Fast funk and lots of sharp riffs from Okwess
– a group with roots in the Congo, but who've risen to international fame – thanks in part to their updating of older Afro Funk modes, and the strong presence of lead singer Jupinter Bokondji! The group are clearly aware of more contemporary rhythms, but still mostly make their grooves the old school way – with lots of riffing guitar, funky basslines, drums, and percussion – all set to vocal interplay between Jupiter
and the rest of the group! The set features a few guest appearances – including work by Money Mark, Ana Tijoux, and Marcelo D2 – which should give you some idea of how much these guys have their ears open to the rest of the world – and titles include "Telejay", "Meiux Que Ca", "Muba", "Bolingo", "Bakunda Ulu", "Jim Kata", "Na Kozonga", and "You Sold Me A Dream".
