Dele Sosimi & The Estuary 21Confluence ... CD
Wah Wah 45s (UK), 2023. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Dele Sosimi was raised in the shadow of Fela Kuti, literally – as he spent part of his youth in Fela's commune – yet his music is nicely free of some of the overdone Afro Funk modes of the 70s, and instead really finds a fresh way forward with all sorts of wonderful criss-crossings of styles! Sosimi was born in London, and later returned to the city – and the work here really has that special sparkle when the British scene gets things right – bringing together elements of its post-colonial richness, but with a new vision for the future – optimistic and uplifting, but never in a way that makes the music seem too facile or easygoing. One of Dele's key musical partners here is Sam Duckworth, of Get Cape Wear Cape Fly fame – and titles include "Open Up", "Ride Out The Storm", "Ori Mi", "Mo Se Bola Tan", and "E Si Medo". CD

VariousDiscomoda Salsa De Venezuela 1964 to 1977 ... LP
Discomoda/Olindo (UK), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 32.99
A smoking overview of work from the glory days of the Venezuelan scene – that moment when the nation's economy was opening the doors to rich new avenues of expression – including the important Discomoda label, which recorded all the gems on this set! The vibe is great – kind of a sideways take on NYC Latin modes of the years involved, but with some of the rootsier elements you might expect from Colombian work too – all presented with really stark, simple, no-nonsense production that really makes the music burst out loud! The selection of tracks here is great – all killer, no-filler, with a focus on the best Discomoda grooves from this stretch – 21 tracks that include "Mambo Tema" by Genaro Y Sus All Stars, "Disparo Goajira" by Nelson Y Sus Estrellas, "No Salgas De Tu Barrio" by Los Kenya, "Fiesta En Venezuela" by Los Satelites, "Lija" by Rodrigo Mendoza, "Mi Rendencion" by La Renovacion, "Analiza" by Principe Y Su Sexteto, "Juana Guaguanco" by Supercombo Los Tropicales, "Algo Diferente" by Johnny Sedes Y Su Orquesta, "Muneca" by Los Megatones De Lucho, "Pero En Caracas" by Sonora Venezuela, "Maracaibo" by Microbanda Marabina, and "Oye Como Suena"b y Orquesta Sonoramica. ✨✧ NashenasLife Is A Heavy Burden – Ghazals & Poetry From Afghanistan ... LP
Strut (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Hauntingly beautiful work from Nashenas – a singer whose name literally translates as "unknown" – although that may not be the case after this well-done collection gets his music out to the western market! Nashenas was something of a minor star in his own sphere – these tracks were recorded in Afghanistan, but also issued by the Royal label in Iran – and there's a really universal sense of spirit in the music, even if you can't understand the lyrics – as Nashenas sings with a subtle, but powerfully emotive quality over spare backings that include tablas, harmonium, and some other elements you might know from Indian music. The vibe is very much in keeping with the titles of the tunes – and tunes include "O Beloved The Sorrow Of Your Love Destroyed Me", "Flower Had A Thorn", "I Am Happy Alone", "Your Sorrow Is Killing Me", "The Author Of Destiny", and "Life Is A Heavy Burden". ✨✧ Spam AllstarsTrans-Oceanic (with bonus download) ... LP
Peace & Rhythm, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great Miami group, and one who've got a sound that's way deeper than the "spam" in their name – a funky approach that draws equally on Latin roots, 70s funk, and some of the best contemporary inspiration – all of which fuses into a mighty sweet groove! Most of the set is instrumental, and instrumentation is a blend of the expected funky bass and drums, with lots of other percussion, guitar, keyboards, horns, and even some mighty nice violin – which almost gives some of the tracks a funky charanga mode. Some of the elements get nicely complex as the set moves on – and titles include "Ruby Carat", "Satellite", "Around The Track", "Trans-Oceanic", and "La Concha". ✨✧ BuariBuari ... LP
RCA/Be With (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Maybe the best-known international album from Sidiku Buari – an artist who recorded some killer sets in his native Ghana, but who got a rare chance to work here in the US for this album – which features some tight funky elements by Bernard Purdie on drums, Paul Grivvin on keyboards, and Lou Hemsey on guitar! Hemsey arranged, and there's a gritty vibe to the record that's like some of the best RCA label funk of the time – such as work by the Nite Liters – mixed with some other touches that show Buari's roots on the West African scene – served up in a hybrid that's arguably more successful here than most overseas projects of this nature! Titles include "Ku Ku Maria", "Advice From Father", "Iro Le Pa", "Oh Africa", "Peace", "Then Yebtheyet", and "Karam Bani". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousLondon Is The Place For Me Vol 7 – Calypso, Palm Wine, Mento, Joropo, Steel, & Stringband ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 1950s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fascinating look at musical modes in London during the big years of postwar immigration – a time when former residents of the crumbling British Empire were flooding to London for jobs and a better way of life – often bringing along a huge amount of cultural experience in the process! This set follows wonderfully in the spirit of previous volumes of the series – bringing together a range of different sonic styles that were originally recorded in London as 78rpm singles – where a new wave of Caribbean and West African immigrants were fusing older styles with a newly modern sensibility, and often a fair bit of jazz as well! The set list is wonderful – a great array of well-chosen material – and titles include "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "The Emperor Of Africa" by The Mighty Terror, "Royal Wedding" by The Lion, "Modern Telephone" by Dai Dai Simba, "Sons & Daughters Of Africa" by Lord Beginner, "Caroline" by Trinidad Steel Band, "Ema Foju Ana Woku" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Kana Kana" by Billy Sholanke, "Boul Ve Se" by Calypso Rhythm Kings, and "My Handy Man" by Marie Bryant. Nyofu TysonTurkish Delite Turk Lokumu ... LP
Seismographic (Germany), 1980s. New Copy ... $36.99 39.99
Sweet 80s grooves from the Turkish scene – served up in a mode that mixes earlier styles with instrumentation that's a bit more fitting for the decade – drum machine rhythms and keyboard lines coming into play with more exotic melodies, and vocals served up in a variety of styles! Some of the tunes here are tagged as "disco", but in a way that's really refracted through the span of space and time that led to these recordings – hardly familiar club modes, but still plenty darn groovy – and a nice take on Andaolu modes from a few years before! Titles include "Fiance", "Fidayda", "Emmoglu", "If You Want My Love", "Sunglasses Belly Dance", "Tabancamin Sapini", "Misty Mountain Melodies", and "Eminem". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dytomite Starlite BandDytomite Starlite Band of Ghana ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's "Dytomite", not "dynamite" – and don't ask us what it means, either! But we can tell you that the set's a great bit of highlife, recorded with a lean, breezy feel – a bit more heft than just the duo pictured on the cover – with criss-crossing guitars, really wonderful rhythms, and dipping basslines that provide this bubbling sense of energy that really sends home the groove! One track has this cool moogy sound that's very unique, and the rest sparkle with a great sense of warmth that's only expanded with the vocal interplay in the lead. Titles include "Amanfoo", "Nya Asem Hwe", "Anomakoro", "Obaa Mansa", and "Meye Meho Ayie". LP, Vinyl record album

Fela & Africa 70Ikoyi Blindness (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
African Music International/Knitting Factory, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 25.99
A mid-70s message from the legendary Fela Kuti – a record whose title and cover image are a commentary on the wrong directions the Nigerian elite were heading in at the time – served up here with all the fantastic frenzied grooves that Afrika 70 can deliver! "Ikoyi Blindness" begins with quick-stepping percussion and riffing guitar, then soon opens to a great keyboard part as the horns come in, and the whole thing flowers beautifully in both an instrumental and vocal level! The flipside also features the equally-great "Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolow" – translated as "Slap Me Make I Get Money", an attack on the way that the rich bend the system of justice to their own needs – and really set fire by Fela and the group. LP, Vinyl record album
