King Sunny AdeJuju Music ... CD
Mango, 1982. Used ... $2.99
King Sunny Ade's first major label LP, that helped him bring his juju music to the world. The blueprint of juju's laid down hear, with loads of intertwining guitar lines and tallking drums chattering away in a driving but never-too-busy fashion underneath. Includes "Sunny Ti De Arya", "Ja Funmi" and "365 Is My Number/The Message". CD

African Music MachineBlack Water Gold ... LP
Soul Power, 1972/1974. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $11.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". BitoriLegend Of Funana – The Forbidden Music Of The Cape Verde Islands ... CD
Analog Africa (UK), 1997. Used ... $13.99
An album with a very unusual vibe – one that showcases the Cape Verdean style of funana – a fast-moving groove that features accordion in the lead! That instrument is played here by Bitori – who was 57 years old at the time of the recording, but plays with the deft energy of a much younger musician – with lots of quick turns and sharp notes that come down right on the rhythms, while Bitori and the rest of the group trade lyrics back and forth! The tempo is fast on most tracks – and the music almost feels like a more contemporary extension of the forro style in Brazil – no surprise, as both of the musics have a key place in the working class communities of their nations. Some of the rhythms here are more modern, but there's still an overall rootsy vibe to the whole record – and titles include "Cruz Di Pico", "Cabalo", "Munana", "Didi Di Rez", "Julinh", "Natalia", "Rabelado", and "Bitori Nha Bibinha". Afel Bocoum, Damon Albarn, Toumani TiabateMali Music ... LP
Honest Jons (UK), 2002. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $22.99
That Damon Albarn's a busy guy! When he's not busy being a rock star or mock rock star, he's off on holiday in some exotic locale – but making another record at the same time, like this one, recorded in Mali. We have to admit, though we were predisposed towards the bare field recordings – featuring Malians singing and playing guitar and kora – which sound great, the more produced numbers are suprisingly wonderful too, and though the record's all over the map, it still plays like a beautiful journey from start to finish. As you may already know, music from Mali steers it's own course, quite different from most of the other Afrobeat and funky African grooves you'll find elsewhere on our page, with a light springy quality and unhurried openness. 16 tracks in all, including "Le Relax", "Makelekele", "Tennessee Hotel", "Kela Village" and "Sunset Coming On". East New York Ensemble De MusicAt The Helm ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
An extremely righteous bit of soul jazz – originally issued in a very small pressing by Folkway Records, at a time when the label was doing some great underground recordings! The sound is loose and free – spiritually building in a manner that recalls the work of Ahmed Abdul Malik, Phil Cohran, and some of the AACM – and the album has a style that's exploratory, but never goes too far out, or loses its sense of rhythm and swing. Tracks are longish, and the core group features soprano sax and Korean reeds by Bilal Abdurahman and vibes by Ameen Nuraldeen – plus guest work on bass by James Smith, and appearances by a lot of different world percussion players. There's a nice Eastern feel to some of the tracks, and titles include "Mevlana", "Ti Ti", "Sun Flower", and "Bent El Jerusalem". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

Heerlens Percussie EnsembleBiologic Music ... LP
Hot Mule (France), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A really unusual little album – one that partly embraces a globe's worth of acoustic percussion, partly expresses itself in the minimal percussion legacy after Steve Reich's Drumming, and partly embraces some of the electric/acoustic sounds of the New York downtown scene of the early 80s – in work by artists like David Van Tieghem or Peter Gordon! The group use a mix of vibes, balafon, marimbas, and other percussion instruments – then add in occasional beats or other electric elements, but usually in a subtle way – that blend of global and European modes that was also surfacing a bit on the Crammed label at the time. All tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Black Africa", "Back To The Factory", "Kpanlogo", "Biologic Music", and "Adowa". (Out Sound, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Hugh MasekelaHome Is Where The Music Is ... CD
Blue Thumb/Verve, 1972. New Copy ... $10.99 11.98
Massively wonderful work from the mighty Hugh Masekela – easily one of his hippest, most soulful sessions ever! This double-length gem really has Hugh letting go – moving way beyond the pop modes of the late 60s, into a long-flowing, open-rolling groove that's played by a spare quintet lineup with plenty of African themes in the rhythms! Players include Larry Willis on acoustic and electric piano and Dudu Pukwana on alto sax – both of whom are wonderful, and really get a chance to sparkle in the session – almost sharing equal space with Masekela in the sound and shape of the record, although Hugh's horn work is pretty darn amazing too. Other players include Eddie Gomez on bass and Mahaya Ntshoko on drums – and the record has the sort of open, righteous feel of a session on Black Jazz or Strata East – a vibe that really blows away most other Chisa Records work of the time. Titles include Willis' classic "Inner Crisis", plus "Blues For Huey", "Part Of A Whole", "Maesha", "The Big Apple", "Minawa", and "Nomali". CD

Tripped out! Tony Scott plays clarinet with backing on sitar by Colin Walcott – making for a very spare, very spooky album that's a bit more mind-chilling than we'd normally use for meditation! The record has a nicely stripped-down approach that's different than most of the other Verve-groovy sides from the time – more serious, and with a mixture of jazz and Indian music that's a bit less pandering than other affairs of this type from the time. Selda BagcanSelda ... CD
B- Music/Finders Keepers, 1975. Used ... $13.99
Funky breaks and fuzzy guitars – one of the most amazing albums to come out of the Turkish scene of the 70s – and one with a sound that really defies categorization! Although the sweet image of a girl and guitar on the cover might make you think the record's a folk set, the overall production is heavily electric – filled with fuzzed-up touches on the guitars, and usually supported by some funky drumming that gives most of the record a cool Eastern break sort of feel! Lyrics aren't in English, but they're oddly compelling even if you don't know what they mean – as Selda's voice has a weird other-wordly quality, and comes off with the same tripped-out qualities as the music! Titles include "Ince Ince", "Nasirli Eller", "Mehmet Emmi", "Dost Uyan", "Gitme", "Kizil Dere", "Yaz Gazeteci Yaz", and "Meydan Sizindir". CD features 5 bonus tracks – but it's not like you've got the original album, and needed those as an incentive to buy the reissue! (Rock, Global Grooves) CD

Ananda ShankarAnanda Shankar (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Reprise/Music On Vinyl (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 27.98
Insanely fantastic! Ananda Shankar was one of the hippest sitar players of the 60s – an artist who was not only steeped in the strongest traditions of Indian music heard in other more mainstream players, but one who also had a keen ear for modder and funkier grooves of the time! This rare American set by Ananda is one of his greatest ever – a brilliant mix of funky backings and tripped out sitar work – done in a way that blends together soul, funk, and rock – all given a particularly cool Indian twist. The vibe is very much in the best funky Bollywood style – but was actually done years before most Bollywood funk – and the set includes great covers of "Jumpin Jack Flash" and "Light My Fire", plus great original tracks like "Sagar (The Ocean)", "Snow Flower", "Dance Indra", and "Metamorphosis". King Sunny AdeSynchro System/Aura ... CD
Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

A really fantastic little record – and one that's even better than you might expect from the title – which itself is already pretty darn fantastic! Tony AllenFilm Of Life ... CD
Jazz Village (France), 2014. Used ... $14.99
Maybe the best album we've heard from Tony Allen in years – a really compelling set that still holds onto all the elements we love in his music, but which also introduces all these great other bits as well! The sound's never unfocused or confused – and instead, it kind of allows Allen to leap off in even more expressive styles – still grounded in rhythms that run back to his roots – but filled with creative instrumentation from an array of guests, and some spacey, electric touches that recall the fire in Tony's music when he first sprang back on the scene about a decade ago! Allen adds a few pointed lyrics at points – furthering the "life" presented in the title and great cover image – and titles include "Go Back", "Ire Omo", "Ewa", "Afro Kungfu Beat", "Moving On", "Boat Journey", and "African Man". A really fantastic collaboration between two pioneers of African music – and a set that nicely opens both into the jazziest side of their talents! Hugh Masekela blows flugelhorn, and Tony Allen handles drums and plenty of percussion – and although both artists sing a bit, the main focus here is really on the instrumentation – as half the album's tracks are instrumentals, and there's plenty of room for solos over the really great rhythms in the mix! AmabanoAmsterdam Ticket (with bonus download) ... LP
Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". Antibalas take a page from the Wu-Tang book, and add a little kung fu action to their music – with results that maybe make this set one of their freshest in years! All the core energy of the group is very firmly in place – that razor-sharp instrumentation that's made these guys one of the best funky groups on the planet for over 20 years, and which also still makes Antibalas head and shoulders above some of the groups that sprung up in their wake – and this time around, the lyrical themes are nicely expanded, so that the vocals have as much dynamic energy as the horns and Afro Funk percussion – almost with this narrative approach that furthers the message in the music. Arat Kilo blend together sounds of West Africa, currents of hip hop, and older Mid East modes – all filtered through their unique Parisian perspective, and topped here with help from Mike Ladd and Mamani Keita on vocals! The record's a great evolution of older world music blends that never seemed to gel this well – but which maybe took the efforts of a younger multicultural outfit like this to really hold together! Okyerema AsanteSabi ... LP
Atumpan/Kalita (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A lost set from percussionist Okyerema Asante – an African percussionist, but one who made some great music as part of the Black Fire/Oneness Of Juju collective on the DC scene in the 70s! This album follows with a spirit that's a bit like the later work of Oneness – and in fact, the group also features its leader, the excellent Plunky Nakabinde on a variety of saxes and flute. There's a strong dancefloor current at times – mixing funk and soul with deeper roots – similar to Oneness on their Make A Change album, inflected with lots of clubby rhythms and a bit of electronics. The best cut is "That's My Girl" – a 15 minute number that grooves on with some good sax bits from Plunky, and a catchy hook that comes off quite soulfully – but the other long track, "Sabi (Get Down)", is pretty great too. Fred Fisher Atalobhor & His Ogiza Dance BandAfrican Carnival ... CD
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 70s/1980s. Used 2 CDs ... $8.99
Funky African work from Fred Fisher – a Nigerian trombonist who crafted his own unique groove at the end of the 70s! Fred both sings and plays trombone – the latter with a Fred Wesley-like soulfulness – and his rhythms here are really wide-ranging, and embrace a host of new styles coming into play at the time – including a fair bit of influences from American soul! Some cuts have a rootsy groove, while others move into tighter dancefloor territory – never in a commercial style at all, but with traces of boogie and other 80s modes in the mix. Vocals are sometimes in English, which furthers the global appeal of the music – and the set brings together tracks from 4 different albums by Fisher. Titles include "Say The Truth", "Asa Sa", "Iye Ye Mu Elediamemisise", "No Way", "Let Love Free", "WTFS", "Beautiful Dancer", "Happy Blue Night", "The Beginning Ishan", "Ehimedede", "Babajoo", and "Ebi Lolo". 2CD set features 20 tracks in all. Note: The music on the whole set is great, but there are a few tracks that suffer sound-wise from some distortion in the masters used. Most of the other tracks are fine, though. CD

An album of heavy righteous power from Alhaji Kollington Ayinla and his Fuji 78 ensemble – a group who bring a very different sound to this record than some of the more mainstream Afro Funk work of the Nigerian scene at the time! The group are heavily percussive, and also use their drums in these inflected ways that open up next to the vocals – yet they're also not afraid to throw in a bit of synth and keyboards, but with modes that are never trying to overwhelm the core fuji energy of the music – which really comes from the hard-driving percussion, and the rising of group vocals next to the lead of Ayinla – all in ways that almost have the righteous energy of prayer, but tuned here towards much more secular politics in the end. The whole record has a timeless power that's undeniable – and titles include "Pataki L'Omo", "To Ba Jisoro Mi", "Won Ti Gbe Oye Fun Mi", "Adio Shile", "E Ye Ika Se", and "Odu Titun De". Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 26.98
Excellent sounds from Ojo Balingo – a Nigerian juju artist from the same stretch as King Sunny Ade – but one whose music is much more obscure to audiences on this side of the Atlantic! Balingo's group here has the loose, spontaneous vibe that characterizes juju at its best – this real sense of jamming, especially in the criss-crossing of the percussion, which is tremendous throughout – a real driving force of the music, and exploding with all these melodic elements as much as rhythmic ones – so much so, that the talking between the drums speaks volumes, even before the vocals come into the mix. The whole thing's a masterpiece of creative percussion, mixed with other elements that creep in a bit more strongly on side two – and titles include "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo", "Ayo Igbala Ni Mofe, "Igbe Eiye Oloburo", "Jide Babaloa & Bayo Babalola", and "Ile Aiye Ile Ese Ile Aiye Ogun". ✨✧ Baroque Jazz TrioBaroque Jazz Trio ... LP
Saravah/Souffle Continu (France), 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99
Beautiful stuff – and one of the most stunning jazz albums ever recorded – a blinding mix of harpsichord, cello, and Indian percussion – with a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The album was the brainchild of the cross-culturally fertile Saravah records at the end of the 60s – home to experimental work by Brigitte Fontaine, Barney Wilen, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and others. From the start, the group wanted to work in a boundary-less territory that really pushed the limits of jazz – drawing in inspiration from world music, and working in a style they called "baroque", to emphasize the bizarreness of their project. Given the heavy use of tabla on the set, the album's got a really driving rhythmic component – making for some funky numbers that have been sought-after jazz-dance tracks for years. And the role of the harpsichord is surprisingly strong – played in almost modal lines, but with a hesitating, lilting groove that's quite different to similar use of the piano at the time. Titles include "Delhi Daily", "Chandigardh", "Latin Baroque", "Zoma", and "Cesar Go Back Home". (Jazz, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Batidos (Jay Rodriguez & Ron Trent)Olajope ... CD
Six Degrees, 2001. Used ... $6.99
One of the coolest projects to bear the imprint of New York DJ Ron Trent – a shimmering blend of house music, jazzy fusion, and Latin influences! The core group features Trent on percussion and keyboards – with additional keyboards, vocals, and woodwinds from Jay Rodriguez – and the album sports a host of great guest players, including Chucho Valdes, who plays Fender Rhodes on a few tracks! There's a strident approach to the album's tracks – almost taking off of seminal 70s Latin fusion projects, like the work of Bobby Vince Paunetto, and giving the grooves a more current New York twist. The set's great overall – and titles include "Just A Dream", "Agua", "Dear Neven", "Cumbe", "Oya", "Olajope", "Buscame", and "Myths & Realities". (New Grooves, Global Grooves) CD

BelenouEmosyon Tambou-a ... LP
Beau Monde (France), 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A record from the start of the 90s, but one with a spirit that's much more like some of the best 70s hybrids of jazz and global rhythms – served up here by a group that features plenty of the three musical elements pictured on the cover, plus some vocals from the ensemble as well! Electric bass and guitar are the two non-acoustic instruments in the mix – and there's plenty of rootsy percussion that really moves quickly with the grooves, as the bass often inflects along with the energy of the rhythms – laying out a tuneful path that's then followed by the vocals! And there's more guitar solos than tenor moments, but they definitely get the right sort of space to stretch out – on titles that include "Danse Ting Bang", "Wi Nou Ke Rive", "Demokrasi", "Emosyon Tanbou-A", "Sove Te A", and "Tout Pep La Sanble". Rupa BiswasDisco Jazz ... CD
Numero, 1982. New Copy ... $9.99 16.98
A record that's got to be one of the coolest recorded in Calgary during the early 80s – as it offers up a really unusual blend of modes that definitely lives up to its title, and which also borrows a bit from Indian music as well! Singer Rupa Biswas fronts a group that's equally strong on the instrumental tip, and which allow for plenty of room in the tracks to let the players stretch out and solo – in a blend of keyboards and guitar with more traditional sarod and tablas! Rhythms are mostly upbeat, but in ways that are more interesting than the "disco" title implies – especially in 1982 – and the whole thing's maybe first a funky fusion record, which then borrows a bit from Indian percussion, then adds in Rupa's vocals in the lead. Titles include "Aaj Shanibar", "Moja Bhari Moja", "East West Shuffle", and the side-long jam "Ayee Morshume/Be Reham Duniya". CD

Franck Biyong with Cristina ViolleTrouble – Anywhere Trouble (club mix, radio edit, inst)/Trouble (beats) ... 12-inch
Hot Casa (France), 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $14.99
A great little funky single from Franck Biyong – part of his continuing evolution and growth as one of the leading lights in the contemporary Afro Funk underground – an artist who's really moved past some of the slavish styles of years behind! Franck adds in both live drums and rhythm programs here – chanting out the vocals with Cristina Violle alongside him in the lead – while keyboardist Florian Pellissier and a jazzy combo keep things moving in the back! All three vocal mixes of the tune are great, but the club mix may well be the best – although the whole four track single works together almost as a mini suite based on the music! BloPhase IV (with bonus download) ... LP
PMG (Austria), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
Blo have gone through a few different phases before this fantastic fourth album – but none of them as funky as the work on this set – which may well set a whole new standard for the Nigerian music legends! The groove here is super-tight, with lots of excellent bass and drums snapping at the bottom – and some of the darkness of their earlier work is replaced by a upbeat style that really lifts the music up – although never in ways that are trying to put a fake smile on things for commercial purposes! Instead, these guys just seem to have a great sense of their own energy – and maybe an even stronger influence from American funk than before, turned towards a grittier Nigerian groove, with some deeply soulful production. Titles include "Scandi Boogie", "Trace Of Suicide", "Music Makes You Happy", "Save Me", "You're So Kind", "Move Up", and "I Miss Your Lovin". LP, Vinyl record album

Jagger BotchwayOdze Odze (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Sweet African funk from Jagger Botchway – a musician with roots in The Barons, Hedzoleh Soundz, and Kelenkye Band – stepping out here on his own in a heady brew of percussion, guitar lines, and horns! Some of the cuts are vocal, some are instrumental – and the mix of melody and rhythm is very unique – almost with Caribbean elements filtered into the more Ghanian styles you'd expect from Jagger – with a brightness in the grooves that fits well with the horn parts in the mix! And this special package doubles the content of the original record – by offering up all the album tracks, then adding in a full album of remixes too – which further emphasize the grit in the grooves. Titles include "Odze Odze", "Take Time", "Obleku", "Chapter 5", "Kake Odzole Oye", "Moko Le Dzen", "Odze Oldze (Africaine 808 rmx)", "Moko Le Dzen (Ruf Dug disco dub)", "Take Time (GRC rmx)", "Odze Odze (Alma Negra rmx)", and "Moko Le Dzen (GRC rmx)". BuariDisco Soccer ... CD
Makossa/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A killer blend of African roots and American rhythms – and a set that definitely lives up to the disco promised in the title! Buari's working here with a host of New York musicians – jazzy players who include Randy Brecker and Jon Faddis on trumpet, Barry Rogers on trombone, and Michael Brecker on tenor – all blowing tightly over the album's quick rhythms and well-crafted string arrangements! The sound is hardly familiar disco – and the music is much more in the styles of the underground at the time – almost equivalent to P&P Records productions in the way that Buari works some clever magic with the grooves. The whole thing's got a lot more edge than his better-known set on RCA – and titles include "Koko Si", "I'm Ready", "Feed My Body", "Hard Times", "Adesa A", "Minyo", "Born With Music", and "African Hustle". ✨✧ Sidiku BuariRevolution – Live Disco Show In New York City ... CD
BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
One of the coolest records ever issued by Sidiku Buari – the Ghanian musician who also recorded just as Buari – stepping out here in a very unusual performance recorded live at a club in New York at the end of the 70s! Side one begins with this great crowd frenzy and very cool energy as Buari's group take off running – mixing West African modes with more American boogie and funk elements – in a blend that has lots of riffing guitar and some especially groovy keyboard parts! Side two features studio material, but still pretty darn great – and maybe touched with a slight inspiration from Jamaica in some of the dubbier rhythms. There's some nicely weird sounds that are a bit hard to identify, and which cut against some of the sweeter vocal moments – on titles that include "Together We Can Rebuild It", "Revolution", "Keep The Rhythm Going", "Ofey Karambani", "This Is Music", and "Disco Soccer". A classic soundtrack from Indian film composer Rahul Dev Burman – and one that reminds us just how important the voice was to the format over the years! Unlike some Bollywood soundtracks, which have long upbeat songs that are driving the dance numbers in the film – this score has a fair bit of mellower tracks, which really seem to bring out the best of the famous singers in the music – a lineup that includes Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, and Kishore Kumar. Titles include "Dil Sajan Jalta Hai", "Pvar Hai Ik Nishan Qadmon Ka (part 1)", "Dance Music", "Lalla Lalla Lori Doodh Ki Katori", and "Suhani Chandni Raten". CD

A great release by this really unique combo – a Brazilian group, but one who are equally interested in the African roots in their music – but in ways that are completely different than any other contemporary act we can think of! Camarao Orkestra aren't one of those Fela-styled Afro Funk combos that have popped up on nearly every scene around the globe in recent years – and instead, the music here is this really beautiful blend of Brazilian percussion, warmer production styles, and some deeper modes borrowed from the other side of the Atlantic – all fused together with instrumentation that's live, spontaneous, and never overproduced – in ways that really take us back to some of the best Brazilian musical experiments of years past! As part of that, the group take on one of the key tunes from the Afro Sambas project of Baden Powell and Vinicius De Moraes – "Canto De Imenja" – and move into their own tunes on other tracks that include "Canto Da Bahia", "Dia De Verao", "Nacao Africa", "Copacabana", and "Guerreiro Yoruba". Don CherryOm Shanti Om ... CD
Black Sweat (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
Rare 70s work from Don Cherry, and one of the most perfect realizations of his organic music concept – a quartet session recorded for Italian broadcast, with long songs that have a very spun-out, meditative vibe! Cherry's on pocket trumpet, but is way more than a horn player – as his vocalizations and spirit really guide the whole proceedings – played by a quartet that features Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, Gian Piero Pramaggiore on guitar, and Moki on tanpura! As you can imagine from the mix of instruments, there's an earthy, organic vibe to the whole set – really special sounds that come together with a natural beauty that may well make the record one of Don's most spiritual performances of the 70s – and that's really saying a lot. Titles include "Koye", "Flute Song", "Dissolution", "Nana's Solo", "Om Shanti Om", Luna Turca", and "Chenrezig". (Jazz, Global Grooves) CD

Don Cherry/Nana Vasconcelos/Collin WalcottCodona 3 ... LP
ECM, 1980. Near Mint- ... $29.99
The third meeting of this world jazz ensemble, with Colin Walcott of Oregon on sitar, tabla and hammered dulcimer, Don Cherry on trumpet, organ and doussn'gouni and Nana Vasconcelos on berimbau and percussion. All three players have always had a very wide reaching approach to playing, even incorporating international elements in their less overtly "world music" projects, and this set finds them once again vibing well off each other. The tunes feature a wide open approach with improvised excursions on traditional and contemporary themes, with 7 tracks in all: "Goshakabuchi", "Hey Da Ba Doom", "Travel By Night", "Lullaby", "Trayra Boia", "Clicky Clacky" and "Inner Organs".
