✨✧ DOCNo One Can Do It Better ... CD
Ruthless/Atlantic, 1989. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic album by the DOC from the glory days of Ruthless Records – really up there in excellence with NWA in the gritty west coast canon – with timeless production by Dr. Dre! Nice mic skills paired with tight, funky production from Dre when he still hungry and on the ascent. 13 tracks including "The Formula", "It's Funky Enough", "Mind Blowin", "Lend Me An Ear", "Portrait Of A Master Piece", "Whirlwind Pyramid", "No One Can Do It Better", "The DOC & The Doctor" and "The Grand Finale" featuring Ren and Ice Cube. Gnarls BarkleyOdd Couple ... CD
Atlantic/Downtown, 2008. Used ... $1.99
A round two knockout for Gnarls Barkley – an album we think is better than the landmark St Elsewhere LP – boisterous pop art & soul from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo! We were slightly trepid when the Odd Couple was announced, fearing a hasty attempt to rekindle the magic that clearly caught everyone by surprise a couple years ago, but that worry is squashed. This is a near masterpiece, kids! Incredibly deep and impressively spun from obscure sound library records, Italian soundtracks, and all kinds of moddish samples by Danger Mouse – with warmly scratchy vocals by Cee-Lo that are as fresh as anything he's ever done. Again, he's laughing in the face of darkness and depression, and somehow making a party out of it! You won't find another mainstream success story this year that's so fun and charming on a superficial level – while truthfully dark and troubled if you focus some on the lyrics. Hype be damned, this one's amazing! Tracks include "Charity Case", "Who's Gonna Save My Soul", "Going On", "Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)", "Would Be Killer", "Open Book", "Whatever", "Surprise", "No Time Soon", "She Knows", "Blind Mary", "Neighbors", "A Little Better". Nappy RootsWooden Leather ... CD
Atlantic, 2003. Used ... $2.99
Nappy Roots hugely improves on the debut with album number two! The debut was a bit candy-coated for our hip hop taste, but the Nappy Roots take a pretty surprising deep/dark turn on Wooden Leather. We wouldn't have thought to include these guys with our favorite Dirty South crews before, but damned if this isn't our most pleasant pop-skewing hip hop album since Black Eyed Peas dropped Elephunk a couple months ago! Tracks include "Good God Almighty", "Nappy Roots Day", Push On", "Roun' The Globe", "Lac Dogs & Hog", "Sick & Tired", "These Walls", "War/Peace" and more. CD
