Bro DavidModern Music From Belize ... LP
Cultures Of Soul, Late 80s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 22.98
Modern music from Belize, circa 1988 – as the set brings together a host of homegrown recordings from Bro David – done in a style he refers to as cungo music! There's definitely some Caribbean touches in the grooves, but the music is also heavy on instrumentation and production modes from mainstream soul of the period – a nice criss-crossing that reminds us of some of the Caribe-influenced tracks that were getting play on the New York underground of the period, although maybe with a vibe that's a bit leaner and more personal overall. Many tracks have drum machine rhythms, but augmented with lots of other instrumentation to warm things up – and titles include "Dangriga", "Feel Free", "Cungo", "Sunshine", "Dancin", Experience", and "Belize". Dariush Dolat-ShahiElectronic Music, Tar, & Sehtar ... CD
Folkways, 1985. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Mindblowing sounds at a level we've never heard before – a really unique combination of electronics and Persian music, done in a way that's quite different from any other recording of its nature! The electronics are used in a way that's relatively spare, but which definitely sets a sonic texture next to the acoustic sounds from sehtar and tar – not this moogy way of interfering with them, but more in terms of waves of sound that augment their qualities and deepen the overall feel of the music in really special ways. This is hardly any sort of gimmicky "world meets moog" record – and instead has an ethereal feel that's all its own – and this pulse that comes from the really modal use of all elements! Titles include "Zahab", "Razm", "Shabistan", and "Sama". (Out Sound, Global Grooves) CD

EdiigwuMusic Of The Idoma Of Nigeria – Ediigwu Sings The Ancient Songs Of Oturkpo, Nigeria ... CD
Asch/Folkways, 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
One of the darkest field recordings on the Folkways label – a set of Ichicha musicmusic traditionally performed during the wake of a funeral – actually recorded during a funeral! Some of the songs are just Ediigwu, but the others are call and response with a full chorus and the ajigo, or kettle drum and the okanga, a two membrane drum, carried slung over a shoulder – and given the setting of the record, there's a very strong undercurrent of sadness in most of the music – not faked or forced in the studio, but genuinely felt emotion at the event. Tracks include "Alekwu Chants", "Onugbu & Oko", "Journey To Igbira", and more. CD

Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

Los CamaroesLos Camaroes – A Journey Into Cameroonian Music (with bonus download) ... LP
Sonafric/Nubiphone (France), Early 70s. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the funkiest groups we've ever heard from the Cameroon scene – a combo who play with a super-tight sound that often has as much interplay between the vocals as the instruments at the core! As you'd guess from the three guitarists on top of the van in the cover, the group's sound is heavy on guitars – often riffing in these funky ways as the players seem to challenge each other, and create this great flow that moves between American funk and more homegrown styles. Vocals come fast and furious, and often shift between group members – really keeping pace with the energy of all the other instruments too. Titles include "Boo A Nun Muna", "Special Nkumu Asenge", "Kodi", "Pitie", "Kundug Bidza Bidza", "Annie", "Bia Tak Ayi Los", and "Esele Mulema Moam". LP, Vinyl record album

Bala Miller & The Great Music Pirameeds Of AfricaPyramids ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 16.99
Bala Miller's got a great pan-African group here – one that's more from the western side of the scene, despite the pyramids mentioned in their name – with players hailing from Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon – all coming together in a mighty righteous style! The music is fairly cerebral – thoughtful tunes that have a layered blend of horns, guitar, keyboards, and sweetly-stepping rhythms – plus occasional organ, kora, goga, and kwarya – all given a stronger focus from the vocals in the lead, which shift between male and female singers, and some backup as well. Titles include "Ikon Allah", "Yo Gboko", "Opportunity Knocks", "Stretch Your Nose", and "All Work No Play". CD

Numero, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
The sound of Tehran right before the Ayatollah took over – and a great reminder of how westernized the Iranian scene was back in the 70s! The record is pure disco all the way through – much groovier than the "pop music" title, and instead awash in quick rhythms and sweet disco touches – including some mighty nice keyboards! The vibe is certainly different than American disco – more like some of the European disco hybrids of the time – but the results are pretty darn groovy, and there's some really nice percussion at the core of most tunes. Titles include "Al Elenim", "Alas Alas", "My Heart", "On The Days", and "Ai Ai Heyveh Heyveh". LP, Vinyl record album

Jonathan Scales FourchestraMindstate Music ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
One of the most compelling mixes of steel pans and jazz we've ever heard – played by a group led by percussionist Jonathan Scales, and featuring a number of other differently-tuned steel drums in the mix! The instrumentation just features bass and drums alongside all the pans – which leaves the sound to come almost exclusively from the combined colors and tones of the mighty steel lineup – all used in a way that's much more complex and fluid than some of the simpler projects of this nature, which usually just try to add a bit of swing to a core Caribbean approach. The album is billed as a "concerto" – and titles include "The Man", "The Mouse", "The Mud", "The Mean", "The Maze", and "The Mad". (Jazz, Global Grooves) CD

Art Metropole, Mid 80s/1987. Used ... $24.99
A very unique project from musician/filmmaker/theorist Michael Snow – not sounds of his own creation, but more of a collage of unusual music from around the globe – presented in a spirit that definitely fits the title! Oddly, when the record was created in the 80s, it was also seen as a swan song to the vinyl LP too – something that never came to pass – and, as well, efforts like this have only continued more strongly in recent years – maybe making Snow's efforts here more of a "beginning", than any sort of document of the end! Still, the whole thing's a fascinating audio document – of the sort that's very different than familiar ethnographic or world music albums – with an array of sounds from Brazil, South Korea, India, Angola, Siberia, Bhutan, and other points global. 40s field recordings in pre-Castro Cuba – a series of tracks recorded in Havana and more rural locations, all of which document the surviving African traditions in Cuban music! Much of the work here is relatively spare and percussive – done with instrumentation that includes gourd scrapers, calabash rattles, friction drums, and bells – topped by vocals that often have a rhythmically chanting feel. Styles document the Lucumi, Arara, Abakwa, and Kimbisa cultures – and titles include "Lucumi Song", "Song To Orisha Oko", "Djuka Drums", "Song To Chongo", and "Song To Obatala". CD

VariousDuomo Sounds Ltd – Nigerian 80s Disco Music To Move Your Soul ... LP
Odion Livingstone (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
Sweet grooves from the Duomo Sounds label – a short-lived Nigerian imprint who cut some mighty funky sounds at the start of the 80s! The title here uses the word "disco", but these cuts have none of the strings and polish of the sounds you'd hear at Studio 54 – as most numbers here are stripped-down and raw, really more in a clubbier take on the more famous Nigerian funk of a few years before! However, there's also a quality here that could easily cross over to the hipper clubs on the New York underground – as most of these guys are also using the same sort of small combo funk instrumentation of the best of the indie post-disco scene – which means that some tracks resonate with the work of labels like P&P, and others echo some of the more global currents that were showing up in New York funk during the period! Most lyrics are in English, which further gives these tracks a universal appeal – and titles include "Perfect Disco Machine" and "Disco Connection" by Bindinga, "Aimiuugwia" and "Advice" by Christy Ogbah, "Bazz Xmas Eve" by Johnny O, "Look At Me" and "Shake You Body" by Mike Umoh, "You Do Good You Do For Yourself" by Godfrey Odili, "On My Mind" by Bassey Black & The Natty Messiah, and "Ariro" by Eunice Mokus Arimoku. Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. New Copy 2CD ... $11.99
A beautiful celebration of the first ten years of Heavenly Sweetness – a fantastic French record label that's not only given us spiritual jazz from giants of the 70s, but also opened our ears to both new sounds from contemporary artists, and a wide array of rhythms from around the globe! All those elements are perfectly balanced here – showing Heavenly Sweetness as an imprint that can live up to the legacy of earlier European giants – with a similar culture-crossing vibe as MPS or Saravah, but a much more contemporary approach too! Titles include "We People" by Doug Hammond, "Blue Train" by Byard Lancaster, "Mother Of The Future" by Anne Wirz, "Don't Stress Me Out" by Monette Sudler, "Valse Pour Helene" by Florian Pellissier Quintet, "Flow Like A River" by Robert Aaron, "Rip With John Coltrane" by Patchworks, "Journey To The Shore" by Dopegems, "September Sun" by Jacaranda Muse, "Sam's Intro" by Rongetz Foundation, "Where's My Soul" by Baron Retif & Conception Perez, "Our History" by Anthony Joseph, "Voices" by Blundetto, "Don't You Know" by Leron Thomas, "Want It Back" by Guts, "Womanarium" by Sly Johnson, "Untitled/Inspiration From Home" by Don Cherry, "Dead Sea Scrolls" by Raphael, "Ode To Ethiopia" by John Betsch Society, and "NT" by Tagi with Georgia Anne Muldrow. 40 tracks in all! Moody, kind of sultry and pulpy Cambodian rock, LA style – perhaps the best record yet from Dengue Fever! Ananda ShankarAnanda Shankar (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 27.98
Insanely fantastic! Ananda Shankar was one of the hippest sitar players of the 60s – an artist who was not only steeped in the strongest traditions of Indian music heard in other more mainstream players, but one who also had a keen ear for modder and funkier grooves of the time! This rare American set by Ananda is one of his greatest ever – a brilliant mix of funky backings and tripped out sitar work – done in a way that blends together soul, funk, and rock – all given a particularly cool Indian twist. The vibe is very much in the best funky Bollywood style – but was actually done years before most Bollywood funk – and the set includes great covers of "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire", plus great original tracks like "Sagar (The Ocean)", "Snow Flower", "Dance Indra", and "Metamorphosis". Sarolta ZalatnaySarolta Zalatnay ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1970s. Used ... $11.99
Fuzzy, funky, and freaky – some really incredible work from Hungarian rocker Sarolta Zalatnay – an artist with a groove that's a lot easier to get than her name! The work here was recorded in collaboration with 70s groups Locomitiv GT, Metro, Omega, and Skorpio – all of whom are pretty darn funky at times – with an approach that mixes heavy drums, rumbling bass, and lots of fuzzy guitars – making for a fair bit of break-heavy tracks on the set. Topped with Sarolta's vocals, the sound is somewhere between Betty Davis on her classic Just Sunshine albums and Gal Costa at the end of the 60s – but also a fair bit more exotic too, given the Hungarian language, and the use of Eastern phrasing on some of the tunes. And if you're scratching your head because you've never heard of Zalatnay before, don't worry – because the package features some great notes on her sordid career from the 70s onward – even though the music alone here should be more than enough to win you over! Titles include "Ne Hidd El", "Itt A Nyar", "Egyser", "Rogos Uton", "Zold Borostyan", "Munanyag Almok", "The Freak", "Move Over", "Oh Ha Milliomos Lennek", and "Fekete Beat". (Rock, Global Grooves) CD

Original Music/Take It Acid Is, 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 23.98
A set of recordings made in the Somali city of Baraawe, which is a bit south of Mogadishu – all done in the late 80s, but with a quality that sounds far more timeless and ancient! The instrumentation is all acoustic – mostly vocals and a single stringed instrument – used in ways that reflect the Somali crossroads of Islamic styles and some other North African modes, but with an other-worldly vibe that's all its own! Imagine some of the more familiar Ethiopian styles of the time, but stripped-down to their core, and recorded in a much rootsier style – and you'll get part of the idea of this set. A few tunes use organ, but in this thin, almost reed-like way – and titles include "Muumina", "Ma Korto", "Laac", "Dakhtar", "Jamiila", and "Siina Miiri". LP, Vinyl record album

Folkways, 1954. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A drum-heavy spectacular – recorded with a really rootsy feel! The first half of the material was recorded in Africa – not credited especially well, but done with a stripped-down sound that's very heavy on drums and other odd percussion instruments – recorded in that rough, loud Folkways style that really makes the music sound nicely bombastic. The remaining tracks on the set are from a variety of North and South American locales – Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Jamaica, and even the US – as Baby Dodds turns in a solo on the final track! Titles include "Ceremonial Drums", "Dance Drums", "Stamping Tubes", "Salute To A Chief", "Sit Log Talking Drum", "Djuka Dance Drums", "Lucumi", "Jumping Dance Drums", "Cuminia Drums", "Rhythms For The Deity Ogoun", and "Jazz Drumming". Folkways, 1956. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
Not the usual sorts of Brazilian songs that you might expect – no tight samba or bossa, but instead a batch of rootsy music from Bahia – all with rhythmic qualities that strongly inspired both later genres! Percussion is the strongest element on most of these tunes, but there's also some sharp stringed instrumental lines too – similar to cavaquinho in samba, or guitar in bossa – all topped with vocals from Oneyda Alvarenga – who almost seems to blow the microphone into the red with the intensity she brings to some of the performances. The whole set was recorded in Mar Grande, Itaparica – and titles include "O Embole Embole", "Samba Urbano", "Marcha Larga", "E Foi A Vaca", "Pena Verde", "Embolada", "A Tempo De Samba", and "Movemento De Marcha". ✨✧ AmabanoAmsterdam Ticket (with bonus download) ... LP
Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". AntibalasAntibalas (with download) ... LP
Daptone, 2012. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Amazing sounds from one of the best funky combos anywhere – ever! Antibalas have certainly risen to fame in the years since we first heard their Afro-styled grooves – working famously in the Fela musical, and reaching generations of ears with their own brilliant records. Yet throughout it all, they've always stayed true to their sound – and, if anything, are even sharper, tighter, and funkier than before – all extremely adept not only at playing their instruments, but at hitting the right sort of sound to cut through all the BS that was holding back funky Afro grooves for years! Part of that sound comes from superb Daptone production by Gabriel Roth – who really knows how to keep things lean and mean and full of energy. But the core credit really goes to the group – who never cease to amaze us here – and continually come up with fresh sounds on their keyboards and horns – and inventive rhythms to match! Titles include "Dirty Money", "The Rat Catcher", "Ari Degbe", "Ibeji", "Sare Kon Kon", and "Him Belly No Go Sweet". LP, Vinyl record album

Titles include "Lai Lai", "Fight Am Finish", "Koto", "Amenawon", and "Mttt (parts 1 & 2)". LP, Vinyl record album

AntibalasWhere The Gods Are At Peace ... LP
Daptone, 2017. New Copy ... $14.99 17.98
Maybe the most searing album we've ever heard from Antibalas – a set that's completely on fire from the very first note, both musically and politically – and which burns with an intensity that seems to blow away all their previous music! Make no mistake, we've always loved these guys – but this time around, there's an urgency that really grabs us – maybe because of the political climate in which the set was recorded, or maybe just because these guys always keep growing and maturing, where so many other similar combos are just content to stick in the same territory. The lead vocals by Duke Amayo are incredible – with a righteous power that demands to be heard – and the horns are more creative and colorful than ever, with some fantastic solos on the album's very long tracks. And of course, the grooves are great – that blend of riffing guitars and percussion that Antibalas have updated from 70s Afro Funk – on titles that include the three-part "Tombstown" suite, plus "Hook & Crook" and "Gold Rush". Pascal AtanganaYe Mot Ai Kare Mot – Cameroun Partout Vol 10 (with bonus download) ... LP
Nanga Boko (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Pascal Atangana is a hell of a singer – one who can move quickly, but with lots of deft changes – over the very dynamic rhythms provided by his excellent backing group! The set was originally issued as a part of a series to showcase the music of Cameroon in the 70s – but it's got a unique quality that's very much its own – often delivered with a very propulsive blend of percussion and fast-moving guitars – rhythms that cascade forward without ever missing a beat, while Pascal does an amazing job of keeping up the pace, and bringing lots of personal inflections to the sound as well. Titles include "Ye Mot Ai Kare Mot", "Amayang Wom", "Aluk Adang Ayia", "Za Ayana Ma", "Oyene Nyolo Ane Nyobok", and "Komedeng". LP, Vinyl record album

Ojo BalingoAfrotunes – Best of Juju Vol 2 – Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo ... CD
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 18.99
Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. New Copy ... $9.99
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". CD

BelenouEmosyon Tambou-a ... LP
Beau Monde (France), 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A record from the start of the 90s, but one with a spirit that's much more like some of the best 70s hybrids of jazz and global rhythms – served up here by a group that features plenty of the three musical elements pictured on the cover, plus some vocals from the ensemble as well! Electric bass and guitar are the two non-acoustic instruments in the mix – and there's plenty of rootsy percussion that really moves quickly with the grooves, as the bass often inflects along with the energy of the rhythms – laying out a tuneful path that's then followed by the vocals! And there's more guitar solos than tenor moments, but they definitely get the right sort of space to stretch out – on titles that include "Danse Ting Bang", "Wi Nou Ke Rive", "Demokrasi", "Emosyon Tanbou-A", "Sove Te A", and "Tout Pep La Sanble". Rupa BiswasDisco Jazz ... LP
Numero, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A record that's got to be one of the coolest recorded in Calgary during the early 80s – as it offers up a really unusual blend of modes that definitely lives up to its title, and which also borrows a bit from Indian music as well! Singer Rupa Biswas fronts a group that's equally strong on the instrumental tip, and which allow for plenty of room in the tracks to let the players stretch out and solo – in a blend of keyboards and guitar with more traditional sarod and tablas! Rhythms are mostly upbeat, but in ways that are more interesting than the "disco" title implies – especially in 1982 – and the whole thing's maybe first a funky fusion record, which then borrows a bit from Indian percussion, then adds in Rupa's vocals in the lead. Titles include "Aaj Shanibar", "Moja Bhari Moja", "East West Shuffle", and the side-long jam "Ayee Morshume/Be Reham Duniya". LP, Vinyl record album

Franck Biyong with Cristina ViolleTrouble – Anywhere Trouble (club mix, radio edit, inst)/Trouble (beats) ... 12-inch
Hot Casa (France), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $24.99
A great little funky single from Franck Biyong – part of his continuing evolution and growth as one of the leading lights in the contemporary Afro Funk underground – an artist who's really moved past some of the slavish styles of years behind! Franck adds in both live drums and rhythm programs here – chanting out the vocals with Cristina Violle alongside him in the lead – while keyboardist Florian Pellissier and a jazzy combo keep things moving in the back! All three vocal mixes of the tune are great, but the club mix may well be the best – although the whole four track single works together almost as a mini suite based on the music! ✨✧ Black SavageBlack Savage (with bonus CD & download) ... LP
Afro 7 (Estonia), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A Kenyan funk combo from the 70s – and one who've got a groove that definitely lives up to the striking image on the cover! The set brings together obscure singles and album tracks from Black Savage – a group who sing in English throughout, and also draw plenty of influence from American soul acts as well – but always with a vibe that filters the music through a slightly fuzzy sort of veil – creating lots of weird, wild elements on the guitars as well as the vocals – both of which seem to be pretty processed in the production! There's almost a Westbound Records sort of spirit to the record at times – that trippy blend of funk and psych that was a Detroit hallmark at the start of the 70s – although a few other tunes have a more sing/song, catchy sort of approach. Titles include "Do You Really Care", "Sharpeville", "Savaged", "I Don't Know What To Do", "Exotica", "Save The Savage", and "Grassland". LP, Vinyl record album

Odd Funk (Netherlands), 2019. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
A funky combo who draw heavily on elements from Ethiopian music – so much so that most of the album's titles are also written in Ethiopian script! The core instrumentalists are Finnish, and work together in a great blend of older Ethio roots and leaner contemporary funk – mixing heavy percussion with horns, bass, and lots of riffing guitar – all accompanied by vocals from singer Mikiyas Getachew, aka MikiMac – whose presence really helps give the songs a focus! The core founders of the group are guitarist Juha Sarkkola and trumpeter Turre Tammi – but the whole thing is definitely a strong ensemble affair – on titles that include "Yeselalewa", "Hagerun Geleba", "In A Sincere Way", "Nurona Bilhatu", "Why Is The Chicken Running", and "Block Hipat". Harry Bloom/Todd Matshikiza/Pat WilliamsKing Kong – All African Jazz Opera ... LP
Gallo (South Africa), Mid 50s. Very Good+ ... $29.99
Despite the colonialist overtones of the project – sort of the African equivalent to Porgy & Bess, at least in terms of authenticity – this groundbreaking musical was actually a crucial moment in the development of South African jazz. It's unfortunate that the package doesn't list the players in the ensemble – but we're certain that we hear Kippie Moketsi on sax, and most of the musical backings have a feel that reminds us a lot of early work by The Blue Notes, or Hugh Masekela. Features the instrumental groover "Kwela Kong", plus "In The Queue", "Death Song", "Damn Him", "Sad Times, Bad Times", and "The Earth Turns Over". (Soundtracks, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

BuariDisco Soccer ... CD
Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". Sidiku BuariFeelings In Africa/Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters ... CD
Precious/BBE (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99 16.99
A pair of rare records by Sidiku Buari – issued back to back on a single CD! Feelings is a record that was issued on the tiny Precious label – home to only two Buari albums in its tiny catalog – and the set follows strongly on the work that Sidiku recorded in New York during the 70s, records that were initially issued just under his last name! The groove on some tracks is full of early 80s NYC touches – sweet electro keyboards that provide some great middle-ground shocks to the tunes – while beats crackle crispy at the bottom, and Buari sings these slinky soul vocals that are a lot more American than you'd guess from the Ghanaian recording of the album. But other numbers have more of a West Africa vibe – that updating of older modes that was taking place in Nigeria too. Titles include "Music", "Feelings", "Anowar", and "Yayo Papa". Sidiku Buari & His Jam Busters has a groove that definitely lives up to its name – a sweet 80s crackle with lots of tunes that jam in an old school funk style – keyboards, basslines, and rhythms right on the money – in a great Transatlantic bridge between Ghana and New York City! The set begins with the super-funky "Let's Go To Funky Town" – a tune with a break on the intro to rival some of the best funky club work of the time – and the vibe continues strongly through the rest of the set, on titles that include "Sophisticated Jammer", "Power To My People", "Rhythm Of Africa", "Minsumobo", and "Karambani". BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
One of the coolest records ever issued by Sidiku Buari – the Ghanian musician who also recorded just as Buari – stepping out here in a very unusual performance recorded live at a club in New York at the end of the 70s! Side one begins with this great crowd frenzy and very cool energy as Buari's group take off running – mixing West African modes with more American boogie and funk elements – in a blend that has lots of riffing guitar and some especially groovy keyboard parts! Side two features studio material, but still pretty darn great – and maybe touched with a slight inspiration from Jamaica in some of the dubbier rhythms. There's some nicely weird sounds that are a bit hard to identify, and which cut against some of the sweeter vocal moments – on titles that include "Together We Can Rebuild It", "Revolution", "Keep The Rhythm Going", "Ofey Karambani", "This Is Music", and "Disco Soccer". Rupert Clemendore/John Buddy WilliamsLe Jazz Primitif From Trinidad ... CD
Cook, 1961. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Nothing primitif about this jazz, because the music has a really haunting feel – one that's filled with sophisticated changes and compelling instrumentation – served up in ways that are unlike anything else we can think of! Side one of the record features the combo of percussionist Rupert Clemendore, who also plays vibes on the record – with Bert Innis on piano, Frankie Francis on sax, and Les Sargeant on guitar – all in a set of tunes that skittishly groove on angular rhythms, yet also have a sense of warmth as well. Titles include "Bongo Mood", "We Mambo", "Princess Charming", and "The Fly". Side two features equally amazing music from the group of bassist John Buddy Williams – a combo with lots of heavy percussion and a definite Latin bent in the rhythms, plus "doublers" who play either sax or clarinet at the same time – making for a really wide, spread-apart sound as they snake through the melodies! These tracks were all recorded live, with a really festive feel – and titles include "Alma Llanera", "She Pon Top", "Shoemaker Shop", "Man In Dey", and "Last Night The Landlord Nearly Killed Me". Julie CokerLife In The Limelight – Lagos Disco & Itsekiri Highlife 1976 to 1981 ... LP
Kalita, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy Gatefold ... $25.99
Classic tracks from the short-but-strong music career of Julie Coker – a huge figure in Nigerian culture, both for her work onscreen and off! Coker recorded a handful of records at the end of the 70s – right at the height of her career – and the tracks here are from two of the three from the time – the albums Tomorrow and Ere Yon. Ere Yon is a very compelling take on more traditional modes of the time – a bit highlife, but often nicely stripped-down, and with these occasional keyboard parts that give a cool spacey sound to the whole thing – a mode that works perfectly with Coker's strong vocal range. The music on Tomorrow is from a few years later, and has a warmer, clubbier vibe – a bit more of the Lagos disco promised in the title, but again handled in a way that's still very unique. Titles include "Iyo Re", "Elelemi", "Ere Yon", "Re Hese", "It's All For You", "Sogio", and "Gossiper Scandal Monger". LP, Vinyl record album
