✨✧ Aksak MaboulUne Aventure De VV – Made To Measure 48 ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 2023. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A really cool project from this always-unique group – a set that follows in their pan-global legacy of sounds, but which also adapts them to more of a soundtrack sort of setting – as you might guess from the album's appearance in the Made To Measure series! The music is strong throughout, but also works to engage a series of sung and spoken text passages – all words penned by Veronique Vincent (hence the title) – and performed by Blaine L Reininger, Laetitia Sader, Alig Fodder, and others. The project is inspired by sonic projects on European radio from years back – but it's also got a sound that's very much in the spirit of the Crammed label at its height – and maybe a bit like that of the contemporary imprint Les Disques Du Crepuscle too. Titles include "Veille Au Reve", "Miracle Au Jardin, "L'Ombre Double", "Talking With The Birds", "The Eraser", "Zone Blanche", "Brown Dwarves", and "I Walk & I Walk". ✨✧ Zazou BikayeMr Manager ... LP
Crammed (Belgium), 1985. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
80s Afro grooves, recorded in Belgium – given a nice twist by the Crammed Discs label, which was one of the first to really open up African styles with more European elements! Bony Bikaye handles vocals, and Hector Zazou plays plenty of keyboards and adds in beat – so there's an electro-styled groove to most cuts, in a mode that's similar to some of the New Africa material on Celluloid Records from the same time! The remaining member of the group handles lots of saxophone solos – but the trio also get some studio help that includes more saxophone from Marc Hollander. Titles include "Angel", "Mr Manager", "Nostalgie", and "Soki Akei". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Kasai All StarsIn The 7th Moon – Congotronics 3 ... CD
Crammed (Belgium), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the most compelling entries so far in the all-great Congotronics series – a set of highly percussive work from this unique ensemble! The Kasai All Stars is a collective of members from six other groups – all working here in Konono-like territory that's heavy on distorted rhythms from electrified thumb piano and xylophones, then topped with some great guitar lines that link the music to older African traditions – all with a sound that's completely hypnotic and downright other-worldly! There's vocals on most of the tracks, but the real appeal of the record is the instrumentation, which is totally great – a mindblowing blend of sounds that shows that there's still plenty of key musical changes taking place in the African scene. Titles include "Quick As White", "Mukuba", "Beyond The 7th Moon", "Analengo", "Mpombo Yetu", "Mbu A Matumba", and "Drowning Goat". CD
(Back cover has a light impression.)

✨✧ Konono No 1Assume Crash Position ... CD
Crammed (Belgium), 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
Masterful Congolese dance music from Konono No 1 – just as exciting and rhythmically amazing as their benchmark Congotronics album for Crammed of a few years earlier– with a somewhat bigger and more melodic sound this time out that doesn't sacrifice the street sound immediacy one bit! There was more of a clattering, gritty and distorted element to the production of their international breakthrough Congotronics set – and if the sound is a little cleaner this time out, it just makes the feverish energy all the more inviting! The likembe and always incredible drums and percussion are at the forefront – no fewer than five players are credited on the likembe thumb piano that's so central to the group's sound – with Mingiedi Mawangu, Augustin Makuntima Mawangu and Pauline Mbuka Nsiala contributing vocals (which are really beautiful on this album) with Makonda Mbuta on likembe, Antoine Ndombele on bass likembe, Vincent Visi on drums, Ndofusu Mbiyavanga on percussion & tam tam and Duki Makumbu on bass guitar – with guitar on a few tracks by Nzila Mabasukisa, guest vocals by Ewing Sima and addition likembe by members of the Kasai Allstars. Titles include "Wumbanzanga", "Thin Legs", "Mama Na Bana", "Makembe", "Fula Fula", "Guiyome", "Konono Wa Wa Wa" and "Nakobala Lisusu Te". CD

✨✧ Konono No 1Congotronics ... CD
Crammed (Belgium), 2004. Used ... Out Of Stock
A group with a sound like no other – one that features home-made electronics and amplification, and an array of highly-percussive instrumentation that includes thumb pianos, megaphones, microphones, and old car parts! Konono's been making this music for the past 25 years – working in the suburbs of Kinshasa as a collective of musicians experimenting with the relation of sound and rhythm – using a fair bit of distortion to push the boundaries of their style. There's a unique relationship here between traditional African rhythms and newer electronic music – almost a primitive electronica, if you will – but with a style that goes way beyond such a facile tag. Titles include "Paradiso", "Mama Liza", "Kule Kule", "Lufuala Ndonga", and "Masikulu". CD

✨✧ Steve ShehanArrows – Made To Measure Vol 26 ... LP
Crammed/First On Vinyl (Japan), 1990. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most unusual albums in this legendary series – a solo set by Steve Shehan, but one that has him playing dozens of different instruments, in a way that brings a whole globe's worth of music into play at once! Shehan had played on countless records for others in the years before this set – including percussion contributions for big major label artists – but there's a very personal, almost poetic approach to the work here – as Steve handles sounds from afuche, cymbals, glasses, ikembe, sanza, Malaysian gongs, djembe, angklung, balafon, koto, gender, kendang, terompong, bells, Armenian tar, surdo, keyboards, congas, steel drums, vibes, sticks, cuica, sitar, kodo, and many other instruments! Titles include "Sticks & Spaces", "Rainy Forest", "Shogun", "Istanblue", "Unknown Lights", and "Afrocubana". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousCongotronics 2 – Buzz N Rumble From The Urb'n Jungle (CD & DVD) ... CD
Crammed/Ziriguiboom, 2006. Used CD & DVD ... $4.99
The brilliant follow up to the first Congotronics album – and a set that goes even deeper than the initial groundbreaking work by Konono! This album follows in a very similar spirit to Konono's Congotronics set – and like that one, focuses on musicians with a unique electro/acoustic approach to African rhythms! Groups on the set all hail from the Kinshasa scene, like Konono, they retro-fit older styles with homemade amplification – in a way that electrifies the grooves, but often with a sound that's highly distorted – creating great fuzzy tones and noises alongside the rhythms! Konono appear on one track in the set, but the real strength comes from these other groups working in a similar mode – as they bring new instruments, sounds, and modes of expression to the format – showing that the style is not just a happy accident, but a powerful new wave of music from the urban African scene! Titles include "Mulume" by Basokin, "Bosamba Ndeke" by Bolia We Ndenge, "Kiwembo" by Sobanza Mimanisa, "Wa Muluendu" by Masanka Sakayia & Kasai Allstars, "Soif Conjugale" by Kisanzi Congo, "La Laboureur" by Masanka Sakai, "Koyile/Nyeka Nyeka" by Kasai Allstars, and "TP Coleur Cafe" by Konono No 1. CD
(Comes with a DVD featuring footage of 6 of the groups on the set!)

Black MangoQuicksand ... CD
Gusstaff (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
A really unique project from Philippe Samiguel – recorded in Bamako, where Samiguel has worked as a producer for many years – during which time he's pulled together ideas from all sorts of different projects, and forged them into a new groove of his own! Samiguel's worked most famously with Samba Toure – who's here on the record alongside other artists who include Hugo Race, Mariam Kone, Mamadou Sidibe, and others – working on music that has roots in Malian blues, Tuareg guitar, and other west African modes – but which has a quality that's also very much all its own. There's an experimental nature to the project that takes us back to some of the best global experiments from the early days of the Crammed label – and titles include "Are U Satisfied", "The First Tone", "Minamba", "Heaven Sands", "Mad Girl Lament", "Quicksand Blues", and "Golden Cage". ✨✧ Guy CuevasTotal Cuevas ... CD
Libreville (France), Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Funky French club tracks from the start of the 80s – all the brainchild of DJ Guy Cuevas, who has a perfect ear for mixing together dancefloor styles and a nice range of global elements! And sure, lots of folks worked in that territory during the 80s world music boom – but Cuevas was one of the first, and has a style that's a lot more like some of the best early Celluloid/Crammed material – with a vibe that stretches nicely from the clubs of Paris to some of the best cross-cultural experiments of the downtown scene in New York! The well-done set brings together tracks from a few different albums and 12" singles – and titles include "Everywhere Is My Home", "Gallo Negro (Ronan mix)", "Qiereme Un Poco (inst mix)", "Ebony Game", "Island In My Mind (edit)", and three different mixes of the great cut "Obsession" – Paris, London, and Nassau mixes! Mario Rua SilvaStories From Another Time 1982 to 1988 ... LP
Time Capsule (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $33.99 36.99
Stories from another time and place – and music that's almost without comparison, either – as the set brings together material recorded by Angolan guitarist Mario Rui Silva, a musician whose range of expression stretches far past his West African roots! There's a heck of a lot going on here – definitely plenty of the acoustic guitar pictured on the cover, but often used with sensitivity that's more Brazilian than you'd expect – and interspersed with tracks that have other instrumentation in the lead, including balafon – sometimes spare instrumentals, sometimes vocal numbers – mostly acoustic, but with a few electric elements from time to time. The music has both a complexity and really organic mixing of modes – maybe a bit like some of the global experiments that you might have found on the Crammed label at the time, but also very unique to Mario himself too. Titles include "Ngisumba", "Mgeni", "Kazum Zum Zum", "Maniku", "Lembranca De Um Veho", "Depois De Uma Conversa", "Kabanza K'Etu", and "Dembita". LP, Vinyl record album
