originals such masterpieces, but adds just a bit more of all the great elements! The alternate Prince Paul era cuts pump a bit harder, with even more euphoric energy, and the later cuts like the freestyling "The Bizness" with Common and the incredibly catchy Lalo Schifrin hook in "Oooh" with Redman remind us of the true genius De La is capable of even when their LPs aren't as consistent. We can easily file this set with Full Clip – A Decade Of Gangstarr, Tribe Called Quest's Anthology, and a handful of others in our greatest hip hop best of's ever category! Other cuts include "A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturdays'", "Stakes Is High", "All Good?" with Chaka Kahn, "Ego Trippin' (Part Two)", "Supa Emcees", and "4 More" with Zhane. Nice historical notes and photos, too, for some belated respect from the former label(s). CD

DJ QuikQuik Is The Name ... LP
Profile, 1991. Near Mint- ... $16.99
DJ Quik's classic debut – arguably one sturdiest records bridging the first wave of the LA gangsta rap era to the G Funk era of the early-to-mid 90s – and definitely one of the tighter and most focused albums of its kind around that time, when rap records were getting largely getting a little too padded with skits and filler. This one's lean and mean and really earns it's slow-building critical legacy. With "Sweet Black P***y", "Born & Raised In Compton", "Tha Bombudd", "Quik Is The Name", "Loked Out Hood", "Quik's Groove", "Tear It Off", "I Got That Feelin'" and "Skanless". LP, Vinyl record album

Get On Down, 1996/2018. New Copy ... $25.99 28.98
It's been more than 20 years, but the Doctor is in! "Octagon Octagon" is the first new track by the legendary trio of Kool Keith, DJ Qbert and producer Dan The Automator working together under the Octagon name in a couple decades, and it's a solid return to form. You know they have faith in the new track when they're pairing it with their own most classic track "Blue Flowers" – one of the most celebrated hip hop tracks of the late 1990s – as remixed by the great Prince Paul! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Amazing die-cut picture disc, too – with the classic original design by Pushead!)

DSP (Dynamic Syncopation)In The Red ... LP
Ninja Tune, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP ... $14.99
Dynamic Syncopation returns, dropping another slice of hard hitting UK hip hop, recruiting the cream of the crop in underground MC's to bless the mic for them. It's a bit ironic that we have to look to Great Britain for raw, funky beats with straight ahead lyrics and on beat flow (all right, most of the MC's are from the States), but that must be the state of Hip Hop in the new millenium. Vocals by Mass Influence, Ev.on, Dell Donahue, Apathy, Phi Life Cypher, Chill Rob G, Juice Aleem and Def Tex. 14 tracks, counting the skits, including "Systematic", "My Verse First" and "No Regrets". Funky 4 Plus 1That's The Joint (voc, inst) ... 12-inch
Sugar Hill, 1980. Near Mint- ... $19.99
One of our favorite grooves from the classic years of Sugar Hill Records – a killer cut based around Cheryl Lynn's "To Be Real" – with the original groove slamming nicely on the bottom, as Funky 4 Plus 1 trade lines over the top! The track's filled with classic rhymes from the old school – and is one of the few from the time that's never grown old! 12-inch, Vinyl record

JaylibChampion Sound ... LP
Stones Throw, 2003. Very Good+ 2LP ... $19.99
Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. To Detroit", "McNasty Filth" with Frank-n-Dank, "Nowadayz", "Champion Sound", "The Red", "Heavy", "Raw S*!t" with Kweli, "The Official", "The Heist", "The Mission", "React" with Quasimodo, "The Exclusive" with Percee P, "Survival Test", "Starz" and "No Games". Drum Drops, 1978. Very Good+ ... $19.99
A second volume of nice drum beats for production. Like the first, this one features a spoken intro, then goes into a variety of different beats, each with it's own flavor, ready for you to sample or go to work cutting up. This volume has a couple of especially dope beats, like the "Country Rock" beat, which despite it's name has a nice funk to it, with a tight sidestick on the snare, plus some more uptempo beats for you club kids, like "Samba Disco", "Pulse Disco", "Jazz Fusion" and the popping "Syncopated Funk". 10 beats in all. The amazing debut of those most hyperactive of the Native Tongues, the short-lived, ultra fresh Leaders Of The New School! Busta & Co. splintered apart after just two albums, but this will always be a shiny trophy in the mantle with the all time freshest East Coast hip hop. It sounds great to this day, particularly those Eric "Vietnam" Sadler cuts. Unfiltered portraits of the artist formerly known as Red Pill – delivering the goods under his own name on a solid set for the Mello Music Group! Real life, self searching and personal statement making hip hop from a voice rooted in classic 90s school craft – not so much with a neo-classic sound as much as a strong commitment to beats, rhymes and life experience. Good stuff! Includes production by Nolan The Ninja, Apollo Brown, L'Orange, Onra and Exile – and given the self-protrait mission the guest rhymes kept to a minimum, with just a couple worthy appearances, courtesy Verbal Kent and Fashawn. Titles include "Self Portrait", "Stories", "Design Flaw", "Lazy Buddies", "Escape Plan", "Bottom Feeders" w/ Fashawn, "Barfly", "What Happens Next", "Mom" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Beat Generation (UK), 2003. Near Mint- 2LP ... $14.99
BBE keeps up their flawless track record, propping up yet another of hip hop's finest producers in their terrific Beat Generation series, this time spotlighting the man who's name graced every other dope underground single from the late 90s onward. And as you might hope for, he's fully in his element here, spanning the full spectrum of modern beat wizardry, but with his signature touch on the filtered samples and smooth, tight beats – a sound that looks back on the sophisticated fusion of CTI, Dexter Wansel and the Mizell Brothers and integrates it into contemporary soul and hip hop deftly. Guest spots read like a new groove who's who, with everyone from longtime collaborators like Apani B Fly, Ticklah and The Jigmastas to members of Soulive and Shaun Escoffery taking a turn. 16 tracks in all, including "Drive", "Tune You Out", "Galactic Soul", "Idols", "All Up In It", "You Got To Live", "Rock (Unplugged)", "Fly Or Burn", "Music In Me (Come Alive)" and "The Originator". Fess GrandioseFront Room Methodology ... LP
Etc, 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 18.00
Unpretentiously excellent beatcraft from Chicago's Fess Grandiose – it's NOT all in the name, Fess delivers an instrumentals LP that's great in ways that are understated and easygoing rather than lofty or bombastic – and mesmerizing all the way. Fess is a veteran of the Chicago live beat scene, hosting and playing at showcases and residencies in clubs and house parties that thrive on spontaneity. Crafting album length listening experiences is such a different game than playing to the heads in the room, it's really impressive how solidly Fess succeeds in both realms. He builds up from a compelling beat, often with a bit soul jazzy keyboard atmosphere and subtle vocal samples, from there taking things wherever he wants to go, be it minimalist head nodding instrumental hip hop or a looser, kind of dreamier vibe. Impressive stuff! Includes "Son Shine", "All Dope People", "Cicero", "Stepout", "Jaded...", "Good Steez", "Waaataaa", "Loose Groove", "Here For You", "Thai Food From Chinatown", "Mood Groove", "Escape To LA", "Bang", "Kimball Hose" and more. Debut project from Chicago producer Icytwat – and profane as the name, cover and they rhymes are there's a diverse, skillful craft that covers some pretty wide terrain – from the heavy atmospheric hip hip soul of "Clouds" with Kyeoshin, the piano and chimes laced title track and lots more more – ultimately really impressive on the production side. Also includes "Don Juan" with $ilk Money, "Flodgin", "Shame", "Fin", "Z4 Music", "Pastel Talk" with Indigochildrick & $ilk Money and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Hand-numbered limited edition of 500 copies – on "milk white" colored vinyl. Sold out via the distributor...get it while it's gettable!)
