African Music MachineBlack Water Gold (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Soul Power/P-Vine (Japan), 1972/1974. New Copy ... $22.99
Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! The band has a very unique sound that involves a lot of rolling bubbling basslines, spacey organ grooves, tight choppy guitar riffs, and punchy horn blasts – almost with the African elements promised in the title, but served up with a deeper funk sound all the way through! In a way, the group's a bit like Cymande or some of the other 70s hybrid ensembles – yet they've got a lot less dub, a much more direct funky groove, and plety of raw southern elements in the mix as well! This is the funky 45 material we first cut our teeth on back in the day – and the original singles are legendary! Includes massive cuts like "Black Water Gold (Pearl)", "A Girl In France", "Never Name A Baby (Before It's Born), "Making Nassau Fruit Drink", "Camel Time", "The Dapp", "Tropical", and "Mr. Brown". Afel Bocoum, Damon Albarn, Toumani TiabateMali Music ... CD
Honest Jons/Astralwerks, 2002. Used ... $6.99
That Damon Albarn's a busy guy! When he's not busy being a rock star or mock rock star, he's off on holiday in some exotic locale – but making another record at the same time, like this one, recorded in Mali. We have to admit, though we were predisposed towards the bare field recordings – featuring Malians singing and playing guitar and kora – which sound great, the more produced numbers are suprisingly wonderful too, and though the CD's all over the map, it still plays like a beautiful journey from start to finish. As you may already know, music from Mali steers it's own course, quite different from most of the other Afrobeat and funky African grooves you'll find elsewhere on our page, with a light springy quality and unhurried openness. 16 tracks in all, including "Le relax", "Makelekele", "Tennessee Hotel", "Kela Village" and "Sunset Coming On". ✨✧ Fela & Roy AyersMusic Of Many Colors ... LP
Celluloid/Knitting Factory, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the best soul collaborations ever! Fela and Roy Ayers team up for this whopping album that brings together the best sides of these monster soul talents of the 70s! In keeping with Fela's work, the tracks are long and Afro-tinged, with a complicated groove that grows over the length of the track. And in keeping with Roy's work, the album has a sweet soulful feel, with lots of nice jazzy touches, cool vibes, and great vocals by Roy. Two long tracks, both classics: "2000 Black" and "Africa, Center of the World". Long overdue! LP, Vinyl record album

Group DouehGuitar Music From The Western Sahara ... CD
Sublime Frequencies, 2006. Used ... $9.99
One of the wildest albums on the Sublime Frequencies label – really amazing music by a West Saharan group – one that features some of the most incredible guitar you'll ever hear! The music is all of recent vintage, recorded especially for this CD project – and the tunes have some incredibly offbeat electric guitar – riffing one minute, rambling the next, often with an intensity that matches the fast-sung vocals on the tracks. Other instrumentation includes a bit of keyboards and percussion – and the tunes are extremely hypnotic – almost a rockish distillation of same musical essence of the Master Musicians Of Joujouka. Titles include "Eid For Dahkla", "Wazan Samat", "Sabah Lala", "Fagu", "Tirara", and "Eid El Sarsh". CD

Heerlens Percussie EnsembleBiologic Music ... LP
Hot Mule (France), 1986. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A really unusual little album – one that partly embraces a globe's worth of acoustic percussion, partly expresses itself in the minimal percussion legacy after Steve Reich's Drumming, and partly embraces some of the electric/acoustic sounds of the New York downtown scene of the early 80s – in work by artists like David Van Tieghem or Peter Gordon! The group use a mix of vibes, balafon, marimbas, and other percussion instruments – then add in occasional beats or other electric elements, but usually in a subtle way – that blend of global and European modes that was also surfacing a bit on the Crammed label at the time. All tracks are instrumental – and titles include "Black Africa", "Back To The Factory", "Kpanlogo", "Biologic Music", and "Adowa". (Out Sound, Global Grooves) LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, 1968. Used ... $6.99
Tripped out! Tony Scott plays clarinet with backing on sitar by Colin Walcott – making for a very spare, very spooky album that's a bit more mind-chilling than we'd normally use for meditation! The record has a nicely stripped-down approach that's different than most of the other Verve-groovy sides from the time – more serious, and with a mixture of jazz and Indian music that's a bit less pandering than other affairs of this type from the time. Titles include "Prahna", "Shiva", "Shanti", "Triveni", and "Kundalina". (Now Sound, Global Grooves) CD

Soutelphan/We Want Sounds (UK), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
That's a pretty groovy looking keyboard on the cover – and the record's got a pretty groovy sound as well – very different than other organ records or Mid-East instrumental titles of the time, thanks in part to some very dexterous work on the multi-level keys from Omar El Shariyi! The tunes are all Egyptian melodies by Mohamed Abdel Wahab, but given a very groovy electric spin – in modes that sometimes almost veer towards the moogy, mixed with acoustic percussion, violin lines, and some other nice touches – all of which really keep things interesting in balance with the keyboards. Omar's actually the better-known Ammar El Sherei, working under a pseudonym – and titles include "Ana Wehabieby", "Ahwak", "Gafnoho", "Yawabor Kolly", and "Ah Mennak". LP, Vinyl record album

Vijana Jazz BandKoka Koka Sex Battalion – Rumba, Koka Koka, & Kamata Sukuma – Music from Tanzania 1975 to 1980 ... CD
Sterns (UK), Late 70s. Used ... $9.99
Not jazz in any American sense of the music – but some wonderful Tanzanian grooves from the late 70s, often inflected with some really freewheeling work on guitar! The music here is heavy on percussion at the bottom, but has a really sprightly feel overall – perfect for the dancefloor, where this group was quite popular on the East African scene – but with a complexity that also makes the whole thing pretty compelling for a more cerebral listen as well! Interweaving melodic lines really hold things together wonderfully – as the vocals cascade over guitars, all sewn together with these basslines that seem to step along at a slower pace than everything else. The set brings together some of the group's hits, some more obscure recordings, and features full notes in English. Titles include "Lela", "Gwe Manetu Fii", "Heka Heka", "Koka Koka #1", "Magdalena", "Gubu La Mume", "Pili Nihurumie", "Salima Utakujajuta", and "Utatugombanisha". CD

Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2018. Used ... $6.99
A beautiful celebration of the first ten years of Heavenly Sweetness – a fantastic French record label that's not only given us spiritual jazz from giants of the 70s, but also opened our ears to both new sounds from contemporary artists, and a wide array of rhythms from around the globe! All those elements are perfectly balanced here – showing Heavenly Sweetness as an imprint that can live up to the legacy of earlier European giants – with a similar culture-crossing vibe as MPS or Saravah, but a much more contemporary approach too! VariousLiving Is Hard – West African Music In Britain 1927 to 1929 ... CD
Honest Jons (UK), Late 20s. Used ... $8.99
A fascinating collection of West African music recorded in England during the late 20s – material done for the Zonophone label as part of a big wave of colonial immigration to London at the time! The package is one of the deepest-digging we've seen so far on the Honest Jon's label – and the music, although quite old, is really incredible – done in a range of African styles and languages, and presented with surprising clarity, given the age of the originals. There's a feel here that's almost like ethnographic recordings done in the homelands many years later – and the package is supported by some wonderful notes that paint a vivid picture of the lives and struggles of African immigrants in the UK during the period. Titles include "Garse Yer Fido" by Oni Johnson, "Nitsi Koko Ko Ko" by Isaac Jackson, "Bukay" by John Mugat, "Asin Asin (part 2)" by Kumasi Trio, "Rue Bai Rue Bai" by James Tucker, "Obu Kofi" by Ben Simmons, "Abowe Dsane Nmaka Tso" by The Ga Quartet, and "Wasiu Dowu" by Nicholas De Heer. A wealth of recent recordings from the SWP label – an ethnographic powerhouse who are really furthering the sorts of material initially captured by earlier labels like Folkways or Ocora! The style here is very much like the latter – very faithful to the presentation, and very well-recorded – and there's also a clear social mission to really push deeper and farther – in this case well into the eastern side of Zambia's Luangwa province, which includes some musical styles and cultures that have never been recorded before! The set is huge – 4CDs with a tremendous amount of music – presented in a very cool book-styled cover, with copious notes – and separately themed CDs, with titles that include Southern Province Mix, Leya Ceremony & Songs, The Complete Kalonda Band Recordings, and Chikunda Nsenga Soli Cewa. Play Loud (UK), Late 20s/1930s/1940s/1950s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really revelatory collection – a set of vintage recordings from the Jewish community in London's East End – songs with sounds that resonate very strongly with the musical sound of New York's Lower East Side during the same stretch of time! There's definitely some of the jazz promised in the title, and plenty of klezmer-styled instrumentation – but many tracks are vocal, and a fair bit also move into Yiddish comedy modes, which is A-OK with us – kind of a London variation on modes you might know from Mickey Katz and some of his contemporaries, especially on the postwar tracks, which dominate the set. The package has a great set of notes, and titles include "Beigels" by Max Bacon, "Tzena Tzena Tzena" by Johnny Franks & His Kosher Ragtimers, "A Letter To My Mother" by Lew Stone & The Monseigneur Band, "Selection Of Hebrew Dances No 1" by Ambrose & His Orchestra, "Festival Of Britain" and "Whitechapel" by Chaim Towber with Johnny Franks Orchestra, and "Petticoat Lane" by The Plaza Band – plus "Jews Temporary Shelter 75th Anniversary Appeal", from a rare 1960 flexidisc! ✨✧ Donald KachambaSimanje-Manje & Kwela From Malawi ... CD
Popular African Music (Germany), 1978. Used ... $19.99
Who knew? A killer one-man band from Malawi, a small sliver of a country in Southeastern Africa. Donald Kachamba is a master of the pennywhistle, the cheap recorder-like instrument that was the dominant instrument in the early days of South African kwela music, a delirious style inspired by American swing music. Long after the genre's popularity faded in South Africa, it was still thriving in Malawi. Donald was instructed by his well-known brother Daniel, and spent years playing in his band. But this recording focuses on Donald's playback compositions – primitive yet dynamic multi-tracked recordings where he plays everything, frequently creating harmonic depth by using multiple tunings! The jaunty dance rhythms are sketched out using various hand percussion, acoustic guitar, and a one-string bass, while buoyant contrapuntal melodies are delivered on harmonica, b-flat clarinet, and deftly harmonized pennywhistle lines. There are a couple of tracks made with Kachamba's live band, but we actually prefer the quirky studio creations. Tracks include "Nasibeko Lumba", "Mapasa Jive", "Kanyodole Simanje", "Tsoka Laine", and "Inu Amunanga". CD

Idris Ackamoor & The PyramidsWe Be All Africans ... CD
Strut (UK), 2016. Used ... $6.99
Legendary reedman Idris Ackamoor is strongly back in action – working here with a new version of his classic Pyramids group from the 70s – with a groove that's every bit as righteous as their classic albums from back in the day! In truth, Ackamoor has been going strongly over the previous few decades – working on the west coast underground in a mode that's every bit as spiritual and righteous as his more famous material – which means that this new set is hardly some rescue from obscurity, and more just a focus of the spotlight on all the great sounds that Idris has been giving us on his self-released CDs! Yet this new album is definitely something extra-special, too – as Strut have given Ackamoore a real chance to open up with a group that also features the great Babatunde Lea on percussion, as well as two female singers who really help deliver the message in the music. Iris himself plays alto and tenor – and titles include "Rhapsody In Berlin", "Whispering Tenderness", "Clarion Call", "Traponga", "We Be All Africans", "Epiphany", and "Silent Days". Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

Really fantastic music, with a sound that's as hip as the image on the cover – not jazz as we know it here in the US, but a wonderful hybrid of our own musical roots with elements of Sudanese music – all delivered with a very postmodern mish-mash of styles, and a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The blend is a bit like some of the hybrids that were occurring in Ethiopian music at the time – and is maybe as unique as some of those classic recordings – with vocals that have a stretched-out style with lots of inflections, set up next to jagged rhythms that often have as much guitar in the groove as percussion, topped with offbeat reed passages that use lots of very cool tuning! Maybe the best release so far from this wonderful label – with titles that include "El Bambi", "Ya Shagini", "Aziza", "Malak Ya Saly", "Argos Farfish", and "Kamar Dawa". LP, Vinyl record album

Ihsan Al-MunzerBelly Dance Disco – Ernest Chahoud Presents Middle Eastern Heavens ... CD
A Chahine & Fils/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A really fantastic little record – and one that's even better than you might expect from the title – which itself is already pretty darn fantastic! The set is upbeat and funky, but not entirely disco – more this very groovy blend of Mid-East elements and more familiar keyboards – all moving and grooving in ways that are a lot hipper than any other belly dance music we've heard! Music features piano and organ, plus a very cool "string synthesizer" by played by the leader – and there's also plenty of percussion at the core of the set, making for a nice juxtaposition with the electric elements. Titles include "Night Entertainer", "Dance Of Tenderness", "Joy Of Lina", "A Flower Of My Imagination", "Love Of Laura", "Girls Of Iskandariah", and "Once A Year". CD

Tony Allen & Hugh MasekelaRejoice ... CD
World Circuit, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.98
A really fantastic collaboration between two pioneers of African music – and a set that nicely opens both into the jazziest side of their talents! Hugh Masekela blows flugelhorn, and Tony Allen handles drums and plenty of percussion – and although both artists sing a bit, the main focus here is really on the instrumentation – as half the album's tracks are instrumentals, and there's plenty of room for solos over the really great rhythms in the mix! The lineup of players is great, too – tight, but with some nice surprises – including tenor from Steve Williamson, vibes from Lewis Wright, and keyboards from Joe Armon Jones – on titles that include "Robbers Thugs & Muggers", "Agbada Bougou", "Obama Shuffle Street Blues", "We've Landed", "Slow Bones", and "Never". AmabanoAmsterdam Ticket (with bonus download) ... LP
Afro 7 (Finland), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
Fantastic grooves from Amabano – an obscure group from Burundi, on a record that was initially only issued in the Soviet Union! That strange lack of exposure is no reflection on the music at all, though – as these guys are wickedly funky, and play with the sharpness and rawness of some of the best West African funk combos from the mid 70s, and not the smoother, more well-produced elements of the world music scene of the late 80s! Percussion is quite strong on most numbers, as are the ringing tones of the guitar – and while a few tracks have female vocals in the lead, others have an especially strong instrumental groove. Our two favorites are "Ilunga Diamond's Touch" and "Amsterdam Ticket" – both of which we'd put up next to better known Nigerian funk classics – and other tracks include "Munzanire", "Ewe Burundi", and "Nter'amajane". Idowu AnimashaunApola Tunde ... CD
African Songs (UK), Mid 70s. Used ... $6.99
A series of extended song medleys from Nigerian musician Idowu Animashaun – tracks that mix together wispy guitar, light percussion, and vocals that playfully deal with a variety of themes! The style here isn't nearly as heavy-hitting as that of Idowu's 70s contemporaries – especially those on the Afro Funk scene – but that's also an appealing aspect of the work. The set features 12 titles in all, presented in 3 different medley performances – with tracks that include "Apola Tuned", "B'Eo Mokun", "Spnc", "Ori Bami Se Temi", "Igba Mba Jo", "Chief Adeleke Oshijinrin", "Ale Mi Karora", and "Odidere Loga Ede". Arat Kilo with Mamani Keita & Mike LaddVisions Of Selam (with bonus download) ... LP
Accords Croises (France), 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
Arat Kilo blend together sounds of West Africa, currents of hip hop, and older Mid East modes – all filtered through their unique Parisian perspective, and topped here with help from Mike Ladd and Mamani Keita on vocals! The record's a great evolution of older world music blends that never seemed to gel this well – but which maybe took the efforts of a younger multicultural outfit like this to really hold together! Rhythms are heavy on real percussion, and titles include "Seeds", "Toulo", "Dou Coula", "American Juju", "Soul Flood", "Chaos Embedded", "Yala", "Cilaos", and "Angafile". 2LP set seems to have bonus material from the CD – titles that include "Seeds (inst)", "Dia Barani Tropikal (Kamo rmx)", and "Eshi Swost". BablaBabla's Disco Sensation ... CD
Subah Zindagi (UK), Early 80s. New Copy ... $10.99 16.99
A definite disco sensation from Babla – a singer who refits older Indian film songs with new club grooves for the 80s – definitely very much in the mode that's promised by the title! The set features older songs by Shankhar Jakishan, Kalyanji Anadji, and Hemant Kumar – plus a few originals by Babla too – and the instrumentation also has a fair bit of keyboards in the mix, which creates this spacey disco vibe that's not unlike some of the more cosmic club tracks coming from the European scene at the start of the 80s! Rhythms are all upbeat, and the keyboards give the music a darker edge than you might expect – on titles that include "Aye mere Dil Kahin Aur Chal", "Intian Aartis", "Hamko Tumpe Pyar Aaya", "Kabhi Hota Nahin", and "Man Dole Mera Tan Dole". Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. Used ... $4.99
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". CD

Batidos (Jay Rodriguez & Ron Trent)Olajope ... CD
Six Degrees, 2001. Used ... $4.99
One of the coolest projects to bear the imprint of New York DJ Ron Trent – a shimmering blend of house music, jazzy fusion, and Latin influences! The core group features Trent on percussion and keyboards – with additional keyboards, vocals, and woodwinds from Jay Rodriguez – and the album sports a host of great guest players, including Chucho Valdes, who plays Fender Rhodes on a few tracks! There's a strident approach to the album's tracks – almost taking off of seminal 70s Latin fusion projects, like the work of Bobby Vince Paunetto, and giving the grooves a more current New York twist. The set's great overall – and titles include "Just A Dream", "Agua", "Dear Neven", "Cumbe", "Oya", "Olajope", "Buscame", and "Myths & Realities". (New Grooves, Global Grooves) CD

BelenouEmosyon Tambou-a ... LP
Beau Monde (France), 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
A record from the start of the 90s, but one with a spirit that's much more like some of the best 70s hybrids of jazz and global rhythms – served up here by a group that features plenty of the three musical elements pictured on the cover, plus some vocals from the ensemble as well! Electric bass and guitar are the two non-acoustic instruments in the mix – and there's plenty of rootsy percussion that really moves quickly with the grooves, as the bass often inflects along with the energy of the rhythms – laying out a tuneful path that's then followed by the vocals! And there's more guitar solos than tenor moments, but they definitely get the right sort of space to stretch out – on titles that include "Danse Ting Bang", "Wi Nou Ke Rive", "Demokrasi", "Emosyon Tanbou-A", "Sove Te A", and "Tout Pep La Sanble". BelizMemoires ... LP
Beau Monde (France), 2009. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99
A really cool take on traditions of Guadeloupean musical traditions – served up in a style that echoes some of the blends of jazz and island elements from earlier generations! The group here is a trio – with the great Edmondy Krater on ka, djembe, and percussion – all instruments that are often used in ways that are as melodic as they are rhythmic – and blended with more percussion from Olivier Maurieres and harp from Anne Bacqueyrisse, the last of which is clearly a different variation on the instrument than the more familiar European mode – used to accent some great elements in the percussion with great colors and tones alongside the grooves. There's vocals on a number of tracks, but the percussion/harp interplay is key – and titles include "Natibel", "Mazunga", "Gwadeloup", "Armelance", "Metamorphoses", and "Arawak E Karayib". Jo BissoAfrican Disco Experimentals 1974 to 1978 ... LP
Africa Seven (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99
Don't think "experimental", think funky club tracks – as Jo Bisso did a great job of crossing over to the American mainstream in the 70s, thanks in part to a famous album on TK Records! That work is referenced here, alongside some much more obscure tracks – all with an approach to club music that mixes African touches with some of the more unusual styles of the New York scene – including a few keyboard-heavy moments that would have been right at home on the P&P family of labels! The set's the first to really do justice to the creative talents of Bisso for the clubs – and titles include the long "Play Me" suite, plus "Your Love", "Let's Keep it Together", "Midnight", "Disco Madonna", "Lover's Concerto", "Don't Fight The Feeling", "Love Beat", "Tonight", "Chocodate", "The Mystery With Me", and "Don't Think About It". Jagger BotchwayOdze Odze (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cultures Of Soul, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
Sweet African funk from Jagger Botchway – a musician with roots in The Barons, Hedzoleh Soundz, and Kelenkye Band – stepping out here on his own in a heady brew of percussion, guitar lines, and horns! Some of the cuts are vocal, some are instrumental – and the mix of melody and rhythm is very unique – almost with Caribbean elements filtered into the more Ghanian styles you'd expect from Jagger – with a brightness in the grooves that fits well with the horn parts in the mix! And this special package doubles the content of the original record – by offering up all the album tracks, then adding in a full album of remixes too – which further emphasize the grit in the grooves. Titles include "Odze Odze", "Take Time", "Obleku", "Chapter 5", "Kake Odzole Oye", "Moko Le Dzen", "Odze Oldze (Africaine 808 rmx)", "Moko Le Dzen (Ruf Dug disco dub)", "Take Time (GRC rmx)", "Odze Odze (Alma Negra rmx)", and "Moko Le Dzen (GRC rmx)". Sidiku BuariRevolution – Live Disco Show In New York City ... CD
BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
One of the coolest records ever issued by Sidiku Buari – the Ghanian musician who also recorded just as Buari – stepping out here in a very unusual performance recorded live at a club in New York at the end of the 70s! Side one begins with this great crowd frenzy and very cool energy as Buari's group take off running – mixing West African modes with more American boogie and funk elements – in a blend that has lots of riffing guitar and some especially groovy keyboard parts! Side two features studio material, but still pretty darn great – and maybe touched with a slight inspiration from Jamaica in some of the dubbier rhythms. There's some nicely weird sounds that are a bit hard to identify, and which cut against some of the sweeter vocal moments – on titles that include "Together We Can Rebuild It", "Revolution", "Keep The Rhythm Going", "Ofey Karambani", "This Is Music", and "Disco Soccer". A classic soundtrack from Indian film composer Rahul Dev Burman – and one that reminds us just how important the voice was to the format over the years! Unlike some Bollywood soundtracks, which have long upbeat songs that are driving the dance numbers in the film – this score has a fair bit of mellower tracks, which really seem to bring out the best of the famous singers in the music – a lineup that includes Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammad Rafi, and Kishore Kumar. Titles include "Dil Sajan Jalta Hai", "Pvar Hai Ik Nishan Qadmon Ka (part 1)", "Dance Music", "Lalla Lalla Lori Doodh Ki Katori", and "Suhani Chandni Raten". CD

A great release by this really unique combo – a Brazilian group, but one who are equally interested in the African roots in their music – but in ways that are completely different than any other contemporary act we can think of! Camarao Orkestra aren't one of those Fela-styled Afro Funk combos that have popped up on nearly every scene around the globe in recent years – and instead, the music here is this really beautiful blend of Brazilian percussion, warmer production styles, and some deeper modes borrowed from the other side of the Atlantic – all fused together with instrumentation that's live, spontaneous, and never overproduced – in ways that really take us back to some of the best Brazilian musical experiments of years past! As part of that, the group take on one of the key tunes from the Afro Sambas project of Baden Powell and Vinicius De Moraes – "Canto De Imenja" – and move into their own tunes on other tracks that include "Canto Da Bahia", "Dia De Verao", "Nacao Africa", "Copacabana", and "Guerreiro Yoruba". Don CherryOm Shanti Om ... CD
Black Sweat (Italy), 1976. New Copy ... $24.99
Rare 70s work from Don Cherry, and one of the most perfect realizations of his organic music concept – a quartet session recorded for Italian broadcast, with long songs that have a very spun-out, meditative vibe! Cherry's on pocket trumpet, but is way more than a horn player – as his vocalizations and spirit really guide the whole proceedings – played by a quartet that features Nana Vasconcelos on percussion, Gian Piero Pramaggiore on guitar, and Moki on tanpura! As you can imagine from the mix of instruments, there's an earthy, organic vibe to the whole set – really special sounds that come together with a natural beauty that may well make the record one of Don's most spiritual performances of the 70s – and that's really saying a lot. Titles include "Koye", "Flute Song", "Dissolution", "Nana's Solo", "Om Shanti Om", Luna Turca", and "Chenrezig". (Jazz, Global Grooves) CD

✨✧ Don Cherry/Carlos Ward/Dollar BrandUniversal Silence ... CD
Lepo Glasbo (Germany), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A beautiful live performance from the same trio that delivered the Third World Underground album for Trio Records in 1972 – a set done with a similar mix of earthy, global elements as that gem – delivered by Carlos Ward on alto and flute, Dollar Brand on piano and flute, and Don Cherry on flute, trumpet, and percussion! There's a style here that's almost an extension of the energy of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – especially in the way the musicians mix up instruments – combined with some of the more globally-sensitive elements of Don Cherry's work in Sweden, which clearly brings out qualities in Brand and Ward that are different than their already-great work together on other albums. Titles include "African Session", "Air", "Berimbau", "Waya Wa Egoli", "Cherry", and "Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro". (Jazz, Global Grooves) CD
