Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (with bonus download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". (Jazz, Gospel) LP, Vinyl record album

Billy FosterMusic For Jazz Vespers ... CD
Equistar, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99
A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". Pastor TL Barrett & Youth For Christ ChoirDo Not Pass Me By – Vol 2 ... LP
Universal Awareness/Numero, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The even more obscure second volume to the great soul/gospel classic Do Not Pass Me By – and like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. Tracks include "I Shall Wear A Crown", "O Sinner", "I Want To Be In Love With You", "Do Not Pass Me By", "O What A Day", "Here I Am", and "There Is Only One". LP, Vinyl record album
