A really fantastic album from the Dedicated Men Of Zion – a contemporary gospel group, but one who work here with small combo backings that take us back to some of our favorite records of the early 70s – a tremendous blend of spiritual message and very down-to-earth arrangements! The quartet have some fantastic harmonies throughout, and get support from the Sacred Soul Sound Section – a funk combo who use plenty of organ and riffing guitar, which gives the heavenly vocals a nice degree of humanity – on titles that include "The Devil Don't Like It", "Lord Hold My Hand", "A Change Is Gonna Come", "I'm Going Home", "UpAbove My Head", "I'm A Soldier In God's Army", and "One River To Cross". A gospel singer, but with a great ear for soul – the mighty Rance Allen was one of the key figures to bridge the spiritual and secular worlds in the 70s! This excellent set features Rance Allen gems from his early 70s years at Stax Records – tunes that burn with all of the deep soul styles of other work on the Memphis label, but which also seem to get an extra push deep down inside, thanks to Allen's spiritual leanings. Most cuts have excellent piano and keyboards alongside the vocals – and titles include "Let The Music Get Down In Your Soul", "Ring My Bell", "UpAbove My Head", "Lying On The Truth", "Joy", "What Is This", "I Belong To You", "Ain't No Need Of Crying", "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "What A Day", and "The Painter". Jimetta Rose & The Voices Of Creation —
How Good It Is ... LP Day Dreamer (UK), 2023. New Copy ...
Out Of Stock
Jimetta Rose is a fantastic singer on her own, but this set may well be her most heavenly, most righteous record to date – as it features Rose at the head of a larger ensemble of singers – blending gospel structures with soul and spiritual jazz – all with a sound that's completely sublime all the way through! Some of the tunes here are older cuts from the world of soul and jazz, redone in a mode that's nicely different than the originals – with voices moving back and forth, trading lines, and rising together – while light rhythms keep things moving forward, yet never get in the way of the singers on the record. The approach might look like gospel, and the messages here are righteous – but in a way that's also got strong secular soul appeal too. Titles include a great remake of "Spirits UpAbove", plus the cuts "Let The Sunshine In", "How Good It Is", "Ain't Life Grand", "Operation Feed Yourself", and "Answer The Call". Some of the earliest work ever done by the young Sam Cooke – served up here in a really special package! LP1 features early gospel recordings with The Soul Stirrers – a group that featured Cooke in the lead before he went solo – with titles that include "Mean Old World", "Touch The Hem Of His Garment", "Any Day Now", "Peace In The Valley", "Were You There", and "Jesus Gave Me Water". LP2 features the famous Shrine Auditorium Concert by the group from 1955 – with the cuts "I Have A Friend Above All Others", "Be With Jesus", and "Nearer To Thee". LP3 features early demo tracks by Sam – titles that include "Lovable", "I Don't Want To Cry", "Forever", "Happy In Love", "That's All I Need To Know", and "I Need You Now".
