Notorious BIGLife After Death ... LP
Bad Boy, 1997. Near Mint- 3LP ... $59.99
The second album from Biggie, and a set that was instantly poised to catapult him to superstardom – even before his tragic death ended up doing that before the release of the record! And yes, the title's a bit cryptic – and given the fact that the material came out after BIG was shot, it might seem like a cash-in collection of left-behind tracks – yet it's not that at all. The long path to the album's creation represents a step forward to almost build a bridge between underground hip hop and mainstream soul – maybe in a way that would have calmed some of the coastal beefs that were taking place at the time – as the late, great one works here with an array of guests from both the worlds of hip hop and R&B – 112, Jay-Z, R Kelly, Puff Daddy, Lil Kim, Too Short, and others – in a classic set of tracks that includes "Hypnotize", "Kick In the Door", "Mo Money Mo Problems", "Notorious Thugs", "Going Back To Cali", "Sky's The Limit", "Miss U", "Ten Crack Commandments", 'What's Beef", and "Nasty Boy". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited clear vinyl RSD issue from 2014 – #1650. Includes the insert.)

Tyler The CreatorWolf (pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Odd Future/Legacy, 2014. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $36.99 37.99
Wolf sounds almost pretty from the first few seconds of the intro, but soon after the soft opening, the gritty beat drops, the gravely/growling vocals kick in, and the wild mix of comical and caustic rhymes let you know good and well that Tyler The Creator's back. Guests include Hodgy Beats, Frank Ocean, Domo Genius, Earl Sweatshirt and other expected heads – plus some wildcards/surprises turns by Laetitia Sadier, Erykah Badu and others. Includes "Wolf", "Jamba" with Hodgy Beats, "Cowboy", "Awkward", "Domo23", "Answer", "Slater" and "48" with Frank Ocean, " "Partyisntover/Campfire/Bimmer" with Frank Ocean & Laetitia Sadier, "Parking Lot" with Mike G & Casey Veggies, "Tamale", "Lone" and more. ✨✧ Lupe FiascoFood & Liquor ... LP
Atlantic, 2006. Sealed 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The official full length debut from Lupe Fiasco – another wholly unique Chicago MC who's gotten the runaround from seemingly every major label in the biz – and a record that lives up to the long-building hype! Frankly, we were scared almost immediately when we heard the description "skate rap" applied to "Kick, Push" – only to find our fears unfounded. Lupe's only going to be himself – which is what makes him such a strong MC (other than the masterful breath control) – and that individualistic approach is proving to be Chicago's gift to mainstream hip hip. The Neptunes provide one of their best productions of the past couple years for "I Gotcha" – but the soundtracky productions by Soundtrakk (natch) are even better. Other tracks include "Real" feat Sara Green, "Just Might Be OK" feat Gemini, "Kick, Push", "The Instrumental" feat Jonah Matranga, "He Say She Say" feat Gemini & Sarah Green, "Sunshine", "Daydreamin'" feat Jill Scott, "The Cool" (produced by Kanye) , "Hurt Me Soul", "Pressure" feat Jay-Z, "American Terrorist" feat Matthew Santos, "The Cool", "The Emperor's Soundtrack" and more! ✨✧ NujabesOther Side Of Phase/Rainy Way Back Home/Horizon ... 12-inch
Hydeout Productions (Japan), 2024. New Copy (pic cover)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare slice of Nujabes – his reworking of the Samurai Champloo theme, but in this really stripped down, moody instrumental – very nice piano solo in the middle, over beats that move back and forth with the "phase" you might expect! "Rainy Way Back Home" has more of that great piano over beats – one of the real trademark Nujabes moves – but also has maybe a bit more hip hop kick at the bottom, and these buried snippets of what sound like turntable work! "Horizon" is great too – longer than both, really jazzy on the piano tip, and with this kicking rhythm that almost likes the whole cut sound like some of the clubby jazzy piano groups that have sprung up on the Tokyo scene after the passing of Nujabes! 12-inch, Vinyl record

One of THE landmark hip hop albums – and the full length debut of great Tribe Called Quest! We hardly need to tell you about this classic – but it will always bear repeating. De La Soul might have kicked the door open on leftfield, anything goes artistry about a year or so earlier, but their friends and fellow Native Tongues Tribe's debut was a crucial reminder that the east coast was spinning out of one of the greatest creative growth spurts in hip hop history at the time. Pure excellence. Tracks include "Luck Of Lucien", "Footprints", "I Left My Wallet In El Segundo", "Bonita Applebaum", "Can I Kick It?", "Rhythm (Devoted To The Art Of Moving Butts)", "Mr Muhammad", "Description Of A Fool" andmore seminal, jazzy middle school tracks! ✨✧ Lupe FiascoLupe Fiasco's The Cool (with bonus DVD) ... CD
Atlantic, 2007. Used CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
Lupe Fiasco takes his style a kick & a push deeper than the perceived sunny positivity of his debut on second album The Cool – flashing some biting social criticism – and a sharp brilliance that shows he's too restless to simply coast! The clean, buzzing synth funk orchestra vibe that was a highlight of the Food & Liquor set encores here, especially on the tracks Soundtrakk produced – but the mood is a little heavier. Strong stuff in both overall quality and lyrical content, with some real standouts. F & L was no fluke – Lupe is the real thing! Titles include ""Free Chilly" feat Sarah Green & Gemstones, "Go Go Gadget Flow", "The Coolest", "Superstar" feat Matthew Santos, "Paris, Tokyo", "Hi-Definition" feat Snoop Dogg and Pooh Bear, "Gold Wathch", "Intruder Alert" feat Sarah Green, "Dumb It Down"feat Gemstones & Graham Burris, "Fighters" feat Mathew Santos and more. ✨✧ Sugarhill GangBest Of The Sugar Hill Gang ... CD
Sugar Hill/Rhino, Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mighty look at one of the first great groups in hip hop – maybe not the originators of the style, but certainly the one to get some of the biggest exposure – thanks to the work of Sugar Hill Records, and some very catchy tunes! The Sugarhill Gang were one of the key groups involved in taking the spirit of South Bronx street parties to the mainstream outside the big city – and given all the hits on the set, you can bet that they did a pretty great job – on titles that include the very long original version of "Rapper's Delight", plus "8th Wonder", "Apache", "The Lover In You", "The Word Is Out", "Girls", "Kick It Live From 9 To 5", "Livin In The Fast Lane", and "Hot Hut Summer Day". Also includes "Showdown" – which has them meeting up with The Furious Five – and "Work Work The Body", with Big Bank Hank, Kory-O, and Wonder Mike! CD

A set that goes back to the old school – but the old school of the late 80s/early 90s, not the early days of the South Bronx – in a very cool collection of cuts that bring together hip hop, club, and a bit of mainstream soul – all from a time when musical styles were really percolating together! The track list speaks for itself, and features classics that include "Back To Life" by Soul II Soul, "Too Blind To See It" by Kym Sims, "Big Fun" by Inner City, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "People Everyday (metamorphosis mix)" by Arrested Development, "They Reminisce Over You" by Pete Rock & CL Smooth, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, "Hey Ya" by Outkast, "What U Waitin 4" by Jungle Brothers, "Soul Flower" by Brand New Heavies with Pharcyde, "Push It" by Salt N Pepa, "Can I Kick It" by Tribe Called Quest, "Apparently Nothin (soul river mix)" by Young Disciples, "Always There (David Morales mix)" by Incognito, "Groove Is In The Heart" by Deee-Lite, and "Feel So Good" by Mase. ✨✧ Kid N Play2 Hype (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Select, 1988. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Maybe not the hypest record of the 80s, but a set that's pretty darn great overall – and which really helped find a way to reintroduce the vibe of the early street party scene back into the feel of hip hop on wax! Kid and Play aren't out to change the world with their politics or set a new agenda for the music – but working with great Herby Luv Bug production, they keep things nice and lively throughout – at a level that really fits with some of the best Select Records releases that made the world of hip hop pretty darn fresh at the time! The whole thing's an instant party throughout – with cuts that include "Brother Man Get Hip", "Soul Man", "Damn That DJ", "2Hype", "Can You Dig That", "Last Night", "Do The Kid N Play Kick Step", and the classic "Do This My Way" – a mini-production masterpiece on its own! Yo!/P-Vine (Japan), 1991. New Copy (pic cover)... $16.99 19.99
The 7" single debut of two tracks from these Oakland underground legends! The Action Packed Gangsters deliver a nice lean groove for "Takin It To The Streets" – a mix of skittish beats and spare bassline that really serves things well lyrically, and which almost has an early Philly hip hop vibe! "Daily Routine" has that classic "Think" groove kicked up more, which does plenty for the lyrical power of the tune too! Both cuts great – and well-deserving of this treatment. 7-inch, Vinyl record

GoapeleEven Closer ... CD
Columbia/Skyblaze, 2002. Used ... $5.99
Heavy soul from the Bay Area scene – a fantastic set of tracks from the enigmatic Goapele! Goapele's an underground singer with a really righteous feel – and she's not afraid to use some heavy beats and funk to send her message home. The set's got a really well integrated instrumental feel – shifting slightly in style from track to track, but always with a positive and progressive approach only serves to push Goapele's lyrics all that much deeper. No softness here – just a mad kicking approach that's made us give the Bay Area another listen these days! Features guest work by Soulive, Pep Love, Zion I, and Casual – and titles include "It Takes More", "Closer", "Ease Your Mind", "Got It", "Romantic", "Too Much The Same", "Catch 22", "Salvation", and "Back To You". The fantastic first album from LL Cool J – one that really kicked off a whole new school of hip hop – the early Def Jam era! Radio features straight up excellent early Def production from Rick Rubin and loads of tight tracks from LL – whose charisma continued to flow for the next couple of decades – even if his later records could never approach this benchmark level. Tracks include "I Can't Live Without My Radio", "Rock The Bells", "Dangerous", "That's A Lie", "You'll Rock" and "I Can Give You More". A piece of history – and an album that changed hip hop forever!
