J Dilla (Jay Dee)Donuts ... LP
Stones Throw, 2005. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 23.98
The classic batch of instrumentals from J Dilla – one that strongly transcends the hip hop genre – and perhaps his rawest, and most adventurous listening experience ever! The loopy soul samples, rich synth/electro shine, and thumping bass and soul beats that Dilla largely made his name on are laced throughout, but he also takes things a step into stranger territory – with spacey elements that buzz as much as they groove! The cuts are never less than soulful and funky, and never really steps into his peer Madlib's brand of the weeded out style, either. We love how raw this all feels, too! It's easily identifiable as the work of Jay Dee, but at the same time, wholly unpredictable! One of the best releases that Stone's Throw ever released – instrumental or vocal! Includes "Donuts (Intro & Outro)", "Workinonit", "Waves", "Light My Fire", "People", "Mash", "Airworks", "Lightworks", "Stepson Of The Clapper", "One Eleven", "Don't Cry", "Geek Down", "Thunder", "Gobstopper", "Walkinonit", "U-Love", "Last Donut Of The Night" and more. JaylibChampion Sound ... LP
Stones Throw, 2003. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 22.99
Damn! The MASSIVE collaborative album from the dynamic duo of Madlib and J Dilla! Essentially, Madlib handles the production on the even numbers in the set with Dilla on the vocals, and the roles are reversed on the odd numbers. Each producer does his own thing, as only he can do it – Madlib brings the funky sampler genius – and Dilla rocks the thumping Detroit hip hop soul crunch. A number of guest rhymers step to the mic, including Talib Kweli, Percee P, Frank-N-Dank & Guilty Simpson, and the flow is seamless. Not only was this one of the best hip hop albums of '03, it also has a dyed-in-the-wool classic production style, and it sounds just as great a few years later! So very highly recommended! Tracks include "L.A. To Detroit", "McNasty Filth" with Frank-n-Dank, "Nowadayz", "Champion Sound", "The Red", "Heavy", "Raw S*!t" with Kweli, "The Official", "The Heist", "The Mission", "React" with Quasimodo, "The Exclusive" with Percee P, "Survival Test", "Starz" and "No Games". ✨✧ Madvillain (Madlib & MF Doom)Madvillainy ... LP
Stones Throw, 2004. New Copy 2 LPs ... Just Sold Out!
A Stones Throw sci-fi masterpiece – one that was destined for greatness from conception, but we're still pretty well blown away by the final product! MC Doom and beatmaster Madlib couldn't be better suited for a collaboration. As much as we've dug the best of Doom's material of the last couple years, he's always needed a good editor – and Madlib brings nothing but the best sci-fi sound collages, scratches, and titanically driving funky beats – the grooved out 70s side of 'Lib's personality is wisely given a powder, while in the company of a vocal presence that's as insane as Doom. When it's not so pounding, the sound drops into the kinda gloomy, murky crackle of earliest Wu Tang. This is easily the best album of its kind since Dr. Octagon tore the flood gates open. Essential!!! "The Illest Villains", "Accordian", "Bistro", "Raid" feat Medaphoar, "America's Most Blunted", "Rainbows", "Curls", "Money Folder", "Hardcore Hustle","Fancy Clown", "Supervillain", "All Caps", "Rhinestone Cowboy" and more. Mndsgn second delicious batch of Snaxx – not to be confused with the earlier set titled Snax, this being an xx-tra excellent follow up – cooking up heavy beats, dreamy psych atmospherics, and surprisingly deft use of tinkering bits of piano and other touches that give it just that added bit soul jazz reverent atmosphere. As impressive a blend of compelling beatcraft and moody atmposphere as anything he's done to date. In a way, this is the first album of it's kind in the history of hip hop. The Stones Throw label has never made secret of just how deeply influenced they are by Galt's oeuvre – and this LP is not only a great show of respect to the composer, it's the best work Oh No's done to date. MF Doom and Madlib, two of the most ubiquitous characters in underground hip hop – hell, perhaps THE most ubiquitous characters in underground hip hop, pair up for an outing on Stones Throw! "Money Folder" is Doom's real showpiece of the couple of tracks here. Metal Face kicks his gravelly, atomically charged word bombs over some really hot start & sto(m)p beats by 'Lib. "America's Most Blunted" is the DJ's game, with a string of strange samples and soundtrack vibe with a Cut Chemist feel. Madlib's knob twirlin' and wheel spinnin' on the two main cuts and remixes is much more in his funk beats and wacked samples guise than the mad jazz vibe he's been rocking on other recent projects. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Stones Throw have done it again – breaking down boundaries between funk, hip hop, and turntable culture, offering up this brilliant 4 track ep from Yesterday's New Quintet! The album's got a mix of breaks, beats, and jazzy riffs that feels like Tribe Called Quest going through the Blue Note editing floor, circa 1971. Stones Throw, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Anderson .Paak and Knxwledge's full length debut as a duo – and the most triumphant Stones Throw record in years! To this (still early) point in young .Paak's career, his voice has already proved to be a prime vessel for natural grit and mood, if not gamechanger songwriting, best paired with crackling, funk-steeped hip hop soul production. That's the case whether he's producing himself, working with a giant like Dr. Dre, or paired as he is here with Knxledge. Knx's production is a perfect backdrop – beats out front in the mix, classic Cali sample funk and soul framing the vocals – with a lingering haze holding it all together amazingly well! Intentional or not, Yes Lawd channels earlier Stones Throw classic LPs like Jaylib and Madvillain in the way it pairs distinctive contemporary talents for a joint duo effort, and after .Paak's solo shot Malibu, it's his second potential classic in a single year! Includes "Livvin", "Wngs", "What More Can I Say", "Kutless", "Lyk Dis", "Can't Stop", "Get Bigger", "Scared Money", "Suede", "Starlite", "Sidepiece", "Jodi", "Link Up", "Another Time", "Fkku" and more. Sparely funky, yet heavily atmospheric hip hop productions from unsung titan Kankick – made up mostly of late 90s material – and it's right up with some of our favorite leftfield producers of the period! ✨✧ MadlibShades Of Blue – Madlib Invades Blue Note ... CD
Blue Note, 2003. Used ... $3.99
Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. ✨✧ Ohmega WattsFind ... CD
Ubiquity, 2005. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fresh batch of warm, wonderful hip hop from producer/MC Ohmega Watts – a block rockin' set that couldn't be more welcome in these days of morose contemporary hip hop! If there's any justice in the world, Find will catapult the Ohmega Watts name into the upper echelon of respected contemporaries such as the J5, Blackalicious, and the Stones Throw set. The record's an uptempo, funky stormer with songs that recall the best early sunshine from of the Pharcyde and Black Sheep, plus beats and production that mirror the propulsive thump of Pete Rock and the sprawling atmosphere of Prince Paul. We don't throw those names around indiscriminately, kids. Ohmega earns it! Tracks include "Where It All Started" with DJ DNA, the great single "That Sound" feat Lightheaded, Noelle of Rebirth and the Procussions, "A Request", "Mind Power", "Groovin' On Sunshine", "Floor Rock", "Move!" and more.
