Mighty Clouds Of JoyKickin (with bonus tracks) ... CD
ABC/Omnivore, 1975. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
Kickin it is – as the album's way more than just the typical gospel you might expect – and is a perfect example of the way the Mighty Clouds Of Joy helped cross the bridge between secular and spiritual sounds in the 70s! The record has a groove that most other mainstream soul acts could ever hope for – served up by stellar southern producer David Crawford, and arrangements from Mike Terry – on an album that almost grooves enough for the clubs, and brings in lots of new energy to the male gospel quintet format! These guys are hardly your grandfather's gospel group – and instead get downright slinky and sexy with the way they approach the music – almost giving Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes a run for their money, on excellent cuts that include "Mighty High", "Leanin", "You Are So Beautiful", "I Got The Music In Me", "Millionaire", "Touch My Soul", and "Everything Is Love". CD features two bonus tracks – single mixes of "You Are So Beautiful" and "Mighty High". CD

✨✧ Rance AllenStax Profiles – Rance Allen ... CD
Stax/Concord, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A gospel singer, but with a great ear for soul – the mighty Rance Allen was one of the key figures to bridge the spiritual and secular worlds in the 70s! This excellent set features Rance Allen gems from his early 70s years at Stax Records – tunes that burn with all of the deep soul styles of other work on the Memphis label, but which also seem to get an extra push deep down inside, thanks to Allen's spiritual leanings. Most cuts have excellent piano and keyboards alongside the vocals – and titles include "Let The Music Get Down In Your Soul", "Ring My Bell", "Up Above My Head", "Lying On The Truth", "Joy", "What Is This", "I Belong To You", "Ain't No Need Of Crying", "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "What A Day", and "The Painter". ✨✧ Lou Rawls & The Pilgrim TravelerssSoul Stirring Gospel Sounds Of The Pilgrim Travelers ... LP
Capitol, 1962. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful batch of gospel tunes recorded by Lou Rawls with the Pilgrim Travelers – his early group from pre-secular soul days, reunited here for a rare studio session! The album's a great bridge between Lou's two worlds in music – and is recorded with a great 60s soul approach that predates many later efforts to link together gospel and soul. Lou's vocals are in the lead, with great harmony support by the Travelers – and arrangements are by JW Alexander and Rene Hall, in a nicely punctuated 60s Capitol groove. Titles include "Didn't It Rain?", "Walking In The Light Of The Lord", "That's Heaven To Me", "Stand By Me Father", and "If He Holds Your Hand". (Soul, Gospel) LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSoul Gospel ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Another masterpiece from the Soul Jazz collective – a collection of tunes that bridges the secular and spiritual worlds, and brings together a mixture of gospel and soul tracks from the 60s and 70s! It's no secret that soul music has drawn quite a bit of inspiration from gospel (as well as more than its share of stars!) – but rarely has that inspiration been so clearly traced than in this wonderful set! The tunes include gospel numbers that have a classic soul sound, and classic soul tunes that really lean towards the gospel side of the spectrum – and most of the artists on the set are familiar ones, but heard here in a style that links them all nicely together. Titles include "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" by Clarence Smith, "Let's Get Together" by Bobby Bland, "Grandma's Hands" by Marion Gaines Singers, "Every Day Will Be Like A Holiday" by The Sweet Inspirations, "Pastures Of Plenty" by Odetta, "Love Lifted Me" by Jesse Dixon, "I Don't Know Where We're Headed" by Sons Of Truth, "Eleanor Rigby" by Kim Weston, "In Between Tears" by Irma Thomas, "Lort Is It" by Gospel Artistics, "Tripping On Your Love" by Staple Singers, and "Mama" by Esther Marrow. (Funky Compilations, Gospel) CD
