It's hard to imagine a more exciting single from the early 80s – as both sides of this one completely changed our way of listening to music, and set the tone for a generation of sounds to come. "Moments In Love" is that breathy slow stepper, presented here in long and short versions – and "Beat Box" is the hip hop inspired groover that helped these guys win Best New Black Artist from Rolling Stone in 1984, in spite of their non-blackness. The title song from one of the early hip hop movie classics! The track's an ode to the film's slain graffitti writer Raheim, and one of the last dope Melle Mel/Furious Five tracks. 12-inch, Vinyl record
Unlike the normal high-energy Doug E Fresh style, as you might guess from the title "Play This Only At Night" utilizes the creepy theme from the Phantasm soundtrack! 12-inch, Vinyl record
Early bootleg recording of Flash & the Furious Five, with an old school beat mix on the flip, one that's about as rough as you can get and still be dope, reported by some to actually by Afrika Bambataa and Afrika Islam. It may seem a little primitive by today's standards, but it's an essential portrait from the formative years of hip hop. 12-inch, Vinyl record
An offshoot of the 4AD rock scene from the UK, this number sampled Rakim from "Paid In Full" to great effect – and it made quite a bit of sense that the track was issued on 4th & Broadway in the US (probably also a legal move, so that the label wouldn't sue 4AD for copping a sample from one of their artists! The record features a bit of scratching by CJ Mackintosh, with a bubbly beat that made it huge on both sides of the Atlantic. (Soul, Hip Hop)12-inch, Vinyl record
A great mid 80s Pop Art release, and even though Marley Marl gets credit for mixing this single it's basically Roxanne rhyming over the Biz beatboxing with some canned crowd noise in the background. 12-inch, Vinyl record
"Gold Digger" is another great single from Kanye West – with a minimalist funky clappin' beat track and a Ray Charles sample – plus an appearance by Ray-incarnate Jamie Foxx. The subject matter couldn't be more tired, but Kanye's vocal approach is still fresh, and the production is nice! The subject matter of the flip "Diamonds From Sierra Leone" is anything BUT tired – and this remix features a rhyme by Jay-Z! 12-inch, Vinyl record
