✨✧ ColdcutLet Us Play (CD/CD ROM) ... CD
Ninja Tune, 1997. Used 2 CDs ... $2.99
Matt Black & Jonathan Moore were some of the first to peddle the non-hip hop remixologist tip back in the late 80s – and 10 years later, they're still on the top of their craft with this complicated set of grooves, breaks, and turntable tricks for Ninja Tune! The set includes the tracks "Noah's Toilet", "Atomic Moog 2000 (Post Nuclear Afterlife Lounge Mix)", "Music 4 No Musicians", "Space Journey", "Timber", "Every Home A Prison", "Cloned Again", and "More Beats & Pieces (Daddy rips it up mix)". Includes audio CD and CD rom. (New Grooves, Hip Hop) CD

DJ SemtexHip Hop Raised Me – Updated Edition ... Book
Thames & Hudson, 2022. New Copy ... $31.99 45.00
One of the most lavish, loving books on hip hop that we've ever seen – a huge volume that manages to be a history of rap music, a photo book, a guide to key albums, and also a personal journey as well – all served up with a vivid, non-stop array of images that make the whole thing even more of a visual delight than digging in the crates! The volume is huge – stuffed with over 1000 images, most in color – photos of album covers, street art, hip hop DJs and MCs, and countless other subjects – all presented in loose chronological order, alongside a history and evolution of the music, plus a timeline of key records and moments – all guided by some personal reflections by the author as well. Chuck D gives the book some huge props in the intro – and this updated volume is a heavy 446 pages, in a softcover edition, filled with images throughout. (Books, Hip Hop) Book

Freestyle FellowshipTo Whom It May Concern ... LP
Sun/Key Systems Recording, 1991. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $39.99 45.99
A really great album from the LA scene of the early 90s – very different than most of the west coast work of the period, and much more in the spirit of some of the east coast work from the Native Tongues posse! The group features early work from Mikah 9, Self Jupiter, PEACE, and Aceyalone – all working in a really inventive mix of jazzy and inventive samples that come together in a great way – leaner than the layering of Q Tip, and not nearly as polished as work of its type would sound on bigger labels. There's almost a "what if" vibe to the record – glimpse at a less thuggish, posturing west coast that never full came to be – on titles that include "We Are The Freestyle Fellowship", "My Fantasy", "7th Seal", "Let's Start Over", "Sunshine Men", "Physical Form", "120 Seconds", "We Will Not Tolerate", "It's On", "Sike", "5 O'Clock Follies", "Legal Alien", "Convolutions", "Jupiter's Journey", "For No Reason", and "Here I Am". Kendrick LamarMr Morale & The Big Steppers (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Top Dawg Ent./Interscope, 2022. New Copy 2LP ... $44.99 47.99
Kendrick Lamarr waited quite a long time to give the world a follow-up to his classic DAMN – and for good reason too, as the rapper's been on a long personal journey that's documented strongly on the record! The Kendrick heard here is much more introspective than before – and that's saying a lot, given his previous approach – and tunes here deal with issues of personal struggle, healing, and redemption – but all with the kind of sharp edges and sense of fragility that keeps the record from ever feeling to smug or full of itself. Opinions started flying about the record right from the start, and there's plenty here to build your own understanding too – on titles that include "Father Time", "Die Hard", "United In Grief", "We Cry Together", "Count Me Out", "Purple Hearts", "Rich Spirit", "Crown", "Savior", and "Silent Hill". Tsutchie/Force Of NatureSamurai Champloo – Masta ... LP
KO Records/Flying Dog (Japan), 2004. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $59.99 79.99 About June 15, 2024
Heavy sounds from two key forces on the Japanese scene at the start of the century – both united here in a fantastic batch of instrumentals for Samurai Champloo! The work at times almost feels as if there's been a return Pacific journey of some of the elements that influenced the Wu-Tang back in the 90s – mixed with some of the warmer soulful currents of the Nujabes generation too – all delivered at a level that's very much a high cut above instrumental hip hop, and use of these styles in a soundtrack! Titles include "Mist", "Vagrancy", "Raw Material", "Dry", "Tubed", "I Sighed", "Sincerely", "New Dimension", "Sneak Chamber", and "Silver Children". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Killer MikeMichael (gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Loma Vista, 2023. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most powerful, personal album that Killer Mike ever recorded – a set that took many years to put together, and which definitely represents the journey the rapper was experiencing at the time! Mike channels some of his own experience to deal with the larger issues that are facing so many black Americans in recent years – and while some of his resolutions are definitely his own, they are delivered with a sense of power that certainly resonates at a much larger level too! Production includes some great work from No ID, plus Cool & Dre, Twhy Xclusive, and Little Shalimar – and the album has features from Ty Dolla Sign, Andre 3000, Jagged Edge, and El-P. Titles include "Motherless", "Something For Junkies", "Exit 9", "Two Days", "Spaceship Views", "Slummer", "High & Holy", "Don't Let The Devil", "Down By Law", and "Shed Tears". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited gold vinyl pressing.)

✨✧ Tyler The CreatorCall Me If You Get Lost (with bonus track & poster) ... LP
Columbia, 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Grammy-winning work from Tyler The Creator – a record that's got a darker, moodier vibe than some of his previous work – very much the journey in sound that you might guess from the title – complete with narration from DJ Drama that does a great job of holding the whole thing together! Along the way, Tyler runs into Pharrell Williams, Lil Wayne, Ty Dolla Sign, and a number of other guests – amidst titles that include "Lumberjack", "WusYaName", "Corso", "Hot Wind Blows", "RunItUp", "Manifesto", "Sweet/I Thought You Wanted To Dance", "Lemonhead", "Juggernaut", "Safari", and "Wilshire". ✨✧ Kero OneWindmills Of My Soul (with bonus track) ... LP
Plug Research/P-Vine (Japan), 2006. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A gem of a record from the mid oughties – but one that's got all the charm of some of the Native Tongues classics from farther back – thanks to a superb mix of jazz and hip hop from MC/producer Kero One! The album's maybe Kero's greatest calling card – a set that really does more with less – as the instrumentation draws just the right bits from some of the energy going on in the neo soul underground, including live keyboard and trumpet solos – blended with wonderful lyrics that push a positive agenda, but without hitting you over the head too much. The whole thing's got an instant classic vibe, and maybe sounds even better as the years go on than many of its contemporaries – with tracks that include "Give Thanks", "Musical Journey", "My Story", "In A Dream", "Ain't That Somethin", "Tempted", "In All The Wrong Places", "Keep It Alive!", "The Cycle Repeats", "Fly Fly Away", "It's A New Day", and "Check The Blueprints". Japanese pressing features a bonus track – "My Story (DJ Mitsu rmx)". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Prince PaulPrince Among Thieves ... CD
Tommy Boy, 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
A hip hop masterpiece from Prince Paul – his second album as a solo act, but one that builds on years of top-shelf experience in the east coast scene – including his roots with Stetsasonic and production of De La Soul! The record came up at a time when there seemed to be a new sense of self-awareness in hip hop – maybe not a postmodern sensibility, but a gentle play between the real role of the artist and imagined pop presence – handled here by Paul with a lot more care than most, and presented in a concept album format that's full of great surprises along the way! Breeze Brewin of Jugganauts handles the main lyrics, but the story has lots of famous guests along the way – almost a Wizard Of Oz sort of journey that includes Kool Keith, Big Daddy Kane, Chubb Rock, Biz Markie, and many others. Titles include "MC Hustler", "The Other Line", "Pain", "Steady Slobbin", "War Party", "Weapon World", "Handle Your Time", "The Men In Blue", and "Mood For Love". CD

✨✧ RedmanDare Iz A Darkside ... CD
Rush, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
Redman at an early peak – raw cosmic funk-steeped hip hop from the wildly creative, gritty-voiced man himself! Like a lot of the greatest 90s hip hop, there's a strong George Clinton influence to the beats – but the thick atmosphere is really on another level – then and now, there's nothing exactly like Redman's flow, which is crazy and charismatic at the same time. The great Erick Sermon co-produces and probably had a big hand in keeping it funky and from going to far into the murky deep end, it's a straight up classic to this day. Tracks include "Dr Trevis", "Bobyahed2dis", "Journey Throo Da Darkside", "A Million And 1 Buddah Spots", "Noorotic", "Cosmic Slop", "Rockafella (R.I.P.)", "Rockafella", "Can't Wait", "Wuditlooklike", Sooperman Luva II", "We Run N.Y.", "Da Journee", "Slide And Rock On" and more. 19 tracks in all.
