Billy FosterMusic For Jazz Vespers ... CD
Equistar, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99
A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". Rance Allen GroupBest Of The Rance Allen Group ... CD
Stax, Early 70s. Used ... $9.99
Rance Allen was one of the greatest singers on Stax who never made it during the 70s – probably because he labored in obscurity on Stax's subsidiary Truth label, a gospel imprint where Allen was unjustly stuck because of his roots in the music. Truth is, his work had as much soul as it did gospel – probably even more so as the years wore on and he started to get more secularized. The tracks on this set are as good an introduction to Allen's work as you'll find – and they're filled with great piano work (acoustic and electric), plus loads of tracks sung in Allen's rich soulful style. Titles include "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "There's Gonna Be A Showdown", "Ain't No Need of Crying", "I Belong To You", "Smile", "I Know A Man Who", and "I Got To Be Myself". (Soul, Gospel) CD

AscendantIlluminate – Blue ... CD
Ascendant, 2012. Used ... $1.99
Spiritual soul from Ascendant – a brilliant little EP that's the greatest thing they've done so far! The sound is sublimely righteous – set to some soaring jazzy backdrops that make the vocals sound really wonderful, and which really help get across the message in the music – a blend that's maybe the best approach to this sort of groove we've heard since vintage work from Fertile Ground! The set's only an EP, but it's got a very powerful feel – put together perfectly, with vocals that are right on the money, especially in the harmony passages – and timeless instrumentation that will have us coming back to this one again and again over the years. Titles include "Darkest Shade Of Blue", "All You Need", "Back Into The World", "Nothing To Prove", and "Gye Nyame". (Neo Soul, Gospel) CD

Pastor TL Barrett & Youth For Christ ChoirDo Not Pass Me By – Vol 2 ... LP
Universal Awareness/Numero, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The even more obscure second volume to the great soul/gospel classic Do Not Pass Me By – and like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. Tracks include "I Shall Wear A Crown", "O Sinner", "I Want To Be In Love With You", "Do Not Pass Me By", "O What A Day", "Here I Am", and "There Is Only One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Clark SistersYou Brought The Sunshine – The Sound Of Gospel Recordings 1976 to 1981 ... CD
Westbound (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A long-overdue look at the amazing Clark Sisters – a fantastic gospel group, and one with a vocal depth that we'd put right up there next to any of our favorite soul acts of the time! The Clarks are maybe best known for their landmark track "You Brought The Sunshine" – a completely righteous blend of gospel, soul, and disco that crossed over very big back in the day – but the group have an endless amount of great music to offer, a great deal of which is brought together in this wonderful set! The sisters always kept a strong ear towards the secular soul styles of their day – but they also always pushed things with the sort of amazing vocal interplay that used to only be the territory of male gospel groups in earlier decades – fantastic harmonies, soaring leads, and really great group formation. And if you're not a completely huge fan of gospel, don't worry – because the message here is often a more general one of positivity, which really lifts up the spirit of the tunes in a universal way. Titles include "You Brought The Sunshine (single edit)", "Everything Is Gonna Be Alright", "He Keeps Me Company", "Patience", "I'm Going To Have Just What I Want", "Power", "Overdose Of The Holy Ghost", "My Mind Is Made Up", "Nothing To Lose All To Gain", "No Other Name", "Keep On Looking Up", and "I Found What I'm Looking For".
