The set definitely lives up to its African Rock promise – as it features lots of sparely percussive tracks that build beautifully – clearly drawing from African inspiration, in the same way that other albums by Akira drew from American funk – then also adding in some cool production and hip effects that help further some of the "rock" side of the agenda! At points, the record almost feels like a solo percussion jam – but at others, the guitars really get heavy, with a jamming intensity that's simply mindblowing. There's lots of psychedelic overtones when the guitars come in – and they make for a wicked contrast with some of the more organic, percussion-oriented moments. The fusion of modes here is wonderful – almost at a level that reminds us of some of the Graeme Revell experiments of the mid 80s, or some of the more organic electronics from Japan – as the whole thing feels a lot more acoustic than electric, with a wonderful blend of woody sounds, percussion, and other great elements. Titles include "In Altepetal Tonal", "I Pan In Xiktli Metztli", "Xochiyaoyoloh", and "Ketzalkoatl Yauh Miktlan". (Latin, Global Grooves) CD

A beautiful album from Idrissa Soumaoro and L'Eclipse – one recorded during a time of great political unrest in Mali, and a set that was never commercially issued – but just originally given away by the Malian Association for the Blind! The album's got all the power of earlier albums from the heyday of 70s Mali music – including Soumaoro's previous group, Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel – many of whom had fled by this point – and Idrissa's snakey guitar lines hold together the larger mix of percussion and vocals from the Eclipse group – which seems to feature some younger singers with a really great range. Overall, the recording style is better than you'd expect for such an under-circulated album – but the sound is still nice and raw, especially on the percussion and vocals. Ebo Taylor at his finest – stepping out here in a wicked set of work from the 70s – filled with upbeat rhythms, sweet instrumental touches, and a heck of a lot of soul! There's a bubbling undercurrent in the rhythms that's almost Caribbean at times, yet the overall groove is a lot sharper too – a warm blend of percussion, guitar, and some mighty sweet keyboards – often peppered with bits of saxophone lines, and topped with lyrics that move nicely along with the groove. Rhythms are mostly in a midtempo mode – a few steps mellower than traditional Afro Funk – which furthers the unique feel of the record, and seems to only deepen Ebo Taylor's soulful intentions! Fantastic sounds from the glory days of the Burkina Faso scene – a time when the country's place at the crossroads of West Africa was helping to create some really amazing music! There's no set style here that defines the groove – as some tracks seem to flow from Nigerian funk, while others have echoes of Mali, and still others might show an influence from the North African changes of the period – but all with an ear towards the kinds of sounds that might burst out from the landlocked nation, and try to catch fire on the wider global market of the time. As you might guess from the Mr Bongo presentation of the music, there's a fair bit of funk in the mix – some heavy basslines or drums on about half of the tunes, mixed with lighter local instrumentation on some of the others – criss-crossing throughout in a really great way! The bass alone is worth the price of admission – as dubby as anything from Kingston, but with a tighter focus – one that drives some sinister lines from the vocals, and which gets strong support from lots of lively conga passages. One of the best new Afro Funk albums we've heard in years – a tremendous effort from percussionist Lekan Babalola, served up with a full bonus disc of remix material! The core grooves here are a fair bit jazzier than most other efforts of this type – still with heavy percussion from Lekan, but also featuring beautiful sax and trumpet lines on most tracks – boldly stating themes, then stretching out in well-spirited solos that break the record past typical rhythmic conventions for this sort of set! There's also some really great electric keyboards on the record too – snaking out in the grooves to give them a nice little 70s touch – and really coming to the forefront on some of the remix work by Phil Asher, Bob Sinclar, IG Culture, and others! Long live disco, but not the sort that was big on the American scene of the 70s – as Tunde Mabadu serves up a nicely lean version of the music here – filled with Nigerian funk elements, and plenty of his own great work on tenor and alto sax! Rare Ghanaian funk from Marijata – a rawer, rootsier take on the mid 70s African funk sound, and really unique vibe overall! Marijata is a core 3-piece featuring drummer Kofi Addison, organist Bob Fischian and guitarist Nat Osmanu of the group Sweet Beans – a set up that provides for a distinctive, loose-limbed feel on the sparest moments – always funky, but without any reliance and bigger, denser orchestrations. Even when augmented by a horn section they've got a great, gritty vibe all their own! This live in the studio set is one of the most hard-sought of the genre, and now that we've heard it, we can see why! Raw, riveting and soulful stuff – a real treasure! A holy grail of 70s African Funk – and not just for the unusual look of the cover! The set's a really unique one – almost rootsier than most of the better-known Ghanian grooves of the time, but funkier too – with a brilliant blend of raw percussion, quirky basslines, and some smoking horn parts that are a lot more American soul and funk than the usual 70s African groove! The funky Rob way is a massive one at that – a new path into Afro Funk modes for the 70s, with a groove that's made this set a collectors classic for decades! The group is tighter than most, yet more skittish too – percussion rattling alongside basslines that have these echoey qualities that go deep and dark, but with more of a soul-based style than some of the psych-influence work from Zimbabwe and other scenes of the time! Spare electronic bits come into play with the keyboards, guitar, drums, and bass – but at a level that's never overdone – just enough to keep things slightly offbeat and unsettling, while Rob himself grooves away in the lead!
