Gnarls BarkleyOdd Couple ... CD
Atlantic/Downtown, 2008. Used ... $1.99
A round two knockout for Gnarls Barkley – an album we think is better than the landmark St Elsewhere LP – boisterous pop art & soul from Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo! We were slightly trepid when the Odd Couple was announced, fearing a hasty attempt to rekindle the magic that clearly caught everyone by surprise a couple years ago, but that worry is squashed. This is a near masterpiece, kids! Incredibly deep and impressively spun from obscure sound library records, Italian soundtracks, and all kinds of moddish samples by Danger Mouse – with warmly scratchy vocals by Cee-Lo that are as fresh as anything he's ever done. Again, he's laughing in the face of darkness and depression, and somehow making a party out of it! You won't find another mainstream success story this year that's so fun and charming on a superficial level – while truthfully dark and troubled if you focus some on the lyrics. Hype be damned, this one's amazing! Tracks include "Charity Case", "Who's Gonna Save My Soul", "Going On", "Run (I'm A Natural Disaster)", "Would Be Killer", "Open Book", "Whatever", "Surprise", "No Time Soon", "She Knows", "Blind Mary", "Neighbors", "A Little Better". Klein & MBOFirst . . . ... LP
Atlantic, 1983. Very Good- ... $19.99
Weirdo electro pop from the early 80s – with a groove that's right in the beatbox mode, adding in plenty of linn drums and keyboard riffs that sound like they're lifted right off an instrumental side by Newcleus! The vocals are the weakest link – but they back off nicely for extended periods, and the track "MBO Theme" has no vocals at all! A nice one for the poppin' and breakin' crowd – and with the tracks "The Big Apple", "I Love You", and "Dirty Talk". (Soul, Hip Hop) LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a worn and splitting spine with a sicker in one corner.)

MC LyteLyte As A Rock ... LP
First Priority/Atlantic, 1988. Near Mint- ... $29.99
Lyte raised the bar for female rappers on this late 80s album with her mic skills and lyrical finesse that took female MC's into a whole new realm, beyond "Roxanne" answer tracks. She takes on Roxanne Shante on "10% Dis", a classic battle track that sparked a great answer cycle in its own right. And the production, mostly by Audio Two is pure minimalist hip hop beatmaking, while the King Of Chill comes correct with the dopest side stick in the history of programmed beats on "Paper Thin", and Prince Paul goes nuts with the horn stabs on one of his earlier beats, "MC Lyte Likes Swingin'". 10 tracks in all, this LP also includes "I Cram To Understand You", "Kickin 4 Brooklyn", "Lyte As A Rock", "Lyte Thee MC", "I Am Woman", "Lyte Vs. Vanna Whyte" and "I Am Woman". LP, Vinyl record album

Missy ElliottLose Control (radio, explicit, inst)/On & On (radio, explicit, inst) ... 12-inch
Atlantic, 2005. Near Mint- ... $2.99
Two great recipes from the Cookbook LP! "Lose Control" is another masterstroke from Missy – who we're quite comfortable in declaring as probably the single greatest mainstream singles artist of the 00's – a self-produced bouncer featuring Ciara and Fat Man Scoop. "On & On" is as good or maybe even better than the a-side – another one of those Neptunes' variations of their patented deep-fried robot sounds that we would be sick of by now if each new hit didn't sound hotter than than the previous one! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Nappy RootsWooden Leather ... CD
Atlantic, 2003. Used ... $2.99
Nappy Roots hugely improves on the debut with album number two! The debut was a bit candy-coated for our hip hop taste, but the Nappy Roots take a pretty surprising deep/dark turn on Wooden Leather. We wouldn't have thought to include these guys with our favorite Dirty South crews before, but damned if this isn't our most pleasant pop-skewing hip hop album since Black Eyed Peas dropped Elephunk a couple months ago! Tracks include "Good God Almighty", "Nappy Roots Day", Push On", "Roun' The Globe", "Lac Dogs & Hog", "Sick & Tired", "These Walls", "War/Peace" and more. CD

✨✧ DOCNo One Can Do It Better ... LP
Atlantic/Get On Down, 1989. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The classic debut album by the DOC, from the glory days of Ruthless Records – one of the few records on the label to live up to the brilliance of NWA at their height! Dr Dre handles the production here – and there's a razor-sharp edge that really matches DOC's wordcraft – as powerful as the rest of the Ruthless crew, but in a different way too – almost more sophisticated, with the messaged buried a bit more in the lyrics. Titles include "The Formula", "It's Funky Enough", "Mind Blowin", "Lend Me An Ear", "Portrait Of A Master Piece", "Whirlwind Pyramid", "No One Can Do It Better", and "The DOC & The Doctor" – plus "The Grand Finale", which features guest work from Ren and Ice Cube. Little BrotherChittlin Circuit 1.5 – Unreleased Tracks, B-Sides & Remixes ... CD
Fastlife, 2005. Used ... $8.99
A tasty helping of material from Justus League flagship Little Brother – who lit the underground ablaze a couple years ago with their debut on ABB – and hope to do the same in '05 when the Minstrel Show drops on Atlantic! Chitlin Circuit features unreleased tracks, remixes and b-sides – largely produced by 9th Wonder (natch) and Khrysis, with some guest turns by Nicolay and Young Guru. There's some damn strong s**t here – featuring the crew's signature soulful and string-laden funk production – with the tougher wordplay they've been rockin' in the couple of years since The Listening! 18 tracks in all: "War", "Third Party" feat Joe Scudda, "Honorable" feat Chaundon, "Yo-Yo (rmx)", "Nighttime Maneuvers" (rmx), "Altitudes", "Welcome To Durham" featuring Big Daddy Kane, "Flash And Flare" feat LEGACY, "Take It There", "The Beginning" feat Yahzarah and more!
