Billy FosterMusic For Jazz Vespers ... CD
Equistar, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99
A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". Rance Allen GroupBest Of The Rance Allen Group ... LP
Stax, Early 70s. Very Good+ ... $8.99
Rance Allen was one of the greatest singers on Stax who never made it during the 70s – probably because he labored in obscurity on Stax's subsidiary Truth label, a gospel imprint where Allen was unjustly stuck because of his roots in the music. Truth is, his work had as much soul as it did gospel – probably even more so as the years wore on and he started to get more secularized. The tracks on this set are as good an introduction to Allen's work as you'll find – and they're filled with great piano work (acoustic and electric), plus loads of tracks sung in Allen's rich soulful style. Titles include "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "There's Gonna Be A Showdown", "Ain't No Need of Crying", "I Belong To You", "Smile", "I Know A Man Who", and "I Got To Be Myself". Pastor TL Barrett & Youth For Christ ChoirDo Not Pass Me By – Vol 2 ... CD
Universal Awareness/Numero, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99
The even more obscure second volume to the great soul/gospel classic Do Not Pass Me By – and like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. Tracks include "I Shall Wear A Crown", "O Sinner", "I Want To Be In Love With You", "Do Not Pass Me By", "O What A Day", "Here I Am", and "There Is Only One". CD
Also available Do Not Pass Me By – Vol 2 ... LP 21.99

Otis ClayWalk A Mile In My Shoes ... CD
Echo, 2007. Used ... $11.99
Otis Clay in a gospel setting – yet still working with all the deep soul we've come to love in his secular work! And in fact, given the style of the album, Otis is more paying tribute to gospel's influence on soul instead of serving up a straight gospel session – really recalling the mix of modes that were strongest in the early days of soul music – captured beautifully here by Clay's southern-styled vocals. Backings are relatively light, and have less of the bluesy tones of some of Otis' other recent recordings – and the set also features guest appearances from Carla Thomas, and Arthur and Leroy Crume. Titles include a great remake of "Walk A Mile In My Shoes" – plus "God Is Standing By", "His Love", "Heaven Is My Home", "Love's In Need Of Love Today", "If I Could Reach Out & Help", and a great "Soul Stirrers Medley". (Soul, Gospel) CD
